I am currently in the process of migrating data from Sybase to Sql server and would like to know how to test the data migrated.
As of now, we took one table data from both source and destination and compared it in Excel to check if the data migrated looks good (note, we used SSIS to migrate data). However, I would like to check if there are any other best & easy ways to apprach data validation post migration.

Hi,
I'm doing a migration from Sybase SQL Anywhere to SQL Server 2005.
This is one of the query that doesn't work:
select card_nr as cCard,
card_type as cType,
tab_cards_profile.profile_name as cProfile_name,
dbo.fn_name_pdcode( cCard, cType, tab_history.system_code ) as cCard_name,
dbo.fn_card_date_entry(cExit, cCard, cType, tab_history.system_code ) as cEntry,
evn_date+evn_time as cExit,
tab_history.profile_id,
payment_type,
dbo.fn_name_pdcode( param1, payment_type, tab_history.system_code ) as cPay_name,
param1,
datediff(minute, cEntry, cExit) as durata,
amount
from tab_history
LEFT OUTER JOIN tab_cards_profile ON ( tab_history.profile_id = tab_cards_profile.profile_id AND tab_history.card_type = tab_cards_profile.profile_type)
LEFT OUTER JOIN tab_personal_data ON tab_personal_data.name = cCard_name
Both the functions called
dbo.fn_name_pdcode( cCard, cType, tab_history.system_code ) as cCard_name,
dbo.fn_card_date_entry(cExit, cCard, cType, tab_history.system_code ) as cEntry
seems that can't work if I use as parameters alias of columns... This could be a problem; in sybase ASA that query can be executed.
there is any work around to help this query runs?
Thaks..

I am currently working for the Sybase to Sql Server migration project and have been able to test migrate few tables using SSIS. After migration, i was doing some data comparision and could see the date formats are different between Sybase and Sql server. However, there are no issues with data like day in sybase becoming month in Sql server except the formats are different.
Do I need to act on this date formats? Not sure if this would cause any issues in front end application that will consume sql server date data.

Hi experts;
I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))
Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„¢')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„¢ = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„¢"
„¢ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„¢')
and select again voila i see
"Œ€„¢"
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks

I know that there are tools like Lumigent, but an wondering about theinternal facilities to track events such as table creation, securityoperations (add login, add role), and such.Under Sybase, there is a set of procedures that permit you to settheses events and to record the results for later extraction andanalysis. The Profiler seems to have a lot of the same functionality but thisappears to be more along the lines of running a monitor. Can the events be tracked without Profiler running? Can the events being tracked be recorded in the system of SQLServerlogs?

Greetings,
I am using SQL Server 2005 and I want a clue if there is some good built-in support to do the following.
I want to transfer all the data from one source database to another destination database having same number to tables and schema like source database. I also want to ensure that the old data on the destination database should be secure too.
I have an idea that this can be done through SSIS in coding but can anyone give me a guide, tip, link, sample code that can be helpful.
Thanx a million in advance.

Hi all. I'll say from the get go that I'm no SQL guru. I'm primarily a web dev who has been given the data jobs kind of by default so I'm definitely no DBA.
Anyway, having established my noobness, I have encountered an issue. The employer recently decided to upgrade our databases from 2000 to 2005 and I have been tasked to migrate the data from old to new. I have discovered the Import/Export Wizard and got it to move all the data in a dev database we use...but there was one problem. It seems that the tables in 2000 that had columns designated as identity columns do not have the identity attribute when they arrive in 2005.
I haven't figured a way to alter them to give them that attribute once they're in 2005 so I'm wondering if there's something I can do/change in the import process that would retain the identity property of the columns if I were to re-import them.
This is my first migration attempt so dumping it and starting over is no great loss...but any help would be most appreciated.

Hi ,
I have a requirement to migrate the data from an existing MS Access database to a newly designed SQL Express 2005 database . Need less to say the table structures in both are totally different.I would like to know how can i handle a scenerio where i want to map table A in access to table B in SQL express (the schema of both different and the number of columns can vary too) , how do i migrate the data from table A in Access to Table B in SQL express using SSMA?
Also i would appreciate if some one can tell me is SSMA the right tool for this , or should i use the upsizing wizard of MS Access. The constraint here is that the data needs to be migrated to a completely new schema. I just need to migrate data only and no other objects.
Thanks

Hi,
I'm new to SSIS.
I want to migrate data from Oracle Database to SQL Server 2005 by using SSIS Package. Client wants to migrate just data not schema. Schema is already there for SQL Server, generated through script.
I tried to migrate the data by using import-export wizard in SSIS. But, its asking for creating new tables when migrating data.
I want to migrate data in existing tables, without dropping already existed tables or creating new tables.
any suggestions ?
Regards,
Khurram

I am trying to import data from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005
The Data schemas are the same in both (tables, relationships, key and triggers).
Using the wizard I am trying to import data from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. The issue I face is to manage the Idenity columns. I do not want the identity values from the SQL 2000 DB which may be at say 5000, instead I want to use the identity values from the SQL 2005 database which will problably start at 1
Is there a way to do this, should I use a custom query instead of a direct table dump. If using a custom query do I need to just specify a Select query or does it have to be a specific "INSERT INTO Table ..." type query
If I do import the data directly with Identity "ON" how can I advance the identity column value to current +1 on the SQL 2005 table.
Thanks

When using AquaData or JDBC (inet tds driver), when doing an insert using SqlServer 2005, I get error "String or binary data would be truncated" when the data is actually OK. There are no triggers, etc. that would confuse the situation. It works fine in SqlServer 2000.
The scenario is as follows:
Create table:
create table test3 (
name varchar (18) ,
tbname varchar (18)
)
Create and populate table:
create table maxtable (
tablename varchar (18) not null,
[...]
)
Try to insert into test3:
insert into test3 (name, tbname)
select i.name, o.name
from dbo.sysindexes i, sysobjects o, maxtable m
where i.indid > 0 and i.indid < 255
and i.id = o.id and i.indid = 1
and o.name = lower(m.tablename)
And I get the error "String or binary data would be truncated." The values being selected for i.name and o.name have maximum length of 18. There are other rows in sysindexes and sysobjects with longer values, but they are not being selected.
The error does not occur with SQL Server Management Studio, and does not occur using SqlServer 2000.

Hi all,
I ve few queries regarding SQLServer 2005, kindly help me to understand the things,
1. Datatypes like nvarchar, varchar, varbinary use 'max' to define their datalength,
a. is this 'max' always has the value of 2^31-1 ?
b. what other data types in sqlserver 2005 can use 'max' to define their datalength?
2. I defined a table (say 't') with a column 'name' of datatype nvarchar(max), now tried to execute the below query in the SQLServer client,
select column_name, data_type, character_maximum_length from information_schema.columns where table_name='t'
the result is,
+--------------+------------+--------------------------+
| column_name | data_type | character_maximum_length |
+--------------+------------+--------------------------+
| name | nvarchar | -1 |
+--------------+------------+--------------------------+
The question is why the datatype length is returned as -1, what happened to 'max'?
is there any other way to retrieve the actual data length (ie., 'max') from the table definition?
-Sn

Hi, I am attempting to create SSIS packages to extract data from our AS/400 DB2 databases and populate tables for analysis and reporting in SQLServer. We have recently installed a new 2005 SQL Server to replace our existing 2000 databases. I have several DTS packages setup to connect to the 400s and copy the needed data to SQL2000 and these work great but do not transition to SSIS very well. I can get my SSIS packages to work if I create a seperate data flow task for each table but that does not seem appropriate for a tool like SSIS. I would think that what I am attempting is a very common thing to do. Maybe other enumerators could be used but I have not been able to get it to work.
I am trying to use a foreach loop, currently with a forech item enumerator, to first truncate the table on the SQL Server database using an Execute SQL task, and the to use a Data Flow task to refresh the data using an ole db source and destination. I have the truncate portion working, but when I try to setup the Ole db source using a variable it tells me I have no input columns. I have a variable from the forech loop that loops through the table names, this variable is used in a second variable which is set to EvaluateAsExpression with the expression set to the follwoing: "select * from " + @table_name
I have set delayvalidation to true and validateexternalmetadata to false. What do I do in order to get around this issue? Also, how should the old db destination be set so that it load the data into the table specified in the variable?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi All,
I want to connect to SQLExpress database on the network. I can do so using code but I want to use the Data Source Configuration Wizard. It seems this only works for local instances of SQL server. Is this true?
I can connect just fine to the database on the network using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express...for what this is worth.
I have tried to map a drive to the SQL server machine and pick the mdf file but I get the error msg of network path is not supported for database files....I have turned on allow remote connections, allow tcp/ip, named pipes, added sqlserv.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to my firewall exceptions ect..
I want to be able to use Table Adapters, SqlDataAdapters ect. After reading numerous forum questions/ kb articles this seems to be a common problem. I am on the verge of just saying forget it and use MS Access instead.
Thanks in advance!
