BlobColumn.GetBlobData() With Data Length &&> Integer Length (32767)

Mar 27, 2008

For those of you who would like to reference my exact issue, I'm dealing with the RSExecution SSIS package at the "Update Parameters" data flow task, at the Script Component.

The script tries to split parameter data into name and value. Unfortunately, I have several reports that are passing parameters that are very large. One example has over 65,000 characters all in the normal "&paramname=value&parm2=value..." format.

The code in the script works fine until it gets to one of these very large parameter sets. I have figured out what is causing the issue. Here's some code:

Dim paramBlob as Byte()
paramBlob = Row.BlobColumn.GetBlobData(0, Row.BlobColumn.Length)

The second parameter of the .GetBlobData function takes an INTEGER as its count! Therefore, no matter what kind of datatype I pass to the string that the script will later split, it will be limited to 32767 characters.

THIS IS A PROBLEM!!!

Does anyone know a workaround for this issue? I need all of the parameter data to be reported, and I would hate to have to skip over rows like this. Also, if I'm missing something, please fill me in!

Thanks for your help in advance,
LOSTlover

Data Access :: Validation For Length Of The Character Data Types

Jun 10, 2015

I Have a table with #Sample like below

=================================
#Sample
id int,
SSN varchar(20),
State varchar(2)

Sample Data:

ID SSN STATE
1 999-000-000 AB
2 979-000-000 BC
3 995-000-000 CD
=================================

We used filter logic based on the SSN & State.

We are passing these values through variables like

Declare @State varchar(2)
Declare @SSN varchar(20)

While run time these values are lets suppose @SSN = '999-000-000' & @State='ABC'

Now the Result is displayed with the state data Like 'AB' only.

Output: 1 999-000-000 AB

instead it should give system generated error.

Here I have 2 Questions:
1. Why it is taking 1st 2 Charecters?
2. Why it does not have any system generated for length?

I can do validation with Length function for these 2 variables however if have 100 variables then it should not feasible case. So, what is the reason behind?

Transact SQL :: Excel Data Import Truncate Data Length To 255

Jul 29, 2015

I am trying to import data from an excel Sheet to SQL Database using OPENROWSET. After import I found that all the cells containing data of more than 2000 length got truncated to  255 characters only. I tried finding the solution and found that We need to have the data with length more than 255 in first 8 rows of Excel sheet. It worked for me also. But In real scenario the data that I cant do the manual work on excel. I tried out with Dot Net utility and SSIS package also but the truncation is still the issue.

CommandParameters.length Don't Match Parametervalues.length

Feb 24, 2008

I am trying to narrow down this problem.  Basically, I added 3 columns to my article table.  It holds the article id, article text, author and so on.  I tested my program before adding the additional field to the program.  The program works fine and I can add an article, and edit the same article even though it skips over the 3 new fields in the database.  It just puts nulls into those columns. So, now I have added one of the column names I added in the database to the code. I changed my businesslogic article.vb code and the addarticle.aspx, as well as the New article area in the addartivle.aspx.vb  page. The form now has an additional textbox field for the ShortDesc which is a short description of the article. This is the problem now:  The command parameters.length is 9 and there are 10 parameter values.  Right in the middle of the 10 values is the #4 value which I inserted into the code.  It says Nothing when I hover my mouse over the code after my program throws the exception in 17 below.  Why is  command parameters.length set to 9 instead of 10?  Why isn't it reading the information for value 4 like all the other values and placing it's value there and calculating 10 instead of 9? Where are these set in the program?  Sounds to me like they are hard coded in someplace and I need to change them to match everything else.  1 ' This method assigns an array of values to an array of SqlParameters.2 ' Parameters:3 ' -commandParameters - array of SqlParameters to be assigned values4 ' -array of objects holding the values to be assigned5 Private Overloads Shared Sub AssignParameterValues(ByVal commandParameters() As SqlParameter, ByVal parameterValues() As Object)6 7 Dim i As Integer8 Dim j As Integer9 10 If (commandParameters Is Nothing) AndAlso (parameterValues Is Nothing) Then11 ' Do nothing if we get no data12 Return13 End If14 15 ' We must have the same number of values as we pave parameters to put them in16 If commandParameters.Length <> parameterValues.Length Then17 Throw New ArgumentException("Parameter count does not match Parameter Value count.") 18 End If19 20 ' Value array21 j = commandParameters.Length - 122 For i = 0 To j23 ' If the current array value derives from IDbDataParameter, then assign its Value property24 If TypeOf parameterValues(i) Is IDbDataParameter Then25 Dim paramInstance As IDbDataParameter = CType(parameterValues(i), IDbDataParameter)26 If (paramInstance.Value Is Nothing) Then27 commandParameters(i).Value = DBNull.Value28 Else29 commandParameters(i).Value = paramInstance.Value30 End If31 ElseIf (parameterValues(i) Is Nothing) Then32 commandParameters(i).Value = DBNull.Value33 Else34 commandParameters(i).Value = parameterValues(i)35 End If36 Next37 End Sub ' AssignParameterValues38 39 40 41

SQL Server Data Length Problem

Jun 9, 2006

Hi all,

I want to enter the below data into a database...

PHP Code:

 insert into price_list(price_list, price_list_note) values('MDC2 Close','This price list represents all close prices sent electronically by the vendor (FT InteractiveData ("IC")) for all US Debt securities. IDC data can be looked up through the website or through a Geneva price query');

However the price_list_note data gets truncated. Only first half gets inserted into the database.

Why is this?

I'm using Data Type Varchar with Length=8000
Also tried text(16)

Any ideas?? Thanks.

Data Type And Length In SQL Server

Nov 4, 2005

Hello folks!

I have written a stored proc that selects data from this table:
A1 AA
A2 BB
B1 AAA
B2 BBB

and puts it another table in this manner:
A1 AA BB
A2 AA BB
B1 AAA BBB
B2 AAA BBB

In short, I wanted to concatenate data in the second column.

My question is for some reason, SQL Server is limiting the length of the string to only 256 characters, even though I have defined the local variables in the storeds proc as varchar(1000) and the table has that field defined as text.

Any ideas how I can get around this problem?

Thanks!

SQLserver 2005 -data Length 'max'

Jan 11, 2007

Hi all,

I ve few queries regarding SQLServer 2005, kindly help me to understand the things,

1. Datatypes like nvarchar, varchar, varbinary use 'max' to define their datalength,

a. is this 'max' always has the value of 2^31-1 ?
b. what other data types in sqlserver 2005 can use 'max' to define their datalength?

2. I defined a table (say 't') with a column 'name' of datatype nvarchar(max), now tried to execute the below query in the SQLServer client,

select column_name, data_type, character_maximum_length from information_schema.columns where table_name='t'

the result is,

+--------------+------------+--------------------------+
| column_name | data_type | character_maximum_length |
+--------------+------------+--------------------------+
| name | nvarchar | -1 |
+--------------+------------+--------------------------+

The question is why the datatype length is returned as -1, what happened to 'max'?
is there any other way to retrieve the actual data length (ie., 'max') from the table definition?

Does anybody know an answer to this problem ?

String Data, Length Mismatch When Using Linked Server

Oct 16, 2007

I have a sp which works fine from my local database.
I move the procedure to a different database and modify it to access my data via linked server and I get the following:

provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Production" returned message "String data, length mismatch".
Msg 7421, Level 16, State 2, Line 27
Cannot fetch the rowset from OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Production". .

Now I've seen references to this error message for ODBC, but as I said above, the same SP works fine if it goes against local data views. I am working with rather long concatenated strings using nvarchar(max) as the data type.

I've tried cast() on just about everything to no avail.

Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks!

Integration Services Data Types Maximum Length

Apr 17, 2007

Hi,

Is there a way in-code to determine the maximum length of a Integration Services Data Type.

I need to determine based on the data type what the maximum length of a column is IN-CODE.

However, the column.Length property only gives me a length for DT_WSTR and DT_STR values. This is the only property that would seem to remotely give me the right answer.

I need to know the maximum lengths in columns for DT_BOOL, DT_CY, DT_I2, DT_I4, DT_I8, DT_NUMERIC, and DT_UI1. I can always hard-code these values into my program, but that makes no sense. There has to be some sort of way to determine what the maximum possible length of these values are.

For numeric values I could use the column.Precision value but that still leaves with with a lot of data types without a maximum length.

Union All Data Flow Component Does Not Update Length Downstream

Jul 24, 2007

I have found not very good behavior of Union All Data Flow Component.

I have Script component and about 30 Union All Data Flow Components. I have string field named 'MyField'. Legth of the field is 15 characters. The field appears first in Script component (defined as 'MyField' Output collumn) and present in all Union All Data Flow Components. I need to change field length from 15 to 10. In Script Transformator Editor of Script component I changed 'MyField' Output collumn Length property value set it to 10. But length of the field remains 20 in all Union All Data Flow Component downstream and no errors no warnings appears. To fix this i recreated (deleted and added again) 'MyField' in all Union All 30 Data Flow Components.

If extend length from, say, 15 to 20 in the first of Union All Data Flow Components error sign appears

"Error 1 Validation error. Data Flow Task: Union All [22]: The metadata for "input column "MyField" (144)" does not match the metadata for the associated output column."

and only recreation of the field in all Union All Data Flow Components can help to fix it.

May be someone knows other solution to fix such behavior?

Integration Services :: DefaultBufferMaxRows - Is It Determined By Row Length Of Data Flow Task Source Or Destination

Oct 18, 2015

We have a single generic SSIS package that is used to import several hundred iSeries tables into SQL. I am not looking to rewrite the process. But I am looking for ways to improve performance.

I have tried retain same connection, maximum insert commit size, lock table (tablock), removed some large columns, played with the log file location and size, and now I am working to tweak the defaultbuffermaxrows.

To describe the data flow task - there are six data flows tasks (dft)  working at the same time. Each dtf has their own list of iSeries tables and columns and the corresponding generic SQL table names. Each dtf determines their list of tables based on the number of columns to import. So there is dft30 (iSeries table has 1-30 columns to import), dtf60 (iSeries table has 31-60 columns to import), etc. The destination SQL tables are generically called Staging30, Staging60, etc. Each column in the generic Staging tables are varchar(100). The dtfs are comprised of an OLE DB Source and an OLE DB Destination.

The OLE DB Source uses a SQL Command from Variable to build a SELECT statement. The OLE DB Source uses a connection manager that uses an IBM iAccess IBMDA400 provider.  The SQL Command ends up looking like this for the dtf30. This specific example is importing from the iSeries table TDACLR and it only has two columns so it will be copied to the Staging30 table.

select TCREAS AS C1,TCDESC AS C2,0 AS C3,0 AS C4,0 AS C5,0 AS C6,0 AS C7,0 AS C8,0 AS C9,0 AS C10,0 AS C11,0 AS C12,0 AS C13,0 AS C14,0 AS C15,0 AS C16,0 AS C17,0 AS C18,0 AS C19,0 AS C20,0 AS C21,0 AS C22,0 AS C23,0 AS C24,0 AS C25,0 AS C26,0 AS C27,0 AS
C28,0 AS C29,0 AS C30,''TDACLR'' AS T0 from Store01.TDACLR

The OLD DB Source variable value looks like the following, but I am not showing the full 30 columns

select cast(0 AS varchar(100)) AS C1,cast(0 AS varchar(100)) AS C2,cast(0 AS varchar(100)) AS C3,cast(0 AS varchar(100)) AS C4,cast(0 AS varchar(100)) AS C5, ... cast(0 AS varchar(100)) AS C30.

The OLE DB Destination uses OpenRowSet Using FastLoad From Variable. The insert into Staging30 ends up looking like this.

insert bulk STAGE30([C1] varchar(100) ,[C2] varchar(100) ,[C3] varchar(100) ,[C4] varchar(100) ,[C5] varchar(100) , ...  ,[C30] varchar(100) ,[T0] varchar(20)

Of course we then copy and transform the Staging30 data to the SQL table that equals T0.

But back to defaultbuffermaxrows. Previously the dtfs had default values of 10000 for DefaultBufferMaxRows and 10485760 for DefaultBufferSize. I added a SQL task to SUM the iSeries column sizes, TCREAS and TCDESC in this example, and set the DefaultBufferMaxRows by dividing the SUM of the columns max_length into 10485760. But I did not see a performance improvement. Do you think that redefining the columns as varchar(100) for the insert is significant? Should I possibly SUM the actual number of columns (2) as 2x100 or SUM the 30x100?

All of my tables are set up as decimal (19,2) along with all the params in my stored procs (a lot!).  Is there an easy way to change all of these in 1 swoop?
Thanks in advance,
Stephen.
