I have read what people have posted on this but don't seem to find exactly what i want. I tried the methods from this website like many suggest http://www.sqlis.com/default.aspx?311. But all this seems to do insert new records but does not update the existing records.
This is what i want to do. I have an online store that uses an SQL DB with a products table. I have an excel/csv spreadsheet with the same columns as in the sql database. It is much quicker for me to update the spreadsheet than logging in to sql to do it. So i would like to update all the product prices on flat file to the sql table. There will be more updating than adding new rows.
Please can you help.

Skip Foreign Key Violations During Insert Operations?
May 12, 2014I'm trying to optimize a few batch import procedures we use in our processes.
It currently works like this:
1) Cursor loop cycles through all data to be imported from IMPORT table
2) For every record there is an attempted insert to PROD table in a TRY-CATCH check to see whether the record would pass all the primary key and foreign key constrains in PROD table
3) Only those that pass the TRY-CATCH check gets imported into PROD table
4) Every row gets logged into a separate LOG table, either with a comment like "Import OK" or "Error: foreign key violation in field 'my_id'"
The thing is, the procedure runs fine when I'm importing several thousands of records, but when it comes to hundreds of thousands, the speed becomes an issue, as I currently get 20 records per second and slowing...
There is no other code in that procedure, no queries. Just the Cursor cycle and the try-catch check.
PS: I'm using MS SQL Server 2005.
25 Millions Records Insert Operations Takes Around More Than 3 Hrs

I am using SQL Server Standard Edition with good HardWare configuration.
In one of table i am inserting around 25 millions records and that takes time around more than 3 hrs.
same thing is happening while fetching records from that table.
this database contains only single file group i.e primary
and that table contains .. Clustered as well as non clustered index.
it doesnot have any Triggers.
How do i increase this performance.
Paritioning of table cannot be use in SQL Server Standard Edition.
Or Dropping all non clustered index before insert operation will improve my performance.
Please suggest me.

Is there a SQL call or some other way "scripted" way to create a database in SQL 7.0? We have an application that runs on a client's local database and we want them to be able to run a package that creates the database (as opposed to an administrator logging onto their database and doing it manually through the wizard). There are commands to detach and attach databases(i.e. move them) but not to create them.

Can I Insert/Update Large Text Field To Database Without Bulk Insert?
Nov 14, 2007I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind. I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while. Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.

Aug 21, 2006I created an application based on an existing database, I made a lot of changes to the database, now I need to create scripts in the new database to use to update the old database. For example, I added 15 fields to 1 of the tables. Is there a way to use Tasks -> Generate Scripts to create a script that will check the existance of each column and create it if it does not exist? I tried multiple ways of doing this, but it will only create columns for tables that do not exist in the old database. If a table exists, none of the new columns are added.
I may be going about doing this wrong. The main goal I am tying to accomplish is to get all of the data that is in the old database (It was in use while the new one was being developed so there is a lot of data in the old database that I need to have in the new one) into the new one.
Am I better off creating a blank database, then exporting all of the data from the old database to the new one? Will this create any problems with my Primary Keys (The are all auto-increment Integers)?

Hi all,
Could someone tell me how to get the data from all tables of the database in the form of insert script? We are moving our databse from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. The scripts for the Database, Tables, Views , Procedures, Functions have been obtained and it is only the data that is remaining. Some are small tables with 5 to 6 columns but there are some with 50 odd columns. A friend of mine told me about a procedure that returns a dataset with INSERT statements by passing a table name as a parameter. Such procedure would be of great help.

If not - is there any way to copy some data from one database to another - like tables and their content (or partial content) ?

It has been called "upsert". From wikipedia:
The SQL-like UPSERT statement inserts a record to a table in a database if the record does not exist; if the record already exists, an update operation is performed. This is not a standard SQL statement, but it is frequently used to abbreviate the equivalent pseudo-code. The term upsert is a portmanteau of update and insert and is common slang among database hackers. The SQL:2003 defines a MERGE statement that provides similar functionality.

Other ETL tools I am aware of support this opreation with pre-built functionality that only requires the developer to enter the key columns for the target and choices for how to handle the data when rows with matching keys are found in the stream and the target (ignore, update).
Is there an SSIS way to do this without resorting to hand coded SQL or script? Given that this is likely to be needed for many of the "fact" tables in a schema, it will end up being a _lot_ of SQL or script to write and maintain.

Backup And Restore Operations Are Not Allowed On Database Tempdb

SQL 2005 SP2. Upgraded from 2000 and migrated maintenance plan. I am now getting an error when running the maintenance plan for all System databases:
failed with the following error: "Backup and restore operations are not allowed on database tempdb.
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

My organization is required to ETL millions of rows of medical insurance claims data per month into our data structures from many different external systems. The data structures vary tremendously between the different source systems.
We need to develop an efficient "upsert" algorithm: e.g. when a new row arrives from a particular source system determine:
a: does a row with an identical unique natural key (often a composite) already exist in our system?
b: if "a" above is true, is any non-key data in the newly arrived row different from the existing row with the same key?
c: depending on the results of test a and b above, perform either an insert or update.
So we need to develop an internal "upsert" logic solution. We also want to have a solution that will support a generalized solution as early as possible in the data processing.
Therefore, we are considering applying two identical MD5 hashing algorithms (probably C or C# extended stored procs) to each incoming source row (and a one time generation of the two hashes for all legacy loaded rows). One hash will be created from the unique natural key for each row, and one will be created from all the remaining columns in the row. Together these two MD5 hashes should allow us to perform comparisons on all newly arrived vs. previously loaded data, and reliably determine results of tests "a" and "b" above.
This approach also supports the requirement that the code that performs the upsert logic be generalized as early as possible for all different source systems, as the actual test logic will be identical for all source data and independant of the custom logic used to generate the MD5 hashes for each unique source structure.
Is there a better way? How do others approach this problem? What kind of performance impact can be expected from the xp calls?

i have completed the GUI. i have labels on the left side of the form and a text box for each of those labels on the right side of the form. i have the two dropdown boxes that you have helped me create and bind. now im stuck on how to start the code to get this all working. i know what i need it to do (pseudocode) but dont know how to write the code for it. these books and online sources, really dont say where to put things, they just give examples, not stating where to place it.

I have seen triggers that do this kind of thing on a table level. Can this be done with a trigger or a stored procedure on a database level? If so some kind of example or syntax would be great.

Several Different Errors When Creating And Running SSIS Package. Package Runs Successfuly Sometimes.

I am in the process of moving from a 32-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054) to a 64-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054 with 4 CPUs and 8GB of memory on Win 2003 SP2) and the process has been very frustrating to say the least. I am having a problem with packages that I created on my 64-bit SQL Server. I am importing a few tables from the 32-SQL Server into the 64-bit SQL Server using the Task --> Import to create the package.
Sometimes when I am creating a package I get the following error in a message box:
SQL Server Import and Export Wizard
The SSIS Runtime object could not be created. Verify that DTS.dll is available and registered. The wizard cannot continue and it will terminate.
Additional information: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. (System.Windows.Forms)
Other times when I run a package that has run successfully before I get the following error:
Faulting application dtexecui.exe, version 9.0.3042.0, stamp 45cd726d, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault address 0x025d23f0.
Other times I get this error message:
.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1433 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FFEE24) (80131506)
And still other times
The package appears to hang when running. By this I mean that the Package Execution Progress shows progress up to a point then it just stops. (The package takes about 17 seconds to run normally) CPU usage is at 1% and the package cannot be stopped.
I have deleted and re-created the package several times and I have also re-installed the service pack on the SQL Server (9.0.3054) but that did not help.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to try?

I am new to SSIS. I followed the direction of the tutorial Creating Simple ETL Tutorial package in BooksOnline. I have tried more than five times and have done exactly as suggested in the tutorial but it does not work.

I get these warnings and finally fails:
1)[Lookup [30]] Error: Row yielded no match during lookup.
2) [Lookup [30]] Error: The "component "Lookup" (30)" failed because error code 0xC020901E occurred, and the error row disposition on "output "Lookup Output" (32)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.
3) [DTS.Pipeline] Error: The ProcessInput method on component "Lookup" (30) failed with error code 0xC0209029. The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running.
4) [DTS.Pipeline] Error: Thread "WorkThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0209029.
Can someone help me with this tutorial error? or Am I doing something wrong.

Nov 15, 2006Hola!I'm currently building a site that uses an external database to store all the product details, and an internal database that will act as a cache so that we don't have to keep hitting the external database to retrieve the products every time a customer requests a list.What I need to do is retrieve all these products from External and insert them into Internal if they don't exist - if they do already exist then I have to update Internal with new prices, number in stock etc.I was wondering if there was a way to insert / update these products en-mass without looping through and building a new insert / update query for every product - there could be thousands at a time!Does anyone have any ideas or could you point me in the right direction?I'm thinking that because I need to check if the products exist in a different data store than the original source, I don't have a choice but to loop through them all.Cheers,G.
