Changing The Data Files To Another Disk Partition

May 26, 2004

Hi,

I have a sql server 7 running on a machine with two disk partitions (D: and E:).

The data files xxx.mdf and xxx.ldf are stored in D:, which has very few space available. I want to copy these files to E: but I get an error saying that it is not possible to change the source file of a database. Is it possible to do it or do i have to create another data file in E: and keep the old one in D:?

Thanks in advance,

System Databases On Different Disk Partition

Aug 19, 2007

Hi all,

I'm having some performance-wise thoughts about my new sql-server 2005 installation ...
I have my SQL installed on one partition (the system dbs are also on that partition by default), my regular databases (non system dbs) are on different partition.

The question is - if my sys dbs are on different partition, could I experience some performance issues ?

One senario that I can think of is when the SQL looks for SPs starting with sp_ in the master DB, the disk will have to check a different partition. Perhaps such senario was solved using some kind of caching methods on the sql server itself.

Hope my thread is in the right forum.

Cheers everyone.

Changing Path Of Data && Log Files On The Fly

Dec 4, 2004

We have a SQL Server setup as a publisher to 15 subscribers. We need to change the path of the data & log files to a new drive (added a new harddisk). We plan to take a cold backup of the database and shift the data & log files to the new drive. Then we just attach the data & log files from the new path.

Will this disturb my existing replication Setup?
Is the the correct procedure for changing the path of the existing data & log files?
What is the appropriate method for shifting data & log file of a live database to a different location (directory/drive) ?

thanks in advance

Swapfile On Same Partition As Db Files

Jun 20, 2002

I have the pagefile.sys on the same partition (C:)as the database files. I been advised this is not a good idea. I'm getting paging. I'd like to move the swapfile to another partition on the same drive. Is that a good idea, or should I move it to another physical disk? And is it OK to leave the OS partition (C:) without any swapfile? Thanks!!

Files As BLOBS Or On Disk?

Dec 14, 2006

Hi

I wanted to ask a question in terms of design (Performance, scalability, maintenance, flexibility etc.) is it better to refernce a document on the actual file system (on a file server) i.e. from a database link to the actual file at a disk location
e.g. in the database have something like \fileserver2006 estewtext.txt or C: estewtext.txt

or is it better to store all the files in a database as blobs?

The Question i would like to ask is more in the context of desigining a document management system?

Multiple Database Files On The Same Disk

May 16, 2007

Hi there

It is obvious that putting multiple database files on different physical disk is better for performance, but what about splitting the data on different files on the same disk?

I have got a database of about 20GB and only a single data file. will I benefit from splitting this file to multiple files on the same disk?

Do I Save Disk Space Storing Images In Db Vs. Loose Files?

Jan 16, 2007

Hello --
I'm building an app that will allow users to create their own photo galleries.  At this point, I'm planning on storing all photos as byte arrays in SQL server image fields.
Besides the organizational benefit, is there a space benefit to doing this?  That is, if I have 1MB of .jpg's, will those same images take up less than 1MB of file space within the database?
One of the reasons I ask is that most hosting plans out there seem to offer more "normal" disk space than is allocated for the database, so I'm trying to make a best plan to accommodate what will probably end up being the biggest disk space consumer in my app (the photos, that is).
Any other recommendations re: this scenario (hosting, best practices) are appreciated.
TIA,
Eric

1. When I right click on FileTable, and say Explore File Table Directory, I was taken to a directory. But if I search the same directory in my server/machine, the directory is not available.

2. Can I use some external server/disk as a directory for FileTable?

3. How easy is to use FileTables using .Net web applications?

Partition Data/Views?

Jul 17, 2001

Hi folks,

Recently i've been working on a new project that would partition a large table 2 smaller tables. I then create a view to union the 2 smaller tables(table A, B). I've been getting a strange error when i try to update, insert, delete a record through the view. "View needs partitioning column"....i find this strange. Both of my table have a cluster primary key consisting of 3 columns, and one of the 3 columns(date field) consist of a check constraint. The constraint is used to determine what record goes into which table. Am i missing anything else? The really strange part is sometime it works, and sometimes i get the error message.

Any thoughts?

Joe R.

Find How Much Of Partition Filegroup Contains Data?

Oct 7, 2015

I have partitions that I have filled with data. I am not trying to figure out exactly how much data the partitions contain, and therefore I will be able to see if any of them are close to hitting their autogrow conditions. If I were looking at a single unpartitioned table, then I could maybe look at the table properties to determine data and index sizes, and compare that to the size of the mdf file size, but for partitions, then I am not sure how I would query this information out. Any pointers on how this information could be queried out of the system?

Should The Quorum Disk Be A Physical Disk Or Majority Node Set?

Nov 15, 2006

Hello,

I am trying to setup a test cluster and am having an issue. When I try to create the resource of a physical disk it takes both the drive e: and drive q: and doesn't seperate them into two physical disks as resources. This means when I try to associate the quorum disk it links the to physcial disk resource of drive e and q. Then when I try to install SQL2k5 I get the warning about installing SQL on the quorum disk. Am I missing something? Is there a way to seperate e and q onto two physical disk resources so I can specifically associate the quorum to q and the sql to e or should I be setting the quorum disk to a majority node set? Thanks in advance.

John

Transact SQL :: Fast Data Loading With Partition Switching Strategy

Jul 28, 2015

I’m looking for clearity on partition switching. The idea is to use many BULK INSERT statements into table dbo.X_n in parallel and when BULK INSERT for table dbo.X_n is completed, switch dbo.X_n into dbo.bigdaddy. I think this is the fastest way to upload a couple hundred GB of data.

In learning about partition switching (in part) from The Data Loading Performance Guide under Partition SWITCH, I hear the instructions to say copy the main table exactly to become a target. But in that same step (#1), I read that we need to change the default file group of the target (dbo.X_n) from the default file group. Then it says I need to match indexes and lists the filegroup as something we need to match with the main table.

As an overview of the partition switching strategy, I think the whole point of BULK INSERT with partitioning is to have seperate files (in same group) to enable concurrent uploading where each table has its own file. Once the upload is completed to a table (dbo.X_n) then we do the partition switch into the main table (dbo.bigdaddy). The data we just uploaded doesn’t actually move, just the metadata for it.

When I read the instructions linked above, I hear “Don’t have the same filegroup on your target as the main table. You must have the same filegroup on your target as the main table.”

Where am I disconnected?

I proposed on a new server that we separate Data Files, Log Files, tempDB, Backups, etc. onto separate LUNS on a SAN with High Speed Solid State Drives.I was told that with the new technology with solid state SAN's that it would decrease performance and that it did not work the same way as it did when you had RAID 5's etc.I thought that if things were cared out correctly by a SAN Administrator they would know how to configure for optimal performance.
