Efficiently Creating Random Numbers In Very Large Table
Jan 19, 2007
Hello,
I need to sample data in a very large table in SQL Server 2000 (a gazillion rows of Performance Monitor statitics).
I'd like to take the top 5%, for instance, based upon a column containing random numbers.
Can anyone suggest a highly efficient method of populating a column with random numbers.
Thanks in advance.

I have a table with a column ID of ContentID. The ID in that column is all NULLs. I need a way to change those nulls to a number. It does not matter what type of number it is as long as they are different. Can someone point me somewhere with a piece of T-SQL that I could use to do that. There are over 24000 rows so cursor change will not be very efficient.
Thanks for any help

I'm grappling with this issue which I thought was basic VB programming; I'm trying to insert a random number (between 100 and 999) into a SQL table column (=Status_ID). This is input as part of a user submitting helpdesk requests via a APS.Net Web Form. The 'Status_ID' field is obviously not visible to the user but will help reference this Helpdesk request on the database. Here is the code:Protected Sub submitButton_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles submitButton.Click If Page.IsValid Then ' Define data objects Dim conn As SqlConnection Dim comm As SqlCommand ' Read the connection string from web.config Dim connectionString As String = _ ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("ITNet_Students").ConnectionString ' Initialize connection conn = New SqlConnection(connectionString) ' Create command comm = New SqlCommand( _ "INSERT INTO HelpDesk (First_Name, Last_Name, StudentID, PersonalEmail," & _ "CategoryID, SubjectID, Description, StatusID) " & _ "VALUES (@First_Name, @Last_Name, @StudentID, @PersonalEmail, " & _ "@CategoryID, @SubjectID, @Description, @StatusID)", conn) ' Use randomize Randomize() Dim randomvalue As Integer ' Generate random value between 999 and 100. randomvalue = Int((900 * Rnd()) + 100) ' Add command parameters comm.Parameters.Add("@First_Name", System.Data.SqlDbType.NVarChar, 50) comm.Parameters("@First_Name").Value = fnameTextBox.Text . . . comm.Parameters.Add("@StatusID", System.Data.SqlDbType.Int) comm.Parameters("@StatusID").Value = randomvalue 'Enclose database code in Try-Catch-Finally Try ' Open connection conn.Open() ' Execute the command comm.ExecuteNonQuery() ' Reload page if the query executed successfully Response.Redirect("HelpDesk.aspx") Catch ' Display error message dbErrorMessage.Text = _ "Error submitting the help desk request! Please try again later, and/or change the entered data!" Finally 'close connection conn.Close() End Try End If End Sub----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I keep getting the error message under 'Catch' and the page 'HelpDesk.aspx' is not reloading; the 'comm.ExecuteNonQuery()' is not executing. Can anyone spot any inconsistencies in the declaration of the 'randomvalue' variable?P.S: this code works fine if you replace 'randomvalue' with any integer in 'comm.Parameters("@StatusID").Value = randomvalue'

Situation:
SQL Server 2000.
At my new employer they have a production database on one server and a copy of it that is set to read only on another server which is used for reporting.
#1
They have an SQL Server Agent job on the production server that: (2 times a day)
Backs up the production database
Copies the backup file to a directory on the reporting server. (Its pretty big and can take time if there are problems with the LAN)
#2
They have an SQL Server Agent job on the Reporting server that: (scheduled to run 2 hours or so after the job on server 1 has run€¦they figured that it would be a safe bet that the backup and copy process of the first job would be done by then)
Breaks the user connections to the reporting database
Performs a restore on the reporting database using the backup file that was copied to the holding directory by the production job.
Sets some permissions for various users.
Sets the reporting database to READ ONLY.
What I would like to do is find a more efficient way to create this reporting database, I have started doing research into DTS methods but would like some opinions from more experienced users.
Thank You,
Wade

I am trying to get random numbers to have a unique value for different processes, then I can identify each process. What happens is that I use rand() function without seed, so I got my random numbers, but after shutting down SQLServer and try to get again another random number after booting up, the same series of random numbers is given again and again. So if anyone knows how I can get unique values, even though reseting the server, and using random function or any other method which automatically provides unique values,I'll really appreciate it if you let me know it.
This is the function: select rand()

I have a table with a field called "host" and I want to replace the value of this column in each row with 'Host' followed by a random number. I have created the below function to do this:
DECLARE @Random varchar;
SELECT @Random = CONVERT(int, (20+1)*RAND())+ 1;
UPDATE AnalogLines Set [Host Name] = 'Host' + @Random
This sorta works... the problem is, the random number is determine and then the SAME random number is applied to each row. I need a different random number for every row. Any ideas?

Hi there... I've got an interesting one, that I can't seem to get my head around. Maybe some legend out there might be able to give me a hand...
I'm looking for a way to produce a weighted set of random numbers. I'm doing some work for a client at the moment, and they want to issue 3 random "reward cards" to their members at certain times. These are a bit like discount vouchers etc. The problem is some cards have need to have a higher frequency than the others. I guess a similar problem to baseball cards, you buy a pack of cards, you get mostly common cards, but every now and then, you get a rare card.
Here is the table setup:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Cards](
[CardID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_Cards_CardID] DEFAULT (newid()),
[CardName] [nvarchar](50) NOT NULL,
[InsertRatio] [float] NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_Cards] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[CardID] ASC
)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]
) ON [PRIMARY]
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 1', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 2', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 3', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 4', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 5', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 6', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 7', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 8', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Common 9', NULL) /* Null implies the card is a common card */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Rare 1', 0.02) /* 1:50 ratio */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Rare 2', 0.02) /* 1:50 ratio */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Rare 3', 0.02) /* 1:50 ratio */
INSERT INTO [dbo].[Cards]([CardName],[InsertRatio]) VALUES('Very Rare 1', 0.005) /* 1:200 ratio */
So what I need to do, is have a Stored Proc that I can execute and it returns back 3 random rows. Now in that single run, a card can't be duplicated.
Notice the Insert Ratio column? This has the ratio of the probability, eg a 1:50 insert ratio is equal to 0.02. For the common cards, a NULL value indicates it is a common.
Eventually, this table would have about 1000 rows in it, and about 200 of those would have various ratios (eg 1:50, 1:200, 1:1000, 1:8000 etc)
Any ideas or comments?
Thanks in advance.

Dear all,
I'm using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edetion.
I have the following stored procedure that is executed against two tables (RecrodedCalls) and (RecordedCallsTags)
The table RecordedCalls has more than 10000000 Records and RecordedCallsTags is about 7500000 Records
Now the lines marked in baby blue are dynamic (Dynamic where statement) that varies every time this stored procedure is executed, may it contains 7 columns in condetion statement or may it contains 10 columns, or 2 coulmns.....etc
Now I want to create non-clustered indexes on the columns used in the where statement, THE DTA suggests different indexing whenever the where statement changes.
So what is the right way to created indexes, to create one index on all the columns once, or to create separate indexes on each columns, sometimes the DTA suggests 5 columns together at one if I€™m using 5 conditions, I can€™t accumulate all the possible indexes hence the where statement always vary from situation to situation, below the SP:
CREATE TABLE #tempLookups (ID int identity(0,1),Code NVARCHAR(100),NameE NVARCHAR(500),NameA NVARCHAR(500))
CREATE TABLE #tempTable (ID int identity(0,1),TypesCount INT,CallsType NVARCHAR(50))
INSERT INTO #tempLookups SELECT Code, NameE, NameA FROM lookups WHERE [Type] = 'CALLTYPES' ORDER BY Ordering ASC
INSERT INTO #tempTable SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT(RecordedCalls.ID)) As TypesCount,RecordedCalls.CallType as CallsType
FROM RecordedCalls LEFT OUTER JOIN RecordedCallsTags ON RecordedCalls.ID = RecordedCallsTags.CallID
WHERE RecordedCalls.ID <= '9369907'
AND (RecordedCalls.CallDate BETWEEN cast ('01 Jan 1910 00:00:00:000' as datetime ) AND cast ( '01 Jan 2210 00:00:00:000' as datetime ))
AND (RecordedCalls.Duration BETWEEN 0 AND 1000000)
AND RecordedCalls.ChannelID NOT IN('62061','62062','62063','62064','64110','64111','64112','64113','64114','69860','69861','69862','69863','69866','69867','69868')
AND RecordedCalls.ServerID NOT IN('2')
AND RecordedCalls.AgentID NOT IN('1000010000')
AND (RecordedCallsTags.TagID is null OR RecordedCallsTags.TagID NOT IN('100','200'))
AND RecordedCalls.IsDeleted='false'
GROUP BY RecordedCalls.CallType
SELECT IsNull(#tempTable.TypesCount, 0) AS TypesCount, CASE('English')
WHEN 'Arabic' THEN #tempLookups.NameA
ELSE #tempLookups.NameE
END AS CallsType FROM
#tempTable RIGHT OUTER JOIN #tempLookups ON #tempTable.CallsType = #tempLookups.Code
DROP TABLE #tempLookups
DROP TABLE #tempTable
Thanks all,
Tayseer

Trying to understand the results. Here are some random numbers and Castings. My question is why do they produce the datetimes they do?
SELECT CAST((1.1) AS DATETIME)
SELECT CAST((200) AS DATETIME)
SELECT CAST((15) AS DATETIME)
SELECT CAST((99.99999) AS DATETIME)

My main table has the following structure:t1 (id_primary, id_secundary, name) i.e. [(1,1,"name1"), (2,1,"name2")]I want to join this table with the following second table:t2 (id_primary, id_secundary, value) i.e. [(1, NULL, "value1"),(NULL,1,"value2")]The join should first try to find a match on id_primary and only if thatfails it should find a match on id_secundary. Every row in t1 is matchedagainst a single row in t2.The following query works:selecta.name, isnull(b.value, c.value)fromt1 a left outer join t2 b on a.id_primary = b.id_primaryleft outer join t2 c on a.id_secundary = c.id_secundaryI'm wondering though if it would be possible to write a query that only usest2 once, since it actualy is quite a complex query that is calculated twicenow. Any ideas (besides using a temp table)?

We have an application in which one particular stored procedure goes from .3 second response times to 20-40 second response times, suddenly, at seemingly random times of the day. Recompiling that particular stored proc fixes the problem temporarily.
The 3 main tables have between 500K and 1.5M records, are defragged daily and contain the past 42 days of work. Old records are deleted once daily. The slowdowns do not conincide with the deletions, occuring without a clear pattern. Nothing else on going on on that server -- it is dedicated to this one app. Nothing shows in event log. It is clustered Windows 2003, with SQL Server 2005 RTM version. SP2 of SQL2005 due for an install next Monday. This behavior also was seen when the app was on a different server running SQL2K SP3, so think the underlying problem is some sort of design issue with the app, not a SQL server bug. Has anyone seen something like this and what suggestions do you have for doing a permenant fix? Think that a recompile of the sp causes a new execution plan, but why would that be necessary daily or even several times a day? 30-50 users are banging away at it. The app is an order entry system. The tables contain what are basically order histories and label data. Am running out of good ideas. Thanks for any help.

Hi All,
I have a large number of SPs that I would like to be able to document and provide this documentation to prospective clients. That is, provide them enough information without giving them the source code for the procedures.
I have found that all the parameters are in the sys.parameters table.
But I was wondering. Are the fields that are sent back out of an SP captured and recorded somewhere in the SQL Server catalog?
Is there an easy way to find out what fields are coming out of an SP?
Thanks in Advance

Hi there,
I am getting a headache trying to research what to do when you have a large number of parameters to include in a query. For example, if I have a large number of checkboxes for the user to pick criteria for a report and they select several, I'm assuming it would be bad practise to say:
WHERE Field = "a" OR Field = "b" OR Field = "c" OR Field = "d" OR Field = "e" OR.....etc etc etc
Is there a good solution for this, given that the number of parameters may vary dramatically depending on what the user selects to include in a report?!
I'm running SQL Server 2000 with an ASP front end.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

What could be causing this? The reports are making queries through an OLE DB provider. There are no scheduled jobs, and the load doesn't seem that heavy.

Hello,
I have a VB.NET Windows Application with a SQL 2K5 back end.
The application creates a view which produces approximately 5 million records. I am attempting to transfer these records to a table programmatically, but every attempt causes a timeout. The name of the source server and view will change depending on the client's installation.
Using the standard SQL connection/command objects with the "INSERT INTO TABLE (SELECT * FROM VIEW)" doesn't work at all.
What is the best way to transfer these records programmatically?
Thanks,

I work with a large and complex reporting system with several hundred reports: the Programmability; Stored Procedures node of the object explorer has become very difficult to navigate.
Is there any metadata that can be embedded in the stored procs that would create subfolders like the existing System Stored Procedures node in this node of the object explorer?
I suspect that the correct answers are:
Rename all your queries with a rational naming convention;
Cull the deadwood;
Assign them to categories then export them to separate databases.
Unfortunately, one of these has already been done, and the other two will break several hundred dependent processes - the recoding and retesting is neither economical nor desirable.
Still, all advice is welcome. Pitch your answers at a banking geek who does intermediate to advanced stored procedures and triggers, but isn't allowed to play with sharp things (like sys objects) - but I can probably get help from a grown-up on the sysadmin team: I have discovered that the rumours about human sacrifice are baseless, and they will perform favours in return for beer.
This is also a good time to ask: just how many stored procs and functions are you allowed in SQL Server 2005?
Nile.

I have a procedure that creates a large dynamic view of several tables. The view is a union view of up to 15 tables. The table names are all <name>_DDMM where name is the standard table name and ddmm is the day and month of the tables data. The tables are created by a software supplied by another company, so I can not ensure that the tables will always have exactly the same fields or number of fields. Sometimes the company will add more fields to the tables in thier updates. So, I have to include the field names in the SQL exec command to create the query. This makes for a very long exec command and depending on the number of tables it needs to include, it can require upwards of a 16,000 character string. Obviously, this can't work, so I had to break up the variable in order to create the procedure. However, I'm wondering if there isn't a better method than creating three different 8000 varchar variables and having overflow write to the next variable in line. Especially if the number of tables needs to be expanded, it could be a problem. Is there a better way to run a create view exec command on a large number of characters?
EDIT: Changed the title to read Procedurally generating a large view.

I have a report with a column which contains either a string such as "N/A" or a number such as 12. A user exports the report to Excel. In Excel the numbers are formatted as text.
I already tried to set the value as CDbl which returns error for the cells containing a string.
The requirement is to export the column to Excel with the numbers formatted as numbers and the strings such as "N/A' in the same column as string.
Any suggestions?

Hello.
I need to select a random record from TABLE. It might look easy with using RAND() function, but the tricky part is that ID's which are the PRIMARY KEY, were assigned as a random number.
So right now ID's in that TABLE look some thing like that: -18745, 45809, 129, -5890023, 487910943, -209, etc...
If any one have any ideas please respond.
Thanks in advance.
