SQL Server 2008 :: Changing Collation Of Instance

Sep 15, 2015

Is it possible to change the collation of your instance?

As far as I know it is not possible to change the collation once SQL Server has been installed.

When I said that SQL needs to be reinstalled at work the guys sent me this link: [URL]....

I ran it exactly like that but the collation didn't change.

I have also restarted the services but the collation is still the same.

Am I running this code wrong or am I right about not being able to change the collation after installation?

SQL Server 2005: Changing Latin1_General_BIN Collation To Latin1_General_CI_AS Collation

May 1, 2007

Hello,

I've restored a SQL Server 2000 database with a Latin1_General_BIN collation from a .dmp file to a SQL Server 2005 server with a default collation of SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. When I try to change the database collation I get hundreds of the following error:

The object 'CK_PM10200_GLPOSTD_00AF8CF' is dependent on database collation. So, in this case, is it even possible to change the collation if there are objects in the database that are dependent on it?

Thanks,

Bruce

Cannot Resolve The Collation Conflict Between SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS And Latin1_General_CI_AS In The Equal To Operatio

May 20, 2008

I hit this error when I tried to do something like:

Code Snippet
create table #tempTable (ID int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL ,
column1 varchar(200) NOT NULL)
INSERT INTO #tempTable
Values('test')
create table tempTable (ID int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL ,
column2 varchar(200) NOT NULL)
INSERT INTO tempTable
Values('test')
Select * from #tempTable t
inner join tempTable p
on t.ID = p.ID
where t.column1 = p.column2

After a thorough search on sysobjects and syscolumns, I found the collation problem on database "temp" is set to "Latin1_General_CI_AS"

since it's an system db, I cannot alter. My db also cannot alter because some SP is encrypted, though I cna de-crypt it.
Is that anyway to solve it by running the script??

I tried to do something like:
start /wait setup.exe /qb INSTANCENAME= {my MSSQL 2005 insatnce name} REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=SAPWD= {my sa password} SQLCOLLATION=SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI

but i get no error at Summamry.txt:
Setup succeeded with the installation, inspect the log file completely for status on all the components.

while at "SQLSetup0011__Core.log":

Error: Action "LaunchPatchedBootstrapAction" threw an exception during execution. Error information reported during run:
"C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup Bootstrapsetup.exe" finished and returned: 0

Anyone have any idea?

Connection String For Default Instance Of SQL Server 2005, On A Box Also Running A Named Instance Of SQL Server 2000

Nov 15, 2007

The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server.
There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
 I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However,  I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.

Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated
Thanks...

Cannot Connect To A Named Instance Of SQL 2000 Or 2005

Jan 20, 2006

Hi,
I am struggling connection to a named instance of SQL 2000 (SP4) from another machine but without any success. I get an error message saying that the server does not exist or access is denied.

The security configuration in this named instance is the same as the default instance (also 2000) and the remote machine can connect to it successfully.

I also configured the aliases in Client Network Utility in the client machine and set the server (machine) name and the port number used by the instance - but no help.

I use osql and Query Analyzer to connect to it, but I cannot connect by any of them.

Connecting locally, in the machine where the instance is installed, is successful.

The same behaviour appears when I try to connect to another instance on the machine which is 2005.
Something with the named instance is problematic.

Any help?

Sql Server 2005 Named Instance Dsn Entry Using A .bat File

Mar 6, 2007

Several applications in out environment use Microsoft access to access the SQL server databases. Our new SQL Server 2005 instance is a named instance. We would like to create a .reg file to update the individual workstations as part of the migration. For some reason the .reg file with a named instance does not work. If the entry is created through the GUI it works. The server drop down does not show the named instance, only the server name but if you type the servernameamed_instance it finds it ok. Your Account information could not be verified for one or more instances. Ensure that you can connect to all the selected instances using the account information provided. To process further deselect the instances to which connectivity cannot be established.

However, I would login to SQL 2005 named instance, either NT or SQL login 'sa' without any problems to do anything I want because both are sysadmin.

Named SQL 2005 Instance Multiple Active Recordsets-C# Stored Procedure-Connection String

May 7, 2008

I am working on a C# stored procedure for SQL 2005, and i've uncovered a couple questions.

First a description of the procedure:

I have a series of equations taking place to calculate a score based on activities in which the user participated in, that will give them an over all grade or rating. The calculations currently take place in the database, and I am moving this from T-SQL to C# CRL.

1. In order to connect the stored procedure to the database I use a SqlConnection and a SqlCommand to execute either dynamic sql or a stored procedure to return data to a data reader. Is there an easier way to connect to the database? In SSMS if i open up the query it knows what database i am connected to. Do I have to make a sql connection in C# stored Procedures?

2. I have multiple functions within the main C# Stored Procedure that I'm working on. This ends up requiring Multiple Active Recordsets. I must set this withing the connection string. Seeing as I'm using a named instance of SQL 2005, I now must put the userid, password, and server name into the code. Is there a more secure way to connect to SQL Server in a C# Stored procedure that allows MARS?

3. I encryped the connection string, and put it into the assembly, I wrote a decryption class, and in the procedure itself everytime I need to refrence the connection string, I call it, decrypt it, and pass it along. But my code to decrypt the connection string is in the compiled DLL, if the server was ever compromised the encrypted connection string and the key to decrypt it are sitting in the DLL. Is there a config file that I can use for C# Stored Procedures?

4. If I have to keep the connection string in the file, then I need to change that per environment. Example I have 3 test environments before production. So I would need to change the connection string for each file. That may be fine for one procedure, but what if I have 20, that will quickly get of hand?

5. Along the security lines, can the assembly for a C# Stored Procedure be called from outside the assembly? From a command prompt, or by a maliceous program? Or could it be called directly by a .NET application instead of going through a T-SQL Stored Procedure that is using
WITH EXECUTE AS CALLER
AS
EXTERNAL NAME [PROJECTNAME].[CLASSNAME].[METHODNAME]

Thanks

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Cannot Connect To Named Instance (2nd Instance) From Local SSMS

SQL 2012 :: Clustered SSAS Unable To Connect To Named Instance (instance Not Found On Server)

Mar 20, 2014

I have a 3 node cluster on which I have installed SSAS as it's own insntance. I have created this as a named instance and can connect to it by serverinstance if I'm on the server itself. However from my desktop I get the error saying instance was not found on server name.

I have defined an alternate port and setup firewall rules and can connect via server:port but not serverinstance. Prior to making this change SSAS was running on default port of 2383 and I could connect just by servername.

I have read many articles for previous versions saying that clustered SSAS will always use 2383 and that you must connect just using servername. However and this is were it gets strange. I have a 2 node UAT cluster with SSAS setup exactly the same way I've described above and I can connect from my desktop as serverinstance.

Should I be able to connect as serverinstances for a named clustered instance in 2012 ?

Migrating From SQL2K Named Instance To SQL2K5 Default Instance

Feb 19, 2007

Hi, I have a task in hand to migrate (upgrade) from SQL2K named instance to SQL2K5 default instance. There are many intranet applications touching current SQL2K. I would like to perform this upgrade such that I don't have to touch any application code - meaning I don't have to change the connectionstring to point to new Default instance. How can I achieve this?

So, in otherwords, here is what I want to achieve:

Current Server: SQL2K: SERVER_AINSTANCE_A (named instance)

Upgraded Server: SQL2K5: SERVERB (default instance)

If I have both default, I could achive this by setting up DNS alias after migration done so that any call for SERVER_A would point to SERVER_B. But in my case, I don't have SERVER_A, I have named instance. Is there any solution?

Regards,

Vipul

The setup always completes and I am able to register the Named Instance of the SQL Server with which it was installed on. However, when I try to connect the users to the database, with both windows and SQL authentication, I receive a SQL server not found error. I have tried an alias setup as well as physically specifying the port number in settup up an ODBC connection.
Has anyone ran into similar problems?
Also, has anyone been able to successfully complete the process as mentioned above?

SQL Server 2005 Named Instance Through An ISA Server 2004

Jun 25, 2007

Hi, I'm trying to publish an SQL Server Instance through an ISA Server but I'm not being able. I tried to create the rules to allow the SQL protocols and to tunnel the calls from internet into my SQL server. I set the instance to connect through a fix port so it wouldn't worry about not being the default instance and configured that port in the ISA server so the remote calls were channeled into it. I'm allowing only TCP connections.
I must be pretty wrong on something because it doesn't work.
Can someone offer me a white paper or some step by step instructions to do this?
 Thanks a lot.

Changing Collation Of Server

I need to change the default collation of all dbs on all my servers to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI from SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. We need to do compares and sorts and want to ignore accents -- something that wasn't clear when we built the servers. I know this has to do with "re-building databases" -- maybe even including the master -- but I'm not certain exactly what this means. Thanks!

Changing SQL Collation On Database

Jan 11, 2008

Hi there,

We currently install some of client's databases on SQL Server 2000 with the collation set to Latin1_General_BIN but we have one client that was installed and now running on SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and I was wondering if we can change the collation on the database to Latin1_General_BIN?

Would this have any adverse affects on the DB or the data within it? Our strings are nvarchar.

Changing MSDB Collation

Mar 25, 2004

I support an applicatoin where the vendor requires the use of the LATIN_1_GENERAL_BIN sort collation in their user databases. Origionally, when I installed the instance, I did not select this sort collation for the instance. I have since gone back and reinstalled SQL Server with the correct sort collation. After that, I restored the vendors databases from backups I took prior to reinstalling the instnace and they retained the LATIN_1_GENERAL_BIN collation (the correct one).

I also restored the MSDB database to get all of my jobs back. When I did this, MSDB took the old sort collation (SQL_LATIN_1_GENERAL_CPI_CI_AS). MSDB is the only database that has this collation and I'm getting errors in the agent log complaining of collation conflicts. I'm pretty sure the fact that the MSDB sort collation is different that all the other databases is the thing that's causing these error messages.

My question is this: Is there any way to change the sort collation of MSDB without reinstalling SQL server? This is a clustered environment and everytime I've reloaded SQL, it's been cumbersome and taken me at least 1 day's work.

Also, I know there's a rebuild master utility that will rebuild master, model and MSDB, but when I tried that last time it failed and I had to reinstall SQL anyway. Does anyone know of a way around this or have any tips on using the rebuildmaster utility in a clustered environment?

Many thanks,

"The Database could not be exclusively locked to perform the operation. ALTER DATABASE failed. The default collation of database 'nutri93' cannot be set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS."

I have tried SQL scripts that I have found to take the database into a single user mode but still get the same errror.

Usually its this Database nutri93 could not be locked exclusively

How I can change the collation type? Currently the only option seems to be a complete hard install of SQL Management Studio

Changing Database Collation Setting?

Mar 6, 2012

I currently have a server with the collation set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.

However, some of the databases within the server are set to Latin1_General_BIN, probably because they were restored from another server some time ago. Also, even within the databases that have Latin1_General_BIN, some of the columns are set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, very confusing to say the least.

What i would like to do is change the database collation settings for these databases to match the server setting. I would also like to change all of the tables within these databases to have the columns also set to the server collation settings.

I'm looking for the steps that i would need to take to make sure i don't mess anything up as these databases have there own sets of views and sp's that run each day.
