Setting Up/accesing Database In VB Codebehind

Jul 9, 2006

Hey All,
I'm very new to ASP.NET and have recently begun using the databinding functionality.  So far, all I've had to do is drag and drop the various controls and then use the data source wizard to set up an appropriate query.  However, now I've got a bit of a different need.  In the VB codebehind, i need to be able to ask whether something is true in the database, and then if it is, carry out functions.  So, for example, what I need to do is:
if (SQLStatement "Select charttype FROM charts WHERE datasource = " & dropdownlist1.selecteditem.tostring()) Then
'do whatever
end if
Trouble is, I don't know how I would go about binding the data so that I could access it in this way.  Any guidance would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,J Rankin

Merge Replication And Photos

Hi,

I am developing an application which will take photos using Windows mobile and upload those pictures in the main server using merge replication .
Is there any rule of thumb that suggests the size of photos that has to get merged? Like the number of photos , size of photos , quality of photos , the practical transfer rate over GPRS technology in U.S ?

Please advise...

Accesing Package Variable In Conditional Component

Oct 6, 2006

Hello Experts,

I am trying to load data to a sql table from flat file..I have a script component which will validate the data. I am also firing the errros when data validation fails. Once I encounter an error I want the whole package to be aborted. What I have done is declared a variable called errorcount (Scope :Package) and I am incrmenting this variable everytime an error is raised and next I have a Conditional Split which will check if this variable count is greater than 0 if yes I will not update the table. This is the only way I think this will work.

error I am getting is :The collection of variables locked for read and write access is not available outside of PostExecute.

I understand they r in the same data flow thats the reason I get this error but how can I by pass it ?

MY dataflow-> Flat File Source-Script Comp-Condtional Split-(If errorCount==0)-SQL Table

How can I redo the dataflow so that this err is not raised.

I have tried to add an output column (blnContinue) and use that in conditional stmt but as this is stored at row level values which have blnContinue as true are getting processed, I dont want this I just want to stop the package execution even if a single validation fails

Pardon my long question

Appreciate your help in advance

Photos In SQL Server: Store As Images Or Strings With Path && Filename?

Apr 4, 2008

Hi, for my photo album database I'm trying to decide whether to store the actual photos as images in the db or whether to leave them in file directories with just the path & filename in the db. As a beginner in this field I don't know how either of these options compare (e.g. in terms of performance, complexity, flexibility and maintainablity) so any advice on the pros and cons of each would be appreciated.

Three Table Join - Display Newest Comments Left On Photos Created By Members

Jul 6, 2014

I am trying to tweak some code which is used to display the newest comments left on photos created by my members.

The existing code is this:

SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC

So the latest comment left was for photo #210879 from user "Cla" (redacted user names). The 2nd newest comment would be for photo #211072 from a member named "mo". pdate is a date field

However for the script I have coded I don't want all of the photo comments to show up. This is because I use access levels based on the type of location (higher levels mean more restricted galleries). I check the access levels as I go through the recordsets.

I use this method to get the top 15 comments:

SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC

Now I have to use two other tables to determine the access level. Since PHOTOCOMMENTS is just a list of photo #'s and the people who left comments for those photos, I need to:

a) determine what location the photo is from and
b) determine the access level of that location

I use: select creator, access from locations where id=(select dir from photos where id="&pnumber&")"

This is a two step process as you can see. The first part is:

select dir from photos where id=(pnumber)

ID is the same value as pnumber seen in PHOTOCOMMENTS. That is to say PHOTOS.ID = PHOTOCOMMENTS.PNUMBER

If I haven't confused you yet, the executed code for the first example would be:

select dir from photos where id=210879

which would get me a value for DIR. DIR is the location number which would be:

select creator, access from locations where id=(dir value)

Just to simplify it a bit....

There are three tables (shown below)

PHOTOCOMMENTS
PHOTOS
LOCATIONS

I need to: SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC (first table shown)

but then also

select creator, access from locations (The last table shown)
where id=(select dir from photos where id="&pnumber&")"

So the first table PHOTOCOMMENTS has to also join PHOTOS table where PHOTOS.DIR = PHOTOCOMMENTS.PNUMBER in order to get the value of "DIR" and then DIR is joined to the LOCATIONS tables where PHOTOS.DIR = LOCATIONS.ID

Here is the actual code, which I am trying to make into a single SQL command

strSQL = "SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC"
set ors = oconn.Execute(strSQL)
tl = 0
do until ors.eof or tl > 15
' until we have 15 results because not every recordset will be of the proper security level

[Code] ....

Bonus points if you can also get it to select from LOCATIONS only WHERE userlevel >= 2

Need Help On Creating A Database

Nov 21, 2003

Sorry, I'm a newbie out there when it comes to creating database. I currently have an ASP.Net project which requires a database. I spent the past few days thinking about how to create a proper database for the application but to no avail. I think tis thread might be out of point for tis forum, but i am really in need of help.

Here goes the storyline of my database:

The project is an online project management system, meant for students to submit their deliverables (reports, eg. Minutes, agenda, project monitor chart) Lecturers will access the web application to grade the student’s submission. The application must allow administrators to add in new subjects. When a new subject is added, the subject leader will set a dateline for a particular module to be submitted. Eg, minutes dateline. Once the dateline is due, the system will inform the lecturers in charge of who/which group did not submit the module. Lecturers and subject leaders can then generate warning letters to be sent via email to the students involved. Lecturers and subject leaders will be able to make announcements through the system as well.

A student can either submit his/her work as an individual or as a group.
A student will be studying more than 1 subject.
A subject will consist of more than 1 module.
Every module will have a dateline for its submission.
Students can make more than 1 submission for each module.
Students belong to different groups/classes for different subjects.
For different modules, there will be different fields to be inserted into the database.
Example, in the “Minutes module, the student will have to be able to key in the objectives, the date of the meeting, the venue, its members, absent members, actual minutes, action by and meeting end time.

In the “Project monitor chart module, the student will have to key in the week/date, the name of the member, task involved, as well as the status.

When a new subject is created, the subject leader will have to specify the percentage of each different module. (Eg, Exams – 40%, Term test 15%, and so on.)

A subject will also be taught by more than 1 lecturer. So subject leader will specify the lecturers teaching that particular subject.

I hope someone out there can help me out on the construction of a database for the above storyline. Thanks a lot.

Creating A New Database

Apr 12, 2004

I created a database using the following command :

create database krish on (Name='krish', filename='C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLdatakrish.mdf', size=25, maxsize=50,filegrowth=5%)

This actually created the database. Now, I wanted to view this database info being stored inside the SQL Server system tables. I looked at "sysdatabases" table and found an entry as expected for "krish" but I could not trace where the info corresponding to the size of the database was stored ie.25MB . (I looked ad "sysdevices" but couldn't find any entry for the newly created database).

In which table is it stored ?

Any help is appreciated.

Need Help For Creating A SQL DataBase

Nov 26, 2007

Hello everybody, my name is Andy,

I need help for creating a database, it's an exercise for my school, we just began to learn SQL, about entities, relationships (one to one, one to many...), creating tables, but the thing is i don't know where to start, i think i need to practise but it's hard to transform a text into a database, i think i need some help from you guys and i hope you will help me.

I give you the exercise, and what i found :

Project wants users to be able to initiate debates, post articles and get to the achieved items. A user should be able to write as many articles as desired after having register with login and passport

However articles should contain these references for more http links, URL, summary of the content; 1 or more books, article, doc, case studies …

1)Identify the data objects and relationship and draft the initial ER Diagram with entities and relationships. Normalize model as far as you can

2)write the SQL query / link (url) and corresponding summary

About the 1)
Entities : users --> login and password associated (one to one relationships one user = one login/password)
Articles --> associated with the users accounts (one to many)

I am not sure for creating the different tables, im a bit lost... :s

About the 2) totally lost, i need the 1) to make the SQL Query (i know a bit about queries)

I hope you will help me, i am a beginner in SQL (only one course taken) and it is our first exercise, thanks for your help all!!!

Creating A Database

Oct 16, 2007

I'm rusty with database design just yet so trying to improve. This is my way of creating a database in Access but before i swap over to SQL structure i would like a good foundation.

Overall the way i looked at it was you had to have one table that held all your results that users entered and the query took care of the rest??? So for example (Red indicates a Primary Key)

tbl_Products
ProductID
ProductCode
ProductDescription
ProductUnit
ProductQuantity
ProductPrice

tbl_Month
MonthID
Month

tbl_year
YearID
Year

tbl_Department
DepartmentID
DepartmentName

tbl_Employee
EmployeeID
EmployeeFirstname
EmployeeLastname

tbl_Orders
OrderID
OrderProductCode
OrderProductDescription
OrderProductUnit
OrderProductQty
OrderProductPrice
OrderMonth
OrderYear
OrderDepartment
OrderEmployee

I then have the following relationships (1 to Many):

ProductCode (1) - OrderProductCode (Many)
MonthID (1) - OrderMonth (Many)
YearID (1) - OrderYear (Many)
DepartmentID (1) - OrderDepartment (Many)
EmployeeID (1) - OrderEmployee (Many)

Ok your'e probably thinking what if i need to add another Employee or how would i retrieve Employee or month details - to add another Employee the user would have to enter the details on another form which allows them to add another Employee. To select an Employee on the Order Form i would create a combo box which allows the user to pick an Employee.

To create a query to pull product Code, Description, qty, price and Employee name (to see which employee placed the order) i would add the following to a query

ProductCode (From tbl_Products)
OrderProductDescription (From tbl_Orders)
OrderProductQty (From tbl_Orders)
OrderProductPrice (From tbl_Orders)
EmployeeFirstname (From tbl_Employee)
EmployeeLastname (From tbl_Employee)

This is the way i thought you should create a database but i'm a developer therefore only work with databases when the query is created by a db admin. Guess i have something wrong here?? if so how would you go about creating this type of database? Overall purpose of the database is usually a user entering data and retrieving data every so often.

Thanks in advance.
