Can't Open .sdf DB On Emulator (Pocket PC)

Mar 28, 2008

Hi,

I'm a developer of VB.NET mobile applications at work. We have used Access in the past, and manually pushed flat files to and from the scanner. We are now exploring SQL CE.

Trouble is, I am having a difficult time figuring out how to open SQL CE databases on the Pocket PC emulator. I've worked more on the middleware programs in the past - and have just dealt with ADO.NET connection strings - not the actual development on the scanner itself.

I am try to figure out how to actually connect to SQL Server CE on the Pocket PC 2003 SE emulator.

When I deploy the application on the emulator, it installs SQL Server CE onto the emulator. However, I'm not sure how to install the sample database (starting off with Northwind.sdf for testing purposes) onto the emulator. I'm also not positive the connection string is correct - as it seems to be different than typical ADO.NET.

Here's my code (for connecting to the database) so far.

Code Snippet

Public Class SampleInventorySystem

Private _conn As SqlCeConnection
Public Sub New()

' This call is required by the Windows Form Designer.
InitializeComponent()

_conn = New SqlCeConnection("Data Source = .Northwind.sdf") 'This is one of 'many connection strings I've tried

End Sub
Private Sub SampleInventorySystem_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

Dim cmd As New SqlCeCommand()

cmd.Connection = _conn
cmd.CommandText = "SELECT [Employee ID], [Last Name], [First Name], Photo FROM Employees"

Try

_conn.Open()
Catch ex As Exception
MessageBox.Show("Error opening database", "Error")
End Try

End Sub

End Class
When I deploy the application, the Try Catch block catches the error "Error Opening Database". I've also tried putting the full path for the connection string. Is there a folder which I should directly put the .sdf file into the emulator - similar to the folder directory of the scanner? (i.e. Storage Card/...)

Thanks for your help!

HELP: SqlCeConnection Path Error In .NET Compact Framework (Pocket PC Emulator)

Apr 4, 2007

Hi all,

I am trying to access my SQL Server database through SqlCeConnection:

cecon = new SqlCeConnection("Data Source=D:\D_Drive\csharppract\nddbpda\nddbpda\nddbpdadatabase.sdf");

cecon.Open();

I am getting the following error:

System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException was unhandled

When I tried to get the path from which the database file is being accepted, I got a different path:

string path;

path = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(

System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetName().CodeBase);

MessageBox.Show(path);

This code gives me this path:

Program Filesddbpda

Then I changed the path in my connection string to this:

cecon = new SqlCeConnection("Data Source=\Program Files\nddbpda\nddbpdadatabase.sdf");

cecon.Open();

When I ran my application it worked (virtually), but the database is not getting updated (for obvious reasons).

What should I do now to correct this?

Thanks in advance.

SQL/CLR Debugging Hangs On Visual Studio 2003 And SQL 2005

Feb 5, 2008

I am unable to debug code from a SQL Database Project using the CLR. After VS 2005 does the auto-attaching to the SQL server, VS hangs until I tell it to stop debugging. Many others have reported this as a similar problem, however this only seems to affect me when I€™m connecting to specific servers. Specifically it seems to be remote connections. When I attempt to connect to my SQL 2005 Developer Edition €œlocally€? I get right through and can debug.
From my VS output window:

Auto-attach to process '[1688] [SQL] gx620-eric' on machine 'gx620-eric' succeeded.

Debugging script from project script file.

testing

No rows affected.

(0 row(s) returned)

Finished running sp_executesql.

The thread 'gx620-eric [59]' (0x1730) has exited with code 0 (0x0).

The thread 'gx620-eric [59]' (0x1730) has exited with code 0 (0x0).

The program '[1688] [SQL] gx620-eric: gx620-eric' has exited with code 0 (0x0).

When I attempt to connect to a remote server running Enterprise Edition, it hangs after a successful attach.

Auto-attach to process '[1856] [SQL] virtual2003eric' on machine 'virtual2003eric' succeeded.

Sometimes after countless attempts, I am able to get this to work, but lately I have had no success. As far as the SQL Server side, enabling and disabling the CLR through the Surface Area Configuration seems to be the only place to do anything relative to the CLR inside SQL server.

I have firewalls disabled. All SQL Servers presently have both SQL 2005 SP2 and Visual Studio 2005 SP1 installed.

I€™ve tried restarting servers and services, checking and un-checking €œAllow SQL/CLR Debugging€? and those steps did not work for me.

Does anyone have any insight on this one? Any ideas on how I can further debug this one?

Thanks.

Eric

When Debugging, Do You Have To Shut Down And Restart BIDS Every Time You Rebuild The Custom Component That You're Debugging?

Jul 9, 2006

Hi,

I have found that when I'm debugging a custom component in BIDS that I've created in another instance of Visual Studio, every time I rebuild the component I have to shutdown and restart BIDS and then reattach to the BIDS process. Which is pretty time consuming... And if I find a small error in my custom component when debugging then I don't seem to be allowed to make any changes to the code unless I stop debugging and go through the process above.

Am I missing something here? Or do I really have to manually go through these steps every time I want to change code in the component I'm debugging?

Can I automate the process with MSBuild or NAnt? If so, is there an example of this anywhere?

Thanks in advance,

Lawrie.

INSERT Not Working Via Emulator SmartPhone WM 5.0

Apr 8, 2006

It would be great to get some feedback on this, I've wasted nearly the whole day trying to figure it out.

I've created a simple test database called test.sdf. It contains a few tables but no data. My plan is to populate the database programatically; however, the INSERT command does not seem to be working correctly. I can see that the data actually gets added to the database when I add it and iterate over it programatically (using SqlCeCommands), but after the program completes and I look at the Table in "Server Explorer" via VS 2005, the data is no longer there!

Now note that the location of the sdf is in the Emulator's "shared folder." I have read from other posts (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=173589&SiteID=1) that you cannot create a database on emulated "storage card" with PPC 2005 emulators but I've read nothing about modifying a database which exists there. Unfortunately I do not currently have access to a "real" device so I can't test this in any other way.

Here's the test function:

public void Test()

{

SqlCeConnection conn = null;

try

{

conn = new SqlCeConnection();

conn.ConnectionString = @"Data Source = Storage Card est.sdf";

conn.Open();

SqlCeCommand cmd1 = conn.CreateCommand();

cmd1.CommandText = "INSERT INTO Customers VALUES ('Joe Schmoe')";

int n = cmd1.ExecuteNonQuery();

cmd1.CommandText = "INSERT INTO Customers VALUES ('Alice Wonderland')";

n = cmd1.ExecuteNonQuery();

SqlCeCommand cmd2 = conn.CreateCommand();

cmd2.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM Customers";

SqlCeDataReader rdr = cmd2.ExecuteReader();

//this correctly prints out Joe Schmoe and Alice Wonderland

while (rdr.Read())

{

String str = rdr.GetString(0);

Console.WriteLine(str);

}

rdr.Close();

}

finally

{

conn.Close();

}

}

After running this test function, I open the Customers table in VS2005 and no Customer rows exist despite the fact that the SqlCeDataReader correctly iterated through the previously added 2 customers.

Out Of Process SP Invoke

Dec 25, 2007

Team:

How to invoke a stored procedure "out of process", meaning i want to add it to a queue.

Reason: we have a proc that is fired real-time each time an order comes into the system and it take a few seconds and when there is plenty of order activity in the system, the process times out. I would like to essentially add this to a queue and move on and some other process will process from the queue. Is CLR call the way to do? I know that the easiest way can be to add to a table and process from the table every 5 mins or something like that. Thoughts?

Thx

Wrong Version Of SQL Server Mobile Deployed To Emulator?

Feb 2, 2006

I am developing a mobile application with Visual Studio 2005 RTM. I created a .SDF database from scratch within the Server Explorer window. Based on the properties of the database, this is a version 3.0 DB. I then deploy the application to the Pocket PC 2003 SE Emulator and I receive an error when trying to open the database from my app. It's a very generic error:

System.SData.SqlServerCE.SqlCEException

I trap the error in my code, but there is no message in the exception object.

If I try to open it with Query Analyzer on the device, I get an error stating "The file is not a valid database file". It appears that SQL CE 2.0 was deployed to the emulator.

I noticed that when I add a reference in my project to the System.Data.SQLServerCE namespace, it defaults to this DLL:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8SmartDevicesSDKSQL ServerMobilev2.0System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll

I tried removing that and manually adding a reference by browsing to this 3.0 DLL:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8SmartDevicesSDKSQL ServerMobilev3.0System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll

I then receive the following build error:

Unable to load referenced library 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8SmartDevicesSDKSQL ServerMobilev3.0System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll': Version 2.0 is not a compatible version.

If I build the database in my application from scratch from within my code, everything works fine, which I believe is because it is a 2.0 database that is generated.

To make a long story short:

How do I get my project to reference the 3.0 SQL Server CE namespace and deploy it to the emulator?

Reference To Data.System.SqlServerCe In VS2005 Does Not Install CE 2.0 To Emulator/PDA

Feb 3, 2006

We have a Compact Framework 1.1 application that uses Sql Server CE 2.0. In VS2003, a reference to System.Data.SqlServerCe causes the Sql Server CE dlls and Query Analyzer to install to the Emulator or PDA.

I am currently converting the application to Compact Framework 2.0, but we are not upgrading to Sql Server Mobile (yet). However, the reference to System.Data.SqlServerCe, in VS 2005, no longer causes Sql Server CE to install to the PDA/Emulator.

There is a difference in the build outputs between VS2003 & VS2005. In 2003, System_SR_enu.cab, sqlce.wce4.x86.cab & sqlce.dev.wce4.x86.cab are copied & lanuched. In 2005, only System_SR_enu.cab is copied... no launch.

Any ideas? Reinstall VS2005?

How To Invoke Insert Stored Procedure

Apr 3, 2007

Feeling really dumb tonight - below is my stored procedure and code behind which completes (it puts "completed" in TextBox4) but does not insert anything into database.
Questions:1) do in need to include the primary key field in the insert stored procedure?2) do I need a DataAdapter to actually get it running and open and close the connection? STORED PROCEDURE running on SQL 2000 server: ______________________________________
CREATE PROCEDURE newuser003.InsertCompanyInfo
@CS_CompanyName nchar(100),@CS_City nchar(500),@CS_Phone varchar(20)
AS
INSERT into tblCompanyInfo_Submit(CS_CompanyName, CS_City, CS_Phone)VALUES ('@CS_CompanyName', '@CS_City', '@CS_Phone')RETURN
C# CODE BEHIND: ______________________________________________________
public partial class ContractorSubmision : System.Web.UI.Page{    protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)    {       }    protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["localhomeexpoConnectionString2"].ConnectionString);        SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("CompanyInfoSubmit", con);        cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;        cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@CS_CompanyName", TextBox1.Text);        cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@CS_City", TextBox2.Text);        cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@CS_Phone", TextBox3.Text);        TextBox4.Text = "Completed";    }}

Why Does SqlCeConnection.Dispose() Invoke GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers()?

Jan 30, 2008

I've got an application uses a WPF GUI, is built in VS2008 final, targets .Net Framework 3.5, and uses a Sql Ce 3.5 database for local storage. After a specific WPF window is rebound the application hangs. Hitting pause on the debugger reveals the offending method is a call to SqlCeConnection.Dispose(). Via Reflector I can see this method calls SqlCeConnection+ObjectLifeTimeTracker.Close() which in turn calls GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers(). Within WPF there are some objects (specifically TextBox) which need to have their resources freed on the main application thread. The finalizer thread is waiting on the main application thread, which is in turn waiting on the finalizer thread, resulting in a deadlock.

You can see some additional discussion of the topic including our temporary resolution in this thread.

My question is why is there a call to GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers() buried within the SqlCeConnection.Dispose() call tree?
