I'm planning to develop asoftware working over SQL Server Express Edition, And I was wondering how would different users connect to sql server xe remotly from their machines? and is there a limitation to the number of users who could connect at same time? Is there a client app to installed on their machines, or its just the main db on the server??

I'm having a problem connecting with a Java application but I CAN connect using my .Net application - the user name and password are the same for both (using the same database on SQL Server Express 2005).
The error I get is: "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "CORNERS" requested by the login. The login failed." An interesing note - I get the same message if the database is not running.
SQL Server Express 2005 is installed in mixed mode.
Here is my connection string in the .Net appplication: <add key="connectString" value="Server=(local);UID=sa;PWD=myPasswd;Database=CORNERS" />.
Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?
I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. Am I missing something here? This is the error:<<An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)>>The server is not remote so I don't see why I need to enable remote connection. I am also using the default connection settings.
On my home machine without permanent network connections enabled, I cannot get the Management Studio connect to the database server. Always get this error:
Cannot connect ot MPLIAMSQLEXPRESS
Additional Information:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, erro: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)
I have used the SQL Surface Area Configuration Tool to reset the defaults to allow remote connections, stopped and restarted the server, but still get the same message.
Hey all! I am new in this form and also new with the SQL serve. I have installed that free express edition of SQL server 2005 and when i am trying to connect to server from my C#.net application i am not able to do it and when i am trying to degug it gives me the error that is the user is not SQL thrusted user. I am able to connect directly thru SQL server using this userid and password but not thru VWD 2005 Express application.
I have read online that so many people are having that problem. so is it the problem of swl server Express edition or do i have to make some setting to connect to the application.
Please please please please someone guide me . I am stuck here in the beginning only. I would really appreciate it.
the code that i wrote is here:----

I have Remote Connections enabled (I think). Any advise is greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to connect a DB in SQL express with a program in VB.NET Express. I'm using the Data Source Configuration Wizzard. When I select the file (.mdf), the following message appears:
Unable to open the physical file "path to my file". Operating system error 5: "5(error not found)".
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file 'myFile' failed. A database with the same name exists, or secified file cannot be opened, or it is located in UNC share.
I'm using the Windows authentication for this, but if I try with the sa user, I get the following message:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. The connection will be closed.

just installed a new machine with windows 2003 server and SQL SERVER EXPRESS; I am able to connect to the SQL Server using my windows credentials however I am unable to log on to it using 'sa' (and no password) user; i get the following error message.
2007-05-07 15:42:12.32 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 7. 2007-05-07 15:42:12.32 Logon Login failed for user 'sa'. [CLIENT: <local machine>]
I'm trying to connect to a SQL Server 2005 express on my local Windows XP Professional machine. I've searched the the MS fora and Google but all the answers I find relate to trying to connect to a remote DB, not local.
I run the aspnet_regsql.exe program in the interactive wizard mode, and in the Select the Server and Database step when I click on the Database drop-down list an error box pops up:
Connection failed
Failed to query a list of database names from the SQL server.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Exactly the same error message appears when I:
* Change the 'Server' name from my computer's name to localhost, 127.0.0.1, or SQLEXPRESS. in the aspnet_regsql wizard.
* Stop my firewall (ZoneAlarm, native Windows firewall is disabled, and I switched off my cable modem at the time).
* Use the SQL Server surface area utility to enable remote connections with both named pipes and TCP/IP), and also to enable CLR integration in the Features section.
* Stop the SQL Server service. I did this to see if a different error occurred, but it's as if aspnet_regsql.exe can't even see the SQL Server.
* Have an additional instance of SQL Server running under my own username (see below).
I have an ASP.NET project (created by someone else on another computer) which attempts to open a SQL Server database. It runs fine until the call to System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection::Open() which raises an exception with exactly the same error string as above (including what's in parentheses). The connection string is "Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=blah;Integrated Security=SSPI;" where blah is specific to the company I'm doing this for.
I've created a test ASP.NET project to which I added a SQL Database. My only option was to create a .mdf file in the APP_DATA folder. The connection string is "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" and it works fine and displays the data I've put into the database, but in the Task Manager another instance of sqlservr.exe appears (running under my username; the existing sqlservr.exe runs under the NETWORK SERVICE username). Should this happen??
If I stop the SQL Server service (or both of them), an error message in my web browser appears (no exception is raised because there's no code in the project, just a data-bound control). The error is the same as above, except the parenthetical part is "(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)".
Edit: oh yeah, I've also tried to set up an ODBC data source connected to SQL Server throught the Control Panel/Admin, but the ODBC applet can't seem to see SQL Server either. I only get three options for data sources: dBASE files (.dbf), Excel files (.xls), and MS Access Database (.mdb). If I click on 'Add' and select "SQL Server" and go on from there, it comes back and says the server doesn't exist or refuses access. If I stop the service, the ODBC applet says the sql server wasn't found.
I'm using a Windows XP Home laptop to connect to a network of one of my customers. The administrator of the customer has given me a username and password for a VPN connection. I've got the VPN connection working and I can ping the SQL Express server.
This server is using Windows Authentication. For the users of my VB application we have added a group to the Active Directory and added this group as a user to the SQL Express Server. This works and the users can access the database from within the application. The SQL Express Server allows remote connections and the browser service is also running.
I would like to use the SQL management Studio Express on my laptop to access the remote SQL Express server and manage the database files. To do this I first connect to the remote LAN using VPN and add the address of the SQL EXpress server in the field 'Server name' of the 'Connect to server' screen. The authentication field is set to Windows Authentication. However the username is greyed out and states the login for the SQL Express server on my laptop: laptopusername. How can I correct this?
I don't know whether the username of the VPN connection is in the Active Directory. Should this be the case and should this user also be added to the login/user of the SQL Express server? And how do I get the Management Studio to connect to the remote server? Could XP Home be the bottleneck as it cannot logon to a domain?
Is there a limitation in sql server 2005 express that it does not accept connections via the network? I am trying to develop a web application running the web server as a VM but I can't connect to the sql server on the host machine. Similarly, I can't create an ODBC connection on the VM, but I can on the host. I could install sql express on the VM, that is probably the next thing I'll try.
I can't connect to the local sql express server. I see in microsoft sql server management studio express that the server is running but I don't fint the server in access 2003. I work with vista. what can be the reason?
We have two Baan erp servers 1) SQL2005 on windows 2003 server 2) SQL2000 on windows 200 server.
SQL 2005 server has two database instances, one being the default and the other one as a named instance.
We have been trying to access the data in these two database instances from the second server for our baan erp application on it. Now, we are able to see the data for default instance, but if we try to fetch the data from named instance we end up getting dberror 17.
We tried to register the named instance on the second server using "new sql server registration wizard" in sql 2000 enterprise manager, but there also the list only shows the default instance from sql 2005 server. I tried to type in the named instance and register (both windows and sql server authentication), but end up getting error "Database instance doesn't exist or access denied".
So, for some reason, the named instance from sql 2005 server is not getting published on the network. Please suggest some ways to get around this issue.
All, I'm a newbie here so forgive me if I have missed something completely obvious. I have bought a shopping cart script of a well known company (Evolve Merchant 5) and I wish to set it up locally on my development server, I created a virtual directory, set the web application up and get the asp pages to display perfectly. However, in the configuration file (global.asa & web.config) for the application it reguests information to be provided: <add key="DBName" value="Database name" /> <add key="DBServer" value="IP address of server" /> <add key="DBUserName" value="User name" /> <add key="DBPassword" value="password" /> <add key="AltPassword" value="password" />
What I can't determine is what the SQL Server 2005's IP address is? the pages of this application show when I type http://localhost/catalogue into IE, so I presumed the server address would be the IP of localhost, when typed ping localhost into command promt it gives me 127.0.0.1, but when I enter this into the config file and try to load the application it just hangs and then eventually says: "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied./catalogue/global.asa, line 54" I have created a new database in SQL Express called: merchant509 and restored the tables to it as the manufactures help files state, I created a new login called shop which uses SQl authentication, so as I can provide a password. So the settings should look like this: <add key="DBName" value="Database name" /> <add key="DBServer" value="127.0.0.1" /> <add key="DBUserName" value="shop" /> <add key="DBPassword" value="1684" /> <add key="AltPassword" value="1684" />
But it doesn't work, does anyone know what i have done wrong?? the SQL server is runnign on the same computer as I am trying to access it from, it is set to accept all forms of comunication i.e. TCP/IP etc.. in the server configuration manager the IP address part of TCP/IP in protocols shows IP1 as 192.168.2.2 active yes enabled yes, and IP2 as 127.0.0.1 active yes and enables yes, I have tried the 192.168.2.2 and this gives the same errors, this is my registed IP on my home network. I'm now stumped, I haven't a clue what else I can try, I would be very greatfull if anyone has any ideas. Regards, Daniel Coates
Hi, I am trying to connect with Database.mdf(Server Express) which is inside App_data with my ASP.NET website but i am receiveing an error which i have pasted below. I installed Sqlexpress server 2005 and am able to connect to the server using the sqlexpress manager.
The connection parameters are:
server: 127.0.0.1 (This is an alias name pointing to TMD03SQLEXPRESS) username:sa password:test mode: sql server and windows authentication mode TCP/IP : enabled and listening on port number 1433.
But I am not able to connect to the server using PHP's mssql_connect function.
but none of them works. I also tried OSQL and SQLCMD and they don't work either. They give me the following error message.

I am trying to do the Chapter 1 project of Getting Started with ADO.net 2.0 Step by Step (microsoft press)...
I enter the data source configuration wizard and select database, and press next.
I then press the new connection button, and the Choose data source screen appears.
In the List are only 2 options:
Microsoft Access Database File
Microsoft SQL Server Database File.
The option they want me to choose does not appear in the list.
Microsoft SQL Server sqlclient
I tried following the instructions in this thread [http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/showpost.aspx?postid=85686&siteid=1] where a user had a similar problem, but had no success.
I have reinstalled C#, reinstalled SQL Server Express 2005 with Advanced Tools, but neither helped.
