Can I simply set the default value of a dateTime field with the date and time that the record was created?

May 25, 2004In SQL Server 2000 / Asp.Net I am trying to use default values for all fields; hoping to eliminate nulls.
For number and character fields, the default is pretty obvious, but is there any empty value for a date field? I think a null there might be better than putting in a bogus date, at least it can be tested for.
Are there any more developend ideas on this question?

Is it good practice to set a default date and what should the default date be????

How can I convert a datetime field to a date field in SQL in a way that excel will recognize it as a date type and not a text type?
I tried:
CONVERT(varchar(8),TASK_FINISH_DATE ,3)
CONVERT(Date,TASK_FINISH_DATE ,3)
CAST(TASK_FINISH_DATE as date)
**all of the above returned text objectes in excel and not date objects.
Informix Date Type Field To SQL Server Datetime Field Error

I am trying to drag data from Informix to Sql Server. When I kick off the package
using an OLE DB Source and a SQL Server Destination, I get DT_DBDATE to DT_DBTIMESTAMP
errors on two fields from Informix which are date data ....no timestamp part
I tried a couple of things:
Created a view of the Informix table where I cast the date fields as datetime year to fraction(5), which failed.
Altered the view to convert the date fields to char(10) with the hopes that SQL Server would implicitly cast them
as datetime but it failed.
What options do I have that will work?

I need to create a new field on a table and have that field default to another field value in that same table. Is there a way to do this w/ a default constraint rather than adding a trigger to the table? If i can't use a default constraint does anyone have a template trigger i could use? Below is an example of what i'm trying to do (Field_C is the new field and i want it to use Field_A value if no other value is specified on insert). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
alter table FOO add Field_C varchar(50) not null constraint FOO_default DEFAULT Field_A

Now, i want "1900-01-01 00:00:00.000" and just want NULL or blank and ofcourse not 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000 for my further processing.
I have a problem, i have to formath string send it as second value which is simple ' '.
How can i modify my Table definition above to achieve this.

I am trying to set the default date in my datetime parameter to yesterday's date, so the user does not have to select using the datepicker calendar. I am using Visual Studio 2005.
I put the following code into the Report Parameters non-queried default values function line, but it adds the timestamp to the date.
=DateAdd(€?d€?, -(WeekDay(Now()))+1, Now())
How can I get yesterday's date to default but without the timestamp?

Jul 13, 2007I have a visible DateTime parameter on the Report that I would like to make optional.
When I open up the report and try to run it without specifying the date I get a validation error that parameter is required. If I set default value to null - it works, but I have to check for both '' and NULL in my query:
StartDateTime >= @StartDate OR @StartDate='' OR @StartDate IS NULL
I tried setting default parameter using expression
=''
but I get an error that
'Default Value' of parameter 'StartDate' doesn't have expected time.
So the question is can I set DateTime parameters' default value to blank?

I have a report parameter StartDateTime. I set the default value to Now(). When I go to preview, the StartDateTime parameter is empty and its been locked. I am not even able to set it to different value in preview.
Can anyone help me how to set the datetime parameter to default value(Now).
Issue 2:
I have a stored procedure which takes StartDateTime parameter. Whenever the report refreshes using autorefresh interval, the startdatetime should default to Now. Right now the startdatetime defaults to whatever the value is there before i hit view report. how to do that using stored procedure.

Need Help Setting Default DateTime On SqlDataSource Control
Jan 21, 2007I thought this would be easy. I have a repeater control and a sqldatasource control. I am trying to filter the select statement using DateTime.Now.ToString() and keep getting an invalid date string format. The control is on a content page in my asp.net site. On the master page this <%= DateTime.Now.ToLongDateString() %> works to display the current date. If I try and put <%= DateTime.Now.ToString() %> in the Default value of the SelectParameter it does not work. No intellisense either so I am assuming I am missing something. Here is the code... pretty basic really.

I am importing a csv file to SQL 2005 table. The source column is coming as datetime. The destination filed is a datetime type. I would like to update the destination with the time part from the source. I used the data conversion to convert it to time using "database time[DT_DBTIME]". For a source value "2/08/2007 21:51:07" this inserts a value "2007-08-03 21:51:07.000". I need the column to have a value as "1900-01-01 21:57:07.000".
Can someone please tell me how do I do this conversion?

Jul 4, 2015I have a report with datetime parameter which is required to be optional (there should be an option not to select this parameter which would cause in not narrowing result of this report by this parameter).
I used datetime parameter
@daTo (to have the calendar control for selecting date) and check on "Allow Null" value. Here is default Value.
I've also tried to set DefaultValue expression was "=Nothing". Â
IN my query of data set, here is the part I use the parameter @daTo
 ... Where (@daTo IS NULL OR TRUNC(@daTo) >= TRUNC(pe.start_time) ....
But when I run the report, I got below error:
ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes: expected DATE got NUMBER
I think it @daTo value actually not null so it try to TRunc the value
I don't know how to set null value default in my report.

Jul 9, 2007I'm copying MyDbTable to TempdbTable. There are 12 fields and I'm ignoring 11 of them when copying the one table to another with DTSWizard.
Once the TempdbTable is there, I'm adding 2 fields along with the one that is there already.
1) field1 int, Nullable, Default value ((3))
2) field2 tinyint, Nullable, Default value ((1))
The reason why I'm creating these two fields and giving them a value so they will match up when I import TempdbTable to MyDb2ndTable.
The problem I'm having is... field1 and field2 have a Null value intead of the value I'm giving them.
I'm new at this, so maybe the cause of the problem is obvious, but if anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it.

Mar 25, 2008hi, please help me, i have a data driven site, i made a field that i call "Status"so this is how it should happens, there are three different gridviews in a single page, gridview1 filter is [status] = ok, gridview2 filter is [status] = fine, gridview3 filter is [status] = complete, so all gridview has its own <asp:hyperLinkField> at first the value of "Status" is ok, so it will appear in the gridview1, so when the user click on the <asp:HyperLinkField> of gridview1 it will go to a new page with a form view, this page has a button that when click will change the value of the status field to "fine", so that it will no longer appear to the gridview1 but it will now appear to gridview2 and same with the next <asp:HyperLinkField> click until it appears to the final gridview. so my question is how can i make the button that is capable of changing (update) the value my database field (status) to a specific value, that is not visible to the user thru codebehind or plain asp.net codes. please help me, if you need more info just reply.ThanksSALAMAT PO!

Nov 7, 2007I am creating a new filed in SQL Server 2005, and I want the field to have the default of '0'
I select the data type as numeric and save my changes, I then visit our front end database to see if the default value is just '0' but it appears as '0.00'
SO i thought about changing the default value to int (im thinking this means integer?) and changing it to '3' but it still displays the decimal point and two 0's
Am I doing something wrong here? I just want it to display '0'

Feb 26, 2001OUr end-users will be accessing data through a SQL view through third party applications. Ex. Access, Excel, Crystal Reports. All the date fields need to only have 'Data' XX/XX/XXXX, not datetime. Since SQL Server only stores the data as datetime, I convert the data in the proper format in the Create view statement. The only problem is that the data is now a text (varchar(10) field in which sorting through these third party applications causes issues.
Ex. 01/05/2000 comes before 02/02/1999 because it sorts on the first characters. Is there a way in SQL to store the data as a Date only or any other suggestions.
