Close All Existing Connections And Processes To A Database

Jun 4, 2007

Dear all

I created this trigger on a table that i think failed while execution. I tried to modify it and run it again but it seems that i cant do that. If i try and delete the database i also cant - saying that it is still in use. But i am not using it and ther are no other users connected to it. I think the trigger has probably hit a loop and that is holding the link.

To close that i know that a solution would be to restart the SQL server instance but that would be a bit hard since the SQL server where my test database resides is a production server and has few other databases that are important and few users use them.

Is there any way through a SQL statement that there can be forced a delete? Or force close all the connections? Or force close all the processes without actually restarting the SQL server instance.

I have tried all options that were offered on some other forums like forcing it to a single user but even that operation can not be performed saying that the database is still in use.

Thank you so much for all your help and time.

Sincerely

Dan

Force To Close Existing Connections When Restoring Existing Database

Aug 13, 2007

Hi All,

I would like to restore database using RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command.
If database exists already and has any open connections this command will fail.
I would like to close all existing connections to specific database before running RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command.
I can do closing from Management Studio using checkbox "Close Existing Connection" when deleting database. Actually I need to do the same but from script.

Please advice me how to do it.

Thanks in advance,
Roman

SQL 2012 :: Close ALL Connections To Particular Database Engine In Management Studio?

Jul 14, 2015

In SQL Server Management Studio, it is possible to do the following:

a) In Object Explorer, connect to a particular SQL Server Database Engine, let's call it X.
b) Use that connection to generate many SQL queries, connected to X, in the right-hand pane.
c) In Object Explorer, connect to a particular SQL Server Database Engine, let's call it Y.
d) Use that connection to generate many SQL queries, connected to Y, in the right-hand pane.
e) Close the connection to X, which was created in step (a), from within Object Explorer.

In the right-hand pane, I am now left with a bunch of queries connected to X, and a similar bunch of queries connected to Y. Any quick way to shut all the queries connected to X, but none of the queries connected to Y?

This question can assume real practical importance if server X is a Live Production Server, and server Y is a Test Server, and my next job of the day is to run a change script against server Y....

I have looked for an option in Management Studio to "Close all queries connected to Server X", but haven't found one.

Mutiple Processes/connections Problem

Dec 27, 2004

Hi All,

I'm relatively new to ASP.NET coming from ASP. I've created a new, relatively simple ASP.NET application using WebMatrix with various controls and pages accessing an SQL Server database.

3 people are trying to use this app. After a short amount of time, the server starts kicking back an error message that it can not open a connection. I go in with Enterprise Manager to the SQL Server and I can see a long list of processes there almost as if each page is opening a connection and not closing. I'm explicitly closing all connections in my code where I open them for use by a data reader. What about data grid controls. Do they leave connections open? How about the drag and drop insert/update/delete functions. Unless I'm mistaken, this should close the connection when the function completes, shouldn't it:

Try
rowsAffected = dbCommand.ExecuteNonQuery
Finally
dbConnection.Close
End Try

I originally did this app connecting to an Access database but had the same problem. I figured it was due to the known connection issues with Access via ADO so I upsized to SQL Server and over time, get this same problem.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Larry

Keep A Few Connections Open All The Time Or Open/close Connections On The Fly?

Jul 20, 2005

Just a quick question about connection management. My application willnever need more than 1 or 2 connections about at any given time. Also, I donot expect many users to be connected at any given time. For efficiency, Iwould like to keep connections alive throughout the lifetime of the objectsrequiring them, rather than opening a new connection, executing code andthen closing it again. What is the most efficient way of doing this?Should I perform the open/close or just one open when I create the objectand a close when I dispose of it?

Need Script To Kill All Processes On A Database

Aug 2, 2007

I restore a backup every week. It serves a couple of purposes. One, to verify the backup and secondly, to give us a current testing/training environment. As things evolve, it would be nice to script this and then schedule it as a job.

I can write the restore statement, but it fails if any sessions are open on the db. I thought about using sp_who and the the kill statement. But I was having trouble using the recordset returned by sp_who.

Now I'm thinking the sysprocess table is a better place to look. Does anybody have some experience in this area and can point me in the right direction?

While I'm going down this path, does anybody have a script to look at the master database and dynamically manage their backup strategy? That would be super cool?!?!

Thanks,

Database Design Question. I Am Close ;)

Oct 27, 2005

Lets say I am selling parts for cars, trucks, suvs, vans, etc.
I want a user to search for a part by selecting a vehicle type, then a vehicle make, and then a vehicle model.
So
Vehicle Makes have to be related to Vehicle Types (I.E: Land Rover doesn’t make a car) and vehicle models need to be related to vehicle make (I.E Toyato doesn’t make a mustang Ford does).
So I am okay with those relationships individually but what is confusing me is how to ensure that a Mustang doesn’t show up as a Ford Car.

Lets say I have:
vehicle_typevehicle_type_cdvehicle_type_desc

vehicle_makevehicle_make_cdvehicle_make_descvehicle_modelvehicle_model_cdvehicle_model_descThen I might have an intersect between vehicle_type and vehicle_make because certain makes don’t have certain types of vehicles.  BMW doesn’t have a truck, Lexus doesn’t have a truck, so when a user selects truck as a make lexus nad BMW shouldn’t show up in the drop down.Vehicle_type_makeVehicle_type_make_keyVehicle_type_cdVehicle_make_cd I might have the same relationship between make and model:

Trying To Attach Database In VS2005 And All DB Files Say They Are Being Used And To Close...they Are NOT Open.

Apr 13, 2008

Just to verify that this was an issue, I downloaded web developer 2008 and I do not experience this same problem.

BUT when I go to add a dataset in vs2005 for an asp website - all my db files come up in the dialogue box but everyone that click (every db file) I get "This file is in use. Please enter a new name or close the file that's open in another program."

But, like I said, I downloaded 2008 and it does not occur. Plus I KNOW that the db's are not being used. Can someone give me a remedy to this?

Web Application That Deals With Slow/time Consuming Database Processes

Dec 19, 2007

Hello All,
I’m looking for a solution to timeouts that occur when I’m executing a stored procedure from my web application. Most of the SPs will run from 3 to 15 minutes, and, unfortunately, modifying/optimizing them isn’t an option at the moment. I tried setting the CommandTimeout to 0 with no luck. Unless, I didn’t use it properly. Here’s my code:  1
2 try
3 {
4 string dbConn = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConStringNTMTLDEV"].ToString();
5 OleDbConnection connection = new OleDbConnection(dbConn);
6
7 lbl_SearchResult.Text = dbConn;
8
9 //OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter();
10 OleDbCommand cmd = new OleDbCommand("SP_CallHistoryLookUp", connection);
11 cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
12
13 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@phoneNumber", "1234567890"));
14 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@email", "123@123.com"));
15 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@WebUser", "123"));
16 connection.Open();
17 cmd.CommandTimeout = 0;
18 cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
19 cmd.Dispose();
20 connection.Close();
21 }catch(OleDbException ex)
22 {
23 lbl_SearchResult.Text += "&lt;br/> Something went wrong </br>";
24 lbl_SearchResult.Text += ex.Message.ToString();
25 }
26
27
28
  Is it possible to launch a stored procedure and close the connection without waiting for a result?Would the stored procedure still run on the SQL server? I’m using MSSQL 7. Would you have any examples that would solve this problem? Thank you for your help.
R.

SQL Server 2014 :: Restoring Database Programmatically But Not Over Existing Live Database

Aug 6, 2015

I want to restore a database (from an encrypted .bak file) - but *not* over the live original if you take my meaning. Encryption is the standard AES-256 that comes with Sql Server 2014 btw. I don't want the original touched/altered in any way. I would like to capture a success message if possible.I can extract the physical device name of the database in question using the following code:

SELECT physical_device_name, *
FROM msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily
WHERE media_set_id =(SELECT TOP 1 media_set_id
FROM msdb.dbo.backupset
WHERE database_name='MyDatabase'
AND type='D'
ORDER BY backup_start_date DESC)

I would like if the newly restored database was rename to something different than 'MyDatabase' (as shown above) and has different logs than the original. If possible, and capture a success message when restored.

Does SSIS Database Copy Overwrite Existing User Permission To That Database?

Sep 24, 2007

Hi guys,

I've been assigned the task of setting up access to our SQL Server 2005 box. A consultant developing for us has accessing to 2 databases and I've set this up fine. It appears however that one of these databases is re-copied over to the server every night to keep data reasonably current.

I'm not interesting in changing this method as I'm not the maintainer (as yet).

Basically I would like to know if I've setup access to this database (it works fine), when the database is updated (with an SSIS package) the account seems to get deleted. Do the original permissions from the source database overwrite those of its destination?

Cheers

Database Connections

May 25, 2006

Hi all,

I am fairly new to mobile development and im trying to write a simple application that can read, write from a SQL Server Mobile Database and load data into a list view. The problem im having is trying to find examples on how to do this and i cant seem to get many of the ones i find to work properly. Im still use to recordsets and adodb and if anyone has any examples on how to do this that would be great.

Also, would it possible if someone could explain this code to me as well

 Dim conn As SqlCeConnection = Nothing
Dim cmd As SqlCeCommand = Nothing
Dim rdr As SqlCeDataReader = Nothing

Try
' Open the connection and create a SQL command
'
conn = New SqlCeConnection("Data Source = AdventureWorks.sdf")
conn.Open()

cmd = New SqlCeCommand("SELECT * FROM DimEmployee", conn)

rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader()

' Iterate through the results
'
While rdr.Read()
Dim employeeID As Integer = rdr.GetInt32(0) ' or: rdr["EmployeeKey"];
Dim lastName As String = rdr.GetString(5) ' or: rdr["FirstName"];
End While

' Always dispose data readers and commands as soon as practicable
'
rdr.Close()
cmd.Dispose()
Finally
' Close the connection when no longer needed
'
conn.Close()
End Try

Thanks

How Can You View The Connection String Of An Existing Datasource? How Do You Delete Existing Dataset?

I dont see the dataset in solution explorer, I see it only in the text box on the data tab and in a limited kind of way on the dataset view where the columns show and maint is allowed mostly on the columns only. I tried hilighting the dataset here and hitting the delete key to no avail.

Accessing An Existing Database

Jan 23, 2008

I have a MSSQL database from a pre-existing app. The data files do not have an MDF exension, they have a .dat extension. I can however use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express to run queries against the files, but I can not get VB 2005 to connect. When I attemp to add it as a project data source, I get the following error:

"An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file c:dataMSSQL$DATA_SQL....dat* failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."

*Database names = company names are omitted to 'protect the innocent'.

Does anyone have any ideas? Since Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express worked so cleanly with the database I was expecting to easily get to the same data using VB.

Clone New Database From Existing

Jan 19, 2007

How do I go about creating a cloned copy of an existing database on the same server? I basically want to set up a test copy of a production database, but let it reside on the same server with a slightly different name, prefixed with 'Testing_".

I typically just use Studio Express Manager and not scripts to do admin tasks. Here's what I tried that didn't work so well:

* Had full backups of production db
* Detached production database I wanted to clone
* From within Win Explorer, copy the .mdf and .ldf files within same data folder and gave them a new name, prefixing with "Testing_"
* Re-attached prodution db
* Attached "Testing_..." database

Sql Express seems confused at this point with new database I attached. It references the full path of the database I copied from (c:program filesmicrosoft sql servermssql.1data...". I rename the datbase, removing full path and prefixing with "Testing_".

* Using Sql authentication, changed the default database for the Login account to the new cloned copy of database.
* Did some query level data sanitizing to the cloned copy of the db. I am positive I performed this on the correct db.
* Was able to connect/authenticate to the cloned copy through a custom VB app on my dev machine, and all looked well.
* Tried to connect to the cloned db from another machine and couldn't. Went back to my dev machine and noticed the original production db looked hosed -- there were no tree nodes available to it! Was still able to connect to the cloned "Testing_" db copy, but not able to connect/authenticate anymore to the production copy.
* Detached cloned copy of "Testing_" db and moved it out of the data folder.
* Detached production db. Got an error msg indicating operation failure of some kind, but the database was gone from the tree.
* Reattached the production db but couldn't hit it from my custom vb app. Re-did the login and user accounts used by the app and was able to hit it. However, the data sanitizing I had done earlier in the cloned copy clearly was visibile in the production db!
* Had to restore production db from backup. Had problems authenticating from app, and recreated User account before the app was to connect.

Q1: What I am doing wrong? Sql Express was obviously as confused as me somewhere along the line.

Q2: Is specifying a default database used by a Login account necessary for a VB app like mine. I think it was something I discovered in the past, however, this would seemingly present a problem whenever I want my app to hit a different database, established through a connection string.

TIA...

Rick
