Wild Card Character Search

Sep 19, 2007

Hi!

I am developing one web site, in that I can upload files to sql server, it will save the uploaded file in binary type and we can download the files from there. Upto this everything is working perfectly. But now my problem is - i have to implement the wildcard character search in this site. The file name and extension will save on the database in different columns, and one more thing is file name is unique. I confused to implement wildcard search in this site, where i can implement this type of search in database or in my application with c#? So please help me to do this. I dont know that this is the right place to post this question or not. If it is not right place, please guide me to where I can post this. If it is right place, please help me to implement wild card search.

Thanks in advance!

Wild Card Not Working In Search String

Jan 3, 2005

In the below section of code I'm connecing to a SQL database and when I use the "=" in the search it works ok, but when I try to add the ability to use wildcards by changin "=" to "LIKE" its not working

Working code:

Function GetName(ByVal first_Name As String) As System.Data.DataSet
Dim connectionString As String = "server='(local)'; trusted_connection=true; database='FamilyInfo'"
Dim dbConnection As System.Data.IDbConnection = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connectionString)

Dim queryString As String = "SELECT Names.* FROM Names WHERE (Names.First_Name = @First_Name)"
Dim dbCommand As System.Data.IDbCommand = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand
dbCommand.CommandText = queryString
dbCommand.Connection = dbConnection

Dim dbParam_first_Name As System.Data.IDataParameter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter
dbParam_first_Name.ParameterName = "@First_Name"
dbParam_first_Name.Value = first_Name
dbParam_first_Name.DbType = System.Data.DbType.StringFixedLength
dbCommand.Parameters.Add(dbParam_first_Name)

Dim dataAdapter As System.Data.IDbDataAdapter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter
dataAdapter.SelectCommand = dbCommand
Dim dataSet As System.Data.DataSet = New System.Data.DataSet
dataAdapter.Fill(dataSet)

Return dataSet
End Function

Code that I would like to work

Function GetName(ByVal first_Name As String) As System.Data.DataSet
Dim connectionString As String = "server='(local)'; trusted_connection=true; database='FamilyInfo'"
Dim dbConnection As System.Data.IDbConnection = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connectionString)

Dim queryString As String = "SELECT Names.* FROM Names WHERE (Names.First_Name LIKE '%' + @First_Name '+')"
Dim dbCommand As System.Data.IDbCommand = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand
dbCommand.CommandText = queryString
dbCommand.Connection = dbConnection

Dim dbParam_first_Name As System.Data.IDataParameter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter
dbParam_first_Name.ParameterName = "@First_Name"
dbParam_first_Name.Value = first_Name

dataAdapter.SelectCommand = dbCommand
Dim dataSet As System.Data.DataSet = New System.Data.DataSet

Wild Card Search In Table Adapter Using SQL ServerCE

Apr 14, 2008

Hi All,
I'm trying to use a very simple SQL String that check if a specific string exist in the DB.
When I do the SQL and use a regular Connection I get the result.
When I use a data set and on the table adapter I need to use the "LIKE %" method I get an error.

What should I write on the table adapter in order to make this search?

ItemID is a type string.

This is my SQL:
SELECT itemID, itemName
FROM Items
WHERE (itemID LIKE @ItemIDTemp)

This sample give no result
or

SELECT itemID, itemName
FROM Items
WHERE (itemID LIKE '%' + @ItemIDTemp + '%')

This sample return an error message
"Data conversion failed. [OLEDB status value (if known)=2]"

What is the right way to do so?

SQL Search :: Full Text Search With Single Character Returns All Rows

Jul 21, 2015

Our clients want to be able to do full text search with a single letter. (Is the name Newton, Nathan, Nick?, Is the ID N1, N2...). Doing a single character full text search on a table work 25 out of 26 times. The letter that doesn't work is 'n'. the WHERE clause CONTAINS(full_text_field, ' "n*" ') returns all rows, even rows that have no 'n' in them anywhere. Adding a second letter after the "n" works as expected.

Here is an example

create table TestFullTextSearch (
Id int not null,
AllText nvarchar(400)
)
create unique index test_tfts on TestFullTextSearch(Id);
create fulltext catalog ftcat_tfts;

Wildcard Search - Column Value Containing % Character

May 8, 2006

Hi All,

I have a company table with CompanyName and Address details.
In the Company Name field - I have got companies with names like - 'The 1% Club', '99% Pure Water', 'The 1% Golfer' etc...

I want to search for Companies with % using the LIKE clause - Say for ex.

SELECT CompanyName from Company WHERE CompanyName LIKE 'The 1%%'

I was expecting the above query to return - All Companies starting with 'The 1%' - So from the above list - I expected it to return - 'The 1% Club' and 'The 1% Golfer'.

Unfortunately the query isn;t accepting % in the WHERE LIKE clause except for the wildcard character.

Is there a way out to escape the Wildcard Characters present in the Field Values while searching.

Thanks,
Loonysan

Using LIKE And Wild Cards In Form Query

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,
I am using Visual Studio 2005. I am trying to create a ASP.net website and use a web form to get the results of an enquiry. It is almost the same as the presentation video on this website called "How to Create Data Driven Website", but I have added a new twist to it.  I want to use the "LIKE" instead of "=" in my SQL statement and I want to use wild cards in the parameter value that I enter.
<form id="form1" runat="server">    <div>        &nbsp;<asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>
<%        dim str as string = "%" & textbox1.text & "%"        </%>        <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox2" runat="server" Visible="False" Text=str></asp:TextBox>        <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Submit" Width="87px" BackColor="Khaki" ForeColor="Navy" PostBackUrl="~/Default.aspx" />
and the ControlID of the Datagrid will take in the value of "TextBox2" instead of "TextBox1" as so:
   <SelectParameters>                <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="TextBox2" DefaultValue="SO06000001" Name="SO" PropertyName="Text"                    Type="String" />
 However the syntax above does not work. May I ask what is the correct syntax?
Thanks.

I don't get the correct result at all.

If I change my search_clause to "hepatitis" and "hepatocellular carcinoma -- without the "b"

It seems MS Search doesn't like the phrase contain one letter or some sort or is it a know bug?

Read Chinese Character From SQL(SQL Server 2005) Database Table Column And Display Chinese Character

Feb 1, 2008

Hi!

I have a table like this below and it doesn't only contain English Names but it also contain Chinese Name.
CREATE TABLE Names
(FirstName NVARCHAR (50),
LastName NVARCHAR (50));
I tried to view the column using SQL Query Analyzer, It didn't display Chinese Character.
I know that SQL Server 2005 is using UCS-2 Encoding and Chinese Character uses Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) Encoding.
I want to read the FirstName and LastName columns and display in Window Form Data Grid and ASP.NET Grid View.
I tried to use this code below and it didn't work. It convert some of the English Name to Chinese Character and it display the chinese character and some still in the original unreadable characters.
Does anybody know how to read those character from SQL Table and display the correct Chinese Character without converting the English Name into Chinese also?
Thanks

int codePage = 950;
StringBuilder message = new StringBuilder();
Encoding targetEncoding = Encoding.GetEncoding(codePage);
byte[] encodedChars= targetEncoding.GetBytes(str);
.
message.AppendLine("Byte representation of '" + str + "' in Code Page '" + codePage + "':");
for (int i = 0; i < encodedChars.Length; i++)
{
message.Append("Byte " + i + ": " + encodedChars);
}

message.AppendLine(" RESULT : " + System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetString(encodedChars));

Help W/ Stored Procedure? - Full-text Search: Search Query Of Normalized Data

Mar 29, 2008

 Hi -  I'm short of SQL experience and hacking my way through creating a simple search feature for a personal project. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me out with writing a stored procedure. Problem: I have two tables with three columns indexed for full-text search. So far I have been able to successfully execute the following query returning matching row ids:  dbo.Search_Articles        @searchText varchar(150)        AS    SELECT ArticleID     FROM articles    WHERE CONTAINS(Description, @searchText) OR CONTAINS(Title, @searchText)    UNION    SELECT ArticleID     FROM article_pages    WHERE CONTAINS(Text, @searchText);        RETURN This returns the ArticleID for any articles or article_pages records where there is a text match. I ultimately need the stored procedure to return all columns from the articles table for matches and not just the StoryID. Seems like maybe I should try using some kind of JOIN on the result of the UNION above and the articles table? But I have so far been unable to figure out how to do this as I can't seem to declare a name for the result table of the UNION above. Perhaps there is another more eloquent solution? Thanks! Peter

SQL Server 2014 :: Semantic Search Not Finding Keywords Identified By Full-Text Search?

Nov 6, 2014

I have a scenario of where the standard Full-Text search identifies keywords but Semantic Search does not recognize them as keywords. I'm hoping to understand why Semantic Search might not recognize them. The context this is being used in medical terminology and the specific key words I noticed missing right off the bat were medications.

For instance, if I put the following string into a FT indexed table

'J9355 - Trastuzumab (Herceptin)'
AND
'J9355 - Trastuzumab emtansine'

The Semantic Search recognized 'Herceptin' and 'Emtansine' but not 'Trastuzumab'

Nor in

'J8999 - Everolimus (Afinitor)'

It did not recognize 'Afinitor' as a keyword.

In all cases the Base of Full-Text did find those keywords and were identifiable using the dmvsys.dm_fts_index_keywords_by_document.It does show the index as having completed.

why certain words might not be picked up while others would be? Could it be a language/dictionary issue? I am using English and accent insensitive settings?

Create Site Search Using Sql Server Full Text Search

Jul 24, 2007

would you use sql server "full text search" feature as your site index?  from some reason i can't make index server my site search catalog, and i wonder if the full text is the solution. i think that i wll have to you create new table called some thing like "site text" and i will need to write every text twice- one the the table (let's say "articles table") and one to the text. other wise- there is problems finding the right urlof the text, searching different tables with different columns name and so on...
so i thought create site search table, with the columns:
id, text, url
and to write every thing to this table.
but some how ot look the wrong way, that every forum post, every article, album picture or joke will insert twice to the sqr server...
what do you think?
