Created SQL Server Database Using SYBASE DLL && Data, But Data Problem
Jan 21, 2008
Hello,
I took our SYBASE DDL and created the tables on an SQL Server Express datbase on a PC and then downloaded our data from UNIIX using the WinSCP utility and BULK Inserted the data into the SQL Server database and everything uploaded fine apparently, but when we go to use the data we are getting some data differences.
Do you know of any data conversion issues that may be coming into play here maybe?
Thanks very much!

I am currently in the process of migrating data from Sybase to Sql server and would like to know how to test the data migrated.
As of now, we took one table data from both source and destination and compared it in Excel to check if the data migrated looks good (note, we used SSIS to migrate data). However, I would like to check if there are any other best & easy ways to apprach data validation post migration.

I have just started in a brand new role where I need to collect a large amount of diverse data. Part of this data is whether the steps in a guideline has been followed ( a simple check box or yes/no) (but there are maybe 100 guidelines)
My IT department have suggested we use SQL to create the database, but this will obviously take time. In the meantime my boss is keen that I get on with the data collection before the database is ready. I do not want to repeat steps when I create the SQL database so is there any format you would recommend I collect my data in now that can be easily applied to the SQL database - ie if I used Excel, would that be best, and should I then try to keep potential SQL table data separate?

Hi,
I needed to recreate/publish a DDL and data file(of a database) that was produced using Database Publishing Wizard. The size of the file is 4G. I receive the following error when I try to open it up in the new query window of sql server 2005 (sp2)for execution.
"The operation could not be completed. Not enough storage is available to complete this operation."
I know my server has 829G of free storage space available. i receive no errors when I open up a smaller file also created by database publishing wizard.
What possibly is causing this?
Thanks in advance

I am getting ready to start a project where I am charged with moving out old data from production into a newly created historical DB. We have about 8 tables that are internal audit tables, that are big and full of old data. These tables are barely used and are taking up way too much space and time for maintenance.
I would like to create a way (SSIS?) to look at the date field in each of the 8 tables and copy out anything older than two years into my newly created history DB. Then deleting the older records from the source DB.
I don't know if SSIS is the best method to use. If it is, what containers to use to move over data, then how to do delete from source?
Can I do the mass deletes on my audit source tables without impacting performance/indexes/fragmentation?

Hi,
A partner company unfortunately chose Sybase SQL Anywhere v5 as their database and I have to return data from the tables for a web service that I am writing - YUCK !
The ODBC driver is riddled with errors and has no support. Third party .NET providers do not seem to support v5, so I have resorted to playing with DTS in Enterprise Manager.
After fumbling around for a while, I managed to get an "Execute SQL Task" to return data and saved the package in both SQL and VB.
Now, before I waste any more time heading in this direction, can anybody advise if DTS is supported by MSDE as the full blown SQL Server will not be an option ?
If it is supported - is this a good way to go, or is there a better solution ?
Thanks in advance.
Steve.

I read , When sql server Database having multiple data files within single filegroup then sql server writes data in multiple proportional file algorithm where the amount of data written to a file is proportionate to the amount of free space in that file, compared to other files in the filegroup.
so if there is no filegroups created and multiple secondary files are attached in databse , is there same way data stored and writes data in multiple files by the same algorithm or any different way.

Hello,
Does anyone know the error number, syntax to use in Sybase?
For SQL Server, the following works:
RAISERROR ('No data found today for the GetOOHHedgeFundTrades Report.',16,1) WITH SETERROR
I am not sure about how to use this in Sybase.
Many Thanks

I'd like to select data out of an oracle table, and UPDATE a sybase table. So far I've got as far as the following:
1. create a package
2. add 2 connection managers, set retainsameconnection=true on both just to be sure.
3. add an executesql command which creates a temporary table
create table #temp_wm ( instru_id int)
4. add a dataflow task with:
i) an oledb source with a select statement: "select instru_id from mytable"
ii) an oledb destination with open rowset: #temp_wm
added an external column called instru_id in the inputs and outputs tab
when i run, the create temp table task work, the select works, but the insert into fails. If I change the select statement to:
"select instru_id from mytable where 1=0" it all executes fine.
So everythings copacetic as long as i don't need to actually insert any real records = brilliant!
1. HAS ANYONE OUTTHERE SUCCESSULLY USED SSIS TO INSERT DATA INTO A SYBASE TEMPORARY TALBE - MAYBE ITS JUST NOT POSSIBLE??
2. Any idea how I can fix my setup?
I'm usign Sybase ASE OLE DB Drivers
Note: i also tried ## temp tables, no difference.
This is the error output.
[OLE DB Destination [255]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.

Is it possible to get SQL Server Migration Assistant to read data from a Sybase view and store it in a SQL table. My problem is that I have a legacy sybase application that is being decomissioned and I have been asked to migrate the data into SQL Server. The problem I have is that:
The account I have been provided to connect to the Sybase database does not have select privileges on all the tablesI don't have the sa password for the Sybase database to alter the security. The vendor support contract has expired and it does not appear I have any way to get the sa password
The account I've been given has access to query data in several views even though it does not have access to the underlying tables that the view pulls data from. Since this is a legacy application whose data is now static, I wonder if it's possible to read the data from the Sybase views and dump it into SQL tables.

I'd like to transfer some records between the following 2 tables. Surely this should be a no-brainer - what am i missing that is making this so impenetrable?
I am currently: Hoping someone can help me get here: (this is my first time of using SSIS btw).
here is the source table (MS Sql Server 2005, SP 2)
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[imagine_divs](
[div_mnemonic] [nvarchar](11) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[div_date] [int] NULL,
[div_amount] [float] NULL,
[div_status] [nvarchar](16) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[div_curr_mnem] [nvarchar](11) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[div_upd_date] [int] NULL,
[div_payment_date] [int] NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
here is the target table (Oracle 9i)
CREATE TABLE myschema.imagine_divs
(div_mnemonic NVARCHAR2(11),
div_date NUMBER(*,0),
div_amount NUMBER(20,5),
div_status NVARCHAR2(16),
div_curr_mnem NVARCHAR2(11),
div_upd_date NUMBER(*,0),
div_payment_date NUMBER(*,0))
/
I used the SSIS Import and Export wizard to copy data between the two tables, and attempted to execute it. I use Sql Native Provider on source, and Native Ole DBOracle Provider for OLEDB. however, I get an error:
[Destination - IMAGINE_DIVS [37]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "OraOLEDB" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "ORA-12571: TNSacket writer failure".
I notice that the wizard has created a data flow task with 3 steps: source - imagine_divs, Destination - IMAGINE_DIVS and "data conversion 1".
Data Conversion 1 seems to be taking my source nvarchar columns and converting them to DT_STR with twice the size (for example div_mnemonic become DT_STR, size: 22).
If I change the mappings in the OLE DB Destination Editor, such that only the numeric and date-typed columns are included in the transfer, it works fine.
If I include any string-typed column in the destination editor mappings, I get the TNS Packet Writer error. If I remove the Data Conversion step and connection teh source and destination tasks directly, i get validation errors saying that:
Error 2 Validation error. Data Flow Task: OLE DB Destination [294]: Columns "div_mnemonic" and "DIV_MNEMONIC" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types. Package4.dtsx 0 0
this is despite the fact that everything is unicode here (right?)
what in the world is going on?

I'm in the middle of developing a Database for a hospital that measures its audits, inhouse operations, and finance. What we currently have and do everyday is collect data from a large database that is real time with patient data, progess, infomation, etc and dump it into a data warehouse that runs on TSI/Eclipsys. We run reports using a number of programs and dump it into Excel sheets that have charts, reports, etc. This Database for which I'm developing won't come soley from the TSI/Eclypsys source, but this is the only source thats updated regularly. I don't want to have in sync with TSI/Eclipysys in fear that every day when it updates data may be lost, not read, or worse won't be up date if there is a problem. My question is is it possible to run a query from Sequel Server 2005 that will take that data upon request using the reporing features on Sequel Server 2005. i.e. What if I need to run a report on measure B in department 12 from Jan 1-Feb 1, instead of being in sync, can I just write queries to take that information rather than double the data and take up twice the space and trouble. FYI, these datatypes rarely change in the TSI/Eclipsys data warehouse. This sure was long question and didn't intended it to be . Thanks for listening and hope to hear back.

trying to get a new database created then running a script to created the tables, relationships, indexes and insert default data. All this I'm making happen during the installation of my Windows application. I'm installing SQL 2012 Express as a prerequisite of my application and then opening a connection to that installed SQL Server using Windows Authentication.Â
E.g.: Data Source=ComputerNameSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=master;Integrated Security=SSPI; Then I run a query from my code to create the database eg: "CREATE DATABASE [MyDatabaseName]".
From this point I run a script using a Batch file containing "SQLCMD....... Myscriptname.sql". In my script I have my tables being created using "Use [MyDatabaseName]   Go  CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MyTableName] .....". So question is, should I have [dbo]. as part of my Create Table T-SQL commands? Can I remove "[dbo]."? Who would be the owner of the database? If I can remove the [dbo]., should I also remove dbo. from any query string from within my code?

Hello I have a project that uses a large number of MS Data access pages created in Access 2003 and runs on MS SQL2005.
When I am on lets say my client, (first page in a series) data access page and I have completed the fields in the (DAP), I am directing my users to the next step of the registration process by means of a hyperlink to another Data access page in the same web but in a linked or sometimes different table.
I need to pass data entered /created on the first page to the next page and populate the next page with some data from the first page / table. (like staying on the client name and ID when i go to the next page)
I also need the first data access page to open and display a blank or new record. Not an existing record. I will also be looking to creata a drop down box as a record selector.
Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
I am some what new to data access pages so a walk through would be nice but anything you got is welcome. Thanks Peter€¦

Lets say I have a table called MyData.
MyData has two columns, ID (int), and Value (varchar(x) )
Lets say the data in the table looks like this:
ID Value
- -----------
1 A
1 B
1 C
2 A
2 D
3 E
3 F
3 A
3 G
now, is there any way to construct a select statement from this data that will return a dataset that looks like this?
ID ALL_VALUES
- --------------------
1 A,B,C
2 A,D
3 A,E,F,G
In other words, is there a way to combine all the Value field values into one field for each ID?

Hello,
I have a small three server development environment where I am getting my feet wet with replication. I have set up peer-to-peer transactional replication and it works fine for data added to the publication's table after the publication was created. However, rows in the table that existed prior to the publication's creation have never replicated. If any of the "old" rows are edited they cause an error on the subscribing servers when the replicator attempts to apply updates to rows that do not exist.
How can I get the old rows that predate the publication to replicate?
Thanks,
BCB

In my applications, I often encounter situations where the domain of a type is some set (e.g. Student, Staff etc. for Membership type etc.). A common solution is to assign integral values to each possible value of the set & convert them to corresponding strings programatically when fetching data, or use a Foreign Key into a relation defining each of the unique value.
MySql has a Set Data type. So, this time around, I decided to do the same with Sql Server, and resorted to CLR to create a custom data type, whose domain could only be a collection of predefined strings or other data types.
But, just before deploying the assembly, the performance bug struck me. So, assuming a simple custom data type, like:
Code Snippet
<Serializable()> _
<Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlUserDefinedType(Format.Native)> _
Public Structure MemberType
Implements INullable
Private Const Student As String = "Student"
Private Const Staff As String = "Staff"
Private memType As Int16
Private m_Null As Boolean
Public Overrides Function ToString() As String
If (Me.m_Null) Then
Throw New SqlTypes.SqlNullValueException("Null Reference Exception")
End If
Select Case memType
Case 1
Return Student
Case 2
Return Staff
Case Else
Throw New Exception("Invalid State for MemberType")
End Select
End Function
Public ReadOnly Property IsNull() As Boolean Implements INullable.IsNull
Get
' Put your code here
Return (Me.m_Null)
End Get
End Property
Public Shared ReadOnly Property Null() As MemberType
Get
Dim h As MemberType = New MemberType
h.m_Null = True
Return h
End Get
End Property
Public Shared Function Parse(ByVal s As SqlString) As MemberType
If s.IsNull Then
Return Null
ElseIf (StrComp(s.ToString(), Student, CompareMethod.Text) = 0) _
OrElse StrComp(s.ToString(), "1") = 0 Then
Dim u As New MemberType
u.memType = 1
u.m_Null = False
Return (u)
ElseIf (StrComp(s.ToString(), Staff, CompareMethod.Text) = 0) _
OrElse StrComp(s.ToString(), "2") = 0 Then
Dim u As New MemberType
u.memType = 2
u.m_Null = False
Return (u)
Else
Throw New SqlTypes.SqlTypeException("Invalid Value for MemberType")
End If
End Function
End Structure
Would it be a performance issue, if I use such Data types, whose data is fetched or updated frequently???

How to add SQl statements to the package created by Export Data wizard? I need to add SQL coming from file, the flow would be like this:
1) SQL would drop all objects: (views, tables, stored procedures) etc
2) SQL would create all objects: (views, tables, stored procedures) etc
3) Export Wizard SSIS package would execute
Also is there a dynamic way to add more tables do the package once created in SQL database? I would like to put the whole task on a scheduler too...

Hello dear Forum,
I guess this should be rather simple to answer but i just don't get how to do this. I just want to import some data from an Access mdb file into a SQL Server 2005 Database.
As I dont want to create all tables in Sql Server 2005 beforehand i'd like to create them out of my SSIS Package. Therefore i use the 'Execute SQL Task' in the control flow before stepping into the dataflow where only a oledb-source and an oledb-destination exist...
VERY simple... My problem is, that i can't select the table from the selectionlist in the oledb-destination because it does not exist before executing the package...
If i create the table by hand just to be able to select it, that does not help. because if everything is set up and then i delete the table (because it will be created by the package anyway) an error occurs before executing the package - in the validation phase:
Package Validation Error: "Invalid object name 'myToBeCreatedTable'".
Can't i create tables on the fly which i use then in my dataflow tasks?
Kind regards,
Wolfgang

Hi all (newbie @ asp.net)(oldie @ ASP 3)What is the purpose of using an attached MDF database files in the App_Data folder on a web site as to importing it into the SQL server directly or creating it on the SQL server. Does a mdf database attached file purely use the SQL server as a connection interface. Is it something similiar to DSN(ODBC) Connections for ms access databases.

I would like to fetch data of those user who have created profile within 7 days. For getting desired result I am trying this query.
select Name ,Profession,ProfileCreationDate from tblRegistration where DATEDIFF ( Day , '" + System.DateTime.Now + "',ProfileCreationDate)<7 order by ProfileCreationDate DESC
System.DateTime.Now is a function for getting current date time in C#
The query is neither giving error nor giving desired result.

We are running SQL Server 2005 Standard edition on a Vista Business machine. Whenever we try to use DTS to import or export data we get this message:
The SSIS Data Flow Task could not be created. Verify that DTSPipeline.dll is available and registered.
Of course we have explicitly registered this dll and others.
Also we reinstalled SQL Server (and did it again. And did it again).
And we did the same for Visual Studio Standard (and again).
Any ideas in this elaborate group?
Thanks,
Tjerk
