I have a database which size is 64Go, and i backup it everyday with 1 day of retention.
But the maintenance plan don't delete the file older than 1 day.
This works fine for the other db.
Do you know what is the pb ?

I dump my databases to backup devices each night.
However would like to purge old backups - say older than a week - from the device.
Is it a case that I have to drop and re-create the devices every 7 days or can SQL do this for me?
I have seen the RETAINDAYS claus but it applies to tape backups only?

Using SQL Server 2005 Server Management Studio, I attempted to back up a database, and received this error:
Backup failed: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Backup and file manipulation operations (such as ALTER DATABASE ADD FILE) on a database must be serialized. Reissue the satement after the current backup or file manipulation is completed (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Program location:
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Backup.SqlBackup(Server srv)
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlManagerUI.BackupPropOptions.OnRunNow(Object sender)
Backup Options were set to:
Back up to the existing media set
Overwrite all existing backup sets
I am fairly new to SQL 2005. Can someone help me get past this issue? What other information do I need to provide?

I got full backup on daily schedule its taking more space on Drive because each file has more than 25GB.I am using SLQ server 2008R2 so I'm looking to take the backup with compression instead of uncompressed Backup. What are the impacts of compressed backup. Is there any problems with compressed backup while restoring the backup file.

This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOk in SQL 2000 this is within the maintaince plan, where as i have to create a seprate one for sql 2005 being i assume the 'clean up history' I choose the backup andrestore option choose 2 weeks and then run the job once created it runs sucssessfully but yet it dosnt delete a thing. I have backups going back almost 2 months now.
What on earth am i not doing?

I created a backup device and a job to backup a full dbs and transaction logs. When I first created the backup statement it was created with RETAIN DAYS = 10
Its been 15 days and the ones created after 10 days appear to be marked for deletiong but I am obviously missing a statement in my backup statement or in another job I need to schedule to come through and delete the old files from the backup device. Please help me figure out what this statement needs to be.
All the backups and T-log backups are written to one device which is one file.

Please, help. Let me start by saying that I have asked several DBA's this question, none of which have been able to provide a solution. I have a very annoying problem. An additional backup of my SQL Server 7 database is recurring every day and it is hogging up space on the server. I only want one recurring backup.
When checking my database backup plan, it seems there is only one backup instance: qarun_1099_release1_db_200207170200.BAK and qarun_1099_release1_tlog_200207170600.TRN. However, when I look in the default backup directory, SQL/Database/Backup, there is an instance in addition to the backup mentioned above with another name: qarun_1099_release1. This "mystery" backup is neither a .BAK or .TRN, but simply a file? I cannot figure out how and where this extra backup is recurring and I want to delete it.
I have tried disabling the jobs in the sysjobsteps and sysjobs tables of the msdb database, but this did not work! The backups are still recurring every day!
Please advise.

I have a database file approximately 30GB in size which creates 3 datatables daily. I need to reduce the size of the DB due to disk sizelimitations. Could I EXPORT some tables, let us say over thirty daysold, to something like DB_Name_Archieve and them delete them from theproduction DB to reduce the size? I also need the ability toreference/read them at a later time as needed.As a side note, could SQL Server use data on a redirected drive i.e.NET Used. I am experiencing an issue with SQL Server 2000 Maintenance Plan.
DB Backup job fails to delete old backup files from the file server (I am backing up to the network share - actually, a DFS).
Backup part of the maintenance plan/job succeeds, but then cleanup part fails.
I made sure that service account under which SQL Server Agent is running, has sufficient privileges over the network share by logging in and successfully deleting files in question.
I was not able to locate any log entries either on the SQL Server machine or on the file server machine that would indicate the root of the problem. Even though I turned on auditing for Delete operations for the destination folder, its subfolders and files, I could not find anything in the Security event log.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to troubleshoot and correct this problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy customer got a total hard drive failure.After sending it to drive recovery specialist we were able to recover the LDF log file (MyDB_0.LDF).But the MDF file was completely destroyed (MyDB.MDF).They have a good full backup from a month ago.
1) Installed SQL Server 2012 on a new PC
2) Created a new database of same name (MyDB) - with same MDF and LDF file names as original
3) Took the new database offline
4) deleted the MDF and LDF files of the new database
5) put "MyDB_0.LDF" in the place of the LDF file I just deleted
6) put the database back on-line
7) after hitting F5 to refresh databases - it shows "MyDB (Recovery Pending)"
8) tried to do Tail Log Backup with this command
BACKUP LOG [MyDB] TO DISK = N'C:BACKUPMyDB_TailLog.bak'
WITH NO_TRUNCATE
And I get this error...
Msg 3447, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Could not activate or scan all of the log files for database 'MyDB'.
The sad thing is I know we can get this data back using ApexSQL-Log. I can see all the transactions since the last full backup in this program - so the log file is not damaged. But my client doesn't want to pay the $2000 fee for this software.There has to be a way to restore this data, without having to purchase a third party tool.
I want to delete all backup files from a folder older than a specific date. But if I use the beklow query, I need to pass how many days of older backup files I need to delete whereas in my case, I dont know how many days/month/syears of old backup files are there in the backup folder.

I checked quickly one network and I ran into the folders; I found out the folder MSSQL backup, nothing strange so far. Within that folder, anyway, I found out several backup and one very huge file (datawarehouse) with extension FILE. I am wondering what can be? I got datawarehouse mdf of course and datawarehouse log but what is that huge file (1 TB)?

Now when I delete it it says can't delete because file is not empty.

Our server is getting pretty full, the data has already been backed up, but it did not create additional room on the server. Can I delete the log file as long as I have backed up the items I need? We are running Microsoft SQL 2000.

We have a SQL Server 2000 database with 2 transaction log files.
The 2nd file was created when we were running out of disk space and the person creating it was not familiar with the dbcc shrink command.
I now want to get rid of the 2nd log file. I ran the following steps with no success:
DBCC SHRINKFILE ('Log_file', EMPTYFILE )
--Message: Cannot shrink log file 3 (log_file) because all logical log files are in use.
ALTER DATABASE db1 REMOVE FILE 'Log_file'
--Message: The file 'Log_file' cannot be removed because it is not empty.
There are no users or open transactions in the database. I have also tried sp_detach_db and sp_attach_single_file_db but that does not work either as the database attaches both the transaction logs back.
Please advise.

I've inherited a procedure that performs a few transforms and writes to flat files in a working directory using a connection in connection manager.
After the manipulation, the system cleans up by deleting the working files. Works fine in development, but from the command line gives:
The process cannot access the file <filename> because it is being used by another process.".
I suspect this is because connection manager still has the file open.
Any ideas?

I want delete a file from the NTFS file system (assuming the right permissions are given) using the script or any other way. But I need to schedule a job which reads some table in SQL server and determines which files needs to be deleted and then I need to phyiscally delete these files.

Unfortunately, I didn't mention the @stoptime for each of the trace sessions and now I'm unable to delete the trace files. Is there any select statement that will be useful in finding the @traceid for these auditting sessions? Also, how am I able to stop the sessions without stopping the related services?

I have to run a DTS package to export data into a dBase file. I first have to delete the existing data within the dbase file, but I can only get it to delete the data, not the actual rows. The file continues to grow in size. Is there a way to delete the rows from the dbase file through the DTS package?
