Binding A SqlDataSource To A TextBox Or Label

Feb 28, 2007

I have a SQL database with 1 column in it.. it is a do not call registry for my office.  I want to make a web application so our leads can go on the web and request to be put on the do not call list.  problem is, if their number already exists, it gets a violation of primary key... Normal handling for this would be to do a select query based on user input, and if it exists in the database, tell them that, else do the insert query... Problem is, i cant seem to figure out how to bind the result of the select query to a textbox or label so i can compare the results to do that logic.  Any ideas?  This is in asp .net 2.0.  Thanks! -Dan

Update TextBox Binding To SQLCeResultSet

Jan 31, 2008

Hello,

I'm trying to develop a VB.NET (2005) form with just a ComBobox and a TextBox.

I bind a combobox with the SqlCeResultset (Scrollable | Updatable ). Do the same with the TextBox.
Combobox1.DataSource = rsResultSet
TextBox1.DataBindings.Add("Text", rsResultSet, "Obs")

This works (when I change the Combo item the textbox changes as well) but any changes to the textbox text do not reach the DB.If i change the Combobox item and back the old data is still there. If i look at the result
set it does appear as updateable.

How can I update the SqlCeResultset when I change the TextBox text?

Thanks

Binding Stored Procedure OUTPUT Parameters To A TextBox, How?

Oct 11, 2004

Hi all;

How can I show the Name & Age of the selected student's ID in the appropriate TextBox(s) (txtName & txtAge)?

BTW:

My "ShowStudent" stored procedure:

ALTER PROCEDURE ShowStudent
@ID int
AS
SELECT ID, Name, Age FROM Student WHERE ID=@ID
RETURN

And this is the code for "Show" button:

' Which SP? Connection?
Dim cmdSelect As New SqlCommand("ShowStudent", con)
cmdSelect.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

'-----[ Spacifay SP parameters ]-----

'ID
cmdSelect.Parameters.Add("@ID", SqlDbType.Int, 4)
cmdSelect.Parameters("@ID").Value = CType(txtID.Text, Integer)

'Open Connection
con.Open()

'-----[ Execute the select command ]-----

cmdSelect.ExecuteReader()

'----------------------------------------

'Close connection
con.Close()

'========================================================
End Sub

So, do I have to use an OUTPUT parameter in the stored procedure? If Yes, How to get its (the parameter) value and bind it to the appropriate TextBox?

Hope my question is clear!!

Thanks in advanced!

SqlDataSource And Parameter Binding

Jan 10, 2006

Hi, I am using a SQL DataSource with a few parameters. I need to specify the value of the parameters at run time but I need a custom way to do it as the value needs to be calculated not come from Cookie, Control, Form, Profile, QueryString or Session. Is there a way to bind your own value to these parameters. For instance if I had a variable how would I bind that to the parameter?
At the moment i am doing the following which works but I dont think it is the correct way
dsMyDataSource.SelectParameters["MyParameter"].DefaultValue = MyCalculatedValue;
In previous projects i have added a value to the Session and then bound the parameter value to the session but that doesnt seem like a good solution either.
Thanks for any help you can give.

SqlDataSource Parameter Binding (Updating)

Oct 6, 2006

Hello, I just started working with ASP.NET.I'm trying to use the CheckBoxList Control.  As I understand it, you can bind a SqlDataSource to this control and it loads the list for you.  However tp precheck the items, you have to do this manually.  This part works fine.  Next part was to save whatever the user checks.  I wrote stored Procedure and now just trying to pass 1 parameter to the stored procedure using a second SqlDataSource.  I get the error: "A severe error occurred on the current command.  The results, if any, should be discarded."Here is the second datasource I am using to try and save the data:<asp:SqlDataSource ID="sds_PersonRole" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:Development %>"SelectCommand="usp_selectPersonRole"SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure"UpdateCommand="usp_updatePersonRole"UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure"><SelectParameters>    <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="gv_Person" Name="PERSON_ID" PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int32" /></SelectParameters><UpdateParameters>    <asp:Parameter Name="strXML" Size="8000" Type="String" />    <asp:Parameter Direction="InputOutput" Name="err_msg" Type="String" Size="150" DefaultValue="0" /></UpdateParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>I have a code behind file with the following modules:  (btnEditPerson is clicked to start the process.  the sds_PersonDetails is updated via form contolls and works fine.)  Error occurs on the bolded line (Stored procedure is just accepting the string and saving to a field.  It works fine, I tested it.  Its just erroring out before  it runs the stored procedure. Protected Sub btnEditPerson_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnEditPerson.Click    sds_PersonDetails.Update()    gv_Person.DataBind()    sds_PersonRole.Update()End Sub     Protected Sub sds_PersonRole_Updating(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceCommandEventArgs) Handles sds_PersonRole.Updating        Dim command As Data.Common.DbCommand        command = e.Command        'un-check all checkboxlist items (count - 1 to account for starting at 0)        Dim listCount As Integer = cbl_Role.Items.Count() - 1        Dim strXML As String        strXML = "<personRole>"        For x As Integer = 0 To listCount            If cbl_Role.Items(x).Selected() = False Then                strXML = strXML & "<person id='" & gv_Person.SelectedValue & "' />"                strXML = strXML & "<role id='" & cbl_Role.Items(x).Value & "' />"            End If        Next        strXML = strXML & "</personRole>"        command.Parameters("@strXML").Value = strXML        lbl_ErrMsg.Text = command.Parameters("@err_msg").Value.ToString()    End Sub

Binding A SqlDataSource, To A GridView At Runtime

Mar 8, 2006

Hello
I'm experiencing some problems, binding a SqlDataSource to a GridView.
The following code creates the SqlDataSource:            string strConn = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString;            string strProvider = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ProviderName;                        SqlDataSource ds = new SqlDataSource(strProvider, strConn);            ds.SelectCommand = "SELECT * FROM rammekategori";
Then i bind the SqlDataSource to a GridView:
         GridView1.DataSource = ds;            GridView1.DataBind();

ErrorMessage:
Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0.
Exception Details: System.ArgumentException: Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0.Line 24:             GridView1.DataBind();Am i totally off target here? Can it be something about, that you have to set the datasource of the gridview, before the Page_Load event?

Thanks - MartinHN

What Is The Difference - Using Sqldatasource Control Vs Binding To Dataset Then Calling Databound()

Oct 26, 2007

Ive run into a situation where some code im using will not function the same when between these two cases.  So, this has me wondering what is going on behind the scenes.  What is the sequence of events that are occurring that would possibly be messing things up.Here is the sample codeIts a gridview that is using a sqldatasource control.  The code works fine, but if you want to bind the grid to a dataset and call databind yourself, things dont work as expected and the other features that the code performs just isnt happening, at least not for me.

SqlDataSource+ControlParameter+Textbox

Jan 15, 2008

Hi!
I have a page (a search page) with sqldatasource, gridview and set of textboxes. The sqldatasource is using stored procedure with parameters. Using the visual wizard i'm associating the parameters with apropriate textboxes controls. It all works, like a charm.
The problem arises when I input some dangerous code in any textbox , like ' or % .
I'm having exception about unenclosed strings, generally info about the possibility of sql injection.
I thought that using ControlParameters, any Parameter in fact is sqlinjection safe, but apparently it isn't.
Does anyone know the right way of achieving my goal? It's very urgent.

Setting SqlDatasource Parameters From TextBox

Feb 17, 2008

I have a sqlDatasource with 3 parameters based on the input of 3 text boxes on the page. The datasource returns sales details for a company based on a from and to date. I am attempting to set the value of the 3 parameters in the Selecting event of the datasource control but I'm not getting any data back. If I set the values literally then I get data back. Also when I step through the code I can see the 3 parameters getting their values from the textboxes and the drop down list as they should. Inserting TextBox Values To Database Using SqlDataSource.Insert Method

Oct 25, 2006

Hi, it is few days I posted here my question, but received no answer. Maybe the problem is just my problem, maybe I put my question some strange way. OK, I try to put it again, more simply. I have few textboxes, their values I need to transport to database. I set SqlDataSource, parameters... and used SqlDataSource.Insert() method. I got NULL values in the database's record. So I tried find problem by using Microsoft's sample code from address http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.sqldatasource.insert.aspx. After some changes I tried that code and everything went well, data were put into database. Next step was to separate code beside and structure of page to two separate files followed by new test. Good again, data were delivered to database. Next step: to use MasterPage, very simple, just with one ContentPlaceHolder. After this step the program stoped to deliver data to database and delivers only NULLs to new record. It is exactly the same problem which I have found in my application. The functionless code is here:http://forums.asp.net/thread/1437716.aspx I cannot find any answer this problem on forums worldwide. I cannot believe it is only my problem. I compared html code of two generated pages - with maserPage and without. There are differentions in code in ids' of input fields generated by NET.Framework:Without masterpage:<input name="NazevBox" type="text" id="NazevBox" /><span id="RequiredFieldValidator1" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a company name.</span><p><input name="CodeBox" type="text" id="CodeBox" /><span id="RequiredFieldValidator2" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a phone number.</span><p><input type="submit" name="Button1" value="Insert New Shipper" onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions(&quot;Button1&quot;, &quot;&quot;, true, &quot;&quot;, &quot;&quot;, false, false))" id="Button1" /> With masterpage:<input name="ctl00$Obsah$NazevBox" type="text" id="ctl00_Obsah_NazevBox" /><span id="ctl00_Obsah_RequiredFieldValidator1" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a company name.</span><p><input name="ctl00$Obsah$CodeBox" type="text" id="ctl00_Obsah_CodeBox" /><span id="ctl00_Obsah_RequiredFieldValidator2" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a phone number.</span><p><input type="submit" name="ctl00$Obsah$Button1" value="Insert New Shipper" onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions(&quot;ctl00$Obsah$Button1&quot;, &quot;&quot;, true, &quot;&quot;, &quot;&quot;, false, false))" id="ctl00_Obsah_Button1" />In second case ids' of input fields have different names, but I hope it is inner business of NET.Framework.There must be something I haven't noticed, maybe NET's bug, maybe my own. Thanks for any suggestion.

Reference Textbox In Other Textbox

Sep 12, 2007

Hi!
I dont know if i will explain this correctly, but my problem is with reporting service.
I'm supposed to Sum value in one textbox and than that sum use it in sum in other textbox.

Something like this:
Sum(Fields!Abc.Value/(Fields!dfg.Value+Sum(Fields!abc.Value)),"matrix1_RowGroup1")*100
I get error msg 'The Value expression for the textbox 'textbox49' contains an aggregate function (or RunningValue or RowNumber functions) in the argument to another aggregate function (or RunningValue). Aggregate functions cannot be nested inside other aggregate functions.'

Something like this wont work either Sum(Fields!abc.Value/ReportItems("textbox56").Value)*100
Error The Value expression for the textbox 'textbox55' uses an aggregate function on a report item. Aggregate functions can be used only on report items contained in page headers and footers.

So, pls help if you know how to reference textbox in other in body of report.
Thx.

Help!!! Gridview Binding

Mar 20, 2008

Hey guys, Am in need of help please, basically the program im working with at the moment is when you add a New Contract, it will grab the Contract Number you have entered, Post it over to another page, then using that number bind a Gridview. The SQL being "SELECT Contract_ID, Contract_Number, Start_Date, End_Date, Quarterly_Rent FROM ECS_Contracts_Test WHERE Contract_Number = " & conNoVar (this being the Contract Number of the recently added Contract), however then it comes to Bind the Grid it kicks up an System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Syntax error converting the nvarchar value
'2009P7899' to a column of data type int.But the Column Contract_Number is set to Varchar and all I really want to do is to create this gridview using this criteria and not convert anything! The Contract_ID is an int, which is needed as I increment it. Heres the error code:   Public Sub BindtheGrid()'Bind the Contract Grid, where ContractID is used
Dim SQL As String = "Contract_ID, Contract_Number, Start_Date, End_Date, Quarterly_Rent"
Dim objConn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(ConnectionString)
Dim cmdstock As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("SELECT " & SQL & " FROM ECS_Contracts_Test WHERE Contract_Number = " & contractQueryID, objConn)
cmdstock.CommandType = CommandType.Text
objConn.Open()
GridView1.DataSource = cmdstock.ExecuteReader()
GridView1.DataBind()
objConn.Close()
End Sub If you need any more information then please let me know. Mucho Aprreciated

as ftm_child ON ftm_parent.ForumTopicMessageID = ftm_child.ParentMessageID
WHERE ftm_parent.ForumTopicID = @ForumTopicID
ORDER BY ftm_parent.CreateDate
See the purple ftm_parent.ForumtopicMessageID.  If I hard-code that to a 2, this works.  With the fieldname there, SQL Server Management Studio says:
Msg 4104, Level 16, State 1, Procedure udForumTopicMessageByForumTopicID, Line 9
The multi-part identifier "ftm_parent.ForumTopicMessageID" could not be bound.
If any experts out there can help me out with this, I'm sure it wouldn't take much to fix.

with the ..."all items starting with the letter a"

I have writen SELECT WHERE statement that (a%) which works fine at pulling what I want to the gridview

and displays it fine.

Does the gridview conect to the source..... and the drop dlbox connect to the grid

Or each have its own conection to the source........or drop conects to source and grid

conects to

You can see my dilema .

Help With Connecting To SQL Database And Binding

Jun 30, 2006

I am new to .net and I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express with SQL Server 2005 Express.  What I would like to do is connect to my SQL database (which resides in the app_data folder) and open a table and pull out a field and place it in either a textbox or label on the page. No editing or deleting. Just simple one field binding.  By the way, I can do this with all the cool built-in tools of VWD, but I want to know how to do it all by hand.  I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out.
