Db Backups Appending / Overwriting

May 9, 2007

When I create a db backup on our network using BACKUP DATABASE...

BACKUP DATABASE [TKKCommonData] TO DISK = N'G:SQL_BACKUPSTKKCommonDataTKKCommonData_DATA.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'TKKCommonData_DATA-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10

I've specified the NOINIT so that it appends rather than overwrites the database, however the database is still overwritten.
Any idea how to get the database to backup and append to the set rather than overwrite the backup ?

SQL 2012 :: Appending Backups Instead Of Overwriting?

Mar 23, 2015

Just hit a issue where we had a 40gb backup file for a database with an mdf of less than 2gb and tran log less than half a gb.

Noticed someone had set the backup for this database to append the backup file in stead of overwrite it.

Just wondering why would you want to append a backup instead of overwrite it?

Inserts Overwriting

Nov 21, 2001

Hi,
I have a small web application managing complaints. During multiuser testing we noticed that when complaints where added at "exactly" the same time one complaint text seemed to be over writing the other, and returning the current max value for table id as current complaint number.

I tested in my development environment and was able to recreate reasonably easily ( 1 go out of 3 recreated the issue ). The Id column itself is an auto increment ( primary key ), so I can't think of a concievable reason why one record should overwrite another. I should say that I am assuming the record is overwritten, perhaps there is a clash and one complaint is ignored by the database.

Have anyone encountered this in the past?

Thanks

Overwriting Database

Apr 22, 2008

I am very new to SQL, but I am now receiving a updates on a database from an online HD. My idea was that I could download the updated database and paste over the existing database in my SQL folder. For some reason that is not working. How should this database be updated. I would prefer not to have to drop and add everyday.

Possibly I could make a database that is not in any folder and then make an update to it from the newly recieved database, but I am not sure how that would be done.

Restoring Database Without Overwriting The Old One.

Jan 30, 2008

Hello,

I'm trying to create installer that installs database from empty backed up database.
The SQL script executed by installer:

RESTORE DATABASE [DU] FROM DISK = N'$TARGETDIR$DuTempDU.bak' WITH FILE = 1, MOVE N'DU' TO N'$DATABASE_DIR$DU.mdf', MOVE N'DU_log' TO N'$DATABASE_DIR$DU_log.ldf', NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10
GO

There $TARGETDIR$ and $DATABASE_DIR$ are MSI variables set on runtime. The REPLACE flag is not set, but DU database (non empty )still gets overwritten with empty database. Do I need to check manually if database exists before trying to restore it?

DB Engine :: Will Transaction Log Backups Not Free Up Log During Full Backups

Nov 15, 2015

The space allocated to the Log in question is 180 GB. During this time period I was running TLog backups every 5 minutes, yet the log continued to chew through to 80 GB used, even after the process was complete and a final TLog backup had been taken. It continued to stay very large until the Full backup was complete -- or something else that I'm unaware of completed. Like every other DBA I typically take a TLog backup to shrink the log, but what appeared to be the case here was the Full completed and it released the used log space. All said, will Transaction Log backups not free up the log during Full backups?

Repeating Table Headers Overwriting Data

Oct 5, 2006

I'm using RS2000 SP2 and am getting an issue when exporting to PDF. If I have a table that spans more than one page and I set the RepeatHeaderOnNewPage to True, then on occasion the table header will be displayed on top of the first few rows of data. It does not happen on all the pages or all the time and I can not find any information on this issue. Has anyone come across this before and solved it?

Overwriting An Existing Database With One That Is Populated With Data

Jan 21, 2008

I am tring to figure out how to simplify the process of populating a database created by an application with the same database, only with data already in it. So far i have created a backup of the database and used that backup file with SQL server management express to overwrite the existing database with that backup file on a new computer so the program will have data when initally installed for Demonstration purposes. I was hoping there was an executable script that i could use, so that when someone wants a demonstration of our product, they can see its options and functionallity with data available. Maby i am going about this the wrong way, i need to know if there is a way that when our program is installed an executable can simply be run to populate our database with a backup of our sample database. Any imput would be helpful.
Thanks.

Restore Backup To Second System Without Overwriting Local Custom Views?

Apr 25, 2008

Is this possible?

here is the situation. I have a DB on one system. I back it up and then restore it to a second system. This second system I run reports off of and I want to create custom views that do not exist on the original system. Can I restore the
backup DB from the remote system without wiping out the custom views on the local system?

I have to do this this way as they won't let us create the views we want on the remote system so the only way we have access to run the reports is by restoring the backup locally.

TIA!

Appending Current Row ID

Listings.UpdateDB AddNewListing = new Listings.UpdateDB();

AddNewListing.InsertListing (Bathrooms.Text, Bedrooms.Text,

AddNewListing.InsertListing(Bathrooms.Text, Bedrooms.Text,
Description.Text, Features.ToString(), Address.Text, Price.Text, FN +

Appending A Field

Jan 24, 2004

I know this must be simple, but I am stumpped, please help!

I am writing a stored procedure in SQL 2000 where an incomming variable is a string of characters (a couple of sentences) and I want to add that to the existing string of characters in a table field called "Comments".

I do not know how to append the text in a field. How is that best done?

The basic function of the procedure is to take whatever string is passed to it and append it to the current contents of the field "Comments". As the procedure is ran over and over again, the field is constantly appended with the incomming text.

What is the best way to do this? Can anyone give me an example?

Appending To A Text File Via DTS

Sep 8, 2004

DTS wizard is not allowing me to append the data to a text file. Every time I run DTS and choose the destination to be this text file (say A.txt), it overwrites the data. I have a table whose data I am dumping to a text file. I truncate the table, then get the data again into it and want to append it to the same text file. But I end up overwriting the text file with the new data.

Kindly let me know where I am going wrong.

Problem Appending To A Raw File

I have subscription records for five different magazine titles that i process by looping each one though a dataflow using a for-each loop. I am using the following instructions to append to the raw file: http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2005/12/01/2443.aspx

This works fine when I pass four different magazine titles. when i try to run all of the titles(five), i get the following errors:

[Raw File Destination [131195]] Warning: The parameter is incorrect.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: component "Raw File Destination" (131195) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0x80070057.

Any ideas?

Log Backup Files - Appending

Sep 6, 2007

Quick question regarding log backup files.

Currently I have a maintenance plan running a Full backup weekly, differential backups nightly, and log backups hourly. The log backups are all going into a single backup file - but it's hard to see what's going on behind the scenes here.

Does this file get 'reset' when the full backup is performed? Will it just keep growing indefinitely and should I be creating new files for each log backup, or manually deleting the file each week during the full backup task?

Thanks

Help Needed: Regarding Appending Tables While Db Is Online

Aug 29, 2001

(SQL 7 on NT Server)
I want to append a table with 1200 rows, using DTS. While I know it is better to do while no one is using the database, exactly what impact will it have if I do this while the database is online? Which leads me to my next question: Exactly what operations can I do while the db is online, and what ones should I not even think of. Most of my needs are data imports and exports. I haven't found much in Online Books about this. Any help would be appreciated very much.
