Attaching AdventureWorks Database

Mar 21, 2007

Today I installed SQLEXPR.EXE that I found here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=09.00.3042&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=5120&LinkId=20476

I made sure that I downloaded the 64-bit version.

I then wanted to download and install the Adventure Works database located here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E719ECF7-9F46-4312-AF89-6AD8702E4E6E&displaylang=en

Since I am running Vista 64-bit, I downloaded and installed AdventureWorksDB_x64. It wouldn't install. I got "Access is denied" and CREATE FILE error plus several others.

I then uninstalled it and downloaded AdventureWorksDB - this is the X86 version. It installed fine.

Can anyone explain what am I missing? Thanks!

Error In Creating Or Attaching Database

Dec 6, 2006

I was getting following error while creating a database or attaching a database to sql server 2005

"The file <<*.mdf>> is compressed but does not reside in a read-only database or filegroup.."

In this scenario, if you try sp_attach_db procedure, you get following error:
Msg 5118, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

After
little bit of troubleshooting, I found this was happening because of a
folder option (of the folder where database file reside (in case of
attach) or being created (in case of create)).

Go to folder
properties, General Tab, click on Advanced button, check "Compress or
Encrypt attributes" section. If the first option (Compress contents to
save disk space) is checked, you get that error. Uncheck it to fix that
problem.

Syntax Error Attaching Database - T-SQL

May 20, 2008

Hi all,

I'm trying to attach a database file and it's associated database log file to SQL Server. However I am using the 'SQLDataRoot' value from the registry to determine the absolute path to the DB file and DB log file. Like so...

USE [master]

DECLARE @RC int

/* read path to SQL Server Express Data directory from registry */
DECLARE @sql_server_data_dir sysname
EXEC @RC = master..xp_regread N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE',N'SOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1Setup',N'SQLDataRoot', @sql_server_data_dir OUTPUT
SET @sql_server_data_dir = @sql_server_data_dir + N'Data'

CREATE DATABASE [PROJECT_DB] ON
(FILENAME = '''' + @sql_server_data_dir + 'PROJECT_DB.mdf'''),
(FILENAME = '''' + @sql_server_data_dir + 'PROJECT_DB_log.ldf''') FOR ATTACH;

GO

I have also tried using the sp_attach_db stored procedure as follows

EXEC @RC = dbo.sp_attach_db 'PROJECT_DB',
'''' + @sql_server_data_dir + 'PROJECT_DB.mdf''',
'''' + @sql_server_data_dir + 'PROJECT_DB_log.ldf'''

They both the error:

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 18
Incorrect syntax near '+'.

The quotes in the calls are single quotes not double quotes in case someone queries that. Thank you.

Paul

Error When Attaching Adventure Works Database

Oct 14, 2006

Hello Everyone,

I am very new to SQL and just completed an install of SQL 2005 Express. After install, I downloaded the Adventure Works database and attempted to attach through both the Object Browser (right-click 'Databases'--->'Attach') and by running the script that is located on the SQL download page where I got the Adventure Works db.

Here's the error that I get:

"Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 8, object ID 1, Index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes."

I have attempted to go through the help files, but unfortunately the above message is too cryptic for me and I have no idea what it's telling me.

Can someone help?

Thanks!!

Database Explorer In VB Express:AdventureWorks.mdf-Files Do Not Match The Primary File Of The Database

Nov 5, 2007

Hi all,

I downloaded and ran AdventureWorks.msi into my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) one year ago.But I did not know how to attach it to my SSMSE then. Last week, I deleted it from the "Add or Remove" of Control Panel and I downloaded the new AdventureWork.msi and installed it my SSMSE. Today, I tried to use the Database Explorer of VB 2005 Express for the first Stored Procedure programming. I clicked on AdventureWorks.mdf and I got the following error: One or more files do not match the primary of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupt and should be restored from a backup. Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'CENADe1enxshc'. Log file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataAdventureWorks_Data_log.ldf' does not match the primary file. It may be from a different database of the log may have been rebuilt previously. Please help and advise me how to correct this problem.

BIDS Noob Requesting Help With Error Attaching Auto-named Database

Apr 25, 2008

Greetings, helpful people of the Internet.

I'm learning to use BIDS, and have been going through the exercise in Chapter 19 of the book Professional SQL Server 2005 Integration Services. I'm probably in over my head with this since I've never used any SQL services/software before, but the company I'm interning at wants to build a workflow using SSIS, and for some reason unbeknownst to me, I volunteered to train myself for the task. I'm at a part in the book exercise where I'm editing one of the components of a Data Flow task - an OLE DB Destination. When I try to select the table/view in the editor for this, it gives me the following error:

€œAn attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsgroseMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsCase Study ExerciseCase Study ExerciseCase Study.database failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.€?

When I googled this, most people seemed to be getting it through other SQL software, so I'm not sure if the error has the same cause or not. I know that the file in the above error message already exists, but I don't understand why the task editor won't just let me select a database that already exists so I can complete the component. Can anyone explain this to me?

Database Owner Changes When Attaching Database

Jun 26, 2007

I have a database with 'sa' as the database owner.
When I detach the database and than attach it, I get the following error: "The proposed new database owner is already a user in the database". When I look in my Management Studio, I see that my database is attached and it has my domain name as database owner.

So it seems like that whenever a database is attached, SQL Server changes the database owner to the user who is attaching the database.

Am I right or is it something else?

One more question, is it good or bad to put 'sa' as the database owner for all my databases?

Thanks.

Install AdventureWorks Database

Oct 8, 2007

I'm not sure that I installed the AdventureWorks database when I originally installed SQL Server 2005 on my pc, but I thought I'd better go thru the tutorial and it uses AdventureWorks, so I put my CD in to install it and started the install.

When I got to the screen where you choose your components, I only checked the Sample Database selections at the bottom. Then I got a screen saying the components had already been installed. So I thought I must have installed AdventureWorks when I did the original install, but the tutorial says to go to Registered Servers and do a new Server Registration choosing the AdventureWorks database on the Connection Properties tab. But it isn't listed there when I browse the server's databases.

How can I get it installed?

NOTE: I had SQL Server installed on my C: drive, but had a major corruption issue, so I added a second hard drive to my system and installed XP on it. So my boot drive is now by G: drive, not C:. SQL Server and most of the other programs I use have been re-installed on G:. I DO have northwind.mdb & ldb files on my C: drive. Would it be easiest to just restore them to G:? Are they the AdventureWorks database?
Thanks.

Log Shipping For Training Database

May 12, 2008

We have a user Training database that we would like to keep updated from our Production database. Users would make different modifications to the Training and Production databases. It is the user updates on the secondary that bother me and I have not seen anything that indicates Log Shipping would fail if new random records are added to both the secondary and primary.

Would Log Shipping be appropriate for this nightly update of Training from Production?

Getting Table Names From AdventureWorks Database

Apr 24, 2008

Hello,
I have ran into a problem when i'm getting table names in c#.
I have tried the sql command:
select name from sysobjects where type='U' order by name
So it returns the names without a problem. But when I try to access to some tables using their names (to retrieve the columns) I sometimes get the error "Invalid object name" following by the name of the table.
So I realized the if the table was not under dbo user then i would get this error.
for example: "select name from ContactCreditCard"
gives me error because in database management tool it is shown like this: Sales.ContactCreditCard
How can i fix this problem? How to get that prefix of the tables?

Thank you,
