In oracle we create abstract datatypes using the command, for example,
CREATE TYPE address as object
(Street varchar2(50),
cuty varchar2(25));
Can this be done in SQL SERVER 2005? I am new to SQL SERVER 2005. Please help me out giving out the proper syntax alongwith an example.

Hi all,
I'm trying to create a temporary table with one of the columns with a datetime datatype. Sql server 7.0 is giving me an error:
Error 195 date is not a recognized function name.
Example of my create table looks something like this:
create table #temp_table(column_one int, column_two(15,2), Column_three datetime)

Is there a way to find out what the datatypes of a temp table are?
Example:
select cust_code, cust_name, cust_state
into #customers
where cust_state = 'TX'
I would like to know what datatypes SQL used when creating #customers.
Thank you for all the help.

In Oracle when i create any procedure i define parameter datatype linked to under lying table.
For ex
create procedure testprocedure
(param1 customer.name%type,
param2 customer.salary%type )
Here i have defined param1 and param2 with datatype of name and salary of customer table respectively.
This way i do not need to worry about modifying param1 and param2 datatypes when datatypes of name & salary of customer table changes in future.
How can i accomplish this in SQL server.

Table A
ID ItemQtyCreatedDatetime
W001 CB112014-06-03 20:30:48.000
W002 CB112014-06-04 01:30:48.000
Table B

A004 CB112014-06-04 01:05:48.000
A005 CB112014-06-04 02:05:48.000
I would like to return the nearest date of Table B in my table like for
ID W001 in table B should return ID A002 CreatedDatetime: 2014-06-03 20:05:48.000
ID W002 in table B should return ID A004 CreatedDatetime: 2014-06-04 01:05:48.000

Hello all,
Hope that someone can help with this. I am trying to write an expression that will return a date using the two of the parameters on the report. I tried using CAST but VS will not allow that.
The parameters are..
Parameters!Month.Value
Parameters!Year.Value
There are going to be twelve columns on the report, each one representing a month out of the time frame selected. If the user were to select January 2007 the columns would then display --Jan 07, Dec 06, Nov 06 and so on.
Thanks so much for any help in this.

Hi all-
I was wondering if you had created a default for data/time (I'm looking to create one that will insert the equiv. of time()). When I try to make one and set the value to time() it tells me the value cannot be anything except a function, constant, or var. What's the deal?
Thanks.

Hi,
I am new to SQL Server, and this may be a silly problem .. but here goes!
I need to create tables based on the date ie FEB2000 for EOM reports, I thought I may be able to do it by
1) Check if Table Exists, if so fop it
2) Recreate Table
3) Populate it with data
Unfortunately I'm still on step 1 <sad look>
--->
CREATE PROCEDURE TEST AS
DECLARE @TableName varchar(50)
SET @Tablename = 'FEB2000'
IF EXISTS(SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES
WHERE TABLE_NAME = @Tablename)
DROP TABLE @tablename
GO
<---
I would of course hand the table name as a variable, but for testing purposes used a set variable.
Thanks in Advance

I maintain a simple employment (job) tracking web application.
Jobs can be set to 5 different statuses: Open, Closed, Filled, Pending, or Cancelled.
There is a table in the database called statusLog, which records everytime a job is set to opened, or set to closed, etc. It records the job number, the date it was changed, and what the job was changed to.
Here is a short example of what a few entries might look like:
Status Date Job number
Open10/6/2002 2:34:56 PMTEST2845
Hold10/11/2002 12:19:29 PMTEST2845
Closed10/29/2002 2:00:54 PMTEST2845
Pending10/25/2002 3:37:06 PMTEST2877
What I need to do is write an SQL query that will return to me all entries in this table, between two certain dates, that ONLY have entries during those dates.
Basically I need to know how many "new" jobs were set to open during a month. I can easily just do a count of how many jobs were set to open, but this will not give a count of "new" jobs.
Example: during june a job could be set to open. Then in july it could be set to pending. Then in august, it could be re-opened, and set to open.
If I ran this query for the month of August, it would return that job as being opened in august. But it wasn't a new job, meaning it had already been in the system in previous months.
Is there some way I can select all "Open" jobs, between a certain date, that do not exist anywhere in the table previous to the date it was entered? This would give me a result set containing only new jobs.
The only way I've thought of yet is to get a result set of all jobs simply set to open during a month, then one by one for each record, go back and run another SQL query to see if it exists in the table anywhere other than in that month.
This seems horribly inefficient to me however, as I do not want to be doing 34,000 independent SQL calls for every single "open" job it finds during a certain month.
thanks

I'm trying to create a trace file with the file as part of it's name.For example, I'd like to create a file called FailedLogins-20050428. Sofar I haven't been able to figure out how to get the name of the fileand the date together (I'm sill very new to SQL Server and tracing).What I've done is:declare @rc intdeclare @traceid intdeclare @maxfilesize bigintset @maxfilesize = 50exec @rc=sp_trace_create @traceid=@traceid output, @options=0,@tracefile=N'C: racefailedlogins', @maxfilesize=@maxfilesize,@stoptime=NULLif @rc > 0 print 'sp_trace_code failed with error code ' +rtrim(cast(@rc as char))else print 'traceid for the trace is ' + rtrim(cast(@traceid as char))I can create a trace file on C drive without difficulty. I've triedcreating a file like this:exec @rc=sp_trace_create @traceid=@traceid output, @options=0,@tracefile=N'C: racefailedlogins + convert (varchar,getdate(),112',@maxfilesize=@maxfilesize, @stoptime=NULLBut what I end up created is a file on C calledfailedlogins + convert(varchar,getdate(),112).trcI have no doubt what I want to do can be done. I just done know how todo it.If anyone could tell me where I'm going wrong, I'd really appreciateit.Thanks in advance.

I have a 7 million line table named SecurityID with the following data:
Date, Security, Identifier1, Identifier2, Identifier3
I am trying to reduce it to a table newSecurityID in the following form:
FromDate, ToDate, SecurityId, Identifier1, Identifier2, Identifier3
This new table will have the first instance for each securityId with the identifying information. New rows will be added If any of the 3 identifying information changes. This isn't as simple as querying for the maximum and minimum value given each distinct group of identifiers because identifiers can change from an initial set and then change back to the initial values.
My plan was to first select all distinct (Security, Identifier1, Identifier2, Identifier3) into a temporary table. Then query the table SecurityID for the minimum date available which matches these 4 fields and find the corresponding maximum value.
This doesn't seem to working as I had planned as I am getting one row for each date rather than when identifiers change. Plus its taking a really long time to finish.
Any help will be appreciated!
Here is my code:
select distinct SecurityId, Identifier1, Identifier2, Identifier3 into #DistinctSecurityID from SecurityID
insert into
newSecurityID (FromDate, ToDate, SecurityId, Identifier1, Identifier2, Identifier3 )
select
FromDate=min( a.Date),
ToDate=isnull((
select min(b.Date)
from
SecurityId b
where
b.SecurityId=a.SecurityId
and b.Date>a.Date
and (a.Identifier1!= b.Identifier1
OR a.Identifier2!=b.Identifier2
OR a.Identifier3!= b.Identifier3)
),'20991231'),
#DistinctSecurityID.SecurityId,
#DistinctSecurityID.Identifier1,
#DistinctSecurityID.Identifier2,
#DistinctSecurityID.Identifier3
from
SecurityID a,
#DistinctSecurityID
where
#DistinctSecurityID.SecurityId=a.SecurityId
and #DistinctSecurityID.Identifier1=a.Identifier1
and #DistinctSecurityID.Identifier2=a.Identifier2
and #DistinctSecurityID.Identifier3=a.Identifier3
group by
#DistinctSecurityID.SecurityId,
#DistinctSecurityID.Identifier1,
#DistinctSecurityID.Identifier2,
#DistinctSecurityID.Identifier3,
a.SecurityId,
a.Date,
a.Identifier1,
a.Identifier2,
a.Identifier3
order by
a.SecurityId,

creating the missing records in a date/time range.
However, I need to return different groups for each span of records.
here's some data....
aaa1
aaa7
bbb2
bbb5
bbb6
The numbers are the hour of the day.
I need to return
aaa 0 0
aaa 1 1
aaa 2 0
aaa 3 0
...
bbb 0 0
bbb 1 0
bbb 2 1
...
and so on.
I've got a numbers table and I can left join with it but I just get nulls for the missing hours instead of having it as above.....I can't think of a way of repeating the groups for each of the 'missing' hours - other than creating a length insert statement to fill in the gaps....unless that is the only way of doing it.

Is this not working because GETDATE() is like a timestamp format? How can I get this to work to return those rows where [EODPosting].[MatchDate] is equal to today's date?

Hello all:
Is it possible to creates fields of the table dynamically?. I have this situation in my project. This is just a small sample. I have row of length 140. I don't wan't to declare all this fields manually using the create table command.
The description of table is as, in this table all the field are of type varchar only, there are like 140 columns.
create dummy emp (
field1 VARCHAR(100), field2 varchar(200), field3 VARCHAR(100).... )
Table: Dummy
================================================== ==
field1 field2 field3..........
Empid Empname empaage1 sam 23...........
2 rai 22............
.
.
.
n raj 45.............
================================================== ==
Now I want to create another table as "EMP" , with proper data type
fields too..
create table emp (
empid int, empname varchar(100), empage int....)
The table should look like as:
Table: EMP
================================================== ==
Empid Empname empaage............
1 sam 23...............
2 rai 22................
.
.
.
n raj 45.................
================================================== ==
I want to do this dynamically.....
Some how I need to extract those field from table[dummy]; the first row acts as a column header for the table[Emp] and the subsequent row acts as a record for the table[Emp]
A small rough snippet of the code will be appreciated....
Waiting for replies........
