Create A Synonym For A Table Object On Remote Server

I'm using SQL Server 2008R2. I am developing a database which requires access to data from other servers. So far I have been creating views using OPENQUERY (where there's a performance benefit) to select specifically the columns I want. Generally, for my purposes, I find these OPENQUERY based views to perform better (some times significantly so) to simple SELECT <COLUMNS> FROM <SERVER>.<DATABASE>.<SCHEMA>.<TABLE> WHERE <Where clause Statements> format views. My understanding is that this is because an OPENQUERY "pushes" the query processing to the remote server and simply returns the final result set to the local server i.e. there's no cross-server join/synchronization going on.
My question is, if I were to create a Synonym for a table object on the remote server, where does the processing happen if I query from this Synonym or create a join with this synonym to a table in my local database?Essentially, I am trying to understand if there are any "hidden gotcha's" primarily from a performance perspective, to using synonyms.

I need to get the object type (view, table ...etc) for a synonym base object inside a script. The only place where I see something related to this stored is in column "base_object_name" in sys.synonyms but there I can see only the same with format [database].[user/schema].[name]. After some testing playing with different users without specifying database/schema I think that maybe the object_id must be stored in a another place, my first idea was parent_object_id in sys.synonyms but it isn't stored there.
know if object_id for the base object is stored in any other place ?

A heavily-selected database will be in an inconsistent state for several hours during a batch process. For that time, a database snapshot is created and accessed instead. To allow constant client read access to the database, a database that only contains synonyms exists. Those synonyms point to the main database except during the batch process, at which time they point to the database snapshot.
To switch the synonyms, each synonym is dropped and then created pointing to the database snapshot (after its creation, of course). The drop/create occurs inside a transaction. Roughly, the SQL looks like this:

DROP SYNONYM [dbo].[some_proc];
CREATE SYNONYM [dbo].[some_proc] FOR [snapshot_db].[dbo].[some_proc];
GRANT EXECUTE, SELECT ON [dbo].[some_proc] TO public;
COMMIT TRANSACTION;
When the batch update is completed, the process is reversed with "snapshot_db" replaced with "regular_db". The SQL snippet above is dynamic SQL. What I've pasted is the dynamic SQL that is executed as a single batch.
While this switch is happening, clients are accessing the procedures through the synonyms, potentially at a high request rate. Testing reveals that clients can get the error:
Error=-2147217900, Id=0, Meaning=IDispatch error #3092,
Source=Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers,
Description=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Could not find stored procedure 'dbo.some_proc'.
This error only occurs once. If the same SPID retries its request and the transaction has not completed (for testing, a delay was added), then it blocks until the transaction completes.
Any way to prevent it besides a client-side retry?

I get an error in query analyzer when running (parsing query):

with an error of:
"Server: Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'PUBLIC'."

I'm trying to write a function that will retrieve the last backup date/time of a particular database on a remote server (i.e. by querying msdb.dbo.backupset). Unfortunately, you can't use sp_executesql in a function, so I can't figure out a way to pass the server name to the query and still be able to return the datetime value back to the calling TSQL code (so that rules out using EXEC().

I'd like to use a data flow task to load data into a table by specifying the synonym name of the destination table, instead of the actual table name.
The OLE DB Destination is forcing me to pick an actual table or view from a drop down list. Any ideas on how to get around this?

Just installed VS 2005 & SQLServer 2005 clients on my workstation. When trying to create a new Integration Services Project and start work in the designer receive the MICROSOFT VISUAL STUDIO 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object.' dialog box with message "Creating project 'Integration Services project1'...project creation failed."
Previously I had SQLServer 2000 client with the little VS tool that came with it installed. Uninstalled these prior to installing the 2005 tools (VS and SQLServer).
I'm not finding any information on corrective action for this error.
Any one have this problem and found the solution?

Can anyone tell me why I am getting this error when I try to select * from a table through a newly created synonym? I have admin rights to both db, but they are on separate servers.

I use this statement on my local machine

I am using the Import/Export wizard to import data from an ODBC data source. This can only be done from a query to specify the data to transfer.
When I try to create the tables, for the query, I am getting the following error:

I have searched the "2714 duplicate error msg," but have found references to duplicate table names, rather than multiple field names or column name duplicate errors, within a database.
I think that the schema is only allowing a single UserID primary key.

I'm setting up a simple SSRS implementation for a non-profit organization, using two servers hosted at a data center. The first server has SQL Server Standard Edition and Reporting Services installed. I've designed and deployed a number of useful reports on this server.
I was hoping to isolate this first server by installing IIS and SSRS on the second server, have users browse from the Internet to that second server (over SSL, of course), and have all reports served up from databases (and, presumably, the report server database) on the first server.
During the installation of SSRS on the second server, however, I'm being prompted to specify the service account. According to the help text:
"Reporting Services. Service accounts are used to configure a report server database connection. Choose a domain user account if you want to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance. If you are using a local report server database, you can use a domain user account or Local System to run the service."
I believe I want to configure SSRS to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance; therefore, it appears that I need to enter a domain user account. The only problem is, neither server belongs to a domain; they are members of a simple two-server workgroup.
Does SSRS, configured to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance, require a domain? Does what I'm hoping to accomplish require a domain? Creating a two-server domain seems like overkill for this implementation, doesn't it?

I have a website I'm ready to test on the server it will call home. I just got connected to the remote SQL server that it will be using. As I've been creating the site, I've been using the default SQL Express set-up in Visual Studio. Is there a way to have Visual Studio create all those default tables, procedures, etc. OR is there a way to copy all of that stuff from the SQL Express running on my machine to the remote SQL Server 2005?

My goal in to be able to notify (while they are using any windows forms) the users of my application that a general parameter (in a table) some other relevant information has changed.
I started by writting a remote object that exposes an avent (broadcats event). I tested it and every client application suscribed to this event is now able to know that remote object raised event (singleton). OK. But right now, when i try to use CLR to instantiate this remote object (to fire the event during trigger) i see Viisual Studio (2005) tells i cant include in solution my projects. Also i hant add references to my objects because the 'References' windows is quite different and much more restrictive. For instance i cant reference system.remoting. I find my problem is not very especial: inform the users of my application that something (that may be of relevant interes while working) has changed in the database. O want this happen during work on application, not via e-mail or SMS. I am not a SQL Server 2005 specialist. Simply use it via traditional T-SQL. May be there are someone that can help me. I have seen an idea consisting on execute a program .EXE but i find not too elegant and risky too.

I am currently investigating the best way to handle partition swapping where the partition scheme is built on several file groups. In order to swap partitions, both partitions need to be on the same file group. In addition, the file groups and partitions are automatically updated once a month meaning that there is a scheduled job that adds a new file group, file group files, and updates the related partition objects.If I am forced to create a new non-partition table on the same file group as the partition of the target table, what would be the best way to create the target table without hard coding the full table definition and clustered index? I know that I can query the systables and syscolumns views to reconstruct a basic SQL statement to build the table definition and views Is there a SQL Server function that I can use to just give me the object definitions? I have a table in my database with several car types, and the order I want for that table is:

This table is more or less always the same, but from time to time I want to add a new car type, for instance; Car_typeA_5, but this new type must be located under the last register, in the example under ‘Other_Cars_typeC’. So, now the order is wrong, and when I want to display these car types to a web form object, the items will appear wrong ordered.
My question is: To order the values(items) correctly, Where I have to do it? In the web page (ASP.NET) code behind, or somewhere in SQL Server (for example in the Stored Procedure that passes the value to the application)? Or maybe in the same database table..?

We have a database on a 2005 box, which we need to keep in sync with one on a 2014 box (until we can turn off the one on 2005). The 2005 database is still being updated with changes that must be applied to the 2014 database, given the nature of the data (medical documents) we need to ensure updates are applied to the 2014 database in very near real time (these changes are - for example - statuses, not the documents themselves).
Cunning plan #1, ulgy - not at all a fan of triggers - but use an after update trigger to run a sp on the remote box via a linked server in this format, with a SQL Server login for the linked server with permissions to EXEC the remote proc.

However, while the sp can be run against the linked server as a standalone query OK, when running it in a trigger it's throwing

I have read many threads on this issue & tried multiple solutions to no avail.
Here's my environment: SQL 2000, Logged directly into server via VPN (so it should be like I am physically at the server).
I've set up a DTS Package that executes an Access procedure. The package runs fine when I execute manually. When I execute via schedule, it fails on the error "ActiveX component can't create object: 'Access.Application'. The actual statement is:
Set objDB = CreateObject("Access.Application")
I know that Scheduled jobs default back to the SQL Agent permissions. I have reset SQL Agent to use my Windows NT account login so it should have the exact same permissions, etc. that I have when I execute manually?
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Here's one thing that I'd like to see come out in some version of the SQL Server Management Studio...
The ability to create folders under the database node so that databases can be grouped on one server.
We have over 100 databases on our development server and these are created by a range of consultants and developers and even support staff as needed.
Being able to group the databases by product, etc would be a nice touch since we have client databases that don't fit naming conventions etc.
Multiple instances are another way around this but are expensive and resource hungry - we develop and support models, not use them for transactions too much.
Yes there are 'better' ways such as setting security correctly but we are too busy working and not maintaining.
Folders or database groups would be a nice touch.

User bob has create procedure permission as follows:
grant create procedure to bob
bob would like to create a procedure in schema Accounts.
When he issues create proc Accounts.sp_proc.... it fails with:
Msg 2760, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_proc, Line 3
The specified schema name "Accounts" either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it.

Is it possible to create a SYNONYM that does not require you to use the owner prefix? Similar to an Oracle PUBLIC synonym.
for example:
CREATE SYNONM MySynonym FOR dbo.myfunction.
SELECT MySynonym FROM dbo.mytable;

Suppose that a synonym foobar exists pointing to the table foo.bar. I also have a table with the same name in my schema. (mpswaim.foobar)
If I do a select
select * from foobar
Which table does the select run against? mpswaim.foobar, or foo.bar?
In Oracle, mpswaim.foobar would win, and we used this to all ow individual developers to have their own version of application tables during development.
