I am backing up a database as follows:
backup database PPLicense to disk = 'D:License.bak'
I have run this 5 times. If I know run this command:
restore headeronly from disk = 'D:License.bak'
I can see 5 entries returned this all looks good. In SQL Management studio I try and restore this database by selecting the file. The Restore Database dialog only shows the last backup set position i.e. position 5 and now the 4 before it. Why is this not showing the 4 previous backups?
I am using SQL Server 2012 SP 2 (Version 11.0.3460).

Hi,
I have serious trouble trying to log in to SSRS using Management Studio. I have installed SSRS to existing named instance of SQL 2005 than I have configured it using Reporting Services Configuration tool. At this point some thing was not OK as initialization button is grayed out (although it indicates that initialization went OK). At this point everything seems to be OK the reporting site is available through web browser. Alas when I€™m trying to log in into reporting services using Management Studio I get error €œUnable to connect to remote server. No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it (System)€? I was trying different authentication methods and different configuration. I was trying to set up permissions to DCOMs as suggested on some topics on this forum. Finally I got to SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and when I go to Surface Area Configuration Features and click on Reporting Services, Windows Integrated Security I€™m getting error €œThe request failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden (System.Web.Services)€? and than whole Surface Area Configuration Features is closing. At this point I had no further idea what is going on and what more I could try to make it work. Any help greatly appreciated.

After install SQL Server 2005, then run it sampel for report. Using VS2005 to deploy the report to report server.
The report can be previewed in VS2005.
After deploying, open SQL Server Management Studio.
1. Add local user Administrator to database AdventureWorks
2. Pick up one sample report Company Sales from AdventureWorks(Home-->AdventureWorks-->Company Sales), then go to
DataSource-->AdventureWorks, the setting for this datasource as below:
Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks;Integrated Security=True
Select "Credentials stored securely on the report server" with following setting:
Login name: Administrator
Password: (right password here)
Checked for "Use as Windows credentials when connectiing to the data source"
3. Then right on ths report (Company Sales), from popup menu-->View Report
Then in browser, it ask for user name and password, input as:
User name: Administrator
Password: (right password here)
Get infomation as:
You are not authorized to view this page
The URL is: http://localhost/reportserver/?/AdventureWorks%20Sample%20Reports/Company%20Sales&rs:Command=Render
Then try a different setting, use different user account in Database, same error message.
What's wrong with it? How to solve this issue?

I cannot find a good way to view existing Foreigh Key Relationships in SQL Server Management Studio Express. In the Object Explorer, if you click on a table to expand it, you can see a tree view of EVERYTHING about the table (Columns, Keys, Contraints, Triggers, Indexes, Statistics), but NOTHING about Foreign Key Relationships!!
The only way I have found is that you have to open the table in Design mode, then right click, and choose Relationships, and only then can you see what FK Relationships are defined.
You should be able to see the FK Rletaionships in the tree view of the Object Explorer window!

We have a 64-bit VM server running SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server on this particular VM server has 6 local instances installed. On the Management Studio logon screen I can type the full name of the local instance and connect to it, however if I press the drop down in the Server name field, choose Browse and select the Local Servers tab there is nothing listed under Database Engines.
Any idea why the 6 local instances don't show up under Database Engines? This is preventing me from installing a vendor application because their installer looks for local SQL Server instances on this server, but if SQL Server won't even show the local instances then the installer doesn't see them either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig

I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio. I have a view that I'd like to index. Obviously, that requires that the view be schema bound to the underlying table. I have found myriad explanations for how to programmatically create a schema bound view, but I've never created a view like that before, and since I'm more a mechanical engineer than a database manager, I'd like to be able to do it the 'easy' way, by just creating the view in Management Studio by going to the database, right clicking on 'Views', clicking on 'New View...' and then, hopefully, checking some box somewhere that schema binds the table to the view.

I have installed and configured a 2nd instance of SSRS 2005 Standard Edition SP1 on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2. The 2nd instance is using it's own database and virtual directories under the default website. All configuration steps ran without error. I have no problem accessing the 2nd instance virtual directories via IE. When I connect to Reporting Services via Management Studio, it gives me no options for which instance to access and connects to the default instance. How do I connect to a 2nd named instance of SSRS via Management Studio? I've found no documentation in BOL related to this.

Hi,When I attempt to add the membership functionality to a database created within VWD Express, by using the aspnet_regsql.exe application (connecting to ./SQLEXPRESS using Windows authentication), the database I've created within VWD Express doesn't appear within the list of accessible databases. I have the same problem when attempting to access the same database within Management Studio Express.Does this mean that databases created from within VWD Express don't use the same storage mechanism or paradigm as those already available within Management Studio Express? Or perhaps I need to somehow register the database using Management Studio Express? As a side note, I'm not sure if the "File/Open File" menu option within Management Studio Express holds the answer to my problems, but rather bizarrely, it crashes Management Studio Express when I select it.Apologies for the rambling - in essence my question is "How can I make databases created within VWD Express appear within aspnet_regsql.exe and/or Management Studio Express?"Many thanks,Jon

Hello,
In SQL Server Management Studio (2005), 'Open table' command or a SELECT query displays table rows in a grid (or text). Please tell how to view a single row at a time i.e. all only ONE row is displayed at a time (evenly arranged to cover the screen).
This feature (Single record view) is available in other database client like TOAD.
Thank You

Hi,
I'm attempting to extract some yearly average figures from our DB. I've written a SELECT statement in SQL Server MS which returns exactly what I need:
SELECT YEAR, CAllSource, AVG(CallTotal) AS [Average calls per day]
FROM (SELECT COUNT(CallID) AS CallTotal, DATEPART(YEAR, Recvddate) AS Year, CASE WHEN CallSource IN ('Auto Ticket', 'Email')
THEN 'Email' WHEN CallSource IN ('Phone') THEN 'Phone' ELSE 'Other' END AS CallSource
FROM Calllog where
DATEPART(MONTH, Recvddate) = 3
AND DATEPART(dw, RecvdDate) NOT IN ('7', '1')
GROUP BY RecvdDATE, callsource) as sub
GROUP BY YEAR, CallSource
ORDER BY YEAR, CallSource
The problem is that when I attempt to use this in SSRS I get the following error:
"sub.Year is not a recognised DATEPART Option".
Now as you can see, "sub.Year" is not even mentioned in the expression. However I noticed that when running the query, SSRS automatically adds "sub." before the YEAR in the section highlighted in yellow above. a) Why is it doing this, and b) does anyone know of a workaround/fix?
Thanks
Matt

I have a complex view in my sql 2005 database.
The view returns a column that could be null (as the result of a left outer join).
The coulmn that is returned is an integer.
Everything works fine if I run the view from SQL 2005 Management Studio.
My column value is always null if I use ADO.NET's SqlAdapter to return a DataTable.
Has anybody seen this behaviour before?
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Paul.

As part of our security project, I've done the following when logged in as 'sa':
Created database roles 'dbrole1' within dbAccount
Created login and user 'user1' and added user to be a member of 'dbrole1'
Granted execute permissions on sp1 and sp2 to 'dbrole1'
However, I didn't see the above permissions listed in SQL Server Management Studio - Database - Security - Roles - Database Roles - 'dbrole1' properties - securables
Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello,
i've written the following query:
SELECT dbo.KALENDER.KALENDER_ID, dbo.KALENDER.JAHR_BEZ, dbo.KALENDER.JAHR_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_WERT,
dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_BEZ1, dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_BEZ2, dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_BEZ1,
dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_BEZ2, dbo.KALENDER.MONAT_BEZ, dbo.KALENDER.MONAT_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.TAGE_IM_MONAT,
dbo.TAG.KALENDERWOCHE, dbo.TAG.WOCHENTAG, dbo.TAG.TAG, s.STUNDE_ID, s.DATUM_ZEIT
FROM dbo.KALENDER INNER JOIN
dbo.TAG ON dbo.KALENDER.KALENDER_ID = dbo.TAG.KALENDER_ID INNER JOIN
dbo.STUNDE AS s ON dbo.TAG.TAG_ID = s.TAG_ID
WHERE (SELECT MONTH(s.datum_zeit)) = ((SELECT MONTH(GETDATE()))-2)and
(SELECT year(s.datum_zeit)) = (SELECT year(GETDATE()))
order by s.stunde_id
when copying that query to the view editor and executing it, it trys to fix it somehow to:
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT dbo.KALENDER.KALENDER_ID, dbo.KALENDER.JAHR_BEZ, dbo.KALENDER.JAHR_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_WERT,
dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_BEZ1, dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_BEZ2, dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_BEZ1,
dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_BEZ2, dbo.KALENDER.MONAT_BEZ, dbo.KALENDER.MONAT_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.TAGE_IM_MONAT,
dbo.TAG.KALENDERWOCHE, dbo.TAG.WOCHENTAG, dbo.TAG.TAG, s.STUNDE_ID, s.DATUM_ZEIT
FROM dbo.KALENDER INNER JOIN
dbo.TAG ON dbo.KALENDER.KALENDER_ID = dbo.TAG.KALENDER_ID INNER JOIN
dbo.STUNDE AS s ON dbo.TAG.TAG_ID = s.TAG_ID
WHERE ((SELECT MONTH(s.datum_zeit) AS Expr1
FROM ) =
(SELECT MONTH(GETDATE()) AS Expr1) - 2) AND
((SELECT YEAR(s.datum_zeit) AS Expr1
FROM ) =
(SELECT YEAR(GETDATE()) AS Expr1))
ORDER BY s.STUNDE_ID
... but this causes syntax-errors. I don't understand why this query works fine in the query editor but then gets automatically "destroyed" by the view editor. Do i have to use more statements to get the working query to run inside a view?
Thanks alot for reading.

Why are the user databases that were created in the MSSQLSERVER default instance showing up in the newly created ALPHAONE instance? I'm successfully logging into the alphaone database as it shows as "DASAlphaOne,1xxxPport) at the top of the treeview in ssms. I'm logging in as sa and can edit anything.
The issue here is that all the user databases are shown and can even be edited. I created this instance in an effort to hide databases from whoever is not supposed to see.I was expecting a clean instance with only the system databases..Is there something that can be set to keep each instance's databases private into itself?

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.
I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?
I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?
I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.
How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.
Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.
My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.
Thanks

Hi there,Got a small tech support problem. We gave our manual writer an installerthat should install SQL Server (MSDE) and our software. Over the phone I'vemanaged to ascertain that SQL Server is installed (it is running as aservice, along with SQL Server Agent), but it does not show up in "ComputerManagement -> Services and Applications". I need to set the permissions forthis user (over the phone!) in order to get our test software to work andyet it does not show here. What am I doing wrong? (and/or why would theMSDE instance not show up here?).Thanks,Robin

I am trying to use VB.NET to run SSIS packages. However I don't have the various dts namespaces available. When I attempt to import them I only have Microsoft.SqlServer.Server in intellisense.
I am running on XP sp2, VS 2005 (full install) and even went so far as to install sql 2005 sp1 full install on my local machine.
What gives with only having Microsoft.SqlServer.Server available?
