Hi there,
Has anyone ever encountered problems making .Net applications connect to a SQL database on SQL 2000 with SP3a?
It's running on a virtual machine with a Windows Server 2000 Std with SP4, the .Net application is working with .Net Framework 1.1.4322.573. For some reason it can't connect to the SQL database using the specified username and password in the web.config file even though the user exists in the SQL database. I've tried using the SA password but this still doesn't work. I can logon to SQL Query Analyzer using the SA password but not using the other username.
The .Net application does work on other systems of mine all of which can run on Windows Server 2000 and 2003, I have compared them but can't find any differences.
Any ideas anybody?
Thanks,
Chris

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me answer this question.
If I had a site like Yahoo, that constantly had users accessing it. Would it be a good or bad idea to automatically open a database connection to SQL Server on Application Start? What would you recommend? Would opening and closing the DB connection on every page save alot of overhead and bottleneck? Thank You.

Hi all,
I think I can do this, just want to check
Can I have an sql server database (mdf file) on a server and allow windows applications at different site manipulate the database.
As far as I am concerned the only thing that needs to be configued is the connection string..is this correct.
[i would rather use windows applications rather than asp pages]
If I can, the best way to manipulate the database is to use stored procedures. How would I do the following to create and execute the following proposed procedure:
Insert data into a table
Update another table as a result
Execute the store procedure on a form to execute these two statements
Thanks in advance
Peter

Hi all, I was just wonder what the normal memory consumption is when just simply making a connection to a database. I have an application that starts, and when it connects the to a database, it eats up around a 1.5 MB, yes I keep the connection open for the life of the application (as its in a kinda global class, and when database reads/writes are performed I just get the open connection object) - I don't run any queries against the database here, just connect.
Is this a normal amount of memory to consume on a simple connection to a database?

Dear members,I'am thinking about the "best" way to connect to my sql-server viaADO.Net (if there is a best way).My application uses the sql-server very intensively. At the momentevery database-operation opens a connection, executes and then closesthe connection.Another way would be to use only a single connection to the database,which is opened when the application starts.What do you think is the better way to get a high performing sqlserver: using one single application connection vs. using oneconnection for every operation?Cheers, Sebastian

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Is this an intrinsic issue?

Hey anyone,
I got a problem to check a connection whether it is established or not from my C# Application to SQL Server.
I am developing my application which can run in 2 modes:
1. Online: There must be a connection to SQL Server to get new data updates.
2. Offline: I dont need a connection to SQL Server. I set a timer to tick every 5 seconds and it will check the connection with SQL Server and my problem here: (this is my code)1 public static bool checkConnection()
2 {
3 SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection("mydatasource");
4 try
5 {
6 conn.Open();
7 return true;
8 }
9 catch (Exception ex) { return false; }
10 }
Yes, it works but my application seems to wait about >3 seconds to get the return "False"; I tried to add "Connect TimeOut=1" in my Connection String, but the problem is still there.
I dont know whether there is a faster way to check the connection to SQL server which is established or not.
Thank you very much,
Joesy

I have application that is connecting to SQL Server and runs bunch of stored procedures, but I don't think that am able to connect to my database server. When it hits the line to execute the stored procedure it comes up with syntax error saying the syntax error is at the stored procedure. I know how to set up the connection string with web app from the web config, but never done it on an app. Here is the connection string pointing to my server which I pass to my SqlConnection object: Hi,
I'm testing the use of application roles for security. The customer I work for has still a lot of ASP intranet applications running. We're migrating the databases to a SQL Server 2005 server.
I've changed the connection string to a user without any permissions but to log on. After that I use an application role for permission to select different tables and to execute Stored Procedures.
The first queries do execute but after that I get "Permission denied", like I haven't got the application role anymore.
Any ideas?
Adrian

Is there a way that SQL can automatically look at each users'connection and make sure it is still connected through the third partyapplication? The problem is that when a connection to this applicationis not terminated properly, the SQL server is not notified of thedisconnect and the user cannot log back into the application until allthe processes are completed and the original session terminated.Thank you.

I have a VB6 application that has MSDE as its current backend. In
testing moving to SLSQLExpress I've noticed, since this application is run on laptops, that if I disconnect the network cable while I'm in the VB6 app I lose "connection" to the database. If I end task on the app and restart it it works fine. If I reconnect the network cable while the app is running and then disconnect it the app runs fine. Also this happens when I'm connected to a wireless network and then disconnect and disable that connection.
In my template.ini file I have DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0. Is there a setting I'm missing? I can't seem to find anything else to set in the ini file.

Hey everyone, I'm new to .NET and I've recently inheirited a rather large and busy asp.net website. I was asked to add a testimonials section on each page that will randomly pull a testimonial out of the db. This is fine, however, I'm getting random errors about the DB connection either being closed or connecting. Here is the code for the testimonials class: 1 public SqlDataReader GetTestimonials(ref SqlDataReader reader, int iCatID, string sLanguageType)2 {3 SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("sp_DVX_Testimonials_Fetch", Connection);4 cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;5
6 cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@Cat_ID", iCatID));7 cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@LanguageType", sLanguageType));8
9 reader = cmd.ExecuteReader();10
11 return reader;12 } I know this isn't the best way to do this (especially for each page[this site averages about 1000 hits a day]), so I was wondering was--is there a way to maintain a single DB connection that's set up in the Application_Start that will maintain the connection so I don't have to worry about this error. If not, does anyone and any ideas as to what would help? Thanks in advance!

And we use windows auth to do development
So when we do that we logon to wuindows, and then just connect, with no password required
But how does an application "logon" to connect to a database
Is it just in the connection string just like sql server auth
or is it different?

All:
I am writing an Internet/Extranet based (ASP.Net 2.0) web application that uses SQL server 2005 as the database. I am using forms authentication on my web application. I am also storing the connection string to SQL server in my web config file. The conn string is encrypted using DPAPI with entropy. I currently have created a SQL login account on my SQL server for use by the web application. This is the user ID I am using in my conn string. The reason for this is because all persons using the application will NOT have a windows login.
Here is my question: The login I created currently has defaulted to the "dbo" role and therefore has "dbo" rights to the database. I want to setup up this login account so that all it can do is execute stored procedures. I dont want this SQL login to be able to do anything else. In my application I am using stored procedures for ALL data access functions, via a data access layer in my application. Can someone guide me step by step as to how to setup this type of access for this SQL login.
Thanks,
Blue.

I am running multiple instance of the same application. This application is connecting to the database and running stored procedures using ADODB (all code examples are taken from msado15).
The problem is that somehow these two applications are sharing something either with the connection or commands.
For instance if the two instances are in the following function at the same time then they both thow an SEH exception:
Code Snippet
inline _RecordsetPtr Command15::Execute ( VARIANT * RecordsAffected, VARIANT * Parameters, long Options ) {
struct _Recordset * _result = 0;
HRESULT _hr = raw_Execute(RecordsAffected, Parameters, Options, &_result);
if (FAILED(_hr)) _com_issue_errorex(_hr, this, __uuidof(this));
return _RecordsetPtr(_result, false);
}
The exception that occurs is: "First-chance exception ...: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000068."
And afterwords when they go to release the command an error occurs on
First-chance exception at 0x4de4120c in IpsEngine.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xcccccccc.
Code Snippet
inline void _bstr_t::Data_t::_Free() throw()
{
if (m_wstr != NULL) {
::SysFreeString(m_wstr);
}
if (m_str != NULL) {
delete [] m_str;
}
}
This is being called from.
Code Snippet
inline void Command15::PutRefActiveConnection ( struct _Connection * ppvObject ) {
HRESULT _hr = putref_ActiveConnection(ppvObject);
if (FAILED(_hr)) _com_issue_errorex(_hr, this, __uuidof(this));
}
The exception that occurs: First-chance exception at ...: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xcccccccc.
Similarly when one instance releases a command using
Code Snippet
inline void Command15::PutRefActiveConnection ( struct _Connection * ppvObject ) {
HRESULT _hr = putref_ActiveConnection(ppvObject);
if (FAILED(_hr)) _com_issue_errorex(_hr, this, __uuidof(this));
}
The second instance of the application fails when running the command at the exact same time.
Code Snippet
inline _RecordsetPtr Command15::Execute ( VARIANT * RecordsAffected, VARIANT * Parameters, long Options ) {
struct _Recordset * _result = 0;
HRESULT _hr = raw_Execute(RecordsAffected, Parameters, Options, &_result);
if (FAILED(_hr)) _com_issue_errorex(_hr, this, __uuidof(this));
return _RecordsetPtr(_result, false);
}
The command and connections are not static and there should be completely seperate instances of these for each instance of the application. Does anybody know why this may be happening. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I'm writing an application with Visual Studio 2005 (Visual Basic .NET 2.0) which uses a SQL Compact Edition 3.5 database. On my HTC Touch with Windows Mobile 6.1 installed the application crashes, without any error message, if I try to open a connection. But...On the Windows Mobile 6 Pro emulator the connection opens normaly. The whole application runs perfect.
On both "devices" are the same dll's, of version 3.5.0.0.
I'm using the following code to open the connection:
Code Snippet
Private mySQLce_strConnection As String = "Data Source ='" & App_Path() & "MControl_SQLce.sdf" & "';"
Dim localConnection As New SqlCeConnection(mySQLce_strConnection)
localConnection.Open()
I tried so many things but without any success. But...I'm able to open the database (MControl_SQLce.sdf) with the Query Analyzer 3.5 on the Mobile. No problem.
This is my configuration:
Dev PC:
Windows XP SP2
Visual Studio 2005 Pro
.NET Framework 2.0 SP1
.NET Compact Framework 2.0
SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 (this version I reference to in my VS project)
Mobile Device (HTC Touch):
Windows Mobile 6.1
SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5
Any suggestions? I can't figure this out.

My application supports a single database connection and in the app console I can produce reports. If I include the app database in an AlwaysOn availability group with a read-intent replica will SQL automatically route the “selects” to that second instance thus offloading my application’s reporting activities or I need a separate db connection (maybe from a reporting app or cli) with a connection specifying read-only intent?

issues with triggers in Sql Server 2014.
A few weeks ago I've done a SQL Server migration from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2014.It was a bit tricky but anything worked fine.
I have some legacy VB6 (Visual Basic 6) applications written in house which worked with Databases on the old SQL server 2000.Surprisingly, these applications worked well after the upgrade to SQL Server 2014 without having to change a piece of code.
Now, some users tell me that they receive some unusual message when saving data from these legacy applications.After investing for a few hours, I discovered that triggers are not executed when those users try to save data from grids or forms in their applications.Trying to reproduce the INSERT statement in SQL Server Management Studio, the triggers run well.From the application, they don't.
These applications connect to Database Server thru OLEDB connection with the following ADO connection string :
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Password={password};User ID={user};Initial Catalog={db};Data Source={datasource}.the {user} is a true SQL account who have read/write/delete access in the databases.
On the web there is a lot of questions involving the same issue, but only from SSIS.I found some articles about an OLEDB connection parameter named FastLoadOptions with a value of FIRE_TRIGGERS, but nowhere how to put it in the ADO OLEDB connection string.
how to reactivate the "normal" use of triggers from an ADO OLEDB connection ?Either with some obscur parameter in the connection string or options somewhere in the SQL Server 2014.

Hi there,I sincerely hope that someone out there can help. I have twoinstances of the SQL 2000 Desktop Engine running. One is on my localmachine for development and the other is on another machine on ournetwork which is the production environment. I have built an Access2003 front end application which connects to this database. Thisworks fine locally, as you would expect. I successfully installed thedatabase on the production machine and am able to connect to it viaAccess 2003 (using the Data Link Properties window) and from thirdparty database manager software (similar to Enterprise Manager). I amnot able to to connect to the database via my application.I am using the "sa" account with a strong password. This is myconnection string:strConnection = "Provider=sqloledb;DataSource=server02;UserId=sa;Password=strong;Initial Catalog=Test"The error I'm getting is:"Connection cannot be used to perform this operation. It is eitherclosed or invalid in this context."The connection string is the only thing that changes in my code when Iswitch from my local to my production database. Is there some reasonthat I can't use the "sa" account in this fashion that I'm not awareof? I'd rather not use integrated security for simplicity's sake asthis is a small, internal application. Also, I would have thoughtthat if that was the issue, I couldn't use "sa" at all, even locally.I'm going to post to the Access group as well but thought someone heremight have some advice to offer as well.Thanks,Barb

Hi
I have SQL Server 2000 (SP4) running on an Windows 2003 SP 1 server. I have started to get the error message "Connection to application object failed - Ensure no program modules have been deleted" when I go into Enterprise Manager.
I have tried reinstalled SQL Server and applied SP4 but to no effect. Can anyone help?
