Connection String With Authenticated User Info
Jul 6, 2006
Hi. New to ASP.NET and first time posting.
My web app connects to a SQL database - SQL authentication.
Users login to the web app through the login server control. Once authenticated, it is my understanding that the user name and password are stored on the client as a cookie.
How do you programmatically get this user info and use it for the userid and password parameters of the connection string?
Is there a better way to use the authenticated user info to access a SQL database?
Thanks

Hello,
We have a new production server with SQLserver 2005.
Our department responsible ofr the installation made it as secure as possible, however.
I have to put a new backup on to the server from the old production server.
We ran into a problem when we removed the old database.
I could not longer logon to the server with an authenticated user.
"A connection was successfully established with the server, but an error occured during the login process"
"Shared memory provider : error 0 : No process is on the other end of the pipe"
Strange thing is when i create a new database with the same name. The user can logon to the server again.
Any idea's ?

I have an ASP.NET 2 external application that is using and mix of the web services and tables/sps available from my 2005 SSRS.
I want to add an authenticated user from the external application. I don't see a web service that will do this. I have been through the SP's and can create roles, authenticated users, policies etc. But I think I need to update the XmlDescription field in the SecData table.
Do I need to build this XML string from scratch or is there a function / sp / web service that will do this. XML is a long ways from my strong suit.
Or am I just crazy and I should redirect my users to the Security tab!
Any help or advise would be appreciated.

I was able to do this on a Windows XP machine but I am not able to get this to work on a Windows 2003 Server machine.
I am connecting to the Windows 2003 Server and MS SQL Express via remote desktop on the lan.
This is what worked for me before:
EXEC sp_grantlogin '4800X2ASPNET'
USE MyDB
EXEC sp_grantdbaccess '4800X2ASPNET'
EXEC sp_addrolemember 'db_owner', '4800X2ASPNET'
But for some reason now I am getting this error:
Msg 15401, Level 11, State 1, Procedure sp_grantlogin, Line 49
Windows NT user or group '4800X2ASPNET' not found. Check the name again.
Msg 15401, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Windows NT user or group '4800X2ASPNET' not found. Check the name again.
Msg 15410, Level 11, State 1, Procedure sp_addrolemember, Line 75
User or role '4800X2ASPNET' does not exist in this database.
I thought what I needed to add was the name of this pc that will connect remotely, but that doesn't seem to be working.
What weird is the old copy of this query I used had the local pc as the computer name. If I exchange the computer name from the remote pc name to the local 2003 Server machine name, the query works fine. Although that still doesn't let me add connections via Web Developer Express without error. It doesn't make sense to me anyhows, how could I have used the local machine's name and not the remote machine's name to get this to work previously. So confused.
Thank you in advance for help.

I have a 3rd party dashboard application that I can only use SQL authenticated logins to connect to the database.
I'm trying to create a query within the application that will directly access an excel file through a linked server.
As a test, I login to SSMS as the sql auth user to run the linked server query below but the following error is returned:
select *
from Corporate...[Sheet1$]OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "Corporate" returned message "Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user.".
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "Corporate" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "Corporate".
When I login as a Windows auth user, I can successfully run the above query.
I noticed within the linked server's security definition that I cannot specify a windows auth user as the mapped Remote User or as the Remote login
I've tried creating a Credential object with the identity of the windows user and assign that object to the sql auth user but to no avail. I still get the same error
I am using SQL Server express so the option of an automated server agent job to import the excel file is not available.
Details:
SQL Server Express 2012
Office version: Excel 10
Provider: Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0

Is there a way to find out my user id and password that should be used in my connection string? If I can not find this information out for myself, do I need to go to some type of system administrator.
Here is the connection string in my web.config file.
<connectionStrings>
<add name="SPK" connectionString="Server=localhost; User ID=AppUser;Password=meander;Database=atstdb01;
Persist Security Info=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
</connectionStrings>
When I access this connection string via my code, A little dialog box pops up with the following error message:
Login failed for user AppUser. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

I’m working with a team of programmers who are in the process of upgrading an older ASP application to ASP.NET 2.0 (VB). The existing application connects to the SQL Server Database using different Logins, depending on the User logged into the ASP Application.
We are hoping to do the same using ASP.NET 2.0, although we haven’t been able to find a simple solution. The most feasible solution we have found includes programmatically trapping all the Selecting etc events and changing the SqlConnection at run time. This allow for ease during Designing of the Web Pages, but implementation requires adding code to each web page (>100 pages).
We are hoping there may be a simple solution which can be implemented once for the application where the event can be trapped at the application level, and the SqlConnection set at this point. Or possibly another type of solution such as creating a new class etc that can be used?
Does anyone have a simple solution where the username / password for the Database Connection can be set at run time?

Whenever I use "User Instance=True" as in the connection string below, I get an invalid connection string error. If I take it out, the connection string generates other errors.
"Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;User Instance=True;AttachDBFileName=|DataDirectory|DbName.mdf;Data Source=.\sqlexpress;"
Removing User Instance=True always eliminates the invalid connection string message.
BTW, I tried both Data Source=.\sqlexpress and Data Source=.sqlexpress.

I'm trying to setup a dynamic ole db connection using the SA user ID, it has to be dynamic because the server name will change and it has to be SA because we're pulling information from system databases that some users don't have access to.
If I setup a regular static connection using SA credentials it works like a charm of course. When I create an expression to use the User:erver variable it doesn't work, it throws an error message saying that "The login failed for user sa" among other things, I'm thiking that the sa's password is not being saved.
Where exactly do I place a password for dynamic connections using sql server users? On the connection string? On the password property of the source? Any ideas?

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Is this an intrinsic issue?

I wrote this query to pull some information involving 3 tables dbo.NewFamNbrs$, dbo.CGIItemMaster and dbo.CGIFamilyMaster. In addition I want to perform an update statement to update column dbo.CGIItemMaster.FamilyIDX with the information of dbo.CGIFamilyMaster.IDX. I also know that truncation is indicating that I'm trying to insert data into a field not large enough. So I performed a len() function on the both columns and order by desc and they both came up with 4 as being the max.
Query:
SELECT a.PART, a.Family, b.FamilyIDX, c.FamilyID, c.IDX
FROM dbo.NewFamNbrs$ a LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.CGIFamilyMaster c ON a.Family = c.FamilyID LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.CGIItemMaster b ON a.PART = b.PART
Results of query:
PART Family FamilyIDX FamilyID IDX
000127233TF011468 TF01 506
000129880TF011468 TF01 506
003110 MET061468 MET06 1915
UPDATE STATEMENT:
begin tran
update dbo.CGIItemMaster
set FamilyIDX=c.IDX
FROM dbo.NewFamNbrs$ a LEFT OUTER JOIN
CGIFamilyMaster c ON a.Family = c.FamilyID LEFT OUTER JOIN
dbo.CGIItemMaster b ON a.PART = b.PART

I've just written a query that successfully brings back the data from one table based on the information from another. Basically we have been given a table of information and need to update certain fields in our user_group table with the new info.
Here is the SELECT statement
SELECT user_group.id, user_group.name, user_group.description, Consultants.description AS Expr10, user_group.btype, user_group.rootmenu,
user_group.intra_user, user_group.primary_g_id, user_group.fname, user_group.lname, user_group.ntlogon, user_group.lang_id,
user_group.[external], user_group.title, user_group.work_tel, user_group.work_fax, user_group.work_ext, user_group.mobile, user_group.sex,
user_group.add2, user_group.add3, user_group.town, user_group.county, user_group.pcode, user_group.private_flag,
[code]....
We want to update the 'description' on the user_group table with the 'description' from the 'consultants' table. To test this, we only want to write the UPDATE so that it changes the description where the name is 'Adam Froth. The UPDATE statement that we've written is
UPDATE user_group
SET user_group.description = Consultants.description
FROM user_group
INNER JOIN Consultants
ON user_group.description = consultants.description
WHERE name like 'Adam Froth%'
but it keeps erroring and saying that it could 'Not be bound'.

Hi All
€™m just starting out with SSIS and am trying to establish architecture standards that are sound and workable. We will be developing BI solutions for customers who use our banking and finance package that runs on an IBM System i. Modularity is important as all our BI solutions will have a combination of re-used functionality along with varying degrees of unique functionality for each customer. My current area of interest is in externalizing all environmental factors and ensuring such things as passwords are protected.
I understand how configuration files work and how to use environment variables to provide a layer of indirection to them. At this stage we want to avoid encryption of packages and plan to use file system based deployment. We plan to use windows security for SQL server so I have no issue in exposing connection info here but for our DB2 connections we need to include user id and passwords. As I understand it, configuration files can not be encrypted so how do I store this externally while preserving its security. Nothing I have read so far has given me exactly what I need.

Hi All,
I'm new to SSIS. I'm trying to build a simple package, run it on dev and migrate it to our stg and tst environments. It works on my dev environment great! It simply loads data from a flat file into a table. The trouble i'm having is exporting the connection string info to an xml file and runnign it on other environments. I am not storing the package on the db. I am saving to a file and running through SQL Server BI Development Studio.
I go to "Configuration File" and export InitialCatalog, ServerName, User, Password to the file. I can manually change the xml to the new environment but don't know how to set the password. It's not in the xml and i am constantly getting "Login failed for 'sa'" errors. Anyone know how to do this. I CAN get this whole process to work if i use Windows authentication security but this isn't an option. I need to use the db security.
Thanks,
Dave

Hello All,
I am trying to convert an application created using DTS classes to SSIS object model. I have found following code in the application.
For x As Integer = 1 To mTask.Properties.Count
If mTask.Properties.Item(x).Name = "SourceConnectionID" Then
CnID = mTask.Properties.Item(x).Value
Exit For
End If
Next
For x As Integer = 1 To mPkg.DTSPackage.Connections.Count
If mPkg.DTSPackage.Connections.Item(x).ID = CnID Then
Return mPkg.DTSPackage.Connections.Item(x).Name
End If
Next
Return mTask.Properties.Item("SourceObjectName").Value
How can I retrieve or Set "SourceConnectinId", "SourceObjectName" of a data flow task in SSIS
Please help me to solve this problem.

I have a table with embedded files in it and also ftp server/user/pwd fields so that each record has all the data and information required and need to configure an SSIS package to to FTP them to the destination as specified in the record within the databaseAt the moment I have a data flow task which uses a Derived Column and an Export Column transformation which creates the files to a temp folder then it runs a ForEach loop container back on the control flow to FTP each file and to then move each file to an archive folder.
All I think I need to know how to do is to somehow control the FTP connection settings with the fields from the database within this foreach loop, but it is a for each file collection. I also need to update each record saying it has been FTP'd as well
Do I need to have an initial query outside of this foreach loop to populate an array which can be used for the 4 FTP connection fields (server/user/pwd/directory), if so how?
Any ideas as to how to correctly finish this package.
Thanks

I have deployed to production a number of nested packages (parent packages that call child packages) to the SQL msdb via the Save As option rather than building a deployment utility. These packages reference configuration files in a static location off of the c: drive on the production server. In the development environment, when connection changes are made and I run the Reload with Upgrade option the connection manager takes on the new server and user id settings. However, out on the production side I get the following error from the SQL job log:
Cannot load the XML configuration file. The XML configuration file may be malformed or not valid.
As a result the SQL job uses the default connection information which references the development database rather than the production database. I did research the error but found no good solutions. Is there a way to ensure the configuration files are formed correctly and that the packages are correctly referencing the configuration files? We are trying to run the ETL updates via a SQL job.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".
To try to understand where the problem is located,I built a very simple application without login controls and put on it one Detailform accessing a single line table "Signin". I continually get the error message I got with my real app :"The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty. " There is only one connection string in my app -'PINEMgtConnectionString2'. When I run the app locally on my machine it works. After I move everything to Go Daddy, I get the error message and the following dump"
Line 24: </Fields>
Line 25: </aspetailsView>
Line 26: <aspqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStringsINEMgtConnectionString2 %>"
Line 27: InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Signup(first_name, last_name, email, customer_id) VALUES (,,,)"
Line 28: SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Signup]"></aspqlDataSource>
This is indeed the code from my single page app.
The dump is:
[InvalidOperationException: The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty.]

After Googleing, asking Go Daddy for info (which they dont give) , etc for three weeks, I need serious mental help
in the form of a solution of this problem. Your help with the problem or the name of a good mental health professional in eastern N.C. (maybe both) would be appreciated.
