Database Permissions To Use Membership

Jan 22, 2008

I recently transfered my web app to my Windows 2003 server and am having difficulty getting the system to allow me to login.
I am using MS SQL Express 2005 and the SQL Express Manager.
I have a user/password setup with SQL Authentication.  It appears that I am connecting okay, but I am unable to login to the site.  I have tried three different accounts with no luck.  I know I am using the correct passwords.
What permissions do I have to grant my database user to allow me to login to my site?
As I am new to SQL Express and the manager, a more specific reply would be very helpful.
Thank you,
Joshua Foulk

ASP.NET Membership Stops Working (Permissions?)

Oct 10, 2006

I've been coding for a few weeks now, building an ASP.NET application.  ran the aspnet_regsql.exe wizard and it created my table and procedures correctly within the live SQL 2005 server being run by my host (ASPNIX.COM).  I've been able to run my app just fine locally saving to my remote SQL server.  However, now that I've moved my code onto my hosted server, my app stopped working.  You would think this would "jus work" since I've been using the same SQL server throughout...BUT NOoooo!  I've scoured the net trying to find any hint about what might be happening.  The ONLY thing I've been able to find is a story in the May issue of asp.netPRO that says "Once the scripts have been executed, grant the user account used to access the database from the Web application Execute permissions on all the new stored procedures and Selection permissions on the views that were created"This may be my problem, but I haven't figured out how to accomplish this.  Within the SQl Server Management Studio Express, I can pull up the properties of each stored procedure and place a check next to my "USER" account.  However it does not appear to be saved.My symptoms at this point are:It will not log me in under accounts I'd already created.

Membership Database

Feb 20, 2007

Hi all,
First ASP.NET project - please be gentle !
OK. Ready to add personalisation and membership. I have VS2005 Professional, including SQL Server 2005 developer, but I understand that VS2005 defaults to creating a local SQL Express file in the App_Data directory and that suits me just fine for now. Unfortunately I can't get VS to create it for me and the ASP.NET Configuration tool complains it can't connect to the database.
First, some REALLY dumb questions to show how little I really know ...

if the application is using a SQL Express file, does the SQL Server 2005 process need to be started in order to access the local database file (or does it just get opened like an access database)
does the Broswer process need to be started - this is all just running on my local machine
when I finally publish this site on my hosted service I could do with understanding what will need to be done to get THAT database accessed ... maybe cross that bridge later
I can go to the VS command prompt and run aspnet_regsql.exe in wizard mode. Going through the steps on that I could give it my SQL Server 2005 server name (after I start it) but that's not what I'm trying to do. I just want it to create and connect to a local file in the App_Data.
machine.config shows ...
  <connectionStrings>    <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />    <!-- <add name="LocalSql2005" connectionString="Data Source=MICKSPCSSLMJ;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb;Integrated Security=True"     providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />     -->  </connectionStrings>
The commented connection string I used to temporarily prove that I could access SQL2005. It's no longer used and I've put the other references back to "LocalSqlServer" as below ... <membership>
<providers>
<add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider, System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" connectionStringName="LocalSqlServer" enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="true" applicationName="/" requiresUniqueEmail="false" passwordFormat="Hashed" maxInvalidPasswordAttempts="5" minRequiredPasswordLength="7" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="1" passwordAttemptWindow="10" passwordStrengthRegularExpression="" />
</providers>
</membership>
<profile>
<providers>
<add name="AspNetSqlProfileProvider" connectionStringName="LocalSqlServer" applicationName="/" type="System.Web.Profile.SqlProfileProvider, System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" />
</providers>
</profile>
<roleManager>
<providers>
<add name="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" connectionStringName="LocalSqlServer"
applicationName="/" type="System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider, System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" />
<add name="AspNetWindowsTokenRoleProvider" applicationName="/" type="System.Web.Security.WindowsTokenRoleProvider, System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" />
</providers>
</roleManager>The profile provider is clearly pointing to "LocalSqlServer" which in turn points to : connectionString="data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true"
What am I missing please ?

ASP.NET Membership Database

Jun 9, 2008

Hello, I have an ASP.NET Membership Database that exists on a remote server.  I have been using this database as I developed my ASP.NET 2.0 application locally.  When I attempted to promote my ASP.NET 2.0 application to production, I am unable to connect to that same remote database.  Oddly, there is another database on that same remote server that I can access from my ASP.NET application in both development and production.
Can anyone explain to me what could cause this?
 Thank you!

Sql Server Membership Accounts And Another Database.

Jan 17, 2007

Hi,  I hope this is in the correct category. I have two .mdf files. aspnetdb.mdf and emotiveonline.mdf. My host provider can only give me one database in sql server express 2005. Now I am no genius when it comes to programming and that kind of stuff but those two mdf files would be seen as 2 databases right?  What I would like to know is that if I can but everything into one mdf file and how would i go about doing that. My website is almost finished and just thought about this now. Would like to do the changes as soon as possible so that I won't sit with a humongous problem later on.  Thank you in advance. Kind regards,Ruan Rossouw

Membership Database Installation SQL Express

Jun 3, 2006

I am trying to run one SQL Express database for two separate applications that will also use the Membership framework. My database is set up fine and works between both applications 100% as needed with the exception of Membership which I am fairly new to.

From my understanding given the following link
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnpag2/html/PAGHT000022.asp
I need to install membership on the database. So I did the following

 (allow remote connections with TCIP/IP and named pipes)
Started SQL and even re-booted
Ran: aspnet_regsql.exe -E -S localhost -A m
I even tried to run it by replacing localhost with MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS

All attempts gave me an error saying it could not connect and most likely because remote connections is disabled.

I think the reason for all this is because I don’t actually have the “real IIS installed but rather I am using the instantiated version that automatically comes up when starting a ASP.NET 2.0 application.

I am assuming I need to set everything up such that I am using the real IIS rather then the default one in visual studio.

Is this correct? Or do I have something else?

Membership Database Question (Under A Deadline - Please Respond Soon!)

Aug 23, 2007

 So I can't quite understand what's going on here... I've watched the video tutorial on ASP.NET about creating and securing my site using Membership (configuring roles and users), and I noticed that it creates a database in my App_Data folder (ASPNETDB, I think it's called).  And I've got all that working on my local machine, but I'm confused as to how to move it to my server.My hosting provider is M6.net, and they've told me that if I want to upload a database to their server, I have to create it using my admin panel, then upload the file and they'll fill it in for me.  My question is this: if I give them the database that's automatically created when I use login controls on my website LOCALLY, will that database still provide the correct membership functionality for my website when it's run from the web server?  Such that I can give them (M6) the ASPNETDB (containing all the usernames/passwords/rules? I've already specified for my local site), have them populate the similarly titled database on the server, and have it still work with my pages?I'm also confused as to why that database doesn't have a connection string specified in the web.config file...can anyone shed some light on that?As I have no direct access to the database server on my hosting provider, I need to create the membership database with all the correct details prior to uploading it to my server - if simply using the locally generated copy won't work, what should I do?Lastly, the video tutorial says to go to the ASP.NET Configuration page to manage users, roles, security settings, etc., but I don't seem to have access to that through M6.  Instead, I have access to a FrontPage configuration page that is strikingly similar in content to that ASP.NET Configuration page featured in the video, in that it also allows user and role management capability - is this the same thing under a different guise?

Are there any guidelines for moving this kind of database to the deployment server, which also has SQL Express ?

Is it just a case of  detach + attach ?

Store Membership Information Using Access .mdb Database

Aug 1, 2007

Hello,
I'm trying to create a web page that is protected by a user login. I want the user data to be stored in an access database file and not an SQL Server express database.

I was following this guide on msdn:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/879kf95c(VS.80).aspx

However, I was doing everything locally using a file system and not IIS. (Which seemed to work fine)

My main problem is that I cannot get the membership information stored in an access database. The only provider option was one for the SQL server express. I think I will have to make a custom provider? However, I read through some of that documentation and was equally confused. ( http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa479031.aspx )

Anyone have a solution?

Using Membership UserId Guids With SqlParameters (Membership UserId Guid)

May 7, 2008

In my site, when a user registers, I need to create rows in additional tables besides aspnet_Users. So, I need to be able to pass the generated userId guid to subsequent SqlCommands. I'm having a terrible time with this. What's the correct way to set up a SqlParameter so that it will accept a guid? I keep getting this error: "Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier."
I've tried creating the parameter both with and without a SqlDbType.
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue(paramName, guid);
and
SqlParameter p = new SqlParameter(paramName);p.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.Guid;cmd.Parameters.Add(p);
and I get the same error either way.
Driving me nuts! Any help appreciated.

SQL Server 2008 :: Script To List All Database Level Permissions In A Database?

SELECT prin.[name] [User], sec.state_desc + ' ' + sec.permission_name [Permission]
FROM [sys].[database_permissions] sec
JOIN [sys].[database_principals] prin
ON sec.[grantee_principal_id] = prin.[principal_id]
WHERE sec.class = 0
ORDER BY [User], [Permission];

but the results are this: 2 columns - User and Permission

User Permission
User1 GRANT CONNECT
User2 GRANT CONNECT

IS there a way in SQL Server (2005/2008/2012) to run a script against a Database that will show all users that have permissions to that Database and the type of permissions?

Database Permissions

Jan 29, 2007

Hi, In my web app I've got two databases (the asp profile one and my own custom one). If I take the code and data and use it to create another website on another box, I usually get a database error saying the permissions are wrong. In this case I usually just give everyone full control and it works, but this obviously isn't good practice!So, I'm wondering what permissions on database files does ASP need? Which users need what permissions? Thanks

Hello everyone...

I am trying to learn ASP.NET with SQL Server and I am having trouble with database permissions...

I am trying to use the following connection code:

Public dbconnstring As String = "Data Source=.;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=tempdb"

Now... this code works fine for the database "tempdb"..... but gives me an "access denied" error with the database "Northwind"...

I have tried to play around with the permissions for the Northwind database... but nothing happens...

Does anyone know haw to work around this??? either through changing the connection code or through changing the database permissions????

I then created another user and made it a dbo of the database and used this account to create the tables etc and load the intital data.

Any help in resolving this would be appreciated.

Also, he need to be able to run Enterprise Manager and SQL Ananlysis manager but I do not want him to be a local administrator but they will not start if he is just a local user. How can I accomplish it.

Database Permissions

Jul 20, 2005

We have a system at work that copies (using DTS) over databases fromone SQL Server box to another every night. The copying process dropseach target object and then recreates them. On the 2nd SQL Server boxI have an account setup that is supposed to only have access to runqueries on the databases that get copied over every night. However,because the DTS packages are dropping the objects first we are losingthe table level permissions for this user, so this user can't accessthese databases the next day. Is there a way to automate resettingthese permissions on each table in the databases? Perhaps I should beusing replication as opposed to DTS packages for copying over entiredatabases? If I used replication, would this avoid losing thepermissions that I need?Thanks,Jeff

Also, this is a db on a Small business Server 2003 so all of the SQL tools do not appear to be there.

Adding Permissions To New Database

Aug 5, 2004

Hi,

When a new Database is created ( some , not all. All that begins with 'PW' ) i want to add a windows-usergroup to it so they can access the DB.
Normally I could do this by adding this user to the model-db but it's not for all DB's that are added (The other DB's must not be accesible for this usergroup ).
The DB's are added by an External App so I have no control over it.

So I was thinking, no problem we can just add a trigger to the master..sysdatabases table and add if necessary the permissions.
Not -> Even with allowupdates = 1 you cannot add a trigger to a system table ( a bit overprotection from ms, should be allowed if you know what you are doing ).

I would like to avoid running a job every x time to look if a new DB has been added, the DB must be available within minutes after creation.

Does anybody has any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance,

Sven Peeters

Permissions When Restoring A Database

Sep 1, 2004

Our staff login to SQL Server using NT Authentication. The logins have Security Administrator, Disk Administrator and Database Creator Server Roles.

Staff memebers create a new database with Enterprise Manager and are automatically the dbo of that database. They then need to restore the database (again using EM) from a backup file sent to us from various clients. Obviously their login/user will not exist in this external backup file we have been sent. When they restore the database (and they are large so this can take an hour), the restore is almost complete when it gives the error :

Server user 'BLAH' is not a valid user in database 'clientdb'.
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally

The user is no longer dbo or even part of the database they just created.

IS there any way for me to get around this error without making all our staff System Administrors ?

Thanks,
Alison

The 2005 database I refer to is on standard edition SP2

User Permissions To Database

Jul 5, 2007

hi,

I created an application using VB.NET, which performs accessto SQL database. the server is MS SQL 2000.

I got a few questions:

a. The application performs access to tables, performs SELECT transactions, and calls stored procedures. I want to define a userlogin that is only permitted to commit UPDATE and INSERT only by the stored procedures, and not by direct commands. Is that possible ? Do I have to deny access to READWRITE in the tables? If I do deny - will the user be permitted to call stored procedures that performs the INSERTUPDATE those tables ?

b. Do I have to create a LOGIN or a USER for the specified requirements ?

c. Where can I find REALLY detailed information about what I need to create (login, user, role ect.) ? I find only general stuff...

d. The user-defined role I need to create - is it considered as an application role (because it grants an application access to the database) or is it called SERVER ROLE ?

Thanks,

Dror.

Duplicating Permissions Of A Database Role

Jan 20, 2004

thanks for reading.

i would like to create a new database role that has exactly the same permissions as an existing database role. the combinations of permissions are complicated enough to make this a time consuming task worthy of a script of some sort. any suggestions?

i'm running SQL Server 2000 and can't find anything about copying roles unless it's through DTS from one DB to another. not sure if this is applicable to basically duplicating and renaming a role in one database.

in case you're wondering why anyone would want to do this you may not be surprised to know that it's a government thing. some policy about differentiating between 2 roles -- even though they currently have exactly the same permissions, the similarities might change in the future.

thanks in advance for your input.

SQL 2012 :: Permissions For Connect Any Database?

Feb 24, 2015

We have a monitor tool to monitor our SQL servers.The vendor has a script to grant permission to application account to SQL server so that they can do the monitoring.

I don't want to grant system admin role, but the script they have is very specific, the minimum is:

must be a member of db_datareader role on the msdb database
must have view server state permissions
view any definition
connection permission to master database
execute permission on the xp_readerrorlog stored procedure
connect permission to the msdb database
must be member of db_Datareader role in the msdb datab ase
connect permission to all databases.

The script given by vendor is as follows in the attachment.I don't like the last execute statement for if a new database is created, we have to remember manually add the monitoring acccount to that database.

I know in SQL 2014 it has a new feature of connect to any database, but unfortunately we are using SQL 2012 and 2008.

script to connect to any database but no need to add that each time we creates a new database.

Copy Database Wizard Permissions

Feb 14, 2008

I have two servers (server 2003) both running SQL Server Enterprise Edition Version 8. One SQL server is Primary, the other is Secondary. The system was doing a daily export from primary and import to secondary, but that quit working a while back. I'm trying to copy the databases from the Primary to the Secondary and than set up replication. I'm already stuck at copying the databases over using the copy database wizard. The servers are not on a domain, and the SQL server service is running as user ./sql. When using the copy database wizard i must use windows authication for it to select the Primary as the sourse, as inputing the SQL Server authication user (sql) and password says it cannot connect. When i select one of the databases to copy and run the wizard it gives me an error code -2147467259, in which google did not help me. It runs through the process of creating a temporary share, puts it in single user mode, detaches the DB, but fails to copy the file. I believe it is some sort of permissions issue on the drive, and gave user sql full access, and after that didnt work i gave "everyone" full access temporary to see if that worked but didnt. Do these servers need to be on a domain for this to work? I also read MSoft knowledgebase http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274463 Id rather not have set these up for a domain. Thanks!
