Design Time Support For Oracle Db

Dec 22, 2006

Dear all,

i have a question concerning the design time support when accessing different oracle database schemas with SSIS.

I'm using an OLEDB-Connection, and in general everything is working fine. I would like to access two different schemas. One for production and one testing. So i have stored my connection properties in a configuration file, which looks different for prod and test.

I'm not allowed to connect to the oracle db with the user in who's schema the tables are located.
(e.g. schema=prod, my user=readonly)

Normally i must type SQL like: "select * from prod.MyTable" for my production datasource and "select * from test.MyTable" for my test datasource.

In order to clean up my sql i use the oracle "alter session" command. (alter session set current_schema=prod) The command is stored with the connection properties within my configuration file.

All of my packages start with this sql statement for the oracle datasource. (The connection property RetainSameConnection is true and the package property DelayValidation is set.)

So the solution is working fine.

But during the development i have a problem. When crating a datasource i can't retrieve the metadata infromation or build sql with the provided tools, because of "Table of View not found" (ok, the alter session statement is missing)

So does anyone know how to define a alter session for the design time conneciton?
Maybe something with the "Extended Properties" of the connection?

Thanks for your help!
Sven

Database Design/query Design

Feb 13, 2002

Ok, I'm doing a football database for fixtures and stuff. The problem I am having is that in a fixture, there is both a home, and an away team. The tables as a result are something like this:

-------
Fixture
-------
fix_id
fix_date
fix_played

----
Team
----
tem_id
tem_name

-----------
TeamFixture
-----------
fix_id
tem_id
homeorawayteam
goals

It's not exactly like that, but you get the point. The question is, can I do a fixture query which results in one record per fixture, showing both teams details. The first in a hometeam field and the second in an away team field.

Fixture contains the details about the fixture like date and fixture id and has it been played

Team contains team info like team id, name, associated graphic

TeamFixture is the table which links the fixture to it's home and away team.

TeamFixture exists to prevent a many to many type relationship.

Make sense? Sorry if this turns out to be really easy, just can't get my head around it at the mo!

Support For SQL Express2005 My Host Provider Does Not Provide Support?

Dec 5, 2005

Reader Community
I've just started hosting my newly created Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition web site.  Unfortunately the Login group membership functions will not function correctly.  Having contacted the web service hosting provider, They replied: "We do not support SQL express2005.  The only way to use the extra functions of ASP.NET2 such as group membership is if it is using an SQL 2000 database to connect to. "
Is it possible to design web sites with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition that store membership details on an SQL 2000 database?
I've just paid £88 approx. $140 for a years subscription, have I chosen the wrong web service hosting provider?
Should I have designed the web site with a better web site design software tool that also makes designing membership login functionality easy, just as Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 express edition?
Look forward to all comments?
Regards

Argument To Support Database Upgrade From 80 To 90

Mar 16, 2007

I have to build a coherent argument for why we should fix the application to run at compt level 90 instead of just leaving it at 80.

Looking at . . .

Differences Between Lower Compatibility Levels and Level 90

. . . I can't find anything further that tells my why it is in our best interest to do so other than 'Microsoft won't help you until you do'.

Anyone have any good bullet points on this?

How To Build Database To Support User-specified Entities And Attributes?

Jul 23, 2005

I have a database that tracks players for children's sports clubs. I haveincluded representative DDL for this database at the end of this post.A single instance of this database supports multiple clubs. I would like toadd support for letting each club define and store custom information aboutarbitrary entities. Basically, allows the clubs to define custom entities(i.e tables) and associated custom attributes (i.e. fields) that may berelated to existing tables (such as Player and FootballClub) or existingentities. For instance, a club may define a PlayerAssessment entity thatrecords all player assessments. To do this, I plan to support the following use case:1. FootballClub admin creates a new entity and gives it a name anddescription (Entity is only accessible to this FootballClub).2. FootballClub admin indicates that the new entity has a M:1 relationshipwith the Player table (this will add Player_ID as a FK attribute).- {An entity may have no relationships.}- {Relationships are also supported to other entities.}3. FootballClub admin specifies the names and domain/types of any dataattributes (i.e. fields) of the entity.- {An attribute's type may be constrained to a few allowable types likeRelationship, Integer, Float, Currency, Date, Time, DateTime, Name,Description and Memo.}4. System creates entity as specified.A few constraints:1. Any entity defined is "private" to the defining club. Other clubs aren'taware of it although they may define custom entities of their ownwith the same name and attributes. [Perhaps there is a way to sharedefinitions of identical entities?]2. A club doesn't have to define any custom entities.Ideas I've considered:1. Generate DLL and create actual tables- Restrict such customizations such that while admin is setting up entities,no other user is allowed to use the system.- Once entity definition is complete, generate an actual table using DLL.Table and column names might be changed to enforce uniqueness/validityconstraints - this suggests a need for table/column name mapping.- PROS: Easy to implement.- CONS: Doesn't scale since only a limited number of tables can be created.DDL on a live, shared system?. Scary!!All users for all clubs will be locked out while entity iscreated.2. Generate DDL and create actual tables in secondary database(s)- Same as above except that the user tables are created in secondary [,shared] databases.- PROS: Reassurance that DDL is never run on the "core" dataAll users don't have to be locked out.- CONS: Doesn't scale since only a limited number of tables can be created.{ Unless I start creating additional databases too!. }Still needs to DDL on a live, shared system.Has anyone done anything similar?. Any ideas on how it might be done?. Inparticular, is this possible without having to execute DDL on the livedatabase?Kunle=================== BEGIN DDL ===================CREATE TABLE FootballClub (Club_ID int IDENTITY,Name char(80) NOT NULL,Area char(4) NOT NULL,League char(4) NOT NULL,City char(30) NOT NULL,PRIMARY KEY (Club_ID))goexec sp_primarykey FootballClub,Club_IDgoCREATE TABLE Player (Player_ID int IDENTITY,First_Name char(30) NOT NULL,Initials char(30) NULL,Last_Name char(30) NOT NULL,Date_Of_Birth datetime NOT NULL,Position char(4) NULL,Club_ID int NULL,PRIMARY KEY (Player_ID),FOREIGN KEY (Club_ID)REFERENCES FootballClub)goexec sp_primarykey Player,Player_IDgoCREATE TABLE UserAccount (User_ID int IDENTITY,Club_ID int NOT NULL,FullName char(80) NOT NULL,Logon char(20) NOT NULL,PWD_Hash char(60) NOT NULL,PRIMARY KEY (User_ID, Club_ID),FOREIGN KEY (Club_ID)REFERENCES FootballClub)goexec sp_primarykey UserAccount,User_ID,Club_IDgoexec sp_foreignkey Player, FootballClub,Club_IDgoexec sp_foreignkey UserAccount, FootballClub,Club_IDgo=================== END DDL ===================

Can Not Create SQL Mobile Database On Server: The Operating System Does Not Support Encryption

Oct 12, 2007

I have code that creates a SQL Mobile database on a server. It has worked in many environments, but I have one customer experiencing an issue. It will not create the database on their server. I would appreciate any thoughts.

The exact error message I get is "the operating system does not support encryption"

I am getting it on the line: SQLCeEngine.CreateDatabase()

Here is the code:
SQLCeEngine = New SqlServerCe.SqlCeEngine(SQLConnectionString)
ReturnValue += ": Declare new"
SQLCeEngine.CreateDatabase()
ReturnValue += ":Create"
SQLCeEngine.Dispose()
ReturnValue += ": Dispose"

Here is the error message I get from our application- the part after Err: is the actual error message from the system:
Data Source = D:EVADATAWebServiceDownloads est;Password=test;Persist Security Info=False;: Declare new:Error!:Err:The operating system does not support encryption.

When I go into SQL Express and create a SQL Mobile database using it, it can be created. So, I have to believe it can be done on the server, but I don't know why the code can not do it.
(e.g. FileConnect Object ExplorerServer Type: SQL Server compact Edition and create a database). The database is successfully created if I do it manually this way. It even creates fine if I select the 'Encrypt' button.

The machine is a Windows 2000 Server sp4 version 5.00.2195
SQL 2000 is installed
SQL 2005 Express is installed
I ran the SQLServerCE31-EN.msi file and it is installed. (I have also re-run and repaired it)
I have also copied over the newest version of our code from scratch.

SQL Server mgmt Studio: 9.00.3042.00

Designing A Database Within A Database... Design Question Storing Data...

Jul 23, 2005

I have a system that basically stores a database within a database (I'msure lots have you have done this before in some form or another). At the end of the day, I'm storing the actual data generically in acolumn of type nvarchar(4000), but I want to add support for unlimitedtext. I want to do this in a smart fashion. Right now I am leaningtowards putting 2 nullable Value fields:ValueLong ntext nullableValueShort nvarchar(4000) nullableand dynamically storing the info in one or the other depending on thesize. ASP.NET does this exact very thing in it's Session State model;look at the ASPStateTempSessions table. This table has both aSessionItemShort of type varbinary (7000) and a SessionItemLong of typeImage. My question is, is it better to user varbinary (7000) and Image? I'mthinking maybe I should go down this path, simply because ASP.NET does, but I don't really know why. Does anyone know what would be the benifitof using varbinary and Image datatypes? If it's just to allow saving ofbinary data, then I don't really need that right now (and I don't thinkASP.NET does either). Are there any other reasons?thanks, dave

Database Design- Referencing Multiple Database

Sep 27, 2007

Hi All,
I am designing database where few of the master tables will reside in different database or in case different server. Scenario is
Server "A" with Database "A" may host the "Accounts" table.
Server "B" with Database "B" may host the "Product" table.
I am designing database "Project" which will hosted in Server "A".
My application requires this master tables [readonly access] as data inserted in my application refers this tables. Also there are reports to be generated which refer this tables.
How do i design my database and sql queries?
I am thinking of approach of having equivalent tables created in my database and writing service which keep tables in my database in sync. This will ensure good perfomance during transaction and reports as they will need to refer this table locally as opposed to different database or different server.

Any thoughts on above approach?? or any better/standard way for such scenarios ?

Thanks in Advance. Your inputs will be of great help.

Database Design - Multiple Vs. Single Database

Apr 12, 2007

Hello:

My client has a db with the following structure:

Online US Searchable Map of the 50 US States. Users search criteria is the following: Query records by selecting state, county, then record. Each County table has 10-20 tables. All databases combined = 500MB and TLogs = 100MB.

How would you re-design a relational DB where users could query data by state-county-record. Currenty the DB's are created by the County of each state which creates hundreds of DB's in SQLServer with no realtionship to each US state. What would be the best design to ensure good performance, data integrity and maintenance? Would you create 1 DB with all 50 states, create 4 DB's and divide by region(N,S,E,W), 50 DB's of each state or leave it as is with each county it's on DB? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Database Design

Apr 10, 2007

Hi,
I need a hand with designing a database.
I am collecting results from a survey which has the following questions:
Call ref? How did you place your support call?  Were you satisfied with the amount of time you had to wait until getting acknowledgement of the support call placed? 1 = very satisfied and 10 = very unsatisfied.  How happy were you with the customer service you received upon placing the support call?   1 = very unhappy and 10 = very happy. How satisfied were you with the amount of time you had to wait until you heard from an engineer? 1 = very satisfied and 10 = very unsatisfied.   How satisfied were you with the time taken to get your problem/query resolved? 1 = very satisfied and 10 = very unsatisfied  Did you feel the engineer had enough knowledge to deal with your call? 1 = very good and 10 = not very good  Overall how satisfied were you with the support call placed? 1 = very satisfied and 10 = very unsatisfiedIs there anything we can do to improve the quality of the support and service you received?
I want to store this in a database.  Obviously I want to use best practice for design, normalisation etc.  The stumbling block I am coming accross is the fact that each question has a number and each question has a score from 1 to 10 and storing this in the database.  Any help appreciated!
Thanks
