Error Reportings -- To Except Or Not Expect Or Return?

May 11, 2007

You have seen a chair in a public room and go back after a while to acquire it. Is it unexpected that the object is not there anymore?

I implement the business logic in stored procedures. Once user orders some service, the actions carry out are: a)check they have sufficient funds on their balance; and, b) a price check is made selecting the latest from pricelist. The newly created job entry refers the price in the pricelist table according to service_id and the issued pricelist date.

These are data validity checks, which must be done in a multiuser database. In the session beginning, user gets prices and funds. These data are not locked throughout the session -- another process may change the records. Therefore, the extra "business" checks are needed to preserve data correctness at the start of every transaction. One way to report the errors would be to raise an error.

Consider the primary-foreign key violations. They are raised by system with severity level of 16. Uniqueness violation is raised with severity 14. The MSSQL reference http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms164086.aspx tells us that this is a sort of error, which can be corrected by user. Indeed, (s)he can. But the exceptions are unexpected situations. Exception processing consumes huge CPU processing power if some occurs. Normally, programs allocate resources and use them. If resource cannot be allocated -- app exits with exception. It just has nothing to do. However, there is nothing exceptional in shared data access by multiple concurrent processes in a multithread/multiuser/distributed application. Since, we cannot lock the user resources during user session, we should be prepared to concurrent data changes. Therefore, I find the exception raising inappropriate tool.

Consider a situation, when one user is assigned to a group. Nothing prevents from another admin to remove the group at the same time. Therefore, our user management application should be ready to expected "group does not exist" "error" result. I even disagree that this is an error, since it is perfectly valid to have such a situation. It is like you have seen a chair in a room and later return to take it. But the chair is not there anymore. Is it unexpected? The case should not be exceptional, IMO.

So we have:
1. Severity 1-10 "informational messages";
2. Severity 11-16 errors; and
3. RETURN error_code.

Which should be used? Anything else? Do my considerations make sense?

Return Error Code (return Value) From A Stored Procedure Using A Sql Task

Feb 12, 2008

I have a package that I have been attempting to return a error code after the stored procedure executes, otherwise the package works great.

I call the stored procedure from a Execute SQL Task (execute Marketing_extract_history_load_test ?, ? OUTPUT)
The sql task rowset is set to NONE. It is a OLEB connection.

I have two parameters mapped:

tablename input varchar 0 (this variable is set earlier in a foreach loop) ADO.
returnvalue output long 1

I set the breakpoint and see the values change, but I have a OnFailure conditon set if it returns a failure. The failure is ignored and the package completes. No quite what I wanted.

The first part of the sp is below and I set the value @i and return.

CREATE procedure [dbo].[Marketing_extract_history_load_TEST]

@table_name varchar(200),

@i int output

as

Why is it not capturing and setting the error and execute my OnFailure code? I have tried setting one of my parameter mappings to returnvalue with no success.

Query Optimizer Does Not Use The Index I Expect

Jun 27, 2007

I am trying to resolve performance issues in a third party application. I have run the profiler and found a transaction that performs a table scan against a 6 million row table. This transaction occurs repeatedly, so I thought, just add an index on the columns in the where clause used here. After adding the index, I looked at the estimated execution plan in Query analyzer, and I find that it is still performing the table scan. If I run the query it takes over 60 seconds to run, if i add an index hint, it runs in under a second. I ran DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS to see if the statistics were up to date:

Statistics for INDEX 'IX_Finish_dept'.

FailParentOnFailure And MaxErrorCount - Not Functioning As I Would Expect

Mar 31, 2008

I have a package that executes a number of tasks includng executing other packages. In one of the sub-packages, I am looping through a directory, processing files in that directory, and copying the files to another directory after completion using a for each file enumerator and file system task. The file system task has a failure precedence constraint leaving it going into a script task which simply pops up a message box saying that an error occurred.

What I am trying to do is to allow the sub package (and parent package) to continue execution if there is an error during the file system task. This question really is unrelated to the file system task specifically... in general, how can an error be ignored and execution not stop?

On the file system task, I've set MaxErrorCount = 0 and FailParentOnFailure and FailPackageOnFailure are set to False. With MaxErrorCount = 0, the file system task itself does not fail but its parent container (the for each file enumerator) does. This failure then propogates all the way up to the parent package and execution stops. I have gotten around this by setting MaxErrorCount = 0 also on the for each file enumerator, the execute package task, and all its ancestors going all the way up to the root of the main package. This works, but maintaining this would be a nightmare. Setting MaxErrorCount = 0 and FailParentOnFailure = False at the point only where I expect the error seems like it should be enough but it obviously is not. What am I missing here?

FTP Task - StopOnFailure Not Working As I Expect?

Dec 8, 2006

Hi

I'm using an FTP task in a loop to download files from a WAN based FTP server. I've got a script to generate the name of the file I require and place into a variable. Problem is sometimes some of the remote files haven't been published so the FTP component errors and the package fails.

I tried setting StopOnFailure to False - all I get is the following errors[FTP Task] Error: File represented by "User::RemotePath" does not exist.
[FTP Task] Error: Attempt to read message string for 0x80020918 failed with error 0xc02090f3. Make sure all message related files are registered.

What I want to do is ignore the error and perform the next loop iteration

Is this a bug, or am I missing something

Service Broker Doesn't Produce What I Expect [Please Read]

Aug 4, 2006

Hi,

I made a simple service broker code that is:

-- step 1: Enable Broker

use master

alter database AdventureWorks

set enable_broker

go

-- step 2: prepare

use AdventureWorks

go

create schema CustomerService

go

create schema EmailService

go

-- step 3: Message Type

create message type [//AdventureWorks/Sales/CustomerDetails]

validation = well_formed_xml

go

-- step 4: Contract

create contract [//AdventureWorks/Sales/SendCustomerDetails]

(

[//AdventureWorks/Sales/CustomerDetails] sent by initiator

)

go

-- step 5: Queue

create queue CustomerService.NewCustomerQueue

go

create queue EmailService.NewCustomerEmailQueue

go

-- step 6: Service

create service [//AdventureWorks/Sales/CustomerService]

on queue CustomerService.NewCustomerQueue

go

create service [//AdventureWorks/Sales/EmailService]

on queue EmailService.NewCustomerEmailQueue

(

[//AdventureWorks/Sales/SendCustomerDetails]

)

go

-- step 7:

create procedure CustomerService.proc_SendMessage

(

@firstName nvarchar(50)

,@lastName nvarchar(50)

,@emailAddress nvarchar(200)

)

as

-- sending a message

declare @message nvarchar(max)

set @message = nchar(0xFEFF)

+ '<Customer>'

+ '<CustomerName>' + @firstName + ' ' + @lastName + '</CustomerName>'

+ '<EmailAddress>' + @emailAddress + '</EmailAddress>'

+ '</Customer>'

declare @conversationHandle uniqueidentifier

begin dialog conversation @conversationHandle

from service [//AdventureWorks/Sales/CustomerService]

to service '//AdventureWorks/Sales/EmailService'

on contract [//AdventureWorks/Sales/SendCustomerDetails]

;send on conversation @conversationHandle

message type [//AdventureWorks/Sales/CustomerDetails]

(

@message

)

go

create procedure CustomerService.proc_ReceiveMessage

as

-- receiving a message

declare @conversationHandle uniqueidentifier, @messageTypeName nvarchar(256)

;receive top(1)

@conversationHandle = conversation_handle

,@messageTypeName = message_type_name

from CustomerService.NewCustomerQueue

if @@rowcount = 0

begin

print 'No further message found in CustomerService.NewCustomerQueue'

end

go

exec CustomerService.proc_SendMessage 'Bishoy','George','bishoy@bishoy.com'

exec CustomerService.proc_ReceiveMessage

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now the problem is:

when I execute the 2 procedures I receive:
(0 row(s) affected)
No further message found in CustomerService.NewCustomerQueue

Why doesn't the broker send the message?

Is there any needed preparing should I have done first?

Thank you and best regards.

Full Text Search Indexing HTML - Does The Filter Expect Certain Tags To Be Present As Standard?

Jul 10, 2007

Hi, I was wondering if any SQL Server gurus out there could help me...I
have a table which contains text resources for my application. The text
resources are multi-lingual so I've read that if I add a html language
indicator meta tag e.g.<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="ES">and
store the text in a varbinary column with a supporting Document Type
column containing ".html" of varchar(5) then the full text index
service should be intelligent about the language word breakers it
applies when indexing the text. (I hope this is correct technique for
best multi-lingual support in a single table?)However, when I come to query this data the results always return 0 rows (no errors are encountered). e.g.DECLARE @SearchWord nvarchar(256)SET @SearchWord = 'search' -- Yes, this word is definitely present in my resources.SELECT * FROM Resource WHERE CONTAINS(Document, @SearchWord)I'm a little puzzled as Full Text search is working fine on another table that employs an nvarchar column (just plain text, no html).Does the filter used for full text indexing of html expect certain tags to be present as standard? E.g. <html> and <body> tags? At present the data I have stored might look like this (no html or body wrapping tags):Example record 1 data: <META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN">Search for keywords:Example record 2 data: <META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN">Sorry no results were found for your search.etc.Any pointers / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,Gavin.UPDATE: I have tried wrapping the text in more usual html tags and re-built the full text index but I still never get any rows returned for my query results. Example of content wrapping tried - <HTML><HEAD><META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN"></HEAD><BODY>Test text.</BODY></HTML>I've also tried stripping all html tags from the content and set the Document Type column = .txt but I still get no rows returned?!?

How Do I Return An Error Message If Certain Parameters Are Not Met?

May 14, 2008

I hope I'm posting this question in the proper forum, please pardon me if I am not. Here's my situation. I have an application written in VB.Net connecting to a SQL 2005 database. I have a stored procedure that is looking for duplicate entries of a "Company Name" prior to running the stored procedure. If there is no duplicate Company Name want the stored procedure to run, if there is a duplicate I want to return an error message alerting the user to the fact that the Company Name they are attempting to add already exists. I have my if statement but I'm not sure how to return an error message within this context. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many Thanks-

IF(SELECT COUNT(CompanyDimID) FROM dbo.CompanyDim WHERE CompanyName = @CompanyDim) = 0

ELSE
(I want to return an error message in the ELSE portion to call out that we have a duplicate Company Name)

Error_number() Won't Return Error Code

Jan 4, 2007

hi all,

i have sql statement in ExecuteSQLTask, connecting to AdventureWorks

BEGIN TRY
insert into person.contacts(contactid) values (1);
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
SELECT ERROR_NUMBER() AS ErrorNumber;
END CATCH;

i purposely put a table that does not exist in the database to catch
the error. however, the error number that is 208 won't appear, instead
the whole error message will be displayed.

if i change the query in try block to
insert into person.contact(contactid) values (1);

it'll return the error number 544, which is correct.

what did i do wrong?
thanks!

Stored Procedure Does Not Return Records Error In VB

Jul 28, 2007

I am using SQL Server 2005 std edition SP2 on a Windows 2003 server. I have created a simple stored procedure that deletes all records from two tables:

BEGIN

SET NOCOUNT ON

DELETE FROM dbo.table1

DELETE FROM dbo.table2

END

Executing the procedure generates the message "The stored procedure executed successfully but did not return records." which produces an error condition when run from an Access 2007 VB module using the DoCMD function:

On Error GoTo ErrorExit
DoCmd.SetWarnings False
DoCmd.OpenStoredProcedure "dbo.myStoredProcedure"

When the above VB code is run (it's part of an Access 2007 adp project connected to the SQL Server database) it takes the error exit and returns the "... did not return records." message. How can I avoid this??
Thanks,

Stored Procs, Error Handling And Return Values

Can anyone let me know the prefered method for handling stored procedure errors. I usually trap the error in the stored proc and then return a value using an output parameter
e.g stored proc
if @@error <> 0 beginset @returnValue = -1returnend
c#com.Parameters.Add("@returnValue", SqlDbType.Int).Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;con.Open();com.ExecuteNonQuery();
int result = (int)com.Parameters[0].Value;

Table Valued Functions - Yield Return Error

Aug 4, 2006

So I was creating a new table-valued function today which queries some data from a preexisting table.  Since this is my first table-valued function, I decided to check out some of the examples and see what I can figure out.

One particular example helped me out a bit until I ran into some data access issues...
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165054.aspx

So I create my function:

[SqlFunction(DataAccess = DataAccessKind.Read,SystemDataAccess=SystemDataAccessKind.Read,FillRowMethodName = "FillMyRow",TableDefinition ="p1 int, p2 int"]
public static IEnumerable getMyTable()
{
    using (SqlConnection conn = ....)
    {
        using (SqlCommand command = conn.CreateCommand())
        {
            ///.... populate command text, open connection
            using (SqlDataReader rdr = command.ExecuteReader())
            {
                while (rdr.Read())
                {
                    customObject1 o = new customObject1();
                    ///... populate o's parameters from reader ...
                    yield return o;
                }
        }
    }
}

public static void FillMyRow(
object source,
out int p1,
out int p2)
{
    customObject1 f = (customObject1)source;
    p1 = f.p1;
    p2 = f.p2;
}

Notice, this example yield returns the value o upon each iteration of the reader.
Despite the fact that the DataAccess is set to Read I still get the error...

An error occurred while getting new row from user defined Table Valued Function :

System.InvalidOperationException: Data access is not allowed in this context. Either the context is a function or method not marked with DataAccessKind.Read or SystemDataAccessKind.Read, is a callback to obtain data from FillRow method of a Table Valued Function, or is a UDT validation method.

I did however get past this error, by creating a collection of customObject1, populated it within the while(rdr.Read()) loop, then return the collection after closing the connection, command and reader.

I assume this error has something to do with the fact that you can't yield return results from within an open reader.  Is this error right though in this case?  Whats causing it to throw a InvOp Exception? Or is this a bug?

Thanks for the attention.

Calling GetVirtualInput Within SetUsageType Method Causes Error 0xC0047041 On Return

Apr 18, 2006

I've been trying to create an async transform component and one of the things I'd like to do is add a new output and/or columns to existing outputs for each input column that is selected.
I thought that the SetUsageType method would be a good place to do this as it will allow me to delete output's and columns based on the user's selections but, despite the fact that my code doesn't actually throw or cause errors, when I return from the SetUsageType method I'm informed that error 0xC0047041 (DTS_E_OBJECTNOTINHASHTABLE) has occurred .
I pared the method down to an absolute minimum and found that a call to GetVirtualInput is enough to push it over the edge even if it does nothing! What is wrong here?
Thanks
Charlie

Sample:
public override IDTSInputColumn90 SetUsageType(int inputID, IDTSVirtualInput90 virtualInput,
int lineageID, DTSUsageType usageType)
{

if (usageType == DTSUsageType.UT_READONLY || usageType == DTSUsageType.UT_READWRITE)
{
ComponentMetaData.InputCollection[0].GetVirtualInput();
}

return base.SetUsageType(inputID, virtualInput, lineageID, usageType);;
}

'Return' Statement In A Function,Get,or Operator Must Return A Value....Question

Aug 28, 2007

I'm a Reporting Services New-Be.

I'm trying to create a report that's based on a SQL-2005 Stored Procedure.

I added the Report Designer, a Report dataset ( based on a shared datasource).

When I try to build the project in BIDS, I get an error. The error occurs three times, once for each parameter on the stored procedure.

I'll only reproduce one instance of the error for the sake of brevity.

[rsCompilerErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the query parameter 'UserID' contains an error : [BC30654] 'Return' statement in a Function, Get, or Operator must return a value.

I've searched on this error and it looks like it's a Visual Basic error :

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8x403818(VS.80).aspx

My guess is that BIDS is creating some VB code behind the scenes for the report.

I can't find any other information that seems to fit this error.

The other reports in the BIDS project built successfully before I added this report, so it must be something specific to the report.

BTW, the Stored Procedure this report is based on a global temp table. The other reports do not use temp tables.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks,

Using Output Clause And Return Timestamp And Return Value

Oct 28, 2006

I am trying to bring my stored proc's into the 21st century with try catch and the output clause. In the past I have returned info like the new timestamp, the new identity (if an insert sproc), username with output params and a return value as well. I have checked if error is a concurrency violation(I check if @@rowcount is 0 and if so my return value is a special number.)

I have used the old goto method for trapping errors committing or rolling back the transaction.

Now I want to use the try,catch with transactions. This is easy enough but how do I do what I had done before?

I get an error returning the new timestamp in the Output clause (tstamp is my timestamp field -- so I am using inserted.tstamp).

Plus how do I check for concerrency error. Is it the same as before and if so would the check of @@rowcount be in the catch section?

So how to return timestamp and a return value and how to check for concurrency all in the try/catch.

by the way I read that you could not return an identity in the output clause but I had no problem.

Thanks for help on this

Transact SQL :: Return Set Of Values From SELECT As One Of Return Values From Stored Procedure

Aug 19, 2015

I have a stored procedure that selects the unique Name of an item from one table.

SELECT DISTINCT ChainName from Chains

For each ChainName, there exists 0 or more StoreNames in the Stores. I want to return the result of this select as the second field in each row of the result set.

SELECT DISTINCT StoreName FROM Stores WHERE Stores.ChainName = ChainName

Each row of the result set returned by the stored procedure would contain:

ChainName, Array of StoreNames (or comma separated strings or whatever)

How can I code a stored procedure to do this?
