My understanding is that at installation of all but the Express edition, there is no choice but to have VS2005 installed as well. If this is true, can VS 2005 at least be uninstalled after a different debugger is enlisted?

I have a question. At my home computer i downloaded and installed VWD. As usual it also installed Sqlexpress as part of the installation(i checked the option). Later on i downloaded Management studio separately so i am fine with my home computer as every thing is free.
But at work we decided to develop application using VS 2005 and Sqlserver 2005. So we bought and installed VS2005 professional edition at work and it also installed Sqlexpress during the installation as a defualt desktop engine. I am fine with that too. But i am not understing where do i get the Management studio? Is it some thing i could get it off the web for free or what? I am not sure we would have an option while installing the VS 2005 professional that also does install management studio and we need to check that option. I am not sure if we could get the management studion off the web for free and and evelop applications.

1. The Workgroup Edition comes with Windows SBS Server/Premium. However the docs for SQL/Server 2005 say not to install it on a Domain Controller. What does this mean--buy a separate box for the SQL Server software? If so with which OS?
2. If we get Windows SBS Standard, could we just install/download SQL Express on that Server? Even if it's a Domain Controller?
2. If a client is running an app on SQL Server 7, and wants to upgrade to 2005 (3-5 simultaneous uses of a DB about 1GB), which edition should we get?

I have the SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition CD and have succesfully installed this on my desktop.
When I install this on my Laptop the version is 2000(print @@version) is only Desktop version (2gb db limit!)....
Any ideas on why the full enterprise edition is not installing on the laptop?!!

Both SQL Server 2005 versions are installed from the same CD so why would there be a difference?
I understand that you cannot have Enterprise edition on XP but it has installed on the desktop, not the laptop???

I've developed and tested an application that utilizes the standard (.SQLEXPRESS, not user instance) instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. I'd like to be able to say that my solution will operate on any of the 32-bit SQL Server editions (Express, Workgroup, Standard, Developer, Enterprise).
I've found anecdotal comments from people saying that SQL Express is a subset of the other versions. However, in order to truly validate my "any edition" claim, I need to either:
a) Install and test my solution with all editions of SQL Server, or
b) Provide a justification for saying: "If it works on SQL Express, it'll work with the other editions".
Does anyone know if there is some official documentation somewhere that affirms the functional equivalence of the editions?
Is there documentation that states that each SQL Server edition is compiled from the same codebase?

Since visual studio .Net 2005 installs mobile edition and express edition will this cause a problem ?

I wish to use the latest CE in a VS2005(SP1) C# project and believe I have followed all the instructions as to installing SQL CE correctly. Indeed, running the two example projects in regards to deployment work fine.
When I try to include/add a CE database in a project however I keep getting an error message that MS SQL Server 2005 CE is not installed.
I run SQLServerCE31-EN.msi without problem - it even asks me if I want to repair it!
Can someone tell me what I have missed.

Does the x64 version of SQL Server 2005 June CTP contain 64-bit versions of the SQL Server ODBC Driver and the OLE DB Provider? I am not interested in the .NET Managed Provider here, just the legacy ODBC and OLE DB drivers, and only 64-bit versions of those.

I have both vs2005 and vs2008 installed. I'm working with a .Net Compact Framework 3.5 Smart Device Project.
If I refrence the System.Data.SqlClient.dll (Version 3.0.3600.0 Runtime v2.0.50727)

When I deploy the application I get an error ".Net Compact Framework v2.0 could not be found Please install it and run the setup again"
Studio is :

We tested this on a PC without vs2005 and it seems to work fine.

Is it required to have all the three machines with Enterprise Editions?

Can we install SQL Developer Edition on both DEV and TEST and have Enterprise Edition on production?

I was previously using SQL Server Express, and things worked fine by default settings. I am a beginner to web development and I really don't know anything about SQL Server. I'm guessing it needs to be configured somehow to work with VS, but I have no idea how to do that. I have an existing Web App which uses a database for login functionality, and everytime I try and log on I get this message:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to

When I try to attach an ".mdf" to a project by right clicking on the project name the software looks for an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. How do I alter this behavior to have it look to my full copy of SQL Server 2005 which appears to be working correctly?

I'd be interested in knowing how VS doesn't allow you to create a database. What error are you getting?
There are two ways to create databases, depending on your goal:
To just create a database on your server, do the following:
Open the Server Explorer
Right-click on Data Connections
Click Create New SQL Server Database
Specify Server Name and Database Name
Your database will be created and you can start working with it.
Embed a database in your project:
On the Project menu, click Add New Item.
Select SQL Database from the list and give it a name.
Click OK
This will run you thorugh a wizard to create the database.
If your having problems doing either of these, you may not have SQL Server installed on your computer or VS might be pointing to the wrong Instance Name. Check out the Option dialog under Database Tools:ata Connection and verify that the correct instance is specified.

I've serached this forum and Google'd for a resolution to this issue, to no avail. Here's the scenario:
I'm running VS 2005 on Windows Media Center laptop and need to create ASP.net membership for my web application built using VB. I have SQL Server Developer installed with instance name MSSQLSERVER. Previously, I uninstalled SQL Express and installed Developer edition and can now open and utilize Management Studio.
Now, when I try to create a new SQL Server database in my solution's App_Data directory, I receive the above error. I already changed instance name in VS2005 per Tools-Options-Database Tools-Data Connections to MSSQLSERVER.
Could someone provide me with a list of procedures to ensure proper setup of VS2005 with SQL Server Developer Edition?

Would be very pleased if anyone knows a solution to my prob.
I connect via ODBC (ADO) within Active Server Pages with an SQL Server 6.5 database.
The connection is opened at the top of the pages that need the database, and closed at the end of each individual page. Thing is, the connections for one single user are max. around 3 connections (checked that in Performance Monitor), no matter how many times the user opens his browser with the application. However, when say 20 users log on, the max. number of user connections as configured is reached within no time! The connections are not being closed (even with connection pooling on, they increase like hell!).
The only way to close them seems to be stopping the MSSQLServer service, but that's something ya don't want, of course.
It's jut plain crazy to increase the number of user connections to around 250 for about max. 80 user connections at one time...
I would really appreciate your input.

1.SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting
2.SQL Server Configuration Manager
3.SQL Server Surface Area Configuration
My objective is to have a database where I can play and refresh my skills in T-SQL. I would want to create or view tables and data. I've already downloaded CodePlex's sample database and installed it, but it is not showing. How can I configure these server to show tables and stuff?
I'm not a DBA but a programmer, and don't have the luxury of going through tons of documentation for this thing to get going. Any help would be appreciated.

I need to be able to programmatically detect whether or not SQL Server 2005, anything from Express on up to the full package with all the bells and whistles, is installed on the computer regardless of which service pack (if any) is installed. I found a forum article that provides a Registry setting that I could look at, but in the reply to the original post, it recommends using WMI instead of Registry keys. Also, I don't know whether or not the Registry key given for SQL Server 2005 would be present for even the minimal package. (Our requirements are for at least the Express package, and I understand that there's an even more basic package than that.) I'm maintaining a couple of installers that use 5-year old InstallShield technology (and Visual Studio 6 for any C/C++ code that I have to create) that have to check whether or not SQL Server 2005 Express (or a fuller package) is installed. I have done no SQL Server programming, so I've never even heard of WMI. Also, because these are installers, they have to work out of the box with no requirements to install anything beforehand to allow the installer to work. (We are working on an MSI-based installer with a bootstrap executable (the latter built using Visual Studio 2005) that will replace the older installers in the next version of our software, but we still need to support the older installers for now. Therefore, an out of the box solution that works with the older technology that we are still using for the older software is imperative. As the older software supports Win2k, the SQL Server detection solution must do so, too.)

Basically I only get Microsoft Sql Server COnfiguration tools. Am I doing something wrong or this is the way it is suppose to be? I had installed all the features from SQL Server 2005.

I created a mdf file but couldnt for the life of me install it into SQL Sever Express [and when I say install i mean attach]. When I used SQL Server Ent, I had no issues. The only warning I got was that my mdf file was used by another process when I tried to attach with VS 2005 [ which is correct because ent had it]. I think mdf files are pretty touchy. Does anyone have any good articles on best practices? It seems you cant have a db with the same name as your attachment [ which would make sense] or have mdf files in the Data directory of your SQL Server instance you are trying to attach to. You will get the unc share error if you do. I think I need to start using user Instances but I could be wrong. You cant use them in ent but maybe i will solve my issue with attaching db files to express. I noticed that by default express doesnt install in mix auth mode and there might be some issues with access. How does everyone else normally install their mdf files for quick deployment [ say you want to deploy your db with your app so that users can quickly get started] ?
