Convert Dynamically Generated Parameters List Into Stored Proc
Mar 17, 2006
I have the following ASP code that builds part of the example SQL statement below (it's the same SQL as in my earlier thread here (http://www.dbforums.com/showthread.php?t=1214044) but a very different question):

I want to turn this SQL into a stored proc; there are currently about 8 parameters that I want to pass into it. The field value for each will be either NULL or a positive integer, and the paramater will be passed in as an integer.
If the passed parameter value is a positive integer then it should return all records where the corresponding field value matches that integer. If the passed parameter is 0, it should return all rows regardless of whether the field value is an integer or NULL.
And I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it. Do I need an IF statement in there or something?

All of these dates are based on the update of our data warehouse. This stored procedure runs a 5 step process and produces data for 8 - 10 monthly reports.
I was wondering if these variables can be updated dynamically and if they can how it is done.
hii I have a problem in when i pass xml as input to stored procedure. The problem i m facing is that : Say i have a table which has id as primary key in it.Now in my sp i want to delete some rows from that table and in xml i am passin more than 1 id ( it can be four even). But before deleteion i want to check that delete the with that ID iff the ID exists else raise error for the id w/c does not exist like 'This Id does not exist.' what i want is to loop between the id's which are being passed as i/p to sp.. and delete the row if it exists elso diaplsy message this id does not exist.. somewhat like this
If Exists(Select ProfileName From Area52 Where Area52ID in
I am using this sql script to achieve paging functionality for a site. IT works great for the most part, except when I need to return a result set that includes other tables.
How can I add another parameter to this to allow joined table to be a paramter? I'd like to pass in the join table name and columns to join on, or a custom select statement I guess?
CREATE PROCEDURE GetSortedPage( @TableName VARCHAR(50), @PrimaryKey VARCHAR(25), @SortField VARCHAR(100), @PageSize INT, @PageIndex INT = 1, @QueryFilter VARCHAR(100) = NULL ) AS SET NOCOUNT ON

Title speaks for itself really. Is it possible to write a stored proc with optional parameters? For example consider the following SELECT
SELECT FLD1, FLD2 FLD3 FROM TBL1
I'd like to add optional parameters to that statement so that if they wanted to narrow down the results by providing criteria for some fields they could - but didn't have to.
If a procedure is known but all parameters are not known, can I handle this using CommandBehavior.RetrieveParameters. If yes, do I need to incur an extra round trip to server.
I have created a stored proc for a report, which works fine. I want to have the user enter a project ID to filter the report, so set the stored proc accordingly. However, I want the user to enter a 10 digit ID, which is the equivilent of two fields in the stored proc. My where statement is :
Where actv.ProjID + '-' + actv.Activity = @project
This works fine under the data tab, I can enter a full project and get the results I want. But I cannot preview the report without getting an error. I'm not sure how to add this to the report parameters, as it is two fields concatenated together. Any help would be appreciated!
I have a stored procedure that updates about a dozen rows.
I have some overloaded functions that I should update different combinations of the rows - 1 function might update 3 rows, another 7 rows.
Do I have to write a stored procedure for each function or I can I handle it in the Stored Procedure. I realise I can have default values but I the default values could overwrite actual data if the values are not supplied but have been previously written.
Interestingly enough, I haven't come across this before. I have a SQL stored procedure which takes four parameters; periodstartdate (datetime), periodenddate (end time), hsgradyearstart (int), hsgradyearend (int)
[dbo].[CalculateActivityTotal]
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@periodstartdate datetime = '2007-01-01',
@periodenddate datetime = '2007-01-08',
@hsgradyearstart int = 1900,
@hsgradyearend int = 2007 AS...
If I run the stored procedure and pass the parameters using EXEC or
the stored proc takes well over ten minutes to run (it does a bunch of aggregation). If I modify the stored procedure to take no parameters, however, and I hardcode the dates in the stored proc using declare and set then it runs in 13 seconds. What could be causing my problem and how I can I go about resolving this? I need to pass the parameters via reporting server. Thanks!
Hello, I have a number of multi-select parameters which I would like to send to a stored procedure within the dataset for use in the stored procedure's IN() statement which in turn is used to filter on or out particular rowsets.
I considered using a hidden string parameter set = " ' " + join(parameter.value, ',') + " ' " so that the hidden parameter would then contain a comma delimiated string of the values selected, which would then be sent on to the stored proc and used in the WHERE clause of one of the queries internal to the stored proc. But before I start dedicating time to do this I wanted to inquire if anyone here with far more expertise could think of a faster or less system heavy method of creating a single string of comma delimited parameter selections?
I am getting the following error when executing a CLR stored procedure. I have set generate serialization assembly to 'ON' with no effect. The error is:
System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot load dynamically generated serialization assembly. In some hosting environments assembly load functionality is restricted, consider using pre-generated serializer. Please see inner exception for more information. ---> System.IO.FileLoadException: LoadFrom(), LoadFile(), Load(byte[]) and LoadModule() have been disabled by the host.
I have a multiselect checkbox list in my UI. I pass the list items to my stored proc as comma separated parameter and then I have a function which converts this parameter to a table with separate rows.
E.g. : a,b,c,d
Converted to result table
result a b c d
I want to insert each row of the result table into another table. How to do that.
E.g., the table after the function is :
CREATE TABLE #result ( Subject varchar(100) )
insert into #result values ('a') insert into #result values ('b') insert into #result values ('c') insert into #result values ('d')
Hi, I have a script task in SSIS which dynamically generates a string for a file name to be used as flat file source. I execute the task and it executed with success; but when I checked the result of the variable TotFileName from the Expression builder window for the flat file connection manager it was not populated with a file name like \MyServerMyDriveMyFolder200706daily.txt. So something might still be missing from the script below. Or is the way I do it correct? Can someone help with this? Thanks a lot!!
I have created package level variables ImportFolder (value like: \MyServerMyDriveMyFolder ) and TotFileName (value field empty) and make ImportFolder a ReadOnlyVariable and TotFileName a ReadWriteVariable. Then I use expression to set the property for flat file connection manager to use the TotFileName variable.
(Basically the idea is: if now is July 2007 then the filename should be 200706daily.txt; if now is Jan 2008 then the filename should be 200712daily.txt)

In article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913668 it says to generate a serialization assembly and pop this into the database along side the assembly with the serialized type. All well and good, but how doe the XmlSerializer know to look in the database for the assembly - does it use the name of the assembly + XmlSerializer?
It is certainly ambiguous in the aforementioned kb article. In one place it generates an assembly in the database called
CREATE ASSEMBLY [MyTest.XmlSerializers] from 'C:CLRTestMyTestMyTestinDebugMyTest.XmlSerializers.dll' WITH permission_set = SAFE
and in another it uses
USE dbTest GO CREATE ASSEMBLY [MyTest] from 'C:CLRTestMyTest.dll' GO CREATE ASSEMBLY [MyTest.XmlSerializers.dll] from 'C:CLRTestMyTest.XmlSerializers.dll' GO
I can't get either to work, and I've tried various combinations, this and the fact that the kb artice uses two different naming conventions suggests to me that there must be "something else" which links the assembly with the serialization assembly.
I have an OLEDB source that uses a stored procedure which pivots records and returns me data with columns which are dynamic (Changing every time). How can I export this data with dynamic number of columns to excel destination?
I have below SQL. When I run it I get the 'Each GROUP BY expression must contain at least one column that is not an outer reference' error. The date and string expressions are generated dynamically and need to be grouped upon if possible. What am I missing?
INSERT INTO tblStaffPayrollHistory (StaffID, FromDate, ToDate, PayrollNo, EventID) SELECT DISTINCT tblStaffBookings.StaffID, CONVERT(DATETIME, '2015-05-17', 102), CONVERT(DATETIME, '2015-05-17', 102), 'tree', tblEvents.ID FROM tblStaffBookings INNER JOIN tblEvents ON tblStaffBookings.EventID = tblEvents.ID WHERE ... GROUP BY tblStaffBookings.StaffID, CONVERT(DATETIME, '2015-05-17', 102), CONVERT(DATETIME, '2015-05-17', 102), 'tree', tblEvents.ID
In the above code, the XML parser does not understand the Parameters element. I've also tried ReportParameters as the name of the element. I don't seem to understand why, because in the SQL data tab, Parameters is a subelement of DataSet. Why am I getting this error and how do I programmatically specify that I want a report created on the fly to have parameters?
Deserialization failed: The element 'DataSet' in namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2005/01/reportdefinition' has invalid child element 'Parameters' in namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2005/01/reportdefinition'. I know I can do a JOIN(parameter, "some seperator") and it will build me a list/string of all the values in the multiselect parameter.
However, I want to do the same thing with all the occurances of a field in my result set (each row being an occurance).
For example say I have a form that is being printed which will pull in all the medications a patient is currently listed as having perscriptions for. I want to return all those values (say 8) and display them on a single line (or wrap onto additional lines as needed).
Something like: List of current perscriptions: Allegra, Allegra-D, Clariton, Nasalcort, Sudafed, Zantac
How can I accomplish this?
I was playing with the list box, but that only lets me repeat on a new line, I couldn't find any way to get it to repeate side by side (repeat left to right instead of top to bottom). I played with the orientation options, but that really just lets me adjust how multiple columns are displayed as best I can tell.
Could a custom function of some sort be written to take all the values and spit them out one by one into a comma seperated string?
I am working with a large application and am trying to track down a bug. I believe an error that occurs in the stored procedure isbubbling back up to the application and is causing the application not to run. Don't ask why, but we do not have some of the sourcecode that was used to build the application, so I am not able to trace into the code. So basically I want to examine the stored procedure. If I run the stored procedure through Query Analyzer, I get the following error message: Msg 2758, Level 16, State 1, Procedure GetPortalSettings, Line 74RAISERROR could not locate entry for error 60002 in sysmessages. (1 row(s) affected) (1 row(s) affected) I don't know if the error message is sufficient enough to cause the application from not running? Does anyone know? If the RAISERROR occursmdiway through the stored procedure, does the stored procedure terminate execution? Also, Is there a way to trace into a stored procedure through Query Analyzer? -------------------------------------------As a side note, below is a small portion of my stored proc where the error is being raised: SELECT @PortalPermissionValue = isnull(max(PermissionValue),0)FROM Permission, PermissionType, #GroupsWHERE Permission.ResourceId = @PortalIdAND Permission.PartyId = #Groups.PartyIdAND Permission.PermissionTypeId = PermissionType.PermissionTypeId IF @PortalPermissionValue = 0BEGIN RAISERROR (60002, 16, 1) return -3END
Our clients working with the Firefox browser on a Mac are unable to use the Multi-Value parameter drop down lists that the Report Viewer control generates. Of course I realize that the multi-select dropdown lists are not really dropdown option lists using the standard HTML select tag, but are rather tables within div tags with cells that contain spans, inputs, and labels.
Originally the report viewer displayed these lists in the wrong position within Firefox on any platform (Mac or PC). Furthermore, there were other visibility problems with those lists that made it virtually impossible to select a checkbox within the list. Fortunately, Microsoft fixed this problem with the latest version of Report Viewer, which we downloaded from the following link: http://207.46.19.190/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cc96c246-61e5-4d9e-bb5f-416d75a1b9ef&displaylang=en
So currently we have SQL Reporting Services Report Viewer 9.0.21022.8 installed on our web server. And the dropdown lists do appear as expected, and they work properly in Firefox on a PC.
But, when the control is rendered in Firefox on a Mac, the list is not scrollable. The scroll bar that should appear on the right-hand side of the dropdown list, which would enable users to select values toward the bottom of the list, does not appear. That scrollbar is missing in Firefox.
This is likely related to a Firefox rendering issue with the overflow:auto style. There are numerous entries on the web that indicate Firefox for Mac has a problem with overflow:auto. For example: http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-96958.html http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread44144.html http://iamthewalr.us/blog/2007/04/20/firefox-on-the-mac/#comment-2321 http://www.errorforum.com/mozilla-firefox-error/3503-will-float-mac-firefox-scrollbars-floating-pop-up-windows.html https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?query_format=specific&order=relevance+desc&bug_status=__open__&id=187435
That being the case, it seems that there should be some workaround to address this, either via a style or through some alternate control. Or perhaps there is a property that we can apply to the ReportViewer control that I'm unaware of which addresses this.
If you know of a workaround, or can suggest an alternate approach that we could implement quickly, please respond. Thanks.
What I need?: A way of dynamically inserting a list in the WHERE clause of a query. (in the form, WHERE ID = 1,2,3,6,9 etc)
Imagine an example DB with 3 columns Student ID, Name, Teacher_ID. (Lets assume Teacher_ID with value 100 means its the Headmaster)
I need to create a list with Student ID's, who are directly/indirectly under the Headmaster. Example:
Headmaster Teacher 1 (ID 200) Teacher 2 (ID 250) Student 1 (ID 300) Director Teacher 4 Student 5
In the above example, since I only want those students/teachers under the headmaster, either directly/indirectly, my list would contain Teacher 1, Teacher 2, and Student 1. (In my case, just their ID's, so 200, 250, 300)
Director, Teacher 4 and Teacher 5 wouldnt be in the list since theyre not directly/indirectly Headmaster.
I have a requirement to load tables in the database from files on a shared server (lets say 50 tables from 50 files). I do not want to hardocde the file path anywhere in the package since this would mean changing 50 packages everytime the path changes (say when moving to to a diff server).
In SQL Server 2000, I used a .ini file to pass the path and used a Dynamic properties task to set run time variables. That way, evertime the path changes, I only had to change 1 ini file and all packages picked up the new path from it. How do I do this in SQL Server 2005 ?
Appreciate any assistance / suggestion in this regard.

I am having trouble executing a stored procedure on a remote server. On my local server, I have a linked server setup as follows: Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563
This works fine on my local server:
Select * From [Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563].DatabaseName.dbo.TableName
This does not work (Attempting to execute a remote stored proc named 'Data_Add':
When I attempt to run the above, I get the following error: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
Could anyone shed some light on what I need to do to get this to work?
Hi All,Quick question, I have always heard it best practice to check for exist, ifso, drop, then create the proc. I just wanted to know why that's a bestpractice. I am trying to put that theory in place at my work, but they areasking for a good reason to do this before actually implementing. All Icould think of was that so when you're creating a proc you won't get anerror if the procedure already exists, but doesn't it also have to do withCompilation and perhaps Execution. Does anyone have a good argument fordoing stored procs this way? All feedback is appreciated.TIA,~CK
i using a bound data grid which is using a stored proc. The stored proc needs the ClientID "if logged in" there is no form or control on the page outside of the loginstatus. I am wanting to pass the Membership.GetUser.ProviderUserKey.ToString() to the asp:parameter but I cant get it to work.So How do I pass a variable to a stored proc parameter using a bound data grid.I this its very strange that this cant be dont and there are a raft of reason why you wold want to do this with out the need to pass it to a form control.please helpjim
CancelSelectOnNullParameterHi,Suppose I have a SQLDataSource with a SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM STOCKS WHERE USER=@USER ORDER BY STOCK_NAME" and @USER is set as a session parameter. No problem till this part, but in some postbacks, I wish to add a new WHERE criteria to my SQL, so I do:DSSQL.SelectParameters.Add("@STOCK_NAME", "ABC123"); DSSQL.SelectCommand = DSgvStoklar.SelectCommand.Replace(" ORDER BY ", " AND STOCK_NAME LIKE @STOCK_NAME+'%' ORDER BY "); gridViewDS.DataBind(); and wish that my SelectCommand is modified and a new parameter is added. The SQL is modified, however -I guess- new parameter is not added, so I get "Must declare the scalar variable "@STOCK_NAME" error. How can I solve, any ideas?
I am creating the report and setting the datasource(dataset) dynamically to the report. I want to set the parameters also dynamically. am using Report Viewer to process the report.
When i set the parameters locally, i am getting the below error: An error occurred during local report processing
Here is my code: da = new SqlDataAdapter(strqry, conn); ds = new DataSet(); da.Fill(ds);
ReportDataSource ReportDataSourceX = new ReportDataSource(); ReportDataSourceX.Value = ds.Tables[0]; ReportParameter[] parm = new ReportParameter[2];
parm[0] = new ReportParameter("Business_Function", "SQMO"); parm[1] = new ReportParameter("Application", "ETMRS"); parm[0] = new ReportParameter("Owner", "Subbu"); //parm[0] = new ReportParameter("Business_Function", ds.Tables[0].Columns["Business_Function"].ToString()); //parm[1] = new ReportParameter("Application", ds.Tables[0].Columns["Application"].ToString()); //parm[0] = new ReportParameter("Owner", ds.Tables[0].Columns["Owner"].ToString());
I have an ASP that has been working fine for several months, but itsuddenly broke. I wonder if windows update has installed some securitypatch that is causing it.The problem is that I am calling a stored procedure via an ASP(classic, not .NET) , but nothing happens. The procedure doesn't work,and I don't get any error messages.I've tried dropping and re-creating the user and permissions, to noavail. If it was a permissions problem, there would be an errormessage. I trace the calls in Profiler, and it has no complaints. Thedatabase is getting the stored proc call.I finally got it to work again, but this is not a viable solution forour production environment:1. response.write the SQL call to the stored procedure from the ASPand copy the text to the clipboard.2. log in to QueryAnalyzer using the same user as used by the ASP.3. paste and run the SQL call to the stored proc in query analyzer.After I have done this, it not only works in Query Analyzer, but thenthe ASP works too. It continues to work, even after I reboot themachine. This is truly bizzare and has us stumped. My hunch is thatwindows update installed something that has created this issue, but Ihave not been able to track it down.
Hello, In the security GUI on a specific database, for a specific user, I am trying to 'remove' a proc from the list of securables. However, the 'remove' button is disabled when I select the proc to remove. There are no 'Explicit Permissions' selected for the proc.
I am a sysadmin on the server. Why cannot I not remove the proc from the list of securables for this database user?
