Hello,
First of all, this is my first time using SQL SERVER 2005 express, before that i'm using POSTGRESQL database.
I would like to know how what's the equivalent command for "BEGIN","ROLLBACK","COMMIT", these are the POSTGRESQL COMMAND use to start transaction, rollback transaction and commit transaction.
Example when i use this kind of command is . I need to insert data into 3 table. before insert into table1, i issue "begin", start to insert data into table1, if table1 no error, then i proceed to table 2 and table3. if table2 and table3 no error. then issue "commit" to commit the changes. but if any error happen between table1 and table 2 or table 2 and table3, i will issue "rollback" to roll any changes that i make to table1, table2 and table3.
Maybe some one can teach me how to achieve using SQL SERVER 2005 EXPRESS.
Thanks and Regards.

Hello ,
I have a Dataflow where I insert data from SQL to Oracle and SQL Connection needs to have RetainSameConnection = TRUE. I have Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server installed and I can rollback the transaction only if SQL Connection has RetainSameConnection = FALSE and TransactionOption = Required. Is there any possibility to rollback the Oracle transaction with having SQL RetainSameConnection = TRUE and TransactionOption = Supported?
Thanks.

I am working on reformating, cleaning, adding derived elements, etc... on data with no data validity checks on the front-end, source data. Its an incremental process where each month I add new data to the prior months' history. Sometimes the new monthly source data "surprises" me -- different values, different data definitons, etc. than expected.
I deal with these surprises by accumulating the fields/values that are unexpected after converting them to varchar with some explanatory language into a table [program_newdataprobs]
If there are any records in [program_newdataproblem] I rollback the transactions so the prior months' history remains unaltered. The problem is I then "lose" the contents of [program_newdataproblem] which I would like to hand to the source data people to troubleshoot.
I have tried the following:
Begin Transaction tran1
.... code that reformats data here
if (select count(*) from program_newdataproblem)>0
BEGIN
Begin Transaction tran2
select * into #t1 from program_newdataproblem
Commit Transaction tran2
Rollback Transaction tran1
insert into program_newdataproblem
Select * from #t1
END
This bombs because because #t1 no longer exits
Any way I can "keep" the data from program_newdataproblem when I Rollback the other transactions? (without having to store the history in separate tables that I can then access if new data errors occur)
Thanks,

hi
I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise on converting oracle PL/SQL features into MSSQL.
For example i have the following sequence + trigger below but cant find any information on creating a sequence in MSSQL, is it possible?
create sequence a_SEQ
start with 001
increment by 1
create or replace trigger a_TG
before insert a
for each row
begin
select (concat('D',(cast(a_SEQ.nextval as varchar(4))))) into :new.a_id from dual;
end;
any links or tutorials would be great, i've got a couple of MSSQL 2005 books which do explain triggers but examples are really needed to understand the full functionality.
cheers

Hi all,
I have a table with the list of tables I need to drop. So basically before droping those tables I need to disable the FK and PK constraints.
So I want to spool out the out of this script.
SELECT 'ALTER TABLE ' +
QUOTENAME( c.TABLE_NAME ) +
' NOCHECK CONSTRAINT ' +
QUOTENAME( c.CONSTRAINT_NAME ) AS ALTER_SCRIPT
FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS AS c
WHERE CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'FOREIGN KEY'
Is there a way to store the output of this script in a .sql file so that I could execute it.
Any thoughts will help!
Thank you!

HI,
I want to use the OLEDB command to call a oracle function, but i havnt found any materials about how to do that, my oracle function is as below:
CREATE OR REPLACE function GET_ZONEID_FROM_SYFZ(ycz varchar2,xc varchar2,strat_id varchar2)
return varchar2 IS
zone_id_result varchar2(10) ;
begin
PKG_DM_DQ.GET_ZONEID_FROM_SYFZ(ycz,xc,strat_id,zone_id_result);
return zone_id_result;
end;
In OLEDB command transformation component, i fill the sql command with "select GET_ZONEID_FROM_SYFZ(?,?,?) from dual", but i dont have it worked.
The error message is :provider can not derive parameter information and setparameterinfo has not been called.
Who have any idea about how to make it work?
Thanks ~~

hi,
Below are 2 oracle commands
1. (calls an oracle package) - call lpaarchive.pibrdg.setlastbridgeruntime(sysdate);
2. (selects rows) - select timestamp ,
pitag ,
rtlmp from LPAARCHIVE.I_PIBRDG_BUS5MINRTLMPS
where timestamp <= (sysdate + 0.002777778)
order by TIMESTAMP ASC;
I need to execute these 2 statements together. I tried using Execute SQL task to call the package and then an OLEDB source that calls a variable with the select statement. But it does not retrieve any rows. It seems like the result of calling the package is used by the select statement to give the final rows. Could anyone please help me resolve this issue.

Hi--
I am running SQL Server 2005 on Win2k3:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.2047.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2005.090.2047.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.086.1830.00 (srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.3790.1830
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42
Operating System 5.2.3790
I have the OraOLEDB.Oracle provider installed to the (C:oraclexe) directory.
I am having problems querying from linked oracle server. When i setup oracle as a linked server and purposely enter an incorrect password the query i run tells me i have an incorrect password. So it at least knows that. when i set the correct password and run a query I get this error:
(i replaced the real server name with "someServer".)
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "SomeServer" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "SomeServer".
This is how I set up my Linked server:
Provider: "Oracle Provider for OLE DB"
Product Name: SomeServer
Data Source: SomeServer
Provider String: "Provider=OraOLEDB.Oracle;Data Source=SomeServer;User Id=MyLogin;Password=MyPassword"
The query I run is:
Select * from [Someserver].[schema or database]..[tbl_name]
Any help??? What am i missing?

I have taken the database offline for the moment so no more changes can take place. i have never done this before and i would really appreciate some advice/online tutorials/help on this matter. i do have a full backup of the database because of nightly backups. any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Good morning all!
I've created a a new column on a table:
CD_Line int identity
This ADD COLUMN command gave me an error on this morning, we're talking about 40 million rows on this table.
The ROLLBACK TRAN is destroying my system that can't login on the SQL Server and no application can by Database at this moment.
Do anybody know how to STOP this situation and recovery the system?
Tks!

In general as understand if we have a stored procedure that does operations like inserts or updates, it makes perfect sense to use a rollback operation within a transaction.
So, if something goes wrong and the transaction does not complete, all changes will be reverted and an error description will be thrown for example.
Nevertheless, does using a rollback within a try catch statement, make sense in a read only stored procedure, that practically executes some dynamic sql just to select data from some tables?
I have around 100 Stored procedures, all of them read only. Today a colleague suggested adding try-catch blocks with rollback to all of them. But since they are just selecting data, I don't see a clear benefit of doing so, compared to the hassle of changing such a big number of SP's.

I have two tables called ECASE and PROJECT
In the ECASE table there is trigger to get the max value of case_id column in ecase based on project and increment one to that case_id value and insert into ecase table .
When we insert a new record to the ECASE table this trigger calls and insert the case_id column value.
When i run with multiple threads , the transaction is rolled back because of trigger . The reason is , on the project table the lock is happening while getting the max value of case_id column based on project.
I need to prevent the deadlock .

I have a pretty simple SSIS package that fast loads a 100 million record table into a SQL Server 2008 table on a daily basis. This normally runs fine and completes in about 1 hour. As this is perhaps one of our largest running SSIS packages, about once every 2-3 weeks this SSIS will fail/drop connection. Once it fails, the large number of records will start rolling back. This rollback process can take 1+ hours so I cannot even restart the failed SSIS package immediately. This is a problem.
I am looking for a solution or option so I do not have to wait on that rollback to restart this particular, long running SSIS package. Is there an option/setting to leave the partial data set committed and not rollback? Then I could just restart the SSIS package immediately or set it the SSIS to auto-restart 1 time on failure. The first step in the SSIS does a truncate of the destination table.
