Displaying The Values That Dont Match And Replacing By NULL
Feb 6, 2003
Hi,
Im having a couple of problems with SQL.
I have this query...
SELECT Band.Name, Member.Name
FROM Member
JOIN MemberOf ON Member.Mid = MemberOf.Mid
JOIN Band On MemberOf.Bid = Band.Bid
WHERE MemberOf.Instrument = 'keyboards';
which basically shows me the name of the bands who had keyboard players. I would like it to also display the names of the band who didnt have keyboard players, replacing the keyboard players name with "NULL".
so... my questions are :)
how do u get it to display the records that do not match the condition, and how do u get it to replace the keyboard players name with "NULL" when they do not match the condition.
PS. The three tables are
Band. Which has Bid as a primary key.
Member. Which has Mid as a primary key.
MemberOf. Which links these through its two foreign keys Mid and Bid.
Thanks for your help! (assuming someone does)

I have an SSIS package that imports data from an Excel file, replaces any value in Excel that reads "NULL" to "", then writes the data to a couple of databases.
What I have discovered today, is I have two columns of dates, an admit date and discharge date column, and what I need to do is anywhere I have a null value in the discharge date column, I have to replace it with the value in the admit date column.
I have searched around online and tried a few things using the Replace funtion in Derived columns but no dice so far.

Dear Members,
I extracted data from a flat file using SSIS package and load them into destination table. One column contains no data. Data type of that column is varchar(9). I want to display "NULL" values in that column.
I used LOOK up transformation and used the following query.
SELECT PassThroughRouting =
CASE PassThroughRouting
WHEN 'NULL' THEN 'NULL'
END
FROM EPICWareTable
But it gives a error message.
Does any body can help me?
Thanks

hi folks
Ive had a SQL 2000 server restored (using Veritas 9.1) to another server also running SQL 2000. I now have a collation problem.
When trying to add users to a database, I receive a "Error 446: Cannot resolve collation conflict for equal to operation" message.
I noted that tempdb and user tables collation dont match - so I was going to change the user tables. However, the master collation doesnt match tempdb, model or msdb.
Server is set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
Master - SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
tempdb, model, msdb - Latin1_General_CI_AS
I was under the impression that when tempdb was recreated it inherited the master database's collation? This doesnt seem to be happening.
any ideas?
much appreciated

I have a pivot transform that pivots a batch type. After the pivot, each batch type has its own row with null values for the other batch types that were pivoted. I want to group two fields and max() the remaining batch types so that the multiple rows are displayed on one row. I tried using the aggregate transform, but since the batch type field is a string, the max() function fails in the package. Is there another transform or can I use the aggragate transform another way so that the max() will work on a string?

Here's one for the group:
I have a fixed-width flat file. Within some of the rows, I have embedded NULL characters. The inherit problem is that NULL characters are string terminators, so using a flat file source doesn't allow the capturing of these NULL characters or any characters after the first NULL character -- only the string up to the NULL character.
So, within SSIS, what would be the best way to replace NULL characters with a SPACE character? My file is fixed-width, and replacing with a space will allow me to keep the length the same. I am not opposed to running a script task against the file first (before using my flat file source), but would need some guidance as I'm not a .Net guru, by any means.
Unfortunately, going to the bank to have them correct this file has proved fruitless. We're going to have to deal with these characters on our side.
Thanks,
Phil

Hi i have 2 cols
col1 col2
A1 21
A2 22
A3 21
A4 23
I want to create a report such that i should see all values of col1 but in col2 i want to show only value of 21 and the remaining should be zero.
So basically all the other values except 21 should be zero in the report but should not be updated in the database.
So the report should look like
col1 col2
A1 21
A2 0
A3 21
A4 0

Hi, I have the following query.
sql = "select firstname AS Expr1, lastname AS Expr2, status AS Expr3 from person order by lastname"
Status is either 0,1,2 or 3
How can I use the query to create "a temp Alias" for the query, so that there is a "temp Alias" AS Expr4, AS Expr5, AS Expr6 and AS Expr7.
So if status = 0 then Expr4 = "true" else false
So if status = 1 then Expr5 = "true" else false
So if status = 2 then Expr6 = "true" else false
So if status = 3 then Expr7 = "true" else false
So when the reader reads Expr4 its either true or false.
Is this possible i a query?

I am trying to replace field values in SSIS. For exapmle, I have 'unkown' and 'N/A', and a few other values that mean the same thing, and I want to give all these fields the same value. I have not been able to find a tool in the toolbox to make this type of change. Is there one? And, if there is, do you know a link to a page explaining its use?
The closest I have come is the Derived column String Transformation:Replace. But, I have not been able to get this to do what I want. If you know of a good reference explaining this tool's use I'd appreciate it.
thanks much,

Hi all,
I have run into a problem that I am stuck on. I have 3 tables lets call them a,b, and c. What I want to do is left outer join a with b on a common value, then replace any null values in this result with a default value, and then left outer join table c on the previously joined table (on the columns that I just replaced certain values on).
please help!

I have a field in a table that contains a different formula (varchar(1000)) for each record. It's along the lines of something like this, although each formula is different: ([ColumnA] - [ColumnB])/([ColumnC] - [ColumnD]). I plug that into a dynamic SQL statement so that it can get executed in a select statement.
Due to the variations of the formulas, checking for Divide by Zero, etc, we want to move this to a .NET method. We'd like to replace "ColumnA" and "ColumnB", etc., with the actual values so that we're passing something like (5-3)/(6-2). I haven't been able to figure out a way to do this without actually executing it. We don't want to pass the solution, but the equation filled with the actual values rather than the column names.

Hello,
I do not understand the following result. When I execute the following query I do not get any result. But there is in each table a row that fist the the WHERE criteria :
SELECT *
FROM dbo.Article_Element , dbo.Item
WHERE dbo.Item.Artcoar=dbo.Article_Element.ARTCOAR And
dbo.Item.Artpere = dbo.Article_Element.ARTPERE And
dbo.Item.Artdesi=dbo.Article_Element.ARTDESI
The thing is that dbo.Item.Artpere and dbo.Article_Element.ARTPERE are null. If I take this toff (dbo.Item.Artpere = dbo.Article_Element.ARTPERE And) then I get the result.
How could it be that null = null is not matching?
Thanks a lot for any feedback!

Hi all,
I would like have your help about a query.
In fact, I have a query to retrieve the rows for specific ID.
Like that:
SELECT *
FROM TblUser u
WHERE EXISTS
(
SELECT *
FROM TblScore s
WHERE s.FKIDUser = PKIDUser
)
With this query, I retrieve all users for which ones there are some scores.
Now, I need to get only users with specific score.
In the table TblScore, there is a column ScoreValue.
This column contains a value between 1 and 15
I would like to retrieve the users having score equal to 2,4 and 6
I could add a where clause like that: "and scorevalue in (2,4,6)"
But I want only users having these and only these scores, not less, not more.
So if an user has the following scores: 2,4,6,8, I don't want to retrieve it
If an user has the following scores: 2;4, I don't want to retrieve it.
If an user has the following scores: 2,4,6, I want it.
Someboy would have an idea at my problem ?
Thanks in advance
Jerome

Please don’t look for table design satisfies NF, this is just for example
Student table
Id StudentId
1 10
2 20
3 30
Student_Class
Id ClassId
1 100
1 101
1 102
1 103
2 100
2 101
When I give studentId 10 and class ids = 100, 101, 102, 103 then result should be get row from student table only if all given class ids matched.
Result:
Id Student ID ClassId
1 10 100, 101, 102, 103
Case 2: Student Id: 10 class Ids = 100, 101 the no results since all the class ids for student 10 in Student_Class are not matching with the given class Ids parameter.

I'd like to get a extract table result, with a reference id primary key, showing the maximum dates for events and who was responsible for them. I can get the max(date) field in columns using PIVOT, but can't see a way to get the 'who' field without lots of LEFT JOINs.
Here's some test data and code which shows the principle:
CREATE TABLE #t
(
ref INT ,
id INT ,
who VARCHAR(10) ,
checkin DATE
[Code] ....
The result set is:
ref 1 who1 2 who2 3 who3 4 who4
123 2014-01-18 carol 2014-01-18 andy 2014-01-16 bill 2014-01-17 carol
456 NULL NULL 2014-01-17 NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL
Is there some way to avoid all the LEFT JOINs, maybe by using another PIVOT, to produce the same result?

The actual schema I'm working against is proprietary and also adds more complication to the problem I'm trying to solve. So to solve this problem, I created a mock schema that is hopefully representative. See below for the mock schema, test data, my initial attempts at the query and the expected results.
-- greatly simplified schema that makes as much sense as the real schema
CREATE TABLE main (keyvalue INT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, otherdata VARCHAR(10));
CREATE TABLE dates (datekeyvalue INT NOT NULL, keyvalue INT NOT NULL, datevalue DATE NULL, PRIMARY KEY(datekeyvalue, keyvalue));
CREATE TABLE payments (datekeyvalue INT NOT NULL, keyvalue INT NOT NULL, paymentvalue INT NULL, PRIMARY KEY(datekeyvalue, keyvalue));
[Code] ....
Desired results:
SELECT 1 AS keyvalue, 'first row' AS otherdata, '2015-09-25' AS nextdate, 30 AS next_payment
UNION ALL
SELECT 2, 'second row', '2015-10-11', 150
UNION ALL
SELECT 3, 'third row', NULL, NULL
I know I'm doing something wrong in the last query and I believe another sub-query is needed?
Let me answer a few questions in advance:
Q: This schema looks horrible!
A: You don't know the half of it. I cleaned it up considerably for this question.
Q: Why is this schema designed like this?
A: Because it's a 3rd-party mainframe file dump being passed off as a relational database. And, no, I can't change it.
Q: I hope this isn't a frequently-run query against a large, high-activity database in which performance is mission-critical.
A: Yes, it is, and I left out the part where both the date and the amount are actually characters and have to pass through TRY_CONVERT (because I know how to do that part).

This is my issue. I have values in my table that I need to format as a percent. So when I use the FormatPercent() function, it works but if one of the records has no value for that field. I have a DTSX package which reads values from a fixed-length text file using a data reader and writes some of the column values from the file to an Oracle table. We have used this DTSX several times without incident but recently the process started inserting NULL values for some of the columns when there was a valid value in the source file. If we extract some of the rows from the source file into a smaller file (i.e 10 rows which incorrectly returned NULLs) and run them through the same package they write the correct values to the table, but running the complete file again results in the NULL values error. As well, if we rerun the same file multiple times the incidence of NULL values varies slightly and does not always seem to impact the same rows. I tried outputting data to a log file to see if I can determine what happens and no error messages are returned but it seems to be the case that the NULL values occur after pulling in the data via a Data Reader. Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and get some additional debugging information around this error?

Using MSSQL 2012
I have a simple select query and I need to eliminate records whose values from 2 different fields match. I thought I had this working, but if one of those fields in my data IS NULL it filters out those records. If I comment out my last line then my number record shows, if I include that statement that record drops. The only thing I see in my data is the Name and PName are both NULL in the data for that particular number. Just need to filter out any records where it finds those 3 Names that also have "Default" as the PName, then include everything else even if Name or Pname is NULL.
Below is my where clause.
WHERE [DETERMINATION] <> 'Denied'
AND [Number] ='A150731000039'
---- Removes incorrect records where these names match----
AND ([Name] NOT IN ('GLASSMAN','NANCY','LUDEMANN') AND [PName] = 'DEFAULT')

Hello,
I have just developed my first full package and it has been, ahem, an adventure- but I can see the power of SSIS. I am splitting 1M rows in to up to 11 parts (therefore up to 11M rows) for several files and it takes a matter of seconds!
I have used some variables in the package and would like to see the results of these at the end of execution. They are purely for interest at the moment.
I think I can output them to a flat file, but is it possible to output them to the Immediate window at the end of execution?
I can not figure out how to have a watch on them either- is this possible? Ideally I would like a counter on screen next to my loop containers.
All of the web pages I have seen regarding debugging seem to assume that VB is being used to create the package.
Thanks,
Alan.

At the top of my report, if I want to display the selected value for a given
parameter, I can put this expression in a text box:
="The xyz param's value is: " & Parameters!paramXYZ.Label(0).ToString
How do I go about displaying all the selected values for a multi-value
parameter (one that has mulitple checkboxes in the drop-down list)? Is it
possible to do a for loop and iterate through the values of the param within
an expression? Something like
for i = 0 to Parameters!paramXYZ.Count - 1
mystring = mystring & ", " & Parameters!paramXYZ.Label(i).ToString
And then display mystring in the textbox? Or can I use a list control on the
report?
Thank you,
