Database User Cannot Be Dropped

Mar 2, 2005

Hi..I just restored a databae from backup. After restoring, as usual, from the Enterprises manager, I want to delete the database user and readd again from the DB login name. But when I tried to delete the DB user, it prompts me the following.

"the selected user cannot be dropped because the user owns objects"

why? I never encountered this b4 ? I restored DB again but problem still the same. Any ideas?

Royal F-up, Dropped User Default Database

Jan 27, 2004

I am by no means a db administrator, so I apologize for my ignorance. However I do know that I screwed up and am unable to find the solution...

The small company I work for has a development SQL Server where we do testing and development for web based applications. While using SQL Server Enteprise Manager I accidentally dropped the user's default default database.

I have always been able to access the enteprise manager via windows authentication, but now I am unable to. Is there any way to set the default database back to 'master'? Currently I cannot connect with SQL Query Analyzer for the same reasons, and do not have any other access except via windows authentication. Is there any hope? Any help is much appreciated.

User Being Dropped From Dbases

Nov 30, 2000

Hello,

I have the following problem that I need to find a solution. I have created a generic user id and login in the model datbase on SQL 7. However the genericuser does not show in the explorer window for some databases, does not work on some databases. I have to go into TSQL and use dropuser to get rid off them and re-link them again.

Does any1 have a clue about why this happening? How it can be solved?

TIA Gurmi

The Database Principal Owns A Schema In The Database, And Cannot Be Dropped.

Feb 15, 2006

Trying to get my hands around all the new security features of SQL Server 2005. In Management Studio did something I don't know how to undo. I added a database role ReadOnlyRole and clicked the box next to db_datareader in the owned schemas box. Then I tried to remove the ReadOnlyRole and could not. How do I undo what I did? Is it possible?

The below is the TSQL that generates the my issue.

Use [master]
go
create database [test]
go

USE [test]
GO

CREATE ROLE [ReadOnlyRole]
GO

USE [test]
GO

ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON SCHEMA::[db_datareader] TO [ReadOnlyRole]
GO

drop role [ReadOnlyRole]
go

SSDT Database Users Being Dropped If Not In Source With DropObjectsNotInSource

Sep 18, 2012

URL>..n how to deploy (AKA publish) without dropping the users with the DropObjectsNotInSource enabled.  With the SSDT September 2012 release I have been testing I seem to be able to ignore permissions and role memberships but not users. In my situation and that of several other folks I have talked to it is a problem trying to manage this.  I am thinking of scenarios where there could be (1..n) databases needing the current build (where n is big and not a static number) and need to be updated but the database Users are different for several reasons.

don't have to manually use schema compare to identify objects to drop when we deploy and not drop database users at the target?  Because of the dynamic nature of these databases (i.e. 1-n might be on a different release than the current build) we would like to manage security at the source and not the project or post deployment script level. From the MSFT folks is there any hope that we will get a parameter to ignore users when DropObjects otInSource=true in an soon to be released version of SSDT?

Second User Trying To Connect Generates: Cannot Open User Default Database. Login Failed.

Apr 25, 2007

Hi, I'm new to SQL Express 2005.
I found information regarding : "Cannot open user default database. Login failed."on this forum but I think that in my case it's a bit different issue.
I have a website (ASP.NET 2.0) accessing DB, in the mean time Windows Service tries to update some data in the same DB (Service runs as NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM). The second connection is rejected: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user ....".
Problem occurs only when both: service and website are running at the same time. So service and website are running without problems when they are connecting DB exclusively.
My connection string is:
"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|DataDirectory|spider-lab.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

I would be grateful if you can help me

Cannot Open User Default Database. User Login Failed.

Jan 15, 2004

Hi,

I'm sorry if this is simple, I'm no DBA but have been tasked with solving this problem...

We have a website that connects via ODBC to SQL Server (2k sp1) and at the moment I am getting back about every other time:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open user default database. Login failed.

So this is NOT happening every single time. Now I have seen Microsoft KB - 307864 and I can see that none of the databases are marked as suspect, the database I am trying to connect to does exist and is attached and, I have run the command to switch the database to multi-user mode.

The probable cause of this problem is that a while ago we had a hard-drive failure and I was forced to reattach some old datafiles (mdf, ldf) as the database. This seemed ok and I can view data etc in enterprise manager no problem.

I have checked for orphaned users and the user I am logging in with from the webpage is not listed.

So does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening, and more frustratingly for me, why is it only happening some of the time.

Thanks for your help, appreciated.

James.

Set Database Back To Multi User From Single User

Feb 27, 2008

I am using SharePoint Services 3.0 (SP1) with default configuration options, which installs the Microsoft##SSEE instance of SQL to my local C: drive.

While attempting to relocate the files to another drive, I set one of the databases (as recommended) to Single User by using the SQL Server Management Express tool.

I cannot now reset that database to Multi User, even by executing the query

exec sp_dboption 'database_name', 'single user', ''FALSE'

again by using the Management Express Tool.

Can someone please help, in plain english???? Thanks

Cannot Logon With Authenticated User When User Database Is Removed

Dec 12, 2007

Hello,

We have a new production server with SQLserver 2005.
Our department responsible ofr the installation made it as secure as possible, however.
I have to put a new backup on to the server from the old production server.
We ran into a problem when we removed the old database.
I could not longer logon to the server with an authenticated user.

"A connection was successfully established with the server, but an error occured during the login process"
"Shared memory provider : error 0 : No process is on the other end of the pipe"

Strange thing is when i create a new database with the same name. The user can logon to the server again.

Any idea's ?

from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:

Adding A User/role To All User Database

Jan 23, 2001

Hi everyone,

I try to add a db_role or a user to all my databases with one script. Although parsing doesn't report any problem I get a Syntax error during execution.
I first select the database names into a #temp table which has two columns, ID and dbname.
After that I use the following code:

DECLARE @Count smallint
declare @dbVarchar(20)

SET @Count = 1

WHILE (@Count <=(SELECT MAX(ID) FROM #temp))

BEGIN

Exec ("USE @db")

EXEC sp_adduser 'test'
EXEC sp_addrolemember 'my_role', 'testrole'

SET @COUNT = @COUNT + 1
SET @db = (SELECT dbname FROM #temp WHERE ID = @Count)
END

It seems that the "Use @db" part has no value for the variable @db.
Does anybody knows how to solve this?

Dropped Connections

Apr 6, 1999

Here's a poser.
I run a VB application to import data from a text file into a SQL 6.5 database. Typically, there'll be 300,000 records, all of which have to be processed. Time taken will be in excess of 2 hours.

When the application finishes, I try to go into Enterprise Manager and run a Select Count(*) to verify that the data's been imported. Invariably, I get an error reading:
"A connection could not be established to <server> - [SQL Server] Could not allocate a new object descriptor for required system catalog in database '1'. Another database must be closed or objects in another database dropped in order to open this database."
I get the same error whether I try to view Current Activity, open the Query Tool or simply expand the server in the Server Manager area.
Usually, it means I have to re-boot the server, which is not popular with other users. Does anybody know what's causing this and what might be the solution?
Thanks.

Dropped Job Failed

Apr 17, 2007

I believe I deleted a maintenance plan that was attached to a job and therefore have received the following message:

Drop failed for Job 'Shrink DSS Database.Subplan_1'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

An execption occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlSserver.connectionInfo)

The DELETE statement conflicted with the REFERENCE constraint "FK_subplan_job_id". The conflict occurred in database "msdb", table "dbo.sysmaintplan_subplans", column 'job_id'.

The statement has been terminated. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 547)

Is there a T-SQL or other means I can use to remove this constraint and delete the job show it does not show up in SQL Server Management Studio any longer?

Most Logins Dropped-No Permissions

Mar 28, 2007

Hi,

In my local instance of SQL Server at work (which I use for testing), somehow all of the logins except 2 were dropped. The administrators group no longer exists as a login (nor do any other windows users or groups)-the only 2 remaining are sa (which is disabled) and a SQL login I had created earlier which has no permissions except read permission on master. I can login as this SQL user, but I do not have permissions to create logins or enable the sa account. Do I have any options other than uninstalling and reinstalling my local instance?

Thanks,

How To Recover From Dropped Tempdb?

Feb 7, 2007

I am testing sql server 2005 in different disaster situations happened under 2000. I was reading a lot about no update on system tables, so:

sp_detach_db 'tempdb'

In sql 2000 i could issue something like the following command to recover:

use master

sp_configure 'allow updates', 1

reconfigure with override

go

insert sys.sysdatabases (name, dbid, sid, mode, status, status2, crdate, reserved, category, cmptlevel, filename, version)

values ('tempdb', 2, 0x01, 0, 8, 1090520064, '2007-01-27 13:03:10.873', '1900-01-01 00:00:00.000', 0, '90', 'D:eepmssql emp empdb.mdf', 611)

go

sp_configure 'allow updates', 0

reconfigure with override

go

As tempdb is hardcoded db id 2, I do not have a chance to recover without a master backup.

Of course, this situation can be recovered using a master backup, but it is not always available.

Thank you for your comments.
