Hey all,
Cool place! Has anyone deployed SQL Express silently using one click and an attached a smart client DB from within the app ... would love to see some of the best practices or horror stories! Just kidding... :) I'm about to deploy a smart client using SQL Express and could use some tips from someone who has been there.
Thanks in advance,
Bill

During an install of SQL Server 2005 Express setting the sa password does not work consistently. The install is being run as administrator and I am using an .ini file to pass the settings,
SECURITYMODE=SQL
ADDLOCAL=ALL
SQLBROWSERAUTOSTART=1
SQLAUTOSTART=1
INSTANCENAME=DBSERVER
SAPWD=Westtech#1
and while most times it works correctly, occasionally, maybe 4 out of 10 times it fails to set the password and I have been unable to find any warnings or errors in the logs it generates.
We are coming up on release and this is causing us some real problems. Does anyone have any ideas, something I could look at?
Thank you,

When installing SQL Server 2005 Express and using an .ini file that looks like this,
SECURITYMODE=SQL
ADDLOCAL=ALL
SQLBROWSERAUTOSTART=1
SQLAUTOSTART=1
INSTANCENAME=DBSERVER
SAPWD=Westtech#1
sometimes the sa password is set correctly, while other times it is not. There does not appear to be any particular environment or system setting when it fails vs. when it works.
We are coming up on a release date and this is causing us a serious problem. Can anyone help?
Thank you,

I have a SSRS report developed in Visual Studio 2013 and using SQL server 2012. It has a date control based on parameters which works correctly in the development environment. I can select by day AND I can move from date to date by clicking on the month name to be able to move by month or double clicking to be able to move by year.Â
When the report is deployed to Internet Explorer 11 or Firefox I can only, click back and forward by one day at a time and I can not double click the date control to move by month or double click to move by year. I can type the dates into the parameter box and get the correct result. I have set the compatibility view settings in IE for my server.Â

I've got a SQL Reporting Server 2000 SP2 report that takes 3 parameters. FromDT, ToDT, and LocationCD. The first two parameters are free form text fields that expect a date. The last one is a drop down box. For some reason, when I'm viewing the report through the standard reports folder on the report server I have to click the "View Report" button two times to get the report to render. Clicking it just once, doesn't seem to do anything. The report is a line graph.
There are default values in the FromDT and ToDT parameter fields.
Anyone have any ideas what would be causing the need for the second click?

Hello,
I've developed a desktop application for a company. It uses click once deployment and has a few prereqs: .NET Framework 2.0, j# .NET redistributable, windows installer 3.1 and SQL Server 2005 express edition.
Most of the time the application downloads and installs fine. However, one user has a problem. I'm fairly certain it's machine / OS related and I wonder if there is a way to get around it.
The user has a Windows 2000 machine, Pentium III, with 512 MB of RAM.
On their first try, they received an error while installing SQL Server 2005 Express. The error code the user found in the install log was 70095. Apparently the user found some information directing them to install the current MDAC 2.8 SP 1. After rebooting and trying the install again, it errored out. The new error code is 1706. Below is the install log.
As I said, I'm faily certain it's an OS issue, but I do hope there is a way around the issue other than trying to get the user to upgrade. If you need any other information, please let me know and I'll try to get it from the user.
Thanks,

Hi all,I'm reading some doubles from a DB table using c# and some of these doubles are negative numbers.They are negative because the doubles are GPS data and all my Longitude values are, for example, '-6.214545'.Now, I physically put these doubles into the table by typing the '-' character and then the number.What is happening is that the code is reading it as a positive double, which obviously throws off the whole App as the difference between '-6.214545' and '6.214545' is massive!I've declared them as type decimal(18, 6) Any ideas as to what might be the problem???

Issue
I need to write VS2005 C# code using SQL OLE DB to access SQL Server 2005. I have no choice in that matter. I can create a database user with a password like COMPANY", which is a string of uppercase characters ending in an unmatched double-quote mark.
Using Microsoft SQL Server Server Management Studio I login using Windows Authentication, create an account with the password, COMPANY", check the "Enforce password policy", click "OK", and then exit.
Setup
I launch Microsoft SQL Server Server Management Studio again, select "SQL Server Authentication", type in the account name and the COMPANY" password, click the Connect button, and I'm in.
Problem
Now, I need to connect programmatically and run a stored procedure. The password is stored in clear text in hte Registry€”not my choice, it's a legacy application, and changing that is not an option open to me. (We have probably all seen company safes where the combination is scribbled on the wall in case you forget it!)
Here is the code I use to run the sproc:
DBCONNINFOLib.DBConnectionInfoClass DBConnInfo1 = new DBCONNINFOLib.DBConnectionInfoClass();
String strConnString = DBConnInfo1.GetConnectionString( "" );
OleDbConnection con1 = new OleDbConnection( strConnString );
OleDbCommand cmd1 = con1.CreateCommand();
cmd1.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
String sCmdText = "sp_SomeStoredProcedure";
cmd1.CommandText = sCmdText;
If I set the connection string in the registry to COMPANY", I get an error like this:
Server Error in '/' Application.

The closes to success I have been able to come is to set the password to "COMPANYNAME""" or 'COMPANYNAME"', which results in a System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConection Exception with a HResult of 0x80040e4d, and the message Login failed for user 'username'.
Questions
Can the password be formatted differently in the registry, or somehow processed after retrieving it, so that SQL Server 2005 will accept it?
Is this a bug in .NET Framework or SQL OleDb?
Is this simply a case of "Is it hurts, don't do it"?
Thanks in advance. As with all postings, my job, promotion, product success, company future, or some combination thereof is on the line.

I am performing a series of calculations where accuracy is very important, so have a quick question about single vs double precision variables in SQL 2008.
I'm assuming that there is an easy way to cast a variable that is currently stored as a FLOAT as a DOUBLE prior to these calculations for reduced rounding errors, but I can't seem to find it.
I've tried CAST and CONVERT, but get errors when I try to convert to DOUBLE.
For example...
SELECT CAST(1.0/7.0 AS FLOAT)
SELECT CONVERT(FLOAT, 1.0/7.0)
both give the same 6 decimal place approximation, and the 6 decimals make me think this is single precision.
But I get errors if I try to change the word FLOAT to DOUBLE in either one of those commands...
SELECT CAST(1.0/7.0 AS DOUBLE)
gives "Incorrect syntax near )"
SELECT CONVERT(DOUBLE, 1.0/7.0)
gives "Incorrect syntax near ,"

Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express?The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe?
TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)

Hi,
I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
-----------------------------------------------------------
The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
I tried to re-install the SQL Server Express another 7 times wth no luck.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bill

How do I set up my SQL Server2005 Express, so that I can use some sample databases for my VS 2008 Express? Any difference for SQL Server 2005 Express between VS 2008 Expressdownload and SQL Server 2005 Express download?

Help!!
I used to have an Access database which had tables for users, roles, actions etc.
This was used by a C++ client app (using ADO) which logged in, got the user ID and password (by raising a login dialog ) and then checked these against a user table and then assigned the roles and possible actions.
Now we have SWL Server Express 2005 - NT Authorisation - how do I get/pass the user ID to the C++ Application so it can get the associated roles? Seems silly to have 2 logins.
Better still can I do away with the App's User table or make its password column invisible to all users bar Admin and the C++ App?

SQL Server 2005 Express keeps putting in a different password than the one I chose. I would check the properties on the login I want to change. Then I change the password and it gets accepted. When I try my web application, I get the dreaded "login failed for <loginname>". I look at the properties again and see my password never change. Is this a bug? I ever tried this syntax to no avail:
CREATE LOGIN <loginname> WITH PASSWORD='<mypassword>' CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF, CHECK_POLICY = OFF

Every night we connect to a remote server using Linked Server and copy details from that database to a loading table, then load it into the 'real' table in our own environment. The remove database we load it from has indexes/primary keys that match the 'real', however the 'loading' table itself does not have any indexes or primary keys, both are SQL Server 2005 machines.
In the loading table we first of all truncate it then do a select insert statement from the remote server, then we then truncate the 'real' table and load iit from the 'loading' table.
The issue is when we attempted to load it into our 'real' table from our loading table there was a duplicate row, and our process failed with a Primary Key violation.
I checked the source with does have the same primary key's in, it did not contain a duplicate row and I checked the loading table and that did contain a duplicate row.
My question this is in what circumstances this could happen ?

Just like with Access DB, can we set password for database in SQL Server 2005 Express ?
Reason to do so is, user with Login having sysadmin previliage can acess all databases in SQL server.
so just want to restrict database access to only those users who knows the password.
Is there any possible solution ? Pls comment.
Thanks.

Hi, I installed VB express, can't recall if SQL Server Express was installed with VB or not at the same time, but I do have SQL Express installed. All I see is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 --> Configuration tools and --> Documentation and Tutorials. I must be missing something so I can create, view, alter and delete tables. The install gave no signs of installation problems. Any ideas what went wrong?

My system had a beta version of Visual Studio 2005 Express on it which I uninstalled. Apparently not correctly, as I can not install SQL Server 2005 Express. I have tried to removal procedures which either give me an error message or I cannot find the items in the Add/Remove program list that are requested. That is, it looks like the system should accept SQL Server 2005 Express, but it does not.
I have successfully installed Visual C++ 2005 Express. I have no clue as to what to do next and there is no documentation on what to do. I have looked at the various postings here, tried several of them, to no avail.
When I search the registry there are some 70 entries that have the string €œSQLEXPRESS€? in the entry. I am unsure if these are related to my previous beta install or related to the system (a475c HP Pavilion) needs. I am reluctant to start removing those entries.
So now what do I do? Is this really that difficult? And what if I decided to buy Visual Studio 2006, whenever it may be introduced? Will I not be able to install it?
Here is the log file that was generated yesterday, my latest attempt.

Please help!
I want to install SQL Server 2005 Express Adv. I saw that you had to un-install the beta version prior. So I did. When I go to install SQL Server 2005 Express Adv, I get a message saying that SQL Server detected the previous Beta version, goto add/remove programs blah...blah...blah. Nothing was listed in a/r programs. I ran an uninstall microsoft had on their web site, and I got a message saying nothing was deteceted. I deleted all folders related.
Somehow when I initially ran the unistall, not all components were removed. I am baffled. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not savvy enough to solve this one. Can anyone help?

Hi all,
I've been trying all day to install SQL Server Express edition on my development machine, I 've uninstalled other Express Editions that I have previously installed, at least none show in add/remove programs. When i try to run the setup program i get the message that i have incompatible programs still installed. I don't know what they would be. None are listed in the program list as I have said. I tried to run the uninstallbeta program on the SQL Server Express page, but I keep getting an error that the "framedyn.dll" cannot be found, reinstalling the application may help! lol !
Any idea's ?
Thanks in advance.

I have tried to run an app that requires sql server. It installs sql server express SP2 as part of its install package, but it doesn't work for some reason (works for other people I know).
This was the message I got:
"An error has occuredwhile establishing a connection to the server.When connecting to SQL Server 2005 this failure may be caused by teh fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections (Provider SQl Network interfaces, Error 26, error locating server /instance specified"
The owner of the original software suggested I try and download it from microsoft which I did, from here :
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/express/bb410792.aspx
It all appeared fine, the download downloaded and the install started as it should. The system config check is all ticks, but towards the end there is a set up progress page which has the following items:
Product
SQL setup support files shows setup completed
SQL Native Client
When it gets to this bit it displays a pop up that says An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'
This has happened on a couple of occasions. Bearing in mind that I think this file is in the setup that I downloaded from microsoft I am at a loss.
After this it tries to finish the other items on the set up progress page which are
SQL VSS Writer
SQL Server Database Services
Workstation components
SQL VSS Writer shows as set up correctly, the others fail.
The next button highlights , then the installation finishes, but SQL Server is not properly installed.
Any help appreciated
