Convert With Character Field And Datetime

Hi,

I am getting a date string that is contained in a character field (char(20)).

An example of the data is as follows:

2005-09-20121315001

it is in the format YYYY-MM-DDHHMMSSMMM.

I want to insert this value into a datetime field. I have used convert, but can only insert it when I split out the time portion and separate them with a colon

i.e. to get it to insert into a datetime field the data has to be in the following format

2005-09-20 13:15:18.001

YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS.MMM

Is there a style parameter in the convert function that will allow me to insert this value without having to separate the hours/minutes/seconds with a colon? I have tried BOL but it seems that all the examples have colons in them where there is a time portion to the date,

Hi

I have column as month and value as January, february. etcc....

can we convert this character column into date&time format.. if we do that what will be output..

I am doing test instance, when i sort by month column it's sorted in alphabetical order. when we convert this into date&time, it's sorts by date&time, it puts me right direction..

i dont know can we do this or not..

Hi! I need to insert character data into a SQL 2005 table in the datetime format. The strings I need to convert are in the following format: ddmmyyyy

I tried using case and convert:

cast('08162006' as datetime))
convert(datetime,'08162006',101))

Both attempts fail with the following error:

The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I embedded a SQL query in excel that gets some datetime fields like "TASK_FINISH_DATE" .

How can I convert a datetime field to a date field in SQL in a way that excel will recognize it as a date type and not a text type?

I tried:
CONVERT(varchar(8),TASK_FINISH_DATE ,3)
CONVERT(Date,TASK_FINISH_DATE ,3)
CAST(TASK_FINISH_DATE as date)

**all of the above returned text objectes in excel and not date objects.

Convert DateTime Field

Hi,

I'm not entirely sure that this is the correct forum for this question but it relates to my SSIS package.

I am currently implementing an SSIS package to replace an existing stored procedure which is getting very unmanageable. I have come across a part in the stored procedure which performs a convert(datetime, @Parameter3, 14) on a string of data. The string value of @Parameter3 is in the following format HH:mm:ss.

The problem i am having is how to implement similar functionality in a script task. everything i have tried involving the datetime object returns 1,1,0001, 00:00:00 or similar. It never seems to get the time so that it can be passed to a datetime field in the database.

SQL Field Convert Nvarchar To Datetime

Hi everyone.

So as the subject says, I have a few fields that are nvarchar but hold date information. Most of these fields I have been able to move to datetime easiliy enough, simply by going into edit mode for the table and converting the fields to datetime. But 1 field is giving me problems I keep getting this error.
quote:- Unable to modify table.
Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime.
The statement has been terminated.

I really dont know why I'm getting this error, but I"m assuming it may have to be something like one of the records may not be in date format. But I don't know if this is the case and I don't know how to locate where my problem is coming from.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

I know there has to be a way to do this, but I've gone brain dead. Thescenario..a varchar field in a table contains a date range (i.e. June 1,2004 - June 15, 2004 or September 1, 2004 - September 30, 2004 or...). Theusers have decided thats a bad way to do this (!) so they want to split thatfield into two new fields. Everything before the space/dash ( -) goes intoa 'FromDate' field, everything after the dash/space goes into the 'ToDate'field. I've played around with STRING commands, but haven't stumbled on ityet. I am trying to access a date column up to millisecond precession. So I cast date to as follows:

Code BlockCONVERT(varchar(23),CREATE_DATE,121)

I get millisecond part as a result of query but it��s ��000�?.

When I try to test the format by using getDate instead of DateTime column I get right milliseconds.

CONVERT(varchar(23),GetDate(),121) --Gives right milliseconds in return

I am loading a flat file to a table but I also need to scrub the data a bit before the data hits the table. The main update required is converting a dot (.) character to a null value. The source file is using this character to indicate a blank. I know I can use the Dervived Column Transformation, but I have quite a few columns which will take a while to manually configure. Is there another transformation option that anyone can point me to?

How do i convert a varchar field into the datetime data type? the reason i need this lies in the requirement that in the earlier data base the column that is hlding the date value is having the data type as varchar. and in the new design the column data type is datetime. i am using sql scripts for the data migration from the older design to the newer and got stuck with this datetime convertion issue. do let me know the best possible solution.

following are the sample data that is theer in the older table for the date.

there is no uniformity of the data that is stored currently.

Converting Character Data To DATETIME

For our DataWarehouse, we get several date fields from our mainframe system in a character format. When this data was loaded into SQL Server 6.5 using the CONVERT(DATETIME...) function, any dates containing 'bad' data would simply be replaced by a NULL automatically by the DBMS. We are now going to SQL 7.0, and I have found that when it hits a bad date it terminates the stored procedure, resulting with no update.

Is there a straightforward way around this? Possibly a script that will scrub the data, replacing bad data with NULLs? I'm trying to avoid writing something that will take the number of days per month and determine if it is valid.

I need to pass in null/blank value in the date field or declare the field as string and convert date back to string.

I tried the 2nd option but I am having trouble converting the two digits of the recordset (rs_get_msp_info(2), 1, 2))) into a four digit yr. But it will only the yr in two digits.
The mfg_start_date is delcared as a string variable

mfg_start_date = CStr(CDate(Mid(rs_get_msp_info(2), 3, 2) & "/" & Mid(rs_get_msp_info(2), 5, 2) & "/" & Mid(rs_get_msp_info(2), 1, 2)))

Informix Date Type Field To SQL Server Datetime Field Error

I am trying to drag data from Informix to Sql Server. When I kick off the package
using an OLE DB Source and a SQL Server Destination, I get DT_DBDATE to DT_DBTIMESTAMP
errors on two fields from Informix which are date data ....no timestamp part

I tried a couple of things:

Created a view of the Informix table where I cast the date fields as datetime year to fraction(5), which failed.

Altered the view to convert the date fields to char(10) with the hopes that SQL Server would implicitly cast them
as datetime but it failed.

What options do I have that will work?

I am trying to create a report that sums up new cases weekly based on the previous 5 months. I have included some sample data below. The only field that displays a date is called monthSubmitted, varchar 7 and not very useful. How can I first convert this firld to a date ddmmyy?

How would you the code it so the user can run the report on demand at any given time and display the data for the last 5 months on a weekly basis? I am not sure as to how the date calculations should be coded.

Text file field value = 0000000242E (signed decimal)

DB column data type = decimal(11,2)

Probably one of the easiest queries some have seen around, but good ol' MS and their dates. I can't get around this error on this simple query. It will be a job that will run probably several times a day. I haven't even gotten passed to the second part of it....I've also seen this error is a VERY popular error, even with advanced programmers it seems. WOW. Basically, I want to keep the row count to 2 days. Well, if you have any suggestions, I'd take 'em. Thanks!

Convert Field From VarChar To Int With Speical Characters In Field

Hello,

I have a table with a column that is currently a varchar(50), but I want to convert it into an int. When I try to just change the type in design mode I get an error that conversion cannot proceed. When I look at the field it appears some of the entries have special characters appended at the end, I see a box after the value.

How can I remove all speical characters and then convert that field to an int?

Also I tried the following query which did not work as well, same error about conversion.

UPDATE myTable SET field = CAST(field AS int)
