Can I Use SQL Server 2005 Standard To Create And Host Db For Website?
Dec 28, 2005
Hi guys,
I am just wondering what's the difference of sql server 2005 standard and enterprise editions. can I use SQL server 2005 to host a database for a website?
I'm trying to practice with the website starter kits using Visual Studio 2005. But so far, I haven't been able to run the mentioned websites because the connection they use is against SQL Server Express...
I don't have SQL Server Express. Instead, what I have installed is SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.
I'm not even able to use the new APS.NET WeSAT application to administer the sites because allway get the "Time out" error.
Do any of you know how to resolve this whole situation?

I'm brand new to web and ASP programming, but experienced with VB/VB.NET and SQL Server 2000 programming. I followed a tutorial and built a little website that lets you create a user login, login and change your password. I built this in Visual Studio 2005 using VB code and my understanding is that the site uses a SQLExpress database. There's an aspnetdb.mdf and .ldf file in the App_Data folder. I want to deploy the website to a web server that is hosting SQL Server 2005, not express. Can someone be explicit about steps to take in order to do that? I've been trying a number of things in the web.config file, but I cannot seem to make a connectionstring that works. I also don't know what to do with the .mdf and .ldf files from the development server--I'm thinking they should not be deployed. Thanks for anything.
Being still a relative newcomer to SQL Server (people may say I'm trying to take on too much being somewhat inexperienced once they read about the problem I'm trying to tackle, but alas...) I'm running into the following problem: I need to create tables in my user database on the fly (using Stored Procedures) so that each table can be created many times in the database but only once for every user. The tables should be named something like "username.Table1", "username.Table2" etc. as opposed to "dbo.Table1". I then want to use the stored procedure from .NET/C# in my web application, so that i can create the complete set of usertables for each of my clients.
Now, I tackled the stored procedure part (that is, it creates all the tables I need with all the parameters I want) and am able to use it from my web application (which took some time to learn but proved quite easy to do), but I cannot seem to get it coupled to the current user (instead of the dbo). Every time I trie, the tables are created as dbo.Table1 and when I try to create a new set, it gives a warning ("table with name such and so already exists..."). I made sure to log in as an authenticated user (using forms authentication) before trying to create the tables but this gives the aforementioned result.
What am I doing wrong? I use Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express and IIS version 5.1
I am trying to use the new Common Language Runtime (CLR) hosting feature to write stored procedures in C# i have addedMicrosfot.sqlserevr.server name spaceand ia m trying to use sqlContext Object as below using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(dbConn)) { connection.Open(); SqlCommand sqlcmd = new SqlCommand("select @@ version", connection); SqlContext.Pipe.ExecuteAndSend(sqlcmd); } i get the below error when i execute (SqlContext.Pipe.ExecuteAndSend(sqlcmd);) System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled by user code Message="The requested operation requires a SqlClr context, which is only available when running in the Sql Server process." Source="System.Data" i checked if (SqlContext.IsAvailable) and it returns false as well. Please le me know how to make it work. Thanks THNQDigital
I don't know why my application on the internet try to access the SQL Server 2005, when the host still having the 2000 edition. I put the following connection string: Data Source=##DBSERVER##;Initial Catalog=##DBNAME##;User ID=##DBUSER##;Password=##DBPASSWORD##;
Isn’t everything fine with that? I created the table by host but dosen’t work. I’m wondering if can I conect straight with Data Base, without register in the server, like with mdb?
This is the error that I’m getting. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I'm creating an app and have SQL Server 2005 Express installed. Most of the hosts now offering SQL Server 2005 are a bit pricey compared to those only offering 2000. Will I have any difficulty uploading my site and running the db on SQL 2000? Thanks in advance.
Has anyone used SQL Server 2005 on a production website? I know that it tops out at 1GB of ram, but it is free. Any idea how much load it will take before you need to move up to the full version?
First of all I am planning to install sql 2005 standard and sql standard sp2 on vista ultimate professional using vs 2008 pro I have some questions about installing sql 2005 what is the best way to install sql 2005 on vista My article I got this from ms 403393 (upgrading sql standard 2005 to sql standard 2005sp2) 1 sql standard .(shortcut right click from cd/dvd not possible) I have heard command prompt start menu, click cmd type run D: cd/dvd exe From a wizard (sql sp2)

f. on the instance page click default instance(default install) g. finish rest of wizard h. apply sql sp2
I also have of seperate question of upgrading sql from vista using a Configuring local admin account account (configuring administration from a wizard-will this notify me by default) I do not want my administrative priviledges elevated. I will be using default configurations for my installations......... I often wish there would a nice picture examples of doing this Please help
I have to create a DSN for SQL-Server. Therefor I use the function "SQLConfigDataSource" from "ODBCCP32.DLL". But the problem is that the SQL-Server does not use the Standard-Portnumber 1433. I've tried to make the DSN with "SERVERNAME xxxx" where xxxx is the Portnumber, sometimes it works, but often it does not. When it does not work, then the Checkbox in the ODBC-Configuration-Tool is checked, so the connection is searching for the standard-port. How can I tell the system that it shall NOT use dynamic configuration?
Hi, the title of this topic about summarises it. I have a dev-machine with SQL Server 2005 Standard edition on it. My host runs SQL Server 2000. What are my options? Is there some sort of backward compatibility? Can i export as 2000? I have no idea and i can't find anything about this particular problem. Thanks
I have an ASP.NET application that runs under the development server. Before deploying to my host I wanted to test it under IIS. I set up a virtual directory under IIS, but when I try to open the home page I get an error Unable to open the physical file "E:CDiskLocalWebSitesDIWSchedulingApp_DataDIWDB.MDF". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".and a code dump showing that the code is breaking at the open connection. A little research on the error indicates that IIS does not have permission to execute the database operation. I can not find any information on how to give IIS this permission in SQL Server 2005 Express. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Hi there, I have a question which I put the company that host my website but I didnt get a conclusive answer. Maybe someone here will be able to advise or help me with my situation. I want to build a database that I will run on my local server and the front end of this will be run using a windows application. I have a website which I run the database on the remote server. What I would like to do is to be able to synchronize certain tables between the two databases (such as updating products table, or orders table). I am using sql server 2005 and I am using the sql server management studio to access my database on the remote server. I did notice there is a synchronzie button. I also came across some 3rd party tools. Not sure if that is the way to go. If anyone as done this before or can give me any suggestions, I would be delighted. Thanks Anthony
Does anyone know if it is legal to use SQL Server 2005 Express in a commercial website? There is no need for SQL Server 2005 so the Express would do the job great.Thx, Viktor
HiI'm trying to convert some verbose SQL Server 2000 T-SQL code that useslots temp tables and the like into a SQL Server 2005 only version, possibly using CTE.What I want to achieve is a menu like that onhttp://www.cancerline.com/cancerlin...9801_6_3_3.aspxNotice how you have the top level menu items, and then child nodesexpanded down to the low level page that link sends you to.Table sql:CREATE TABLE [dbo].[NavigationNode]([NodeId] [int] primary key nonclustered,[Text] [nvarchar](150) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,[AlternativeText] [nvarchar](250) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_ASNULL,[Level] [int] NULL,[ParentNodeId] [int] constraint fk_parent_navnodeforeign key references [NavigationNode] ([NodeId]))Table data:1HomeNULL1NULL2SolutionsNULL113Solutions child1NULL224Solutions child2NULL225ContactNULL116solutions child1 child1NULL337solutions child1 child2NULL338solutions child1 child3NULL339solutions child1 child4NULL3310contact child1NULL25I have started to write some code with the common table expressionsyntax:declare @root int;set @root = 2;WITH Nav([NodeId],[ParentNodeId], [Text], [Level]) AS(SELECT [NodeId], [ParentNodeId], [Text], [Level]FROM [dbo].[NavigationNode]WHERE [ParentNodeId] = @rootUNION ALLSELECT n1.[NodeId], n1.[ParentNodeId], n1.[Text], n1.[Level]FROM [dbo].[NavigationNode] n1INNER JOIN Nav n2ON n1.[ParentNodeId] = n2.[NodeId])SELECT *FROM NavWhich returns:32Solutions child1242Solutions child2263solutions child1 child1373solutions child1 child2383solutions child1 child3393solutions child1 child43However I would prefer to the childnode, and then get parents of thatchild recursively. Doing that would leave me with a result set thatcould add the top level menu items to and have all the data required.Any help is greatly appreciated.-Brian
Hi all, I am stuck with a problem using ASP.Net website. I created a website which accesses a database table in SQL Server 2005. The default.aspx is a form which inserts/updates/deletes data from the database. After creating the website I published it to IIS (Inetpub -> wwwroot). When I use Visual Studio 2005 and build the website and start with debugging. the form comes up and i can insert/update or delete the data from the table as I want. Now, as I have the website published I can access the form from another sharepoint website using the url as /Employee_Data/Default.aspx">http://<mydesktop>/Employee_Data/Default.aspx the form shows up but I am not able to access any of the database. I do not see any errors either. Once I click on the button the page just refreshes but nothing else happens. I have my web.config as :- <?xml version="1.0"?> <configuration> <appSettings/> <connectionStrings/> <system.web> <compilation debug="true"/> <authentication mode="Windows"/> </system.web> </configuration>
Am I missing something? I even have Anonymous access in the IIS inetpub properties. I can even the database as I am the administrator..... I appreciate your suggestions.
SQL Server Express 2005 will not install. I download the necessary package direct from the asp.net website and towards the end of the installation the following error occurs:
"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'."
I get the exact same message for the following:
Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer - same message as above only requesting a valid copy of 'SqlWriter.msi' MSXML6.0 Parser - same message as above only requesting a valid copy of 'msxml6.msi'
Can anyone help? I am desperate to use SQL with Visual Web Developer 2005 and 2008, but I am unable to do so. Please help if you can.
I just have a simple question that can hopefully answer whether I should dive too deeply into Reporting/Analysis Services. I'm looking to run some clustering algorithms on user-inputted keywords on objects within my database (please see http://flickr.com/photos/tags/friends/clusters/ for an example of what I'm talking about). It seems to me that the various reporting methods that SQL Server provides would be an ideal, quick and easy way of providing this for my SQL Server 2005 database.
Can the reporting services provide this type of functionality? And if so, would this be scalable? I would want to be able to access this clustered data in much the same way I do queries across my database and would want them to be done quickly and efficiently.
Where can I further educate myself on this subject?
Right off from the start I would assume that installing SQL Server 2000 or 2005 on Windows Server 2003 that is set up as a web server hosting a website would be against "best practices." Is my assumption right?
Common sense tells me to not to host a website on a pc that is also hosting my database.
I have a SQL Server 2005 evaluation that has already been installed and setup on a server. I believe it originally had a 180 day eval. There have been numerous databases and users added as well as maintenance plan created...
The eval was put on the machine as an interim solution while waiting for paper work and order processiing things to happen. All the paperwork and ordering... have been completed and I now have the real SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition license key ....
I am very new to SQL Server and need to determine ...
1. Can I update the eval copy to become permanently licensed?
2. Would I want to upgrade the eval to permanent? Will I lose any capabilities by keeping the current eval setup?
If it is reasonable to keep the eval setup
3. How do I go about entering the license key to make it permanent?
If it is necessary to install the new Standard Edition...
4. How do I install it while maintaining the already defined databases, data, users, maintenance plan...
I have a central database server that is runnning on SQL 2005 standard edition and Windows server 2003 standard as OS.
I realise that I can use SQL statements to encrypt and decrypt the data inside the standard SQL.
However, how do I read and write the data via an web application coded in C#.net and is also running on the same machine?
Another issue is, I need to replicate some of the data in this SQL standard over to a SQL mobile running on a mobile device running on Windows CE 5.0.
The mobile device also needs to read and write data to the encrypted data via a C#.net application.
Question is, with all these requirements to be met, can I use AES? I know that AES is not available on Windows XP and Windows Server 2000 and I cant find AES in the .net compact framework.
how do i go about ensuring security? how do I ensure that the symmetric key is the same both on the SQL standard and SQL mobile?
I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:
SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.
I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.
Hi everyone,I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced Services from Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition. I have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition but it took up so much space and resources on my computer that I didn't want to put it back on there. So I put the SQL Express on there and while the Management Studio application connects just fine, VS 2005 will not. Oddly enough, VS 2005 connected just fine to SQL 2005 Standard. I have enabled shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP. I have set up SQL Express to accept remote connections on named pipes and TCP/IP. And I have tried running SQL Express as the Local System Account, as a Local Service and as a Network Service. Nothing. I have tried feeding the Server Name is the Data Connections dialog in Visual Studio my SQL Express instance as (local)/SQLEXPRESS, localhost/SQLEXPRESS, and {computername}/SQLEXPRESS where {computername} is the name of my local computer which SQL Express is (allegedly) running on. And I cannot get the list of databases on that server. There is probably something very simple that I have left out. Can anyone see what it is?Thanks!
Hello,If I backup and restore an express database to sql server 2005 standard, will there still be limitations in regards to the database size, cpu...etc.? Thanks,Jon
I need to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on a new Windows Server 2003 machine that has SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed by a backup application (Backup Exec). Will I need to uninstall the express edition in order to install the standard edition? Can the two coexist as separate instances or will the standard edition installation simply upgrade the express installation?
Hi, I am not using Express 2005 on my production server, rather I'm using SQL Server 2005 standard edition. So I have my site working perfectly on the development server, but once I publish it, the builtin aspnetdb that I use for logging in and such doesn't work. I have another database my app uses and it works fine once I changed the connection string. So I think I just need to change the connection string all the fancy new login controls use. But I can't figure out how to do that. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
