Ok so I have some dynamic sql to delete a file that is created via sql earlier on. It is to provision a copy of a database to an instance on link server. Everything works great and the files used to delete. Now, with no code changes it is throwing a syntax error. I do a print of what the dynamic sql is creating before executing and then I copy / paste what was generated into command prompt and guess what!! The file deletes.
Here is the result on screen:

Here is the code that creates the statement:

The value of @BackupFile is simply the path of the file with the file name, everything in the prepared statement with the exception of DEL and the switch at the end.
How can you delete a log file.
Say I have backed up a transaction log at some drive say G:.
Now I want to delete this log file and want to define it in a job.
What is the syntax -
delete G:Test_log.bak ????

I am trying to remove the transaction log file since I have created another one on a seperate drive by it wont let me do it . I get this error "cant delete the primary data or log file"
Now microsoft site clearly state steps for deleting the transaction log file , by first emptying it and then deleting it BUT IT DOESNT WORK.
I have even tried detaching the database and then removing the transaction log file and then attaching the database again BUT it attaches the transaction file back again GRRRRRR
then on top of this MS SQL studio does not allow to put PRIMARY or anyother value to the Filegroup for tansaction log files so how on earth can a transaction file be "primary" as the error is stating ??????

So went to EM & added another file (Additional file in some other drive ) to the Tempdb , now I want to delete this file ???

I can not delete this file from C/Windows/Temp directory, all other files form that foder I can delete. The error message I get is that something else is using this file. The thing is I cant find what is using it, even though I uninstaled SQL Server 2005 completely. I have tried lots of things, nothing helps. At the end I entered windows in SAFE MODE, went to Computer Management and disabled almost every service I can, that might be using it, and still cant get rid of this SQL.LOG which is 26GB now. The only thing I could do is to compress the file and now it is 6.5GB.

In SQL 2012 I'm trying to delete a log file (both physically and logically). There are two log files and one of them is unnecessary. When I click 'remove' in SSMS it will delete the log file, but then when I go back under database properties it's still showing up even though the file has been physically removed from the OS. I'm wondering what steps I can take to get rid of the file permanently?

Is this typical? Can I do something to slim it down? As I am just trying to decrease the overall size to make it easier to work with when creating my application in VB, I am not worried about restoring the db (I have secure copies).

I am assuming you can do this only using a script component and not directly through ssis..but i am not too familiar with scripting...so some code would be helpful

I'm new to SQL Server 2005 (up until now I've been an Oracle DBA exclusively) and have been tasked with backing up all (6) of our SQL Server 2005 databases on a regular basis. To accomplish this, I've created individual SQL Server jobs for each database I wish to backup. Each of these jobs executes a T-SQL script like this:
BACKUP DATABASE [MYDATA] TO DISK = N'\networksharemydata.bak' WITH RETAINDAYS = 4,
NOFORMAT,
NOINIT,
NAME = N'MyData-FullBackup',
SKIP,
NOREWIND,
NOUNLOAD,
STATS = 10

My goal in specifying 'RETAINDAYS = 4' was so that there would always be 4 days worth of "backupsets" (forgive my Oracle-ese) kept in mydata.bak. But when I look at the amount of backupsets kept in mydata.bak I noticed that all of them were being kept and none were being deleted.
I researched this problem a little bit and thought I had discovered a solution by specifying 'INIT' instead of 'NOINIT' and 'NOSKIP' instead of 'SKIP', but this deletes the entire contents of mydata.bak only-if all of the backupsets contained in it are past their expiration date. I was hoping it would just delete the expired backupsets and keep the non-expired ones, but this isn't the case.
Does anyone know the simplest way - with T-SQL commands - to accmplish the task of backing up a database to 1 individual .bak file and also only retain x amount of "backupsets" within it? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and the more detailed the better. Thanks.

I have a SQL 2000 database. The table's primary key is set up as a "regular" index and another field is set up as a clustered index. When attempting to delete the index on this other field, I am receiving the following error message:
'tblQuestionAnswer' table
- Unable to delete index 'tblQuestionAnswer1'.
ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]A column has been specified more than once in the order by list. Columns in the order by list must be unique.
I do not understand why I am receiving this message in relation to the deletion of an index. Any ideas?
I have the following issue with Maintenance plan backups that work for BAK DIF and TRN to a remote server share.
When I try and remove the old files with a clean up task I get an error and the files don't get deleted.

Trying to figure out how to get the Cleanup task to delete old files. The same happens for all file extensions and I have tried other locations with simpler file paths same error.

I'm using a unique index on a table with ignore_dup_key to get around using distinct in a stored procedure. In Query analyser, when I issue the stored procedure, you get a message and also the data in the Grid. In a stored procedure call, initiated from MS Access, the message means I have to put additional client side programming to work around it. I know that duplicate keys are ignored; that is why I've created the table with this feature (unique index in combination with ignore_dup_key). So what's with the message. If I delete the Error message 3604 will I still get an error message?

Right click on the table and hit "Generate SQL Script" (under all tasks). On the options tab in the middle of the page check off all four contraint boxes. This will generate all of the sql to add and drop the contraints (and table, so remove this one before running).

Is there any way to delete an unwanted row on a table with 300 or more constraints with less modifications to contraints? Or is there any other way that can remove the unwanted row without much risk? Dropping the constraints is possible but re-adding the constraints may not be possible because the create constraint statements are not known. And readding the constraints may take time because the database physical size is around 1GB... Please help

Have a problem here needs urgent help. We are on SQL Server 2005, just recently installed SP2. Not sure if the problem is related to that but just now I tried to delete a user from a report (Properties > Security > Delete) I got a JavaScript error exclaimation mark at the bottom of my browser, when I clicked on it, it showed javascript error: 'return' statement outside of function.
The delete user function worked well all along until today, our IT installed SQL 2005 SP2 last week, not sure if it is related. Any solution? (uninstalling SP2 is not an option). and all other javascript functions worked well except the remove user in the security setting..I have no idea what is wrong..
Please advise!! HELP!!!!!

I have an File System Task that copies a file from one directory ot another. When I hard code the target directory (c:dirfile.txt) it works fine. When I change it to a virtual directory (\serverdirfile.txt) I get a security error:

I am getting a rsInternalError when I try to delete a report in Report Manager and SQL Management Studio. I am able to deploy, move (as long as the report doesn't exist at the destination) and upload but not delete.

I have a package in which there are only one Data flow Task and it has only three components. 1) Source , which is a SQL db 2) destination and 3) OLE DB Destination flat file Error output file. I want the error file to be created ONLY if there is any error while dumping the data into destination DB. But , the issue is, the error flat file is being created inspite of No error while dumping the data from Source to Destination.

I also tried it writing a script and still the same error. If I hard code the values into the variables it works fine but I will be running this everday so that it will pull in the current date along with the filename. So the value of the variables will change everyday. Here is my expression:

I am able to run SSIS packages as SQL Server Agent jobs with a Control Flow items "File system task", if I move a file (test.txt) from a drive (c on the server (where SQL Agent jobs run) to a subdirectory on the same drive. But, if I try to move a file on a network drive, the package fail.
What I can do to solve this issue.

Here's a really annoying problem. Let's say you have a text file with 2 million rows.Delimiters all look good and rows are previewed well but the file has a missing row at say lin 1234567 - way deep in the file. When SSIS encounters the blank row, an error is raised and processing on the file STOPS! I verified this in by checking the SSIS log and have even developed an error routine to notify me via email when the error occurs (really cool if I do say so myself ). The main problem still remains - how to resume processing from the point of failure in the file? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

My database, detached by the wizard, has now disappeared. The mdf file is still there, but when I try to attach it manually I get the "create file encountered operating system error 5 while attempting to open the physical file..." error.
Any way I can recover it?
