Hi all,I have a table called PTRANS with few columns (see create script below).I have created a view on top that this table VwTransaction (See below)I can now run this query without a problem:select * from dbo.VwTransactionwhereAssetNumber = '101001' andTransactionDate <= '7/1/2003'But when I create an index on the PTRANS table using the command below:CREATE INDEX IDX_PTRANS_CHL# ON PTRANS(CHL#)The same query that ran fine before, fails with the error:Server: Msg 242, Level 16, State 3, Line 1The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted inan out-of-range datetime value.I can run the same query by commeting out the AssetNumber clause and itworks fine. I can also run the query commenting out the TransactionDatecolumn and it works fine. But when I have both the conditions in theWHERE clause, it gives me this error. Dropping the index solves theproblem.Can anyone tell me why an index would cause a query to fail?Thanks a lot in advance,AmirCREATE TABLE [PTRANS] ([CHL#] [varchar] (100) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,[CHCENT] [numeric](2, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHYYMM] [numeric](4, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHDAY] [numeric](2, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHTC] [char] (2) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOCREATE VIEW dbo.vwTransactionsASSELECT CONVERT(datetime, dbo.udf_AddDashes(REPLICATE('0', 2 -LEN(CHCENT)) + CONVERT(varchar, CHCENT) + REPLICATE('0', 4 -LEN(CHYYMM))+ CONVERT(varchar, CHYYMM) + REPLICATE('0', 2 -LEN(CHDAY)) + CONVERT(varchar, CHDAY)), 20) AS TransactionDate,CHL# AS AssetNumber,CHTC AS TransactionCodeFROM dbo.PTRANSWHERE (CHCENT <> 0) AND (CHTC <> 'RA')*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!

Dear All,
I am new to MS SQL. One VB application that I need to maintain using it.
There is one problem reported but I couldn't explain: one field is declared
as Char (20), but the application seems able to insert a string with length
even 30. There is no character truncatd when retrieved neither.
However, I cannot simulate the case in the MSSQL database manager. When I executed a SQL script to insert, I was simply not allowed to do so.
Any explanation to the sDid anyone encounter same thing before?
Thanks for any hint.

I am so frustrated, I have upsized a data base from access to sql 6.5 and now had to clip data to fit into a 255 field? I have been looking for weeks to find a solution for this.
I am writing a discussion board very much like this one and need the message text to hold more than 255 chars. I have tried to create a table with a blob and text, The text will not allow me to specify the size when creating from a script (ASP) using create table. If I dont specify a size, it creates it as 16?
Been working on this for several weeks and cannot locate anyone that can answer this question, I want to create a column that will hold more than 255 chars.
IS there something in Sql 6.5 that I need to set to allow more than 255 on a text field? What am I doing wrong?
Please respond. Thank you.

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The conversion of a char data type to a
datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Notes: all pages that have this error either has a repeater or datagrid which load data when page loading.
At first I thought the problem is with the date, but then I can see
that some other pages that has datagrid ( that has a date field) work
just fine.

Please help!!!We had a sql server 7 DB, with a char 8 field, in which some of thedata was only 7 characters in length.Via a type 4 JDBC driver, we got back a NON space padded String.This server got upgraded to sql server 2000. Now, via the type 4 JDBCdriver, we get a String padded field!!I understand there is a ODBC setting for ANSI padding on/off, but thetype 4 doesn;t use the OdBC-JDBC bridge...so configuration could beaffecting the data coming back?No one here can work out why. Any ideas?

I am using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Express 2005. The database was converted from MS Access 2003 to SQL Express by using the upsize wizard.
I would like to store the current date & time in a column in a table. This column is a smalldatetime column called 'lastlogin'.
The code I'm using is:
Dim sqlcommand As New SqlCommand _
("UPDATE tableXYZ SET Loggedin = 'True', LastLogin = GetDate() WHERE employeeID = '" & intEmployeeID.ToString & "'", conn)
Try
conn.Open()
sqlcommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
conn.Close()
Catch ex As Exception
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)
End Try
This code works fine on my local machine and local SQL server. However at the client side this code results in the error as mentioned in the subject of this thread. I first used 'datetime.now' instead of 'getdate()', but that caused the same error. Then I changed the code to 'getdate()', but the error still remains.
The server at the client is running Windows Server 2000 UK . My local machiine is running WIndows XP Dutch.
Maybe the conversion from Dutch to UK has something to do with it. But this should be solved by using the 'Getdate()' function..... ?

I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.
I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.
I hope someone can help me work through this.

I need to send some long emails, problem is when I send a long body text CDO breaks up the message with spaces in the middle of words. I read on this forum the solution would be to insert CR/LF into the message so that CDO would not have to break it up at every 1k of text. I have tried using CHAR(13) as BOL suggests, but this is not doing as intended, it inserts a space and not the CR/LF I need.
Any suggestions how to insert CR/LF or why my installation is not responding to CHAR(13) is there some other escape code I could use?

Okay, this is probably my own stupidity but here goes. I am trying to make a very rudimentary package. I've got a data flow that has a flat file source. This source has fields delimited by the | symbol. I give the fields in the flat file source names. The first field is always exactly 1 character. When I use the advanced editor to look at the fields' properties, I see the first field, called ProductLine, is considered to be of SSIS internal data type DT_STR with a length of 50. I change the 50 to 1 because that is as long as that field is.
No matter what I do, when I close the advanced editor and then open it again, the field length for ProductLine is again set to 50. The field is 1 long, not 50 long. How can I make the setting of 1 be retained? Nothing I do changes it. What is the point of allowing the length to be editable if the edit is not retained?
Thanks in advance,
SW

I have a OLE DB Source going to a flat file destination. My source is a sql variable with "select * from tablename" which have varchar datatypes. Yet I'm getting trailing spaces at the end of some of my columns (for instance, my address column).
I've checked the data by doing a "select Max(Len(address)) from tablename" and the max is only like 34 chars, yet each of them have 100 chars total.
Taking a look at my flat file connection, the outputColumnWidth is 100, and datatype is string [DT_STR]. Am I crazy? What's the problem here? Is the DT_STR datatype the equivalent of char, and not varchar?
Any help, of course, will be appreciated.

Our shop's DTS packages usually use ActiveX scripts to dynamically name vendor text file inputs by date (YYYYMMDD), which we load Monday through Friday to our databases. For our 2005 server I am trying to dynamically name a 'flat file source' filename in SSIS as described in the article at the url http://www.mssqltips.com/tip.asp?tip=1084.
I am writing the expression (DT_STR, 4,1252) YEAR(DATEADD( "dd",0, getdate() ) to create a variable named FileName to capture today's 4 character year. If I could get a good preview of this value I would concatenate the month and day strings to it and use the resultant variable as part of the fully qualifeid name.
For the variable I've marked the 'evaluateasexpression' true and put the value type as str. But when I preview this expression I get the error message, 'expression has the result type of DT_STR which can not be converted to a supported type.'
What supported type? Does anyone see what the problem is?

Hi all I am trying to convert the string "(null)" in the [PASSWORD] column of my table to an actual NULL value. I have tried to use two different forms of a conditional operator to achieve this end. However I am getting the below errors both can be summed up with the following statement.
DT_STR operand cannot be used with the conditional operation. The expression directly below however is using a type DT_I4 in the conditional clause as this is what FINDSTRING returns. Hence the equivalencey test to the literal integer 0. So I must say I am somewhat confused by this. Does anyone know why neither of the below statements are working?
Also is there an easy way to accomplish what I am trying to do - convert the string "(null)" in the [PASSWORD] column of my table to an actual NULL value?
FINDSTRING([PASSWORD], "(null)", 1) == 0 ? [PASSWORD] : NULL(DT_STR, 255, 1252)
Error at Administrator Data Flow Task [Derived Column [1985]]: For operands of the conditional operator, the data type DT_STR is supported only for input columns and cast operations. The expression "FINDSTRING(PASSWORD,"(null)",1) == 0 ? PASSWORD : NULL(DT_STR,255,1252)" has a DT_STR operand that is not an input column or the result of a cast, and cannot be used with the conditional operation. To perform this operation, the operand needs to be explicitly cast with a cast operator.
LOWER( TRIM( [PASSWORD] ) ) != "(null)" ? [PASSWORD] : NULL(DT_STR, 255, 1252)

Hi
I'm trying to put together a integration package that loads in type 1 dimensional data. If the item is new then the data is inserted if it already exists then it is overwritten. My approach has been to use the lookup operator to match the source values against a generic mappings table. The data that is matched goes off into the error flow and is inserted as new rows in the dimension table. The matched lookup rows are sent through into an update operator. the problem comes when there are no new rows for the lookup operator to find it still want to do the inserts and so exits with an error code.
I tried to change the data flow so that it uses and outer join and conditional split to decide what rows are matched and what are new, however when there are no new rows it reaches the inserts and exits with an error again.
Is containing the logic for insert and update in the one data flow a poor approach? should the conditional processing logic be placed in the control flow?
For the Oracle people out there all I'm trying to do is a MERGE!!! there must be an easier way
Cheers
Al

Hiya, last one (for a while), I swear. I'm getting the hang of this now (famous last words).
I've got a data file saved as an image type in my SQL Mobile database,
and I'm trying to send it over to my SS2005 Server via RDA, which seems
the simplest way possible. The application will only have
periodic rows to send over and insert into the Server's DB, so it seems
like doing a merge or a push is unnecessary overhead.
Is there some way to include parameters in the SQL string argument to
the method SubmitSQL? Or, embed the byte array into the SQL string? For
the life of me, I can't figure out how to do this.
So, if column data has type image, my statement would look like what?
string sSQL = "INSERT INTO sensor_stream (data) VALUES (what goes here?)";
rda.SubmitSql(SQL, strSQLConn);
.....
I've seen the solution being able to assign the image by using
parameters, but it seems that solution is not an option in this case?
Thank you in advance for your time and effort, I appreciate any and all help very much.
-Dana
