Cannot Create New Sql Express Database

Jun 27, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to create a new Sql Express Database (.mdf file) from inside Visual Studio 2005. I did the following:

1) Created a Database Project in Visual Studio.

2) Choose Data Source to be Microsoft SQL Server Database File

3) Browse to a directory and enter a file name for the new database, say abc.mdf

4) When I click OK, Visual Studio prompts me if I want to create the database file, I click yes.

5) After a while, I get this error message:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

Then I opened SQL Server Configuration Manager, and I enabled Named Pipes and TCP/IP for both SQLEXPRESS and MSSQLSERVER. It prompts me that the settings will not change until the service is re-started.

When I go to Administrative Tools -> Services, I see that SQLServer (MSSQLSERVER) is started, and SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) is stopped. I can stop the MSSQLSERVER service. But when I tried to start SQLEXPRESS service, I get the following error message:

Windows could not start the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Lo9g. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 17058.

I have Visual Stuio 2005 and Sql Server 2005 Installed on my machine, and I believe I am logged on using an administrator account.

Can someone help me to figure out what's wrong please?

Thanks and regards,

Alice

SQL Server Express - Cannot Create Database

Mar 1, 2007

Using Visual Web Designer 2005 Express and SQL Server Express 2005 I am not able to create a "working" SQL database.  I am able to use the NORTHWIND.MDF and other tutorial .mdf files without any problems.  I am presently using an MS Access database without any problems.  I was able to use the upsize wizard in Access to create a SQL database (which isn't recognized by VWD).  I have downloaded the SQL Server Management Studio Express.  OK, I think I'm ready to go.  When I attempt to create a new SQL database through VWD 2005 I receive an error "Connections to SQL Server files (.mdf) require SQL Server 2005 Express to be working properly.  Please verify the installation of the component..."  I reinstalled the software, but get the same message.What am I missing please?

Error - Express Create Database For Attach

Apr 3, 2007

Hi Guys,This is my first post and I hope I'm not going to embarrass myself to much.I am currently writing a pseudo install package for SQL Server Express, it is written in VB.Net 2.0.

I have created an *.exe that fires the SQL Server Express install package silently with command line options, once complete the *.exe copies an *.MDF and an *.LDF to the newly created data directory. Once the data has been copied I fire a "CREATE DATABASE FOR ATTACH" using a SQLClient.SQLCommand to attach my DB. I am using Windows Authentication for SQL Server Express.This all works beautifully when the *.exe is being run from a local hard disk - complete success.When I move the *.exe to a CD it fails . SQL Server is installed correctly, the files are copied to the local hard disk in the correct location. I then fire the "CREATE DATABASE" command - its here I get the error.The error details are:Unable to open the physical file "c:....Exchange.LDF". Operating System error 5:"5(error not found)". Cannot create file "c:....Exchnage.ldf" because it already exists. Change the file path or file name, and retry the operation. Could not open new database 'Exchange'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. File activation failure. The physical file name "c:....Exchange.LDF" may be incorrect.Remember this works perfectly when run from the local hard disk, this only occurs when running from a CD-ROM.Now from the research I have done I believe it may be a permissions error. The setup *.exe is being run from a Administrator account and the SQL Server DB Engine Service Account is System. I'm under the impression that this should provide more than enough permissions.

Thanks for any help you guys may be able to provide...
Matt.

Sqlcmd On SQL EXPRESS: Access Denied During CREATE DATABASE Command

Scenario:

I have installed SQL Express 2005 and I want to create a new DB using sqlcmd.

I am running a command like: sqlcmd -i file.ini (I am logged like Administrator of PC)

the content of the file.ini is:

SET @data_path = 'c:Program FilesMyTestdatabase'

-- execute the CREATE DATABASE statement
EXECUTE ('CREATE DATABASE DataCollection ON
( NAME = DC_dat,
FILENAME = '''+ @data_path + 'DC.mdf'',
SIZE = 10,
MAXSIZE = 50,
FILEGROWTH = 5 )
LOG ON
( NAME = DC_log,
FILENAME = '''+ @data_path + 'DClog.ldf'',
SIZE = 5MB,
MAXSIZE = 25MB,
FILEGROWTH = 5MB )'
) ;
GO

I obtain this error:

Msg 1802, Level 16, State 4, Server TESTQ5SQLEXPRESS, Line 1
CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.
Msg 5123, Level 16, State 1, Server TESTQ5SQLEXPRESS, Line 1
CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5(Access is denied.) while attempting to open or create the physical file 'c:Program FilesMyTestdatabaseDC.mdf'.

If I change the security of directory database (I add "modify" permission to Users windows group) the error disappear.

I am logged like Administrator... why is it necessary to change directory permission?

Unattended Re-install Of SQL Server 2005 Express Fails To Re-create Database!

May 2, 2008

Hi,

I have a script that performs an unattended installation of SQL Server and works fine.

However, if I un-install via the control panel all the files are removed apart from the databases that are created by me when SQl server was installed. This is good and ensures data is not deleted.

The files left over are in the following directory:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData
and contains:
MyDatabase.mdf
MyDatabase_log.LDF

The problem I have is after performing the re-installtion of SQL server (unattended) I am unable to create a new database with the same name (in this instance called "myDatabase").

The actual files are physically there so this is the reason a new database with the same name cannot be creacted.

Again this is ok again because it ensures I cannot overwrite existing data. However I am unable to re-attach this database to SQl server so I can continue to use it!

The question is:

How do I make this database usable again after an unattended install? Is there a parameter I am missing?

Below are the commands I use that are passed to the installation of SQL Server as command line parameters:

#define SQL_SILENT "-q /passive /norebootchk /qn reboot=ReallySuppress"
#define SQL_USERNAME "username=MyUserName"
#define SQL_COMPANYNAME "companyname=MyCompanyName"
#define SQL_ADDLOCAL "addlocal=ALL"
#define SQL_DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS "disablenetworkprotocols=0"
#define SQL_INSTANCENAME "instancename=MSSQLSERVER"
#define SQL_SQLAUTOSTART "SQLAUTOSTART=1"
#define SQL_SECURITYMODE "SECURITYMODE=SQL"
#define SQL_SAPWD "SAPWD=#Password#"
#define SQL_SAVESYSDB "1"
#define SQL_USESYSDB ""
#define SQL_INSTALLSQLDIR ""
#define SQL_INSTALLDATADIR ""

#define SQL_PARAMETERS SQL_SILENT + " " + SQL_USERNAME + " " + SQL_COMPANYNAME + " " + SQL_ADDLOCAL + " " + SQL_DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS + " " + SQL_INSTANCENAME + " " + SQL_USESYSDB + " " + SQL_INSTALLSQLDIR + " " + SQL_INSTALLDATADIR + " " + SQL_SAVESYSDB + " " + SQL_SQLAUTOSTART + " " + SQL_SECURITYMODE + " " + SQL_SAPWD

The last four commands I have played around with but for some reason SQL Server service will not start when these are used! (This is a different issue though!).

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Paul

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???

Apr 16, 2007

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
 Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
 When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
 Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Database Connection: Mapped Network Drive (VC++ Express, MSSQL SMS Express, XP)

Sep 8, 2007

Hi

I have VC++ express and MSSQL SMS express and have an application working nicely locally. The Data explorer and data connections part works really easily.

Now, I want to make the application available to my home network.

I mapped the drive where the database is and called it Z: so I could put my "release" on my other network PC and assumed it would find Z: if I mapped the shared network drive on that machine and called it Z:

But: I can't even add the mapped connection on the local machine, I get:

The file "Z:databasescalorie.mdf" is on a network path not supported for database files. An attempt to attach.....etc"

It works fine on the original F drive.......

Am I approaching this the wrong way. How should I distribute to network PCs?

thanks hopefully

Deploying Multi-user Sql Express Database To SQL Express Server

Jul 10, 2007

Okay, I've read massive topics on ClickOnce, and embedded database applications, etc, etc.

I need a handful of good suggestions how I can create a deployment package, to get my sql express database onto a SQL Express server.

The database will need to be multi-user, because I am also developing a WinForms application to connect to the SQL Express database.

I'm thinking I need to use some automated scripting features, to generate scripts for the database once I am done (unless you have a better suggestion).

After that, I need to know what to do with those scripts, and how can I create a setup / deployment packages to run those scripts against a SQL Express server.

The other alterntative obviously is to copy my sql express database, and run an attach command. This will work the first time, only because this will have been the first deployment of this database.

Please keep in mind when answering this question, that I will not be embedding the database, and as far as I understand ClickOnce is a feature for use with embedded databases or user instance databases (not sure).

I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. Does anyone know what the solution might be?
