I I work for a small business who has a somewhat successful ecommerce site. Our website is based on some VERY large DB's with 10's of millions of records, and 40+GB of images, so we choose to self host so we could easily manage the data. As things have grown and we've cobbled a fair amount of integration between the website databases and our internal systems. Fast forward 4-5 years, the website has grown to the point that self hosting is costing us a fortune in bandwidth costs, so I'm thinking of moving to a co-location facility. If I do that, I need to send the website tables along with it. Is there a replication stradagy that would allow us to have two independant DB's, both able to take updates that would sync with one another? My other thought is to spit the tables on two different DB's and let some of the data live in the co-location facility.. but I am worried about the performance impact for local users.
I am very new to the subject of writing CLR code inside SQL Server, so I apologise if my questions seem naive.
I have a requirement to populate an asp.net 2.0 GridView control with data columns, some of which are directly from a SQL Server 2005 database, but some of which are calculated by calling CLR methods passing the values from the database columns to those methods.
However, the methods I need to call only make sense in the process context of the client web site which is calling the stored procedure which I want to write to return the data columns.
In effect, I want to be able to make a remote procedure call from within the SQL Server CLR code to the methods available in the client process.
Is this possible? If so, could someone please refer me to an example of how to do it.
If it can be done, it opens up lots of very cool possibilities!
When I try to access a SQL Server report on the localhost that I have deployed, I get a message that "under default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections." After doing a little bit of searching, I went to the SQL Server Surface Area Connection and changed the server instance to allow for local and remote connections of both TCP/IP and named pipes. I stopped and restarted the service. Even after doing this I still get the same error.
If the Surface Area Configuration can't help out in this situation, what else would need to be modified?
What is the best method/model for having real time replication set up and also needing the ability to drop and recreate SP's/Tables/UDF's etc? I keep getting the error of the SP is being used in replication so it cannot be dropped...

Can anyone comment on the engine performance difference between SQL2005 Enterprise Edition versus Standard? I'm talking generalized performance of the engine and not admin features (parallel index operations) or scaled-storage (partitioning)
The marketing literature makes note of two things:
Enterprise can use more then 4 processors
Enhanced read-ahead and scan (super scan) (note: I cannot find anything about this 'feature') One un-noted Feature:
only Enterprise supports 'lock pages in memory'
We are in the process of migrating from SQL2000 to SQL2005 in an OLTP environment. Based on the marketing literature; I would have chosen SQL2005-standard. But based on our limited testing, we are seeing some strange differences.
Query Performance
With MaxDOP=1 and using a large batch query (select top 1500000); SQL2005-Enterprise is twice as fast as SQL2005-Standard.
(Note: this difference persists regardless of lock-pages-in-memory setting)
CPU Utilization
In addition, taskmgr shows that SQL2005-Enterprise uses a single processor at ~90%. While SQL2005-Standard shows a single processor at ~20%.
Lock Behavior
We are also seeing lock-behavior differences. A single DML statement that attempts to modify ~5000 rows will cause Table-locks on SQL2005-Standard but obtain normal row-locks on SQL2005-Enterprise.
These empirical differences make me wonder if the engine codebase is fundamentally different between the two?
Hi, I use Sql server express 2005.I have two databases: db1 and db2.I use Studio Management. I connect with my administrator account 'admin'. 1) When i rightclick on db1 (and also on db2) and i take the properties / general, i see for both db: owner = servernameadmin .When i take properties / Files, i see for db1: owner = servernameadmin , but for db2, it remains empty.why and does it mean that db2 has no owner? But then, why do i see in properties / general : owner = servernameadmin? 2) i want to make 'admin' owner of db2 (for creating a database diagram), so in properties / Files, i click on the button with three dots.A windows "select database owner" appears, i click on button 'browse', but then all i see is:built-in administartorsbuilt-in userssa... Whatever i choose (e.g; built-in administrators), i get the message: an entity of database cannot be owned by a role, group ... error 15353). Why do i not get the account 'admin' in the browse windows and how to make 'admin' owner of db2? Thanks for helpT.
I am a bit new to using MS-SQL, up till now my main adminstration was in Oracle.
I have a question, my developers make changes to my MS-SQL databases, however, they always login as a local admin or use their domain WIndows accounts - with the given privileges. Then they amend the database. My idea is to avoid logging into an MS-SQL server without using a Remote Desktop. So they will need some kind of a client.
What is your experience and what would be the best way to do this? Meaning, what software can I use that does not require a license fee?
With Oracle I can install the Oracle client which has an SQLPLUS to login remotely. Does MS-SQL have something similar?
Thanks in advance.
I did use Google to search, I also have an MS-SQL Developer Edition, but this seems to come with another server itself.
Hello everyone!I'd like to know which method is better for making a copy of anexisting database in SQL Server 2000, restoring from a backup of theoriginal, or using DTS to copy the objects to the new database. Anycaveats or drawbacks to either method? I'm just trying to lay thegroundwork for internal policies for managing our databases, and I justwant to make sure we use the best method. Thanks!
I have a 6.5 db that I want to create a copy of, I can move it to eithera machine running 7 or 2000. I am more used to doing this in Oracle sopls bear with me...I don't want to have any downtime on the 6.5 db, so I'm thinking perhapsimport is the best way to go? I am assuming that 6.5 backups are notcomaptible with either 7 or 2000 restore, or I'd go that route. The database in question is fairly simple, pretty well just tables fullof data, no stored procs...suggestions?TIA
I am trying to maintain a small database on my iPAQ, can somebody tell me that would database be created in SQL Server Mobile on my iPaq and can my VB.net based Windows CE application can access data from the database on my iPAQ

How would I hide the sa account to be accessible under Logins for a restricted User in sql server 2005 and also other folders like Replication, Managment, etc need to be hidden too.
VWD 2005 Express. Visual Basic. Sql Server 2005. I am trying to establish a connection to a SQL database. The connection (and all other database reads and writes) work fine in debug and in "view in browser" from VWD. I am running the VWD on the same server that hosts the site. When on my server (Windows 2003 Server) under IIS, the connection attempt times out. Below is the code that is failing (only on the server when deployed): Private Shared Sub OpenConn(ByVal cmd As SqlCommand, ByVal Success As Boolean) Dim conn As New SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("GoodNews_IntranetConnectionString").ToString) 'The connection string resolves to ("Data Source=HQSERVERHQSERVER;Initial Catalog=GoodNews_Intranet;Integrated Security=True" Try conn.Open() cmd.Connection = conn Success = TrueCatch ex As Exception Success = False End Try End Sub

I am developing a web site with asp.net 2.0 and c#, using Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 ( I am still learning about these technologies and languages ).I transferred my web site files to my NEW computer. The web site worked fine when running inside Visual Studio, however when I tried to run it in its PUBLISHED format it was giving this error message:Server Error in '/MA' Application. Cannot open database "SiteData" requested by the login. The login failed.Login failed for user 'CENTAURUSASPNET'.I solved the problem by running SQL Server Management Stdio, right clicking “SiteData database -> properties -> permissions->view server permissions then I chose “CENTAURUSASPNET and since I DID NOT KNOW what grants are ESSENTIAL for the functioning of the database, I GRANTED EVERYTHING ( I ticked ALL the permissions). But since, probably, a lot of GRANTS are not only unnecessary but also may compromise the security of the web site, I would like to know what are the ESSENTIAL OR MINIMUM GRANTS NECESSARY for making the database functional to the web site and what grants may represent a security risk.

Now, I try doing remote replication between 2 pc(eg.pc A and B). Pc A as a server for publisher and distributor, and PC B is a normal pc to store data. I want replicate data from PC B to PC A. I used merge replication for this replication. I don't understanding something like:
1. is I need 2 servers for this replication? One server for publisher and distributor and others one server for subscriber?
2. What should I do if one server also can doing replication? What the step?
I have two SQL Servers (6.5). One based in London (LDNINNTS9) and one in New York (NYINNTS2).
I had bidirectional replication set up on one table in a DB and everything is (WAS!!!) working fine. Came to work this morning (Monday typical!) and the following has happened.
When I select the remote servers option on the NY server from Enterprise manager I get the following error message
Unable to connect to site '0'because '' is not defined as a remote server.
Now it says that '' is not defined as a remote server. So I did a select of @@Servername and it has returned (null). It was set to NYINNTS2. I have tried executing some ISQL to change the name and started and stopped the SQL Services but the name remains (null). Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to set the name up as it was?
I know that the Server name gets set to null if it is invalid, but I am trying to set it to NYINNTS2, which should not be invalid? Does the domain name impact the validity of the name?
I have a sql server 2005 that is acting as the Publisher/Distributer. I want to set up a push subscription to a remote sql server 2005 that is on a different network. The problem I am encountering is that SQL server says I am required to use the computer name of the Subscriber, not an IP address.
I thought maybe I could add the remote server as a linked server and then reference it by the linked name but that doesnt seem to be an option.
I am trying to setup merge replication for a sqlmobile database. I was able to set it up on a test environment which the sql instance and the iis were on the same box. I am trying now to go live. Our sql instance is on another box than the iis. I am now getting a 404 error when trying to test in the url https://www.domain.com/sqlmobile/sqlcesa30.dll?diag Is there a walk through for iis running on a different box, or does someone know of a solution?
HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found. Internet Information Services (IIS)
I have a number of dialup users who are trying to replicate against a master database. The first few times worked fine.but now each user is getting the following message
"The process could not change generation history at the publisher"
I am setting up  transaction replication in SQL Server 2012 with three individual servers for Distributor, Publisher, Subscriber, But I want to know how to set the folder for Snapshot agent like whether the folder should be a network shared folder or normal local folder.
We have inherited a remote distribution db where the password has been lost. I would like to confirm that if you change the password in the distributor properties-->publishers--> administrative link password that the password will be changed on all publishers without having to resnap the publications?
I want to be able to setup the following configuration using bidirectional transactional replication on SQL 2005
instance A lives on machine 1 instance B lives on machine 2
Instance A publishes to a transactional subscription on Instance B Instance B does the reverse and publishes to a transactional subscription on Instance A
Instance A pushes to a distribution database on machine 2 Instance B pushes to a distribution database on machine 1
Problems Implementing Configuration
I can setup each instance as a distributor and create separate distribution databases using sp_adddistributor and sp_adddistributiondb
I can then enable each publisher to use the correct distribution database using sp_adddistpublisher
However, when I try and run sp_replicationdboption to setup a database for publication, I get the error:
Msg 20028, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_MSpublishdb, Line 55 The Distributor has not been installed correctly. Could not enable database for publishing.
If I try and configure a publication with the wizard, it says that instance A must be enabled as a publisher before you can create a publication - and then presents the dialog to add instance A to be handled by the local distribution database - which I don't want.
It appears that I need to run sp_adddistributor on the publisher as well as the distributor for the appropriate instance, but if I do this I get the error:
Msg 14099, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_adddistributor, Line 109 The server 'instance A' is already defined as a Distributor.
It seems that you can't select a remote distributor if you already have a local distributor configured.
Is there a way round this limitation?
Note that configuring the environment with a single distribution database works fine
there are several remote locations where sql is running, my company has asked me to find a way to collect all the data from the remote locations to a central location automatically, for example day to day data should be synced at night time from 2am to 7 am and it should be compressed automatically before data transfers to the central location. NOTE there is no domain only standalone workstations
Hi,I have transactional replication set up on on of our MS SQL 2000 (SP4)Std Edition database serverBecause of an unfortunate scenario, I had to restore one of thepublication databases. I scripted the replication module and droppedthe publication first. Then did a full restore. When I try to set up the replication thru the script, it created thepublication with the following error messageServer: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 5, Procedure SYNC_FCR ToGPRPTS_GL00100, Line 1There is already an object named 'SYNC_FCR To GPRPTS_GL00100' in thedatabase. It seems the previous replication has set up these system viewsSYNC_FCR To GPRPTS_GL00100. And I have tried dropping the replicationmodule again to see if it drops the views but it didn't.The replication fails with some wired error & complains about thisviews when I try to run the synch..I even tried running the sp_removedbreplication to drop thereplication module, but the views do not seem to disappear. My question is how do I remove these system views or how do I make thereplication work without using these views or create new views.. Whyis this creating those system views in the first place?I would appreciate if anyone can help me fix this issue. Please feelfree to let me know if any additional information or scripts needed. Thanks in advance..Regards,Aravin Rajendra.
I am not able to connect to Remote Distributor from Publisher using Administrative Link Password. I have configured the Distributor on 1 m/c and Publisher on another m/c. When i use the wizard to configure the publisher using remote distributor. I have also specified the same Admin Password link (distributor_admin) in the distributor m/c. Â I am getting the following message: Â TITLE: New Publication Wizard------------------------------ SQL Server could not connect to the Distributor using the specified password.

In my production box is running on SQL7.0 with Merge replication and i want add one more table and i want add one more column existing replication table. Any body guide me how to add .This is very urgent Regards Don
