Changing The Default Port On A Clustered 2005 Server.
Feb 7, 2007
I am unclear as to which Ip address to change the standard port on. When setting up a cluster you have multiple IP address's including the nic that is used for the heartbeat. I have not found any documention on how to change both nodes to listen on a port other than 1433..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm supporting a SQL 6.5 application through a firewall & I'm new to NT & SQLServer.
What's the easiest way to find out what port SQL is listening on? It should be 1433 but
the NT guys say 1433 isn't in use. What's the easiest way to change the default port? A search through Books online talks about editing registry keys & I'd prefer not to do this if this can be avoided. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hello,I have SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, and I'd like to change thedefault port to something else (we'll use 2033 for this example). I'vetried to connect from another computer on the same subnet using"ServerName:2033" as the server, but it doesn't connect. It will connect ifI change the Server to use the default port and change the server to connectto on the client to "ServerName", but either I"m not referencing the newport number properly or ????Any help you could provide would be great.Thanks In Advance!Rick

I installed a default SQL Server 2012 instance on Windows Server 2012.I enabled the SQL Browser and changed the TCP port of the instance to 1435. I changed port 1433 to 1435 I was able to connect to the instance using SSMS on another server. Now I have to enter Servername,1435 to make a connection.Why does the SQL Browser not resolve the servername to the right IP address and port 1435? Why am I not able to make a connection when I enter the servername or <servername>MSSQLSERVER? Is a SQL Browser only resolving named instances?This works fine for a named instance. Is there something special about default instances or the SQL Browser?

I am unable to access the default port 1433 on my SQL 2003 server. There is no firewall. I run telnet <ip> <port> and get "Connection failed" which explains my inability to connect to the server for weeks. I have being unable to connect to the server after I uninstalled sql 2000 and reinstalled it on my 2003 server. Some of the things I have checked is Network Configuration in EM. Named Pipes and TCP/IP is installed with port set to 1433. HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftMSSQLServerClientSuperSocketNetLibTcpDefaultPort port is set to 1433. Is there anything I need to configure on the server side to have the default sql server port enabled.
Thanks

After reading some comments here I decided to look at tables to see if any had a clustered index that was a unique identifier. Yep. So if I have a table with a unique identifier as the primary key/clustered index and an identity column that is indexed, I would like to make the identity a clustered index (maybe even the primary key) and make the unique identifier a unique non-clustered index (not the primary key).
Does this sound reasonable?If I do this will I need to drop and recreate the other indexes? Or maybe just rebuild the other indexes?
Currently:
CREATE TABLE Payments (
IDX INT IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
GUID UNIQUEIDENTIFIER NOT NULL DEFAULT(NEWID()),
.....
-- many other columns
);
GO
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[PAYMENTS] ADD CONSTRAINT [PK_PAYMENTS_GID] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([GUID] ASC);
GO
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_Payments_ID] ON [dbo].[PAYMENTS] ([IDX] ASC);
GO
Would like:
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[PAYMENTS] ADD CONSTRAINT [PK_PAYMENTS_IDX] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (IDX ASC);
GO
CREATE UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_Payments_GUID] ON [dbo].[PAYMENTS] (GUID ASC);
GO

We have 2 clustered SQL instances (2 physical servers in each cluster). Instance2 needs to be setup as a linked server on Instance1.
At this time port 1433 between them is not open. I am referring to the port on the network switch, not in the Windows Firewall (ports in Windows Firewall are already open).
Is opening the port between virtual IP-s sufficient? Or does port need to be open between all physical source/destination IP-s as well?

Having problems running the BPA for 2012. We setup using a clustered environment, SQL Server installed using default instance, and a static port not 1433. When I try to run the BPA using the instance name it says it doesn't exist, and won't let me add a port number. However, if I use MSSQLSERVER as the instance name it runs with no port specified and returns results. I assume that it doesn't require a port because the default instance would pull from the Browser Service and the using MSSQLSERVER is the same as running the default on a standalone server. Are those assumptions correct?

Is any one know of a way of changing the clustered index without creating in the middle the default clustered index
we have a big table that we use to switch the clustered index
whenever we change the clustered index we cannot change it directly we have
to drop the existing than the default clustered is built
and than we can built the new one - since it is a big table the process
takes a lot of time and I wonder if we can do it directly from one cluster
index to another
What we do not is running the following SQL:
-- remove the old index
drop index Tbl.I_oldId
GO
-- now create the newId as clustered
CREATE CLUSTERED
INDEX [I_newId] ON Tbl ([newId])
ON [PRIMARY]
GO
Any Idea ?
Thanks

I know the ..Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLLOGErrorLog on the server contains the information. But that needs I to RDP to the server or open the file remotely. Is there any other way to find out the port from my SSMS connection?
I remember in SQL Server 2000 you could find the information by choosing Properties of a connection in EM and click on the Network Configuration button. (I know it works when you are ON THE SERVER! But when I tried from my desktop, pressing the button didn't do anything)

I've run into a problem attempting to change my service account on the clustered servers from an administrative account to a non-privileged account under SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. When I change the login properties in Configuration Manager I get the following error:
"The user already belongs to this group"
I'm then prevented from making any changes to the service account. I don't know what I'm supposed to do at this point to resolve the problem, so any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I tried creating an alias to the server to get it to connect to analyze the server but it will not recognize the SQL 2000 server as a valid server to analyze. I can use the alias to connect in EM or SSMS. Any ideas? The server is not clustered and is at SP4. I've connected to several others in my environment but this one is causing me grief!

I would like to upgrade a production active/passive SQL Server 2000 cluster to SQL Server 2005.
I've read all of the documentation I could find, and doing an in-place upgrade seems to be the way to go. (Despite the fact it scares the hell out of me.
But throughout all the documentation, I've yet to see some simple and fairly important questions answered.
How does the process of upgrading SQL Server work when you're dealing with a cluster?
Do you upgrade one machine then the other? If so, do you upgrade the active node first, or the passive node?
What happens if you're forced to failover from one instance to the other before you've had a chance to upgrade both to 2005? In other words, you failover from 2005 to 2000. Would that even work?
What happens if your upgrades fails for some reason? Is it easy to rollback the installation? If not, will reinstalling SQL Server 2000 cause any issues? Will it remember the previous configuration and simply fix the broken install?
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

I am running into an issue trying to uninstall SQL Server 2005 64-bit. It hangs at the same point: Removing backup files. I then get a message that, "The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Completing Commit. The error is: The cluster resource cannot be moved to another group because other resources are dependent on it." The instance that I am trying to uninstall is in a cluster hosting two other SQL Server installations. I have tried a few combinations when attempting to uninstall: running the cluster group containing the server I am uninstalling on a different cluster node than all the other cluster groups; running them all on the same node. The only one I haven't tried is moving the Cluster Group containing the IP address of the cluster, cluster name, etc to another node while running the other groups on the other node. Has anyone run into this issue? Each of the nodes has been rebooted several times during these attempts and we are using Windows Server 2003 Clustering. Again, the hang happens at the same point every time. The exact error(s) from the even log are as follows:
Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) -- Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Completing Commit. The error is: The cluster resource cannot be moved to another group because other resources are dependent on it.
Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) -- Error 29530. Failed to set registry settings for server network libraries. The action is SetShilohRoot. The error is 2 (The system cannot find the file specified.
)

Hi, can anyone help me please - I'm still struggling with my database.
My set up is: Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005, SQL Express 2005, GoDaddy windows shared hosting.
On my PC I have a site which uses membership and the default database which was created after first compilation.
This works fine locally.
However, I need to export this to the GoDaddy server.
To do this I must rename the database (or recreate the project with a newly named database) and figure out how to alter any other settings.
I tried running aspnet_regsql.exe command but I really didn't have any luck.
I would have thought this would be a straight forward operation.
Can anyone give me guidance please.

Hi.
I thought I had this solved but after running aspnet_regiis again
I am having the same problem.
I can't log onto my sql server because the default DB is master.
The following command using sqlcmd gives me the master db:
Code:
SELECT *
FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES
WHERE TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE'
GO
So, to try to fix this i ran:
Code:
EXEC sp_defaultdb 'sa', 'my_default_db'
GO
and no luck. I went over to the DB server and checked
the permissions under SERVER/SQLEXPRESS > SECURITY > LOGINS. All except NTAuthority and Administrators have
my intended DB as the default (including ASPNET).
This is frustrating because I know I have figured it out
before but I can't remember what I did. Help appreciated.
Thanks.

However, no matter how much I wrangle with a script, Ican't find a reliable way to alter the column. What do I mean by this? - I want to be able to right-click on stored procedures in my object explorer, click New Stored Procedure, and be forced to use my new template, rather than Create Procedure (New Menu).SQL.

Hello,
Our security center just scanned my database server and has asked that I change the database server from the default instance name and change the default port used. When installed MS SQL Server 2000 I used the default installation settings. I have installed SP4 and this is all running on a fully patched WIN 2003 Server machine. Is this possible without un-installing and then re-installing?
Thanks for any and all help.

Best practice talks about the use of name conventions in the SSIS packages.
Is there a way to rename the default names of the tasks in the DataFlow and ControlFlow once and for all, so that each time I drag a new DataFlowTask in, the default name will be DFT and so on.
