First of all, I've been a reader of swynk.com for quite sometime now, and I'd like to say 'thank you' to everyone who contributes.
Today, I'm the town moron.. haha I'm having issues with column level constraints. I have a varchar(50) where I want to keep *,=,#,/, .. etc, OUT OF the value input. I don't want to strip them. I simply want for sql to throw an error if the insert contains those (and other characters). The only characters that I want in the column are A-Z and 0-9. However, it's not a set number of characters per insert. It always varies... There has to be an easier way to do this than creating a constraint for every possibilty... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have created a simple package to load an Excel Spreadsheet into a SQL Server table. There is a one to one relationship between the columns in the .xls file and the columns in the DB record. I am getting integrity constraint errors when I try to load all numeric data from the spreadsheet (defined as Category General in excel, not defined as numeric but consisting of all numeric characters) into a column defined as (nvarchar(20), not null) in SQL Server Management Studio. There are no constraints on the column.
I have been able to temporarily bypass the offending rows, but I do need to load them into SQL Server. The problem column has a mixture of data, two examples would be: N255, 168050. It's the 168050 value that's causing the Task to bomb. How can I get this loaded into my table ?
I am running the package from within MS Visual Studio 2005 Version 8, Excel is version 2003 (11.8120.8122) SP2

I want to enforce a unique constraint on a column which must be encrypted in MSSQL 2005 using Cell Level Encyption (CLE).

Hi.
I was wondering how I should go about doing this thing. I need to put a value in a column that is based on values on other columns in the same row.
When this statement executes I need to put a value in Col3.
insert into myTable(Col1, Col2)
values(25, -14)
Something like so:
if(Col1 >0 AND Col2 <0)
set Col3 = Col1 - Col2
else
set Col3 = Col1;
I don't now quite how to solve this. I am really going to need this value in a column. Calculating the value at retrieval is not on option...
I appreciate all help. I'm using SQL Server 2005.

in a asp .net application, I call a stored procedure which have a output parameter.
the output parameter works find in sql session, but not in the asp .net application.
if I put select msg_out = "error message" in position A(see below for stored proc), it works fine
if I put them inside the if statement, the output parameter wont work in asp .net application, but fine in SQL session
The stored proc was created like this:
Create procedure XXXXXXX
(@msg_out varchar(80) OUTPUT
)

while exists (*******)
begin
//position A
if certain condition
begin
select msg_out = "error message"
return 1
end
end
end
end
It seems to me that anything inside if - the second begin...end - it wont get executed.
Anyone has got a clue

I am writing a SQL 2000 stored procedure which uses an €˜EXEC @sqlString€™ statement. The @sqlString is generated at runtime. I want to give as few permissions as possible and currently allow users to access the database tables using only the stored procedures provided. However, with €˜Exec€™ I discover that I need to grant permissions on the actual tables to the users or groups. I would like to avoid this. I would also prefer not having to maintain a separate user with table level permissions and hardcoding the stored procedure with these details.
Is there anyway for me to dynamically generate the required SQL statement within my stored procedure and let SQL know that this stored procedure is allowed to select whatever tables it wants to without having to define permissions on the tables?

I know how to a convert a single-column foreign key constraint into a trigger (i.e., to resolve diamond-structured references).

I am fairly new to using triggers and stored procs in SQL Server and could use some help.
Scenario:
I have a table on SQL Server database running on a Windows server (of course) that contains information about articles. A second server in the shop is set up as a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) box. What I would like to do is any time the SQL server table is updated or a record is added, tables in MySQL would then be updated to reflect the changes on the first server. My thought is to try and do this with triggers and a stored proc.
Questions:
1) Assuming MySQL can be accessed through ODBC, can an ODBC connection be set up inside a stored proc or trigger, or would this have to be done through the Windows ODBC Data Sources tool in the control panel?
2) Can a Stored Proc be used in a trigger?
3) Can a Stored Proc call an outside function, such as an API call for third party software?

I am trying to create a trigger that fires after a user logon and logoff and does the following:
creates a new user
deletes data from old temp table
Then I need to create a stored procedure that executes dynamically to
drop old users
remove the old user account access
We are running SQL Server 2000.
Since I am new to T-SQL programming could anyone help point me in the right direction? Can I write dynamic SQL in a trigger to do these things?

I have a database trigger that is set to call a CLR trigger/stored proc when a certain field in a table is updated. The issue is that if i execute the stored proc manually in enterprise studio, it works perfectly but the same call made through the trigger does not go through. A few more details -
I have CLR integration enabled on the sql server.
The dbo has UNSAFE ASSEMBLY rights

I writing a unit test which has one stored proc calling data from another stored proc. I have the need to remove a constraint on a table since I'm trying to alterthe datatype of one of the columns. Please help with a problem - I need to execute the following process:
(1) Create about 200 empty tables in a database (this MUST be done prior to step 2)
(2) copy rows from a source database with identical tables into all of the empty tables,
(3) copy more rows from a third database source (with some duplicate rows) into the tables from step 2.
The problem is that the first copy goes OK since the tables are empty,
but the second copy fails as soon as a duplicate row triggers an error in the DTS tool.
At that point, the DTS tool goes on to the next table until the problem is repeated.
In Oracle, I can set a flag for import such as IGNORE=YES which will ignore object or row creation errors.
How can I get DTS to ignore row creation errors, due to expected duplicate row constraints,
and just carry on with the next row after each rejected row?
In other words, set DTS to simply reject duplicate rows without aborting the entire table copy.

I am usings transact sql..
Using a stored proc. I need a generic starting point. I am trying to get order categories ie. oranges, bananas, pears on the horizontal and then the daily totals vertically for each day of the month. Just say the # under ea is the total of boxes received daily. The total under each category would be determined by the receipt date. Also
I need a total category for each fruit under each as month-date and year-to-date. This should be updated daily. Obviously my actual prog is more complicated then this but I just need an idea where to start.

I am working with a large application and am trying to track down a bug. I believe an error that occurs in the stored procedure isbubbling back up to the application and is causing the application not to run. Don't ask why, but we do not have some of the sourcecode that was used to build the application, so I am not able to trace into the code.
So basically I want to examine the stored procedure. If I run the stored procedure through Query Analyzer, I get the following error message:
Msg 2758, Level 16, State 1, Procedure GetPortalSettings, Line 74RAISERROR could not locate entry for error 60002 in sysmessages.
(1 row(s) affected)
(1 row(s) affected)
I don't know if the error message is sufficient enough to cause the application from not running? Does anyone know? If the RAISERROR occursmdiway through the stored procedure, does the stored procedure terminate execution?
Also, Is there a way to trace into a stored procedure through Query Analyzer?

I want to perform column level and database level encryption/decryption....
Does any body have that code written in C# or VB.NET for AES-128, AES-192, AES-256 algorithms...
I have got code for single string... but i want to encrypt/decrypt columns and sometimes the whole database...
Can anybody help me out...
If you have Store procedure in SQL for the same then also it ll do...

When a record is inserted I like the duration column to be computed.This should happen only after the first record to the table has gotten inserted.You might say a trigger would be the best.. Ok then, show me the syntax.
Or I am thinking can we write a user defined function that will compute the value for the duration column.
--By default, I would like to update the duration column as follows:
--It should record the number of seconds between the last insertion ( You can get that time from the time_recorded column from the previous record and the current time can be obtained from the getdate() function )

When updating data using .NET 2.0 SqlDataAdapter and a strong typed dataset, it seems that constraints (foreign key) and trigger are disabled. I'm using a stored procedure to delete rows and calling it from SSMS causes the trigger to fire. Calling it via the SqlDataAdapter not.
Can someone confirm this?
At least here, my triggers don't fire.
How can I enable, that triggers in SQL Server do fire?
Are there differences in this behaviour when using batch updates or not?
