Dbcc Updateusage (0) Fails On 6.5

I have a nightly jobs that runs dbcc updateusage (0) against one of our development databases and Enterprise Manager scheduled tasks window just reports the last run status as 'failed'.
The database has verified clean after running dbcc checkdb, checkcatalog, and newalloc.
Can someone tell me why the dbcc updateusage task fails? Even if I run it manually via ISQL/W it tells me 'DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, see your System Administrator.'. I do set traceflag 3604 on before running the updateusage command.

Back in the days when I did application support we often used DBCC updateusage against customers databases when things were running slow. It seemed to work although from what I know of it now I am not sure why. Do any of you have experience using this as part of a maintenance plan or to address performance issues?

In several years experience with 50+ SQL Servers I have not seen this message until recently, failing integrity check jobs normally indicate a table corruption due to faulty hard disks. This message however has come up several times in the last month with our SQL 2005 SP2 sites:-
DBCC results for 'DonorReceipts'.
Msg 2508, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
The In-row data RSVD page count for object "DonorReceipts", index ID 0, partition ID 49648614572032, alloc unit ID 49648614572032 (type In-row data) is incorrect. Run DBCC UPDATEUSAGE.
There are 6932 rows in 103 pages for object "DonorReceipts".
We have hundreds of tables and the message is normally on different tables each time. Running DBCC UPDATEUSAGE fixes the problem but does anyone know what causes it in the first place? Shouldn't the standard maintenance plans have an option to do this already?

when running DBCC CHECKDB on a DB i get this error:

Desperately need some help. I've got 96GB database, which fails the CHECKCATALOG portion of CHECKDB. I get 72 consistency errors, all pointing to one object_id:

I've tried all the repair/rebuild options with CHECKDB, none of them resolve the issue. I cannot restore from backup, since all backups have these errors since go-live six weeks ago. PSS will not advise on how to or support a direct modification of the system tables, but that seems to be the only option left. I cannot afford the downtime of an extensive rebuild (dump out the tables, drop and recreate each object). Copy database wizard fails to resolve the issue as well. As this is an ERP database, there are also toooooo many dependencies on the offending object to drop/recreate it. I would need to hack through 1500 other objects before being able to drop this UDF.
I'm at my wit's end. It seems the only option left, albeit "officially" unsupported, is to make direct updates to the system tables to resolve the problem. I've thought of stopping the services, doing a copy FOR ATTACH of the mssqlsystemresource database to another server, making direct modifications at that level, then moving back to original instance and restarting services.
Has anyone tried this before? I know the sp_configure with allow_updates does not work in 2K5, so I've got nothing left to try. If any one else has an idea, please let me know.

This seems to be a rare issue ( as acknowledged by microsoft ) and they seem to suggest that it happens with SQL Server 2000 SP3 . I migrated my database into an SQL Server 2000 SP4 and started the rebuild again .. .. But it still failed with the same error ..
Am just hoping the microsoft guys are wrong and many of you have actually faced this stuff before.. Please let me know.

I can resolve the issue by dropping and recreating index id: 2 but this
involves dropping and re-creating a lot or related constraints (this is a
primary key).
Can anyone give me any pointers as to why this corruption may have occurred
or more information about the kind of corruption? I have not seen this on any
other customer databases so I don't think it is an application error? Also,
any suggestions on a better (simpler) way to correct this problem?
Unfortunatley, the customers last viable backup is a couple of weeks out of
date and they are reluctant to restore and re-enter all the new data again.

I am not a DBA but have responsibility for a particular MSSQL 2008 R2 file server running a particular application.how to solve a database consistency check problem.The database fails dbcc checkdb with multiple 8903 errors. Unfortunately this was not discovered until well after any good backups were deleted. The good news is that the DB otherwise seems fine. We have experienced zero problems with the DB or the applications. Running the checkdb with the "repair_allow_data_loss" option does not fix the problem.
However, I would still like to fix the problem. Using a popular SQL recovery product I am able to recover the database.The original, vendor designed and supplied DB, has 2 file groups, and three files (MDF, NDF, LDF). The output of the recovery process produces 1 file group and 2 files (MDF and LDF). Vendor says they cannot support me since the recovered DB is 'non-standard' according to their design.
I am able to set up a new, blank version of the vendors database on another dev system with the proper file and filegroup structure. How can I get the data moved/copied from the recovered (MDF/LDF) database into the dev database (MDF, NDF, LDF). I've tried the import/export function but it fails (I can rerun and give details if necessary).

I am unclear on how dbcc updateusage (which fixes entries in sysindexes) differs from update statistics.
When would you use one vs the other? Are they any downsides to running these (other than a short performance hit?)
Any clarity my fellow dba's can provide is greatly appreciated!

Then after that, i need to check Database inigrity, for that
i used DBCC CHECKDB and DBCC CHECKCATALOG
but, i want to store the result in a text file, after executing these two commends, how to write commend line please help me.

I followed the advice of Paul Randal, but Im stumped as I am not able to determin what the corruption issues are. This is SQL 2000 and the database is a Solomon database that was recently upgraded to 6.5. the error I get when running the DBCC checkdb is as follows:

Now, the bad news. I am a bit of a novice and have picked this up from someone who left my company. It appears the latch error has been around for some time and only reared up when I instituted a new back up system that runs a dbcc check befor backing up. I don't think I have any clean backups.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I did a small package with only one ODBC connection (Merant 3.70 32-Bit Progess). This package runs well in Visual Studio and fails when runs by SQL Server Agent.
Configuration:
SQL Server Agent on a 32Bit server.
The ODBC connection configuration in available on System DSN on this server.
The user of Server Agent have full access (Admin).

We are trying to install the Standard Edition of SQL Server 2005. We already have SQL Express installed. Standard won't install and Express won't uninstall.
We have tried every suggestion we can find and some we made up. When we try to install Standard, we get to the bit where you choose what you want to install and the only thing available is workstation components.
There are so many cases of this on the Internat that I can't believe MS have not solved the issue. And I am stunned that they want to charge us more money to talk to us about how to fix something we just paid them an arm and a leg for!
What do I need to tell you to get some idea of where to go next with this?

Can I allow a non SA account to issue DBCC or TRUNCATE TABLE on a DBO table ?
I've tried setting this up in a SP where I've granted execute only to the user but the user receives "Only the DBO of the database may run the DBCC UPDATEUSAGE command".
Do I have to set the user up as an alias to DBO ? I'd rather not.

In past days we have a problem with a database. When we tried to fix the problem we found
that SQL 6.5 has a wizard for maintain the DB, but these one doesnt have an option to fix an
individual table. Seeing the way of work of this utility we look that it uses a bcp file.
What is the difference in :
1) apply a bcp(out) to an indivual table, drop the table, create table, bcp(in), create indexes.
We believe this method fixes the fragmentation problem
or
2) dbcc checktable(to the table).This method doesnt fix the fragmentation problem

We are new to SQL Server and we are currently setting up a job that
does a dbreindex for tables that need it. I got the scripts for this
from swynk. 50 of the tables that needed a dbreindex,
(under 90% scan density) were not impacted by running the dbreindex.
I.e., I ran the dbreindex and it left it at 50% scan density.
The fill factor for these tables is set to 100%.
I tried update stats, updateusage...nothing changes....
I am sure there must be a logical reason as to why the dbreindex
had no impact on these tables. Does any one have any info on this?

Hi guys.
I an application here developed by a third party software house.
In the past, for some reason, the database would fail daily. The software
house recommended that we use dbcc reindex on all tables within the
databases twice daily. This was scheduled and is now running. Now the
database no longer fails.
The fix works and I don't understand why.
I don't understand why this would fix the problem. Why would reindex
twice daily solve the problem.
It seems excessive to have to reindex every user table twice daily.

I was attempting to run the dbcc command on a couple of my databases and I get some errors on some servers but not others. Is there a reason for this?
What am I doing wrong? Is there a server setting that stops dbcc commands?

Here us the Output of DBCC SHOWCONTIG for one of my tables
Row Size = 82 (i.e Sum of the lengths of all the Columns)
No: of Rows = 162 (No of Rows in the table)
162 Rows can fit in two pages, Is there any way to make sure that these pages go on a same Extent so that my Scan Density will be 100.00% ( Ratio of Extent Switches to the Extent Scanned)
I tried all the Combinations of rebuilding the Clustered Indexes,BCP out the data and BCP IN, But all in vain....It does not put the pages in a same extent.
Any Help in this regard is greatly appreciated!!

I am executing a DBCC DBREINDEX for a table with about
4 million rown in SQL6.5. I has run for about
15 hrs now and is till running.
The index is the PK for the table and it is clustred index.
I ran it on a non clustered index on the same table and it ran for a couple of hrs.
Does any one have any idea how much time it might take for the clustered index?
I heard that this process might take more time and for one of my friends it ran for more than 40 hours.
I don;t have so much if time as th DB has to go for production to night and if not it might effect our businees.
I cancelled DBCC DBREINDEX before by killing the process and the master.DAT file got corrupted.I had to restore everytihng. Does anyone know any work around?
Help appreciated.

I tried to run dbcc reindex on all user tables in a database. There are no
clustered indexes, but multiple non-clustered indexes on each table.
The output file from dbcc reindex shows that it should have worked. But when I
run DBCC SHOWCONTIG, the scan density of the indexes that were in bad shape did
not improve.
Any ideas?
