Multiple Tables In XML Datasource

Jan 9, 2007

Hi,

I have an XML datasource that has multiple nodes at the same level. I need to retrieve contents of two nodes in a dataset. If I have an hierarchy, then I am able to get the information from two nodes. In the current data source, both the nodes are at the same level, without any relationship. I tried the following Query but it returns just the first node.

Please help me.

TIA.

Ashish

Help Adding Tables To Remote Sql Datasource

Jul 5, 2005

I'm using net2.0 and SQL server express locally and have succeseffully placed my connection string in my sebconfig file and made connection and grids and detail etc, etc. Now I want to publish what I've done. So I got a free account at maximumasp beta 2.0. They give some room on a sql 2000 server and a empty database. Now I want to add the Northwind table to that DB but I don't have Enterprise manager and have no idea how to add the tables.Can someone please help?Thanks!Rich

'unable To Obtain A List Of Tables From The Datasource' Error From Excel

Oct 12, 2007

Hi,
This is a very detailed question, I hope this is the best forum to address it. It is more related to general ODBC access, and less to SQL Server data access.

Calling all ODBC experts!

I am a developer using an ODBC toolkit to connect to my companies metadata management product, which in turn communicates to SQL Server, Oracle, DB2 and other databases. The ODBC toolkit we are using is very old, and has been very stable in accessing data with clients such as Access, Excel, Visio and others. It is a read-only ODBC driver that does not support a lot of advanced query and data manipulation features, such as catalog.

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 to debug the ODBC calls that Excel is making when attempting to load data through the External Data Wizard. The Excel version I am using is 2003. The method that I am using to attempt to load data is with 'Data | Import External Data | Import Data'. When that dialog appears, I select 'New Source...' then 'ODBC DSN'. I then select my DSN and click Next.

At this point, I get back the error 'unable to obtain a list of tables from the datasource'.

What is frustrating is, if I do 'Data | New Database Query' and use MSQuery to load the data, everything works fine.

As I mentioned I am using VC2005 and debugging, I believe the problem has to do with the capabilities of our driver and the columns that Excel is binding to return data. In this call, Excel is binding two columns - Table Qualifer (

TABLE_QUALIFIER (1)) and Remarks (TABLE_REMARKS(5)). Our driver does not support qualifiers, so we return a NULL for that value:

case TABLE_QUALIFIER:

fSqlTypeIn = SQL_CHAR;

rgbValueIn = NULL;

cbValueIn = SQL_NULL_DATA;

Excel makes the SQLTables() call, which successfully returns the entire list of tables from our server product. It then attempts to SQLBind the two columns I mentioned above. The first call to SQLFetch returns with SQL_SUCCESS but the ODBCGetData call fills the QUALFIER column with a NULL. So obviously, Excel doesn't like this value and then ends up quiting and displaying the message above (I think....) This is confirmed by looking at the ODBC trace calls:

So I began to examine the GetInfo calls. There are probably 100 or so that Excel makes. Anything related to qualifiers or cataloging seems to indicate (according to MSDN) that we do not support it. So my thinking was, if Excel properly identifies that we don't support qualifers, why does it attempt to bind the column? Is this a flaw in Excel, or are there some other GetInfo properties that I am not properly setting?

The attributes I am setting (that seem related) are:

SQL_QUALIFIER_LOCATION = 0
SQL_QUALIFIER_USAGE = 0
SQL_QUALIFER_TERM = ""
SQL_CATALOG_LOCATION = 0
SQL_CATALOG_NAME = "N"
SQL_CATALOG_TERM=""
SQL_CATALOG_USAGE=0

Looking at ODBC trace logs, the only GetInfo values that Excel is quering is SQL_QUALIFIER_LOCATION, SQL_QUALIFIER_TERM and SQL_QUALIFIER_USAGE. According to the MSDN documentation, an application is supposed to query SQL_CATALOG_NAME to determine if catalogs are supported. I know it is not, because I don't see it in the ODBC trace log, or my breakpoints in VC2005 are never hit.

I realize this is a HUGE question. I hope that I came across clear and that my question is understandable. I guess what it comes down to is - (maybe some Excel engineers can answer this one) - is this method of loading data into Excel require a Table Qualifier? If not, how can I configure my settings so that it asks for Table Name (as MsQuery does) instead?

Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

Trouble Using ADOX To Create Linked Tables In Jet Database From An ODBC Datasource

Jun 5, 2007

Hai,

I am using ADOX to create linked tables in a jet database from an ODBC datasource.
The tables in the ODBC data source does not have a primary key.
so I am only able to create read only linked tables.But I want to update the records also.
I tried adding a primary key column to the linked table while creating the link.
but I am getting an error while adding the table to the catalog.

The error message is "Invalid Argument".

I use the following code for creating the linked table

Sub CreateLinkedTable(ByVal strTargetDB As String, ByVal strProviderString As String, ByVal strSourceTbl As String, ByVal strLinkTblName As String)

Dim catDB As ADOX.Catalog
Dim tblLink As ADOX._Table

Dim ADOConnection As New ADODB.Connection

ADOConnection.Open("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & "Data Source=" & strTargetDB & ";User Id=admin;Password=;")

catDB = New ADOX.Catalog

catDB.ActiveConnection = ADOConnection

tblLink = New ADOX.Table

With tblLink

' Name the new Table and set its ParentCatalog property
' to the open Catalog to allow access to the Properties
' collection.
.Name = strLinkTblName
.ParentCatalog = catDB

' Set the properties to create the link.
Dim adoxPro As ADOX.Property

adoxPro = .Properties("Jet OLEDB:Create Link")
adoxPro.Value = True

adoxPro = .Properties("Jet OLEDB:Link Provider String")
adoxPro.Value = strProviderString

adoxPro = .Properties("Jet OLEDB:Remote Table Name")
adoxPro.Value = strSourceTbl

End With

'Adding primary key,
'***** the source column name is "Code" ******
tblLink.Keys.Append("PrimaryKey", ADOX.KeyTypeEnum.adKeyPrimary, "Code")

'Append the table to the Tables collection.
'******The exception occurs on the following line***********
catDB.Tables.Append(tblLink)

'Append the primary index to table.
catDB = Nothing

End Sub

If I avoid the line for adding the primary key,everything works fine,but the table ctreated is readonly.

Thanks in advance

Wcf For Xml Datasource

Aug 28, 2006

Hi, guys

the app.config in the service host:

<configuration>

<appSettings>

<add key="BaseReportingAddress" value="http://localhost:8999/ReportHandlerService"/>

</appSettings>

<system.serviceModel>

<services>

<service name="Reporting_Handler.ReportHandlerService">

<endpoint address="http://localhost:8999/ReportHandlerService"

</service>

</services>

<behaviors>

<behavior name="ReportingServiceBehavior">

<metadataPublishing

enableGetWsdl="true"

enableMetadataExchange="true"

enableHelpPage="false">

</metadataPublishing>

</behavior>

</behaviors>

I set the datasource type as xml and the connection string to http://localhost:8999/ReportHandlerService, the query string for dataset is

<Query>
<SoapAction>
http://tempuri.org/IReportingHandler/GetTestString
</SoapAction>
<Method Namespace="http://tempuri.org/IReportingHandler/"
Name="GetTestString">
</Method>
</Query>

but it doesn't work, I tried use a pure asp.net web service and it works. can anyone help me to set the connecting string for datasource and query for dataset when it using wcf as the web service? Thanks in advance.

What Is A Datasource Used For?

Mar 18, 2008

Hi All,

I have a question about the datasource that we create on the Report Manager. What is it used for? In the below connection string which is given in the "Connection String" text box of a datasource link:

"Data Source=ProdServer;Initial Catalog=Northwind"

What is this datasource used for? Is it used only to use the ReportServer database or even our queries incorporated in the RDL files will be run against this datasource? I think the latter should not happen because while creating RDL files also, we provide a connection string to run the stored procedures against that datasource.

Please let me know about the same.

Thanks a lot and let me know if the question is not clear.

Sql Datasource Not Updating

Mar 6, 2007

I have this web store that I have been creating.  When a customer goes to check out, he has to log in, then he is redirected to a page where he can view/add/or edit shipping and billing address.  I have based all the sql statements on the profile username, adding records and retrieving them works just fine.  When I go to change something in the info it uses an sql statement that updates based on "Where AccountUserName = @AccountUserName", I have @AccountUserName set to Profile("Username").  Keep in mind this works fine for adding new or bring up current records.  I even put in code in the updated event for the sql data source to post a msgbox telling me how many rows were affected, it says 1 even though I dont see any change in the data.   What am I doing wrong here, it's driving me nuts, its just a very simple update.

Help! C# - Forms - Datasource

Mar 14, 2007

My god.All I want to do is post the contents of a web form to a database sql express 2005 or access using C#.  Why can I find nothing for this very simple process online?Can you tell I am totally frustrated? So lets say i have a few text fields and I want to click submit and have that entered into a table.  I use C# for code behind.  So I can do basic C# programming and I can to webforms with visual web developer 2005 dragging and dropping for textboxs and a button to the aspx page. But then the mystery begins for me.  How the hell do I simple post that form data to the table.  I understand connection string basics.  I aslo can design and create tables. But tying this all together is becoming a problem.  I don't want to use gridview formview detailview or any of that canned UI stuff.  I also don't understand VB and when I see VB examples they only cloud my already cloud ASP.NET world. Please help by posting examples, and maybe some links or books to add to my newbish collection. Thanks,Frank

SQL Datasource And 'Apostrophes'

Jan 2, 2008

I am using a SQLDatasource to populate a dataview as illustrated below.  I run into a problem when I search for a "LastName" that includes an (') Apostrophe ( e.g. O'Reilly) . Searchin for the whole name there is no problem, but when I search for simply O, or O' I get errors.
 I am not sure ...when to address names with an apostrophe...
1) On insertion to the database (using a  "Replace(LastName, "'", "''") 2)  or after they have been entered and they are to be searched for.
If scenario 1, can anyone provide the best way to do this...If scenario 2, how would that be worked into the SQL Datasource code below....
I have tried several variations with the times SQL Datasource to no avail....
I would appreciate any help !

 I know this is simple, but I figured I'd ask. I don't want to do a work around , like a hidden textbox with the value assigned, and then link the datasource to the tb control, seems extremely hackish.

XML DataSource Issues

Aug 20, 2007

Hi All,

I am using SSRS 2005 (Report Designer), and in 1 of the Report, I have a Report Parameter for example say IMask (Dropdown List), which I am populating by values from the following XML file (Imask.xml)

<?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
<REPORTCONFIG>
<INVALIDMASK>
<INDEX>0</INDEX>
<IMASK>00000000</IMASK>
<DESC>Custom Created</DESC>
</INVALIDMASK>
<INVALIDMASK>
<INDEX>1</INDEX>
<IMASK>FFFFFFFF</IMASK>
<DESC>Custom Created1</DESC>
</INVALIDMASK>
</REPORTCONFIG>

I have created a XML DataSet whose DataSource is of €śType : XML€śand get the values from the above mentioned XML file by using following XML query :

REPORTCONFIG {}/ INVALIDMASK

The Result of the above XML query is:

INDEX | IMASK | DESC
--------------------------------------------------------------
0 00000000 Custom Created
1 FFFFFFFF Custom Created1

Now, the report Parameter (IMask) which is a DDL has
€śvalue field€?= IMASK and €ślabel field€?= DESC

So far so good, but what I really want :

1) in case of label field is something like this:

€ślabel field€?= IMASK : DESC (for eg; 00000000 : Custom Created 1)

2) If no nodes(<INVALIDMASK>) are present in the XML file, I get no results when the above XML query is fired. So, Is there any way of getting the count of rows returned by XML query.
And in case of no rows I want my Report Parameter (IMask) to have
€śvalue field€?= NONE and €ślabel field€?= NONE

Regards,
abhi_viking

Changing DataSource With C#

May 6, 2008

So I'm trying to run through a directory of reports and change the data source of every report from whatever it has now, to a shared data source. I'm using C#.

If I understand the process correctly, I want to .GetItemDataSources on the reports service and store it in an array of datasources. Then I want to Change the name and reference of the datasource to match something that I alredy have elsewhere. Here is the code...

foreach (CatalogItem item in _reportsService.ListChildren("/" + reportingServicesRoot, true))
{
if (item.Type == ItemTypeEnum.Report)
{
try
{
DataSource[] Sources = new DataSource[1];
Sources = _reportsService.GetItemDataSources(item.Path);
DataSourceDefinitionOrReference Reference = _reportsService.GetDataSourceContents(@"/Data Sources/" + reportingServicesRoot);

Sources[0].Item = Reference;
Sources[0].Name = reportingServicesRoot;

_reportsService.SetItemDataSources(item.Path, Sources);

}
catch (Exception ex)
{
DataSource[] s = _reportsService.GetItemDataSources(item.Path);
throw ex;
}
}
}

Here is the error I get....

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: The data source 'SummerOf70' cannot be found. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.DataSourceNotFoundException: The data source 'SummerOf70' cannot be found. at Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataExtensions.DataSourceInfoCollection.CombineOnSetDataSources(DataSourceInfoCollection newDataSources) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.SetItemDataSourcesAction.SetReportDataSources(CatalogItem item, DataSource[] dataSources) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.SetItemDataSourcesAction.PerformActionNow() at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.RSSoapAction`1.Execute() at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WebServer.ReportingService2005Impl.SetItemDataSources(String Item, DataSource[] DataSources) --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WebServer.ReportingService2005Impl.SetItemDataSources(String Item, DataSource[] DataSources) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WebServer.ReportingService2005.SetItemDataSources(String Item, DataSource[] DataSources)

I know the DataSource is there.

Am I going about this all wrong? Should I delete the datasource first and then create a new one?

I look forward to clarifying my poor grammar. Thanks in advance!

XML File As Datasource?

Hi,

Is it possible to use a XML file as a datasource when setting up a new report, instead of the query technique?

You can do this in Crystal, but Reporting Services only seems interested in queries as a datasource.

Clicking Dataset -> New Dataset puts you straight into the Query dialog with no option to insert an XML file instead.

(example scenario: The XML file could be the output of some system (incompatible with RS), that you then wish to report from).

I have 2 seperate SqlDataSources for 2 distinct filters. How do I get a simple row count for each SqlDataSource? It seems the only way is by using the ObjectDataSource and going through that whole mess (paging, etc.). And unfortunately, you can't simply get the number of rows in the GridView that represents each DataSource if AllowPaging is true for the GridView.
This is frustrating.

Eliminate Duplicates From Datasource

Mar 26, 2007

Hi All,
I have a SP, which i run inside a for loop.
I am running the SP for all the products in a listbox.
So for each product i am having the feature extracted through the SP
But some features are the same for 2, 3 products.
So in the datatable, i am getting the featrues repeated.
IS there any way to eliminate the duplicates from datatable, from server side?
Hope i am not confusing.
Eg: product1 ---  test1, test2, test3
product2 --- test2, test4
so the datatable has -- test1, test2, test3, test2, test4
-- i have to eliminate one test2 from this.
Any ideas???
Thanks
