Hi,
In the new flat file connection dialog box, can i create a flat file on a remote server? thanks.
Hello friends,
I have the following (simplified):
1. Flat File Source
2. Conditional Split, Case Good = !ISNULL(KEY) Case Error = ISNULL(KEY)
3. Case Good -> Writes to Good Flat File (with timestamp in the title)
4. Case Error -> Writes to Error Flat File (with timestamp in the title)
Most job runs have no errors but the error file is created as a zero byte file anyway. If there are no error records I don't want the error file created. How might I accomplish this?
Thanks
Any one can help for how to create sql table dynamically as per flat file format...
its required very urgently
I created a SSIS package, added Script task. created data flow task programatically, trying to add a flat file source component programatically. stuck at this point.
my goal is to add flat file source component to the data flow task and insert into a table in sql server using oledb destination component all programatically.
any help is appreciated. thanks.
I'm rather new to ssis and I've been reading and testing but didn't find a solution for this problem.Supose I've got a table Customer with some fields. One of the fields is CustID.I want to create as many flat files as there are Customers in the table with flat file name set to the CustID.If you could point me in a good direction, It would be nice.Greetings from Belgium
View 4 Replies View RelatedHi,
I have a data task with the following requirements:
1) Run query against database to retrieve rows
2) Add header and footer row to the result set. The footer row must contain a count of the records.
3) Write the rows to a fixed width file if there were any data rows
I have got to the point that I can create the file (using a set of tasks that includes derived columns, sorts, aggregation and merges). However the file is created regardless of whether there were data rows returned.
I can't check the row count before proceeding as this isn't set until the data task ends. And if I try to split them into separate data tasks (so that I can access this variable and perform conditional execution) it becomes harder to access the original rows.
Do you have any recommendations on the best way to achieve this?
It all seems to be very complex and I'm starting to feel that it would be easier to do this outside of SSIS...
Please help me to keep the faith!
For those interested this is a slightly simplified version of what I have so far (all within a single data task):
1.Run dummy sql to create header row 2.Run main SQL to retrieve rows
| |
| 3.Multicast
| | |
| | 4.Create footer row by doing sum() in aggregate task
| | |
| 5.Merge body and footer
| |
6. Merge header with body and footer
|
7. Create fixed width file
Hi all,
I am redirecting the critical lookup errors to the flat files. These flat files got created regardless if there are lookup errors or not.
Is there a better way to conditionally create them only when there are lookup errors?
Thanks.
Hi All,
How to create a text file in UNIX format using Flat File connection manager. By default when we create a connection manager for flat files it is taking "CRLF" as the delimeter.
I beleive the format of the file will be decided based on the control line feed character at the end of each row. There are different control line feeds for different operating systems.
CR - Mac OS (Carraige return)
LF - UNIX (Line Feed)
CRLF - Windows. (Carriage return Line Feed)
Correct me if i am wrong.
Thanks in advance.
Hello Guys,
I am working in one company and currently I am assigned to new project for Data Migration from company X to our company Y using SSIS. I am totally new and i just completed 5 tutorial which was gien on MSDN website.
Basically client is going to send us first flat file with 1 million records with Header, Detail and Trailer records.
I want to create a Package in such a way that it dumps all this first load into 7 to 8 different tables at a time.
we also have to include functionlity for validation and error check.
On successfull load error file should only return Header and Trailer but no detail records.
If there are any errors then error file should contain Header, Detail records which were unable to load plus trailer which we have to sent back to client.
When 2nd file comes that time we have to check whether this is new records or change (update) one depending on Flag which tells it.
This is basically high level idea of my Package what i need to create. If u guys have any question then let me know.
I know you guys are very experienced one. Anyone of you please give me some detail idea on it I would really appricate it.
I have very limited time line for it.
Thanks

Hi,
I am testing SSIS and have created a Flat File Destination. I defined the Flat File Connection as New for the first time and it worked fine. Now, I would like to go back and modify the Flat File Connection in the Flat File Destination Editor, but it allows only to create a New connection rather allowing me to edit the existing one. For testing, I can go back and create a new connection, but if my connection had 50-100 columns then it would be an issue to re-create it from scratch.
Did someone else faced this issue?
Thanks,
AQ
I have a Stored proc which on execution, will generate data in the view .
My requirement is using SSIS, how can I create a Flat file pointing to this view ?
Hi,
Actaully i want to install SQL SERVER 2005 Enterprise edition in the silent mode and I was tyring to create a response file (setup.iss), but from the document provided i saw that SQL SERVER 2005 Enterprise edition doesnt create response file, and doesnt support setup.iss. So please provide me some solution where i can generate response file or some thing which is similar to that.
Hi,
I have a situation where a tab limited text file is used to populate a sql server table.
The tab limited text file comes from a third party vendor. There are fixed number of columns we need to export to the sql server table. However the third party may add colums in the text file. Whenenver the text file has an added column (which we dont need to import) the build fails since the flat file connection manager does not create the metadata for it again. The problem goes away where I press the button "Reset Columns" since it builds the metadata then. Since we need to build the tables everyday we cannot automate it using SSIS because the metadata does not change automatically. Is there a way out in SSIS?
I am transferring data from an OLEDB source to a Flat File Destination and I want the column width for all of the output columns to 30 (max width amongst the columns selected), but that is not refected in the Fixed Width Flat File that got created. The outputcolumnwidth seems to be the same as the inputcolumnwidth. Is there any other setting that I am possibly missing or is this a possible defect?
Any inputs will be appreciated.

I have requirement like to develop dynamic package for inserting data from flat file to table.
Find below points for more clarification :--
1) if I changed the flat file values and name in source variable AND the table name should be also changed based on variable value .
2) it should dynamically mapped with column values with source file as we have to insert data in target table.
See below diagram for more clarification.
Hi all,
I m using SSIS and i am transfering the data from Flat File Source to the OLE DB destination File. The source file contain some corrupt data which i am transfering to the other Flat file destination file.
Debugging is succesful but i am not getting any error output in the Flat file destination file.
i had done exactly which is written in the msdn tutorial of SSIS.
Plz tell me why i am not getting the error output in the destination flat file?
thanx
First, a couple of important bits of information. Until last week, I had never touched SISS, and therefore, I know very little about it. I just never had the need to use it...until now. I was able to convert my first 3 flat files to SQL2005 tables by right clicking on "SISS Package" and choosing "SISS Import and Export Wizard". That is the extent of my knowledge! So please, please, please be patient with me and be as descriptive as possible.
I thought I could attach some sample files to this post, but it doesn't look like I can. I'll just paste the information below in two separate code boxes. The first code box is the flat file specifications and the second one is a sample single line flat file similar to what I'm dealing with (the real flat file is over 2 gigs).
My questions are below the sample files.

As you can see, each entry could have any number of records and multiples of some of the record types, with one exception, every entry must have a "01" record and can only have one "01" record. Oh, and each record has a length of 400.
I need to get this information into a SQL 2005 database so I can create a front end for accessing the data. Originally, I wanted one line for each account and have null values listed for entries that don't have a specific record. Now that I've looked at the data again, that doesn't look like a good idea. I think a better way to do it would be to create 5 different tables, one for each record type. However, records 2 through 5 don't have anything I can make a primary key. So here are my questions...
Is it possible to make 5 tables from this one file, one table for each of the record types?
If so, can I copy the Account number in record 01, position 13-19 in each of the subsequent record types (that way I could link the tables as needed)?
Can this be done using the SISS Import and Export Wizard to create the package? If not, I'm going to need some very basic step by step instructions on how to create the package.
Is SISS the best way to do this conversion or is there another program that would be better to use?
I know this is a huge question and I appreciate the help of anyone who boldly decides to help me! Thank you in advance and I welcome anyone's suggestions!
How can I take this example Flat file and parse out each section to a new flat file? Each section starts with HD (header row)
http://www.webfound.net/flat_file_example.txt
e.g. an example output file based on above (cutting out the first section) would be:
http://www.webfound.net/flatfile_output.txt
Also, I'll need to grab a certain value in each header row (certain position in the 100 byte header row) to use that as part of the filename that's outputed. I assume it would be better to insert these rows into a temp table then somehow do a search on a specific position in the row...but that's impossible? The other route is to insert each row into a temp table separated out by fields but that is going to be too combursome because we have several formats to determine separation of fields based on the row type so I'd have to create many temp tables and many components in SSIS when all we want to do is again:
1) output each group (broken by each header row) into it's own txt file
2) use a field in the header row as part of the name of the output txt file (e.g. look at the first row, whcih is a header row in flat_file_example. txt. I want to grab the text 'AR10' and use that as part of the filename that I create
Any suggestions on how to approach this whole process in SSIS...the simplest approach that will work ?
hi

related databases are stored on a seperated DataServer
I have the name of that DataServer
and i need to create new DBs programmatically
I use this statement on my local machine

i cant use Server.MapPath()
How could i do?

I'm setting up a simple SSRS implementation for a non-profit organization, using two servers hosted at a data center. The first server has SQL Server Standard Edition and Reporting Services installed. I've designed and deployed a number of useful reports on this server.
I was hoping to isolate this first server by installing IIS and SSRS on the second server, have users browse from the Internet to that second server (over SSL, of course), and have all reports served up from databases (and, presumably, the report server database) on the first server.
During the installation of SSRS on the second server, however, I'm being prompted to specify the service account. According to the help text:
"Reporting Services. Service accounts are used to configure a report server database connection. Choose a domain user account if you want to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance. If you are using a local report server database, you can use a domain user account or Local System to run the service."
I believe I want to configure SSRS to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance; therefore, it appears that I need to enter a domain user account. The only problem is, neither server belongs to a domain; they are members of a simple two-server workgroup.
Does SSRS, configured to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance, require a domain? Does what I'm hoping to accomplish require a domain? Creating a two-server domain seems like overkill for this implementation, doesn't it?
I appreciate any comments and suggestions. Thanks!
I have a flat file which contains like:
MEPMD01,19970819,test/ts1,35100,EASTERN,35100,200202140818,50767210,OK,E ,KHREG,1,00010014,02,200202130801,,00002651.556,20 0202140815,,00002668.860,
I want to transfer this file to a sql server database table.
My problem is how to send the above string to a table by formating like removing commas.
Can I do that using DTS. I need the answer very quickly.
Any help would be appreciated.
Or there is any better way to transfer the content to the table.
I inherited a flat file system of 100 "tables" with no PK/FK constraints, nor relationships in the RDBMS. The "constraints" are in the application (Bad Stuff I know). It's pretty obvious that they haven't worked.
The files are like this:
File A File B
Last_Name Task
First_Name Date_of_Task
When I run a query I get the following results:
Last Name First Name Task Date
Same Last Name Same First Name Different Task Date
Same Last Name Same First Name Different Task Date, etc.
I want to get rid of the redundant names. I have created a new database with the PK/FK restraints in place. However, I'm not sure how to migrate the old data into the new database. I want to make the Task column a date rather than a task itself. The task will be labeled in the column heading.
I'd like the outcome from a query to be:
lastname First Name Task 1 Task 2 Task3,....
I'm new to SQL and it seems like I need to run some sort of Sub Query, but I haven't been able to hit on the correct command/syntax. Thanks for your help.

Hi.
I want to import a flat file to my sql server database. My sql server and web server are on different machines. I used a bulk insert to import the data using a Format.. But now since the sql server and the web server are on different machine it doesnt load the data to the sql server..
i have tried giving http://Ipaddress/Path and that didnt work.. tried mapping the network drive to the webserver and then specified the location and that didnt work too..
I found this connection string on the internet
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=c: xtFilesFolder;Extended Properties="text;HDR=Yes;FMT=Fixed";
but i am not sure how to give a ~ delimited and specify a format file..
any help will be appreciated..

Karen
I'm using SQL Server 2008R2. I am developing a database which requires access to data from other servers. So far I have been creating views using OPENQUERY (where there's a performance benefit) to select specifically the columns I want. Generally, for my purposes, I find these OPENQUERY based views to perform better (some times significantly so) to simple SELECT <COLUMNS> FROM <SERVER>.<DATABASE>.<SCHEMA>.<TABLE> WHERE <Where clause Statements> format views. My understanding is that this is because an OPENQUERY "pushes" the query processing to the remote server and simply returns the final result set to the local server i.e. there's no cross-server join/synchronization going on.
My question is, if I were to create a Synonym for a table object on the remote server, where does the processing happen if I query from this Synonym or create a join with this synonym to a table in my local database?Essentially, I am trying to understand if there are any "hidden gotcha's" primarily from a performance perspective, to using synonyms.

I am trying to import into sql server from a .csv flat file i made in excel. The problem is the Primary Key. It is set to auto increment.
When i leave an empty column i get:
"Directcopyxform conversion error:destination does not allow null"
when i just omit the column entirely, i get a wrong datatype error because it basically tries to copy all the columns 1 shift to the left
How am i supposed to represent and auto PK in .csv file. Thanks

I'm trying to write a function that will retrieve the last backup date/time of a particular database on a remote server (i.e. by querying msdb.dbo.backupset). Unfortunately, you can't use sp_executesql in a function, so I can't figure out a way to pass the server name to the query and still be able to return the datetime value back to the calling TSQL code (so that rules out using EXEC().
