Connect To Database Without Server (was Stupid Newbie Question - Sorry In Advance)
Jan 19, 2005
Hi peoples...
I am a total newbie when it comes to SQL databases.
I currently work for a company developing software. We use a VB Development environment and connect to Dbase III database files using DAO... ewwwww...
We are looking to upgrade our development environment to VB.net and our database to either MSSQL or mySQL...
My question is - most of our users are on standalone machines. Our software is NOT internet based, nor do we want it that way at the moment.
Is there a way to connect to a MSSQL database (ie the .mdf file) without having a server running? Or are we better advised to stick to an MS Access database if this is the case....
Basically the reasoning behind upgrading is better speed and record locking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have an SSCE database that I did not create. I'd like the app I'm working on to programmatically create said database the first time it runs (if for no other reason than the fact the next version may want to need the schema and not wipe out what's already there.
My idea was to have the Management Studio give me a database creation script like SSDE would and execute the T-SQL commands inside of the app but it doesn't appear that's something the Studio will do for SSCE databases. Is there another/better way to pull this off?
Hi there I sorry if I have placed this query in the wrong place. I'm getting to grips with ASP.net 2, slowly but surely! When i try to access my site which uses a Sql Server 2005 express DB i am receiving the following error:
Server Error in '/jarebu/site1' Application.
Database 'd:hostingmemberasangaApp_DataASPNETDB.mdf' already exists.Could not attach file 'd:hostingmemberjarebusite1App_DataASPNETDB.MDF' as database 'ASPNETDB'. This is the connection string that I am using: <connectionStrings> <add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Initial Catalog=ASPNETDB;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings>
The database is definitly in the folder that the error message relates to. What I'm finding confusing is that the connection string seems to be finding "aranga"s database. Is it something daft?
I'm running Windows Xp Pro With SQL 2005 Dev edition with Adventure Works sample db installed. I am the local administrator on my desktop, the services are up and running and I specified local connections only since this is the DEV edition of SQL05.
When I try either one of these connection strings: Data source=(SQLDEV05); initial catalog=AdventureWorks or Data source=(local); initial catalog=AdventureWorks.
I receive this error message:
TITLE: Microsoft Report Designer -----------------------------
A connection cannot be made to the database. Set and test the connection string.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. I created a database in SSMS,but I can't connect to it using VB Express code. When I delete the database name from the server I can connect to server, but when I mention the name of the database or initial catalog,I receive a login failure error for the mentioned database...
My connection string is:
Dim conn1 As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;initial catalog=TEST1;" _
Everything is Local,I am using express version of SQL server and VB.How I am not be able to connect the database I created under the server in SSMS...I am really confused...
I am trying to speed up my update statements by removing inner selectstatements.Example:update orders set shipname = (select contactName fromcustomers where customerid = orders.customerID)I read some articles which said that I should be able to use an innerjoin on the update statement like the following:update orders set shipname = (select contactName from customers wherecustomerid = orders.customerID)But every time that I run this statement I get the follwing error:Server: Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 1Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'inner'.Any Help will be greatly appreciated.Thank you.
pls. let me know where I could post if this is the wrong place.
I have a Firebird 1.5 application. I created a linked server from my SQL Server 2000 to the firebird database. In SQL Server Query Analyzer I get errors from various ODBC drivers with "normal" queryies like
SELECT LVNR FROM LINKEDSRV...LVVERW
Pls. note, this all works perfectly in MS Access databases with ODBC-Links to Firebird!
From a programmer of a commercial ODBC driver I heard that this problem may be caused internally by SQL Server, there may be no solution possible in the ODBC driver. One workaround would be to use the OPENQUERY-Syntax like
SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(LINKEDSRV, 'select LVNR from LVVERW ')
Are there any other solutions? Are there any known issues with firebird odbc-drivers and sql server? Are there any known good drivers for the use with sql-server? What is the purpose of OPENQUERY - workaround ODBC problems? Are there any settings in SQL Server 2000 (2005 Express) that could help? Are there any settings in ODBC DSN that would help?
regards
arno

Hi, if I install SQL Server Express with Advance Services on top of my existing SQL Server Express installation, will it wipe out my existing database in my current SQL Server Express installation ?
My backups are failing sometimes. My db size is around 400 GB and we are taking backup to the remote server. Free size available on the disk is showing 600 GB but my database full backup run more than 10 hrs and failed. The failure reason is there is not enough space on the disk.
What could be the possible failure reasons? It has more than the the database size on the backup server but why it is showed that msg on the job failures. I noticed same thing occurred couple of times in the past.
Is there any way to find how much the backup file will be generate before we run the backup job?
i.e. If we run the full backup of test1 database now, it will generate ....bak file for that test1 db
currently we are using maintenance plan and with compression (2008R2) and the database has TDE enabled
I was unable to install the CTP version of SS Express Edition SP1 with Advance Services. The installation failed with the following error message:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup ------------------------------
SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'sa'. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. For details on how to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log Files" in SQL Server Books Online.
------------------------------ However, I was able to install and run the standard CTP version of SS Express Edition SP1 without any problems, even though the above error message indicated I may have login problem. First let me confess that my computer does not have IIS installed, which as I understand is only needed for running the Report Services. Is it necessary for IIS to be up and running while installing SSEE with Advance Services?
The main reason I want to install SSEE with Advance Services is to use the full text search capability. I do not need the Report Services, and was hoping there is an option to turn it off and not require IIS. Is this possible?
We need to use SQL Server Authentication for some reason and would like to enforce Password Policy with 90-day expiration period. I found "Change password" dialogue appears when I first logged in with the new user, but don't know
(1)what happens when the user failed to change the password before it's expired or (2)how a user can change his password in advance of the expiration date with no particular server-level permission.
I installed what I thought was SQL Server 2005 64bit, but I'm not sure. I used my action pack Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CD, and it's on a Windows 2003 64 bit machine. When I click help -> about in the SQL Server Management Console, it says "Microsoft SQL Server 2005". There's no 64 bit in there.
Can someone tell me how I can find out if I've correctly installed the 64 bit version?
Hi, I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error. Here is the error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Here is the Environment: App Server: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Inside Company's Firewall/ Network Database Server: Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition SQL Server 2000 SP4 Remote Connections to the Server is checked Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433) The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition. I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address. I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server). I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP? What do I tell the network admin to change? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Oran
Our SAP Sql server is on a cloud. I am currently able to access the SQL server from Remote Desktop Connection. I would like to know if I can connect to the Database server without the remote desktop.
Basically I am trying to develop Access Database queries on local computer and I want to pull the data from Remote Server. There is a firewall that is blocking the external ip address.
I would like to know if there is a workaround to set up the connection to first access the "Remote desktop" link and then the SQL server.
Set cnnTest = New ADODB.Connection cnnTest.ConnectionString = sConDB cnnTest.Open
End Sub Instead of using an access database,I am using SQL server database,so my question is:what's the code for connecting VB6 form to SQL server database? Thanks for your help
HI i have 2 computers in my home names PC1,PC2 . i have database sql server 2000 in pc1 named Books , i want to connect to this database from pc2 . note : i am used visual basic.net 2003 if any one have books or articales about this subject please i want help quickly
VB.NET. I'm getting this error: Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
I don't have a username and a password setup for my server connection. I tried changing the Security properties to Windows & SQL and Windows authenciation and I'm still getting this error. Am I suppose to set up a username and password for my server? If so how? Thanks
Also a quick side question, how do I make the primary key auto increment through Enterprise Manager?
I am trying out a simple ASP.NET application which includes access to an SQL Server Database. It works fine on my local machine when I connect to the SQL Server and use SQL commands (via C#) to access it. But my web hosting provider uses ODBC drivers for database access (they support the SQL database type). I would like to find out how I should connect to my SQL Server database and program the access in order for it to be ODBC compatible, so that I can deploy it to my web hosting server. I should also mention that I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition. Thanks for any help or pointers. Kumar

Hi, I am working through "Sams Teach Yourself ASP Dot NET 2.0 in 24 Hours" I am upto hour 20 where it says Configuring an ASP.NET Website to Support Membership To configure our website to support membership, we must launch the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool. To accomplish this, either click the ASP.NET Configuration icon at the top of the Solution Explorer or click the Website menu's ASP.NET Configuration option. Either way will open a web browser pointed to a page through which the ASP.NET site can be configured. Figure 20.1 shows the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool. To add user account support, click the Security link. This will take you to the Security screen shown in Figure 20.2. From this screen, you can specify the user accounts in your system, what roles for users exist, and the access rules for users. However when I click security I get the following error message; "There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store." "The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database." If I test the provider I get this error; "Provider Management""Could not establish a connection to the database.""If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider." I am using MS VWD Express with MS SQL Express. I have run the 'aspnet_regsql' tool on my database which the book fails to mention and verified that the tables were created correctly. I have tried copying the MDF file directly into my 'app_data' directory but this made no difference. I have googled these errors and nothing seems to help. I can connect to the database through a 'SqlDataSource' and have had no trouble with the database in the previous sections of the book. I think it may have something to do with how I setup SQL Express or database permissions, I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance. The above was what I get whenever I tried connecting to SQL Server database. I've got Windows XP Pro SP2, IIS 5.1, and is currently using Visual Web Developer.
How do I rectify my problem of connecting to an SQL Server?
Is there a way to connect to another server in a TSQL script. I would assume that there would be but, I must be missing it somewhere. I found the ESQL CONNECT TO function but, can't seem to get that working either. Any help (even telling me it's not possible) would be appreciated.
I am trying to connect to SQL 7.0 northwind database via visual studio2005. But I can't open the connection. I get an error saying remoteaccess is not allowed. But the remote access is ok. hi I am trying to do create two SQLExpress connections (via sqlexpress instances) in two different machines through (ArcCatalog) a GIS software. I am able to connect to Server B(per say) from Server A but I am not able to connect to Server A from B. A and B are in differnet machines. Are there any setting in A which i am missing to enable so that A doesnt allow any connections to it. I checked the Protocols for SQLExpress and TCP/IP is enabled. any help is appreciated!!
I am a beginner on using SQL Server Express. I have two different questions. Here is the first:
I've developed a simple C# application in Visual Studio 2005 that connects to a SQL Server database file. In the application I connect to the database using this connection string:
This is the error message I get when I try to open the database
The file \myserverDatabasesmyDatabase.mdf is on a network path that is not supported for database files. An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file \myServerDatabasesmyDatabase.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
Both computer runs Windows XP SP2.
My second question is:
When I deployed my solution to my production PC(witch also runs Windows XP SP2, .NET Framwork 2.0 is installed on the computer) .When I then tried to run the application I did get this error message
An error has occured when establishing a connection to the server. When connection to a SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remomte conections.....
Appearently I cant treat SQL Server database files in the same way as Access-files, or?
I have installed SQL Express 2005 on a Windows 2003 server. I am able to connect when I use "SQL Server Management Studio Express" However when i try the command: sqlcmd -S 127.0.0.1 i got the following error message:
"C:Documents and Settingsadm>sqlcmd -S 127.0.0.1 HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1 Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
