I know SSE2005 is built on Sql Server 2005 and MSDE was built on Sql Server 2000 so let's not start a thread discussing that.
My question is more about the concurrency governor found in MSDE. I've heard people talking about the concurrency governor in MSDE being removed in SSE2005. Instead, performance is limited by the server configuration; one CPU, 1 GB RAM, and a maximum 4GB database. Can anyone confirm this?
What happens if the server has 2GB of RAM and/or dual processors? Will SSE only utilize 1 GB and/or one of the processors?

Hello,I've got installed Win 2003 SBS Premium with the SQL Server 2000 on a servermachine. It works almost fine, except the application which uses the SQLServer. The main part of the application runs (since the last update) fine,but other tools of that application (database import and the databasemanager for check and rebuild) doesn't. They hang up or kill the database.Our software developer says that these problems are in correlation with theserver os. But there won't be any problem if we install Win 2000 Server andadd an additional SQL Server 2000.Finally my question is: Are there any differences between the SQL Server2000 Versions, which are sold (a) as a single product, (b) as part of theWin 2003 SBS Premium package and (c) as part of other Server versions?Thanks in Advance,Martin

I'm trying to find what are the main differences between SQL Server 2005 64-bits and 32-bits. So far, I've found some articles about TPC-C performance but I would like to know some response time or execution time of a batch or SSIS packages.

I have a VB6 app. If i run it against one SQL server - its fine. Another SQL 2000 server - it fails.
Here is the code

The error is
Run time error 3021
Either EOF or BOF is true, or the current recordset has been deleted. Requested operation requires a current record.
They are both on Windows 2000 servers. I have checked SQL versions with @@version and
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')
Both identical.
The i used components checker to check MDAC versions - both 2.8. Also then checked the related MDAC Dlls. All identical.
Only thing i am having real trouble checking is the "Server Network Utility" - which on the server that works (?) is giving me an error of 126 "the specified module could not be found". Any idea what could be causing this?
What else could be different? Any ideas?

In brief, I am making the foolish mistake of embarking on my third and final year of an MS(c) degree in forensic computing. For my final year project I am intending to study and document (for forensic computing purposes) the forensic capture and investigation of data from a MS SQL Server database.
However, my experience is mostly from MySQL! In other words, I know very little about the internal structure of MS SQL Server 2000 or 2005.
Which leads me to my question....
Can anyone point me in the direction of a technical pagedocumentpdf (whatever) that details what the core fundamental differences are between 2000 and 2005. I'm not talking about an MS publicity paper - no, I need a non-bias technical guide which states the differences as fact.
If the differences in 2005 are mostly just cosemtic (the GUI etc) then I'll study 2000 because lots is already known and documented about it it seems. However, if it's much more than that and the differences are specific to what I'm studying (the forensic capture) then I'll probably have to go with 2005 because that's what we will be encountering more of in the next few years and the differences will effect the investigator.

Note: Please keep the discussion general so that student like me can understand. I have never seen Oracle but the industry requirements suggest that Oracle is way better than than SQL Server 2005. But thats what i think
b)I am Running Windows XP SP 2 and i would like to practise Oracle 9i. So, Where i can download it for free ? I know i have checked there website but they don't mention the difference between each version. Oracle does't market their products as well as Microsoft.

It's because you're relying on an implicit conversion from a string to a decimal data type which SQL server will do to 2 decimal places by default...
Alright:
SELECT ROUND (CONVERT(DECIMAL(3,2),'6.465'),2) --- result 6.47 Now please explain this:

MS is on the safe side with mentioning the last digit is always an estimate But because the result of the estimate is always the same, I would like to know:
* how is a string value exactly implicitly converted?
* how exactly does the estimation work, that in case of doubt rounds a value up or off?
When adding an SSIS step to a SQL Server Agent job, when selecting the location of a config file, the dialog lets you select from the database server you're working with. If selecting the location of the package itself (when the source is File System), the dialog lets you select from the machine where Management Studio is sitting instead of from the database server. Is that intentional? And if so, why? Should I just use a fully qualified file name for the package location rather than one using a drive letter?

I have new bought the SQL server 2005 enterprise, but it have 2 CDs, so what are the differences between CD1 and CD2? and so which one should i install first? or is it necessary to install both two or just need to install one of them?
And about my original sql 2000 database, can i just attach it's MDF file into the sql 2005 engine, or which import wizard can load the sql 2000 MDF into sql 2005? or do i need to keep the sql 2000 engine before do this?

I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my
text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters.
I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate
the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news
item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I
immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a
long news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is
"text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test,
I
simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still
recevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.

I am trying to change the computer name of a machine running MSDE but I get an error when SQL Server starts. With regular SQL when I change the name of a computer I re-run setup and setup fixes this problem. MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem.
My question is "How do I change the name of a computer running MSDE with out reinstalling MSDE"
We currently have the problem, that all our machines are produced with the
same name and afterwards the name is changed. So we have the problem that
the checksum key for the MSDE isn't valid anymore. As MSDE can only be installed
from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem. Does anyone
know a solution for this problem ?? A program recalculating the cheksum ??

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this this question but I'll give it a shot.
The only db development that I have ever done is in MS Access. I have a project at work that is being accomplished in VB and I need a db engine to use as the back end. Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?
I am curious to what major differences there are between these two versions.
Trying to decide whether or not to purchase the SQL 6.5 training kit from Microsoft or not. If the code and utilities are the same, then I could probably still learn from the 6.5 version. Any thoughts, suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I am having the following problem AFTER converting to VS2008 from VS2005 and SQLCE 3.5 from 3.01:
SQL CE db file has a table called Court0 with various columns of type float. I populate the values by copying floats from another table/tables. I do this via ado.net using this code snippet:

This works fine in VS2005/CE3.01 BUT not in VS2008/CE3.5
In CE3.5, the value entered into the cell looses it's decimal value.
For example, '1055.01' becomes '1055.0' in CE3.5 .
Can someone explain to me why the conversion stuffs up in CE3.5 and what do I do to fix it.

WHat's the difference between those queries? Why can't I get a result from the 1st and 3rd query?
We have a database that when an update is released (and this is very often) the release notes don't cover most of the actual changes. Every time groups of our custom queries and reports get broken due to database changes. Does anyone know how to compare two databases and get a report of the differences between them? I can either have the two versions on the same server or on different servers if that makes a difference.

I have just converted some Access VBA code to a sproc. I'm finding that for some reason the rounding is different:
eg.
ROUND(17 * 97995 / 1000,2) = 1665.915 before Rounding
SQL SProc: 1665.91 Rounds down
ADP VBA: 1665.92 Rounds up
Does this make sense?

What's the difference between using CREATE TABLE #TempTable and DECLARE @Table TABLE for temp tables and are there any advantages or disadvantages to using one over the other?Thanks
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a server with two test instances of a data base. I have a query which creates a temp table, inserts 29 rows, perform 4 update queries to add counts and then dumpps out the results. This entire query script runs 1.33 minutes on one instance and 2.5 minutes on the other. On the production server this query now runs in 9 seconds. If I run any one of the test updates individually they execute under 2 seconds, just like the production server.
THe results are repeatable.
All are SQL 7 with all service packs on NT4 sp6. Both test data bases are backups of production from last week. I suspect some kind of caching/buffer problem, but I do not know what to look for. I am not a DBA so I have no idea what role TEMPDB plays may play in this.
Can anyone give us ideas on where to look for the performance difference? Will our impending upgrade to SQL2K solve this problem or make it worse? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Is there any tool to find the differences between the two databases. I would like to know the differences in developmental server and Production server. if the developers create any new objects, I want to migrate them to production server.

I am updating a db with data from a file, in this data we have new info, info that has been updated and info that is to be removed from the db.
Now I was wondering which approach results in better performance/shorter executin time:
1. first update excisting values, then insert new ones, and last delete cancelled data
or
2. delete cancelled data and data that will be updated, then insert new and updated info
I get all this data from a file, in that file all rows are similar and there is one column that defines if the data is new, updated or to be deleted (thus all the updates also include the information for the enty that has not been altered).

I am kind of baffeled. I have a table with a column of 8 varchar in 2000
and the same in 6.5. When I insert into 2000 with a data length of more than 8 chars via Cold Fusion into the table, it fails. The same Cold Fusion
program inserts into the 6.5 table, but truncates the data but does not fail.
