Default Path For Data And Log When Creating Db

Dec 7, 2000

When a new database is created in enterprise manager the path for the database and transaction logs are defaulted to d:mssql7data or wherever you installed SQL Server to initially. Is there a way to change the defaults to place the data on one drive and the logs on a different drive?

SQL 2005 Default Installation Path

Dec 13, 2006

In sql 2000, during the installation an option was given to allow the installer to install to a different drive or path, however in sql 2005, I do not see an option. During the installation it does give you the option of installing via the command line interface, however this would be the last option. If this is the only method of installing sql 2005 for a different data drive path, then please provide the command line to do this. I've used the command line osql/isql to restore db's in sql 2000/msde and it's a pain.

Default Installation Path Permission Requirement (Warning)

Apr 18, 2008

I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition in parallel with SQL Server 2000. The server is a Dell 2650 with 1 GB RAM running Windows 2000 Server.

The initial part of the setup runs the System Configuration Checker (SCC), which is generating this warning:

Default Installation Path Permission Requirement (Warning)

The server is a member of a domain, but I am logged in as the local administrator. The drive is not compressed. There are no file system problems. I am at a loss as to why this warning is occuring, and do not want to proceed until I figure this out.

(I got this warning on another server as well. That was a test server, so I proceeded. The engine seems to run ok, but SSIS will not load, says a component is missing. Not sure if the two issues are related or not).

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

Reporting Services :: Default Path For Saving Reports On File System?

Jun 23, 2015

during period of troubles connecting to Local Servers and Sites location i.e., to [URL], the place where all Reports are saved by default, I have continued to work on some Reports that have been saved to file system of my localhost/developing machine. But, upon recovery of http location, I can not see/open those files?

how to approach those files in order to open them in Report Builder 3.0 and thus, to "save as" them to the http location? Seems that Report Builder has chosen that location, by default, somehow.....

Creating A Database On A Network Path

Aug 9, 2006

When I try to create a new database on a network path, I get the following error:

"\server est estdatabase.mdf" is on a network path that is not supported for database files.

Am I trying something that isn't possible? Should databases always be stored on the server PC running SQL (Express)?
I'm using Visual Basic Express and SQL Express (installed on a local PC not the server, so the connectionstring is ".SQLEXPRESS"), TCP/IP is enabled.

SQL 2012 :: SSRS Virtual Directory - HTTP GET Method Appending Default Path

Sep 27, 2015

There was a 2008 SSRS service running on server "abc".

I have a .Net UI that uses the wsdl at [URL] ....

They deployed SSRS 2012 service on a new server "xyz".

DNS points abc to xyz. Nslookup looks right shows both xyz and abc alias to the same IP.

when I try to go to [URL] .... it redirects to xyz as expected for the host name but the HTTP GET /ReportServer is appended with GET /Reports/ReportServer which doesn't exist and I get an 404 error.

I have no admin rights to see anything and I have no idea if it was an inplace upgrade or a new server. I assume it's new since the actual server name changed in nslookup. Why would it append the default virtual directory when it makes the hop to server "xyz"?

Creating A Default For Date/time

Dec 3, 2001

Hi all-

I was wondering if you had created a default for data/time (I'm looking to create one that will insert the equiv. of time()). When I try to make one and set the value to time() it tells me the value cannot be anything except a function, constant, or var. What's the deal?

Thanks.

Creating New Field With Default Values...

Nov 7, 2007

I am creating a new filed in SQL Server 2005, and I want the field to have the default of '0'

I select the data type as numeric and save my changes, I then visit our front end database to see if the default value is just '0' but it appears as '0.00'

SO i thought about changing the default value to int (im thinking this means integer?) and changing it to '3' but it still displays the decimal point and two 0's

Am I doing something wrong here? I just want it to display '0'

Thanks

Creating A Database In MSSql 2000, But NOT In The Default Directory

Sep 28, 2002

I am trying to find a solution to a thorny problem I have encountered...

I am a newbie in Sql Server 2000, but have quite a bit of experience in databases, both on PC and mainframe.

I am currently writing a program, which needs, among other things, to create Sql Server databases, to be located NOT in the default Mssql2000 directory, but in the user's home directory.

I am using an ADO connection and trying to execute it, as follows:

The text of the relevant part of the program goes like this:

Dim strCreateDatabase As String
Dim MyCn As ADODB.Connection

Set MyCn = New ADODB.Connection

With MyCn
.ConnectionTimeout = 25
.Provider = "sqloledb"
.Properties("Data Source").Value = "MOP"
.Properties("Initial Catalog").Value = ""
.Properties("Integrated Security").Value = "SSPI"
.Open
End With

strCreateDatabase = "Create Database Rimon on (" _
& "Name = Rimon, Filename = '\mopusersMR_DiazsalpmsdataRimon_Data.mdf', " _
& "Size = 20, MaxSize = 100, FileGrowth = 5) " _
& "Log on (Name = 'Rimon', Filename = 'c:usersMR_DiazsalpmsdataRimon_Log.ldf', " _
& "Size = 2, MaxSize = 10, FileGrowth = 1)"

MyCn.Execute strCreateDatabase

Both the name of the Sql Server and the Win2K server is MOP.

All the directories exist, and I have full access to them.

When I try to run this command, I get the following message:

File
'\mopusersMR_DiazsalpmsdataRimon_Data.mdf' is on a network device not supported for database files.

When I omit this location, it works just fine.

If I run it on the server, using another directory, it works just fine.

Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help!
Rimon Rafiah

Transact SQL :: ALTER Vs UPDATE When Creating A New Column With Default Value

May 8, 2015

I have a table with ~30M records. I'm trying to add a column to the existing table with default value and have noticed following ... When using alter with default value- (Executes more than 45 min and killed forcefully)

ex:
ALTER TABLE dbo.Table_X Add is_Active BIT CONSTRAINT DF_Table_X_is_Active DEFAULT 'FALSE' NOT NULL
GO

When using update command after adding column with alter (without default value) it completes is 5 min.

ex:
ALTER TABLE dbo.Table_X Add is_Active BIT NULL
GO
UPDATE Table_X SET is_Active = 0 WHERE is_Active IS NULL
GO

Why there is so much of difference in execution times ? I was just trying to understand internal behavior of the SQL in these two scenarios.

Reporting Services Install Not Creating Virtual Directories In Default Web Site

Jan 29, 2008

Hi,

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and I can't get Reporting Services to create the virtual directories in Default Web Site, instead it creates a new web site called Report Server with the virtual directories under that, this Report Server website points to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerInetPubwwwroot. Any ideas as to why this happens? My Default Web Site is called Default Website from the initial IIS install , I am on XP Pro SP 2 with IIS 5.1.
This is an issue for me since I don't want to have on another site that doesn't have the aspnet mapings.

I am dumbfounded and can't figure out what to do to make it not do that with the default configuration option checked during install. Should I uninstall and reinstall again and not use the default configuration?

Subject: BCM Install Error - Logfile && SQL Path Path && MSSQL.1?

Apr 16, 2008

When trying to install Business Contact Manager (BCM) for Outlook 2007, the setup failed and I was refered to a log file in my Local Settings/Temp folder. The log actually says that Business Contact Manager was installed sucessfully! BCM is supposed to install SQL Express 2005 as an instance or as instance if SQL Express is already installed. There is an MSSMLBIZ instance in Services..

Who can I send the Log File to for analysis and the fix feedback?

When I first went into Computer Management and clicked on Services and Applications in the left panel, the error message appeared "Snap-in failed to intialize. Name: SQL Server Configuration Manager CLSID:{CA9F8727-31DF-41D2-975C-887D84903967} This message diappeared when I clicked on Services and Applications again. Under Services, there are 3 SQL services - one is an application that was uninstalled 3-4 weeks ago and I disabled this service. The other 2 are: SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) and the other one is SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) When I tried to start either of the last 2, the message appeared: Services "Could not start the SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) service on Local Computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified. Under Program Files/Microsoft SQL Server/MSSGL.1 folder is mostly empty. So, it seems like the Path in the Registry is not valid and that nothing is being installed in the MSSQL.1 folder. If so, how do I fix this?

How do I get the BCM SQL instance to install and run properly? what do the messages in Services mean and how do I resolve these.

Thank you!

Gary

Changing Path Of Data && Log Files On The Fly

Dec 4, 2004

We have a SQL Server setup as a publisher to 15 subscribers. We need to change the path of the data & log files to a new drive (added a new harddisk). We plan to take a cold backup of the database and shift the data & log files to the new drive. Then we just attach the data & log files from the new path.

Will this disturb my existing replication Setup?
Is the the correct procedure for changing the path of the existing data & log files?
What is the appropriate method for shifting data & log file of a live database to a different location (directory/drive) ?

thanks in advance

SELECT @vHTML AS [processing-instruction(x)]
FOR XML PATH('')

where @vHTML is varchar(MAX)

Now, when I run my code in VB.NET and use the ExecuteXMLReader() command, I get nothing back into the XML Reader. I noticed that I needed the XMLDATA directive also, but when I add it, I get the following error

SQL Data Access With App's Exe Stored On A UNC Path?

Aug 29, 2006

Hello, This might be a simple thing, but I'm not able to find out the solution.

We have an application that accesses data from a SQL database. This works as long as the exe is located on the local drive of the user, however if the exe is stored on a unc path, we get the following execption thrown:

"System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

The action that failed was:
Demand
The type of the first permission that failed was:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission
The Zone of the assembly that failed was:
Intranet"

On our developer machines we have a control panel for .net 2.0 configuration and can get it to work by setting the intranet zone to full trust. However the users don't have this control panel. 2 questions:

a) Is there a way to get this control panel on the users station?

and

b) Is there a beter way to make this work?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Metadata On Data Flow Path Not Updating

Jun 18, 2007

I have a data flow task with a single source and destination task. I'm having the source task creating a table from a variable expression and the destination table also created from a variable expression. I'm running this under 3 scenarios in which each scenario has a different source and destination table. They are different in name but close in table structure with the exception of one column being different. The Metadata for the source flow path seems to be "sticky" in that it is not modifying the source table structure in the flow to account for this different column. I'm not sure how to adjust this. Any ideas? I've modified several properties in the task and data flow but nothing seems to make this adjustment in run-time.

Problems Deploying Express Database App In Common App Data Path

Jan 28, 2008

Hello,
I would like to deploy a per-machine Express database as part of my VS2005 C# desktop application. The deployment must work with both XP and Vista from the same setup files. I'm not using One-Click installation. I don't want my users to have to configure Express with the Surface Area Configuration tool.

Since the database cannot go in C:Program Files because of Vista ACL issues, I am using COMMONAPPDATACompanyNameAppName as the install path for the database and other user writable application files. In XP this expands to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCompanyNameAppName and in Vista it is C:ProgramDataCompanyNameAppName. Neither of these paths have write privileges for unprivileged users, so the install program needs to change the write permissions at install time. Right now I am using SetACL ( http://setacl.sourceforge.net/ ), to do that and the install goes fine with write permissions on the companyName folder and it's children for all users.

But I can't connect to the mdf file in my COMMONAPPDATACompanyNameAppName folder. If I am the administrator/installer it works fine, but as an unprivileged user I get different errors, but mostly "Could not login user ...". For debugging, I have also tried installing the database in the "AppFolder" directory (which for my app in both Vista and XP is C:Program FilesCompanyNameAppName) and using "User Instance=true" in the connection string, and the connection is made but (at least on XP) the unprivileged user cannot write to the database because the folder lacks write privileges for that user.

I suppose one thing I could do would be to change the folder/file permissions in the AppFolder, but I am reluctant to do that because I have read that Microsoft does not guarantee that the "Compatibility" feature in Vista for the Program Files directory will be available in future releases/service packs.

So is there a way to do a simple installation/db connection for a per-machine database located in a COMMONAPPDATA path?

Thanks for your help.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Cannot Access Path When Attaching Database With Data Files On SMB Share

Oct 1, 2014

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 2 node cluster with SQL Server 2014 FCI installed. Data files are on a separate Windows Server 2012 R2 file server. Data files share has been permissioned to the SQL Server service and SQL Server Agent service accounts as Full Control. NTFS Permissions are Full Control.

When I try to attach a database
CREATE DATABASE AdventureWorksDW2012
ON (FILENAME = 'apricotmssql_VIOLETMSSQL12.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATAAdventureWorksDW2012_Data.mdf')
FOR ATTACHI get this error:

Unable to open the physical file "apricotmssql_VIOLETMSSQL12.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATAAdventureWorksDW2012_Data.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".

If I log into the file server (called APRICOT) and look at the NTFS permissions they all look good. I have also reapplied the NTFS permissions from the root folder down.

EDIT
If I log on to one of the nodes in the cluster as the SQL Server service account and navigate to apricotmssql_VIOLETMSSQL12.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATA and copy and paste the data file, it works fine.

EDIT2:
If I log on to the file server and Enable Inheritance at the root level, then Replace all child objects with inheritable permission entries from this object, I get this error:

User Account Control settings on all nodes and the file server are set to Never notify
