Ex.Message In Debug Mode Is Much Shorter
Jan 8, 2007
Exception ex.Message I am getting in debug mode calling AcquireConnection is much shorter than the logged message in run time because all the errors come to output window in debug. Is there any way to get all these errors description from exception object in debug time to be able to parse it?
Thanks.

I'm having problems getting a package that I'm trying to develop to run consistently.
This package is using and IBM OLE DB Provider for DB2 connection manager to move data from a remote DB2 for Windows source to a Native OLE DBSQL Native Client connection manger for a SQL 2005 destination.
Sometimes the package works. Sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, a command window briefly flashes in Visual Studio before execution "completes". There are no error messages even though the job aborts and no data is moved. The only indication of failure is that the data flow task never changes to green and the output reports that the package was "Canceled". Here's the debug output I'm getting:
Information: 0x40016041 at Integrity_Report_ABD: The package is attempting to configure from the XML file "O:JrsfilesScriptsSSISConfigDB.dtsConfig".
Information: 0x40016040 at Integrity_Report_ABD: The package is attempting to configure from SQL Server using the configuration string ""SSISConfiguration";"[dbo].[SSISConfigurations]";"DMS.EDW.EtlData";".
Information: 0x40016040 at Integrity_Report_ABD: The package is attempting to configure from SQL Server using the configuration string ""SSISConfiguration";"[dbo].[SSISConfigurations]";"FG.DCS.ABD";".
SSIS package "Integrity_Report_ABD.dtsx" starting.

Information: 0x4004300A at Data Flow Task, DTS.Pipeline: Validation phase is beginning.
Information: 0x40043006 at Data Flow Task, DTS.Pipeline: Prepare for Execute phase is beginning.
Information: 0x40043007 at Data Flow Task, DTS.Pipeline: Pre-Execute phase is beginning.
SSIS package "Integrity_Report_ABD.dtsx" finished: Canceled.
This is the first time we've tried to connect to our WinDB2 servers with SSIS. I'm thinking that I may need to move away from this type of connection and revert back to something like ODBC.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Bryan

Hi,
I am passing some /SET commands on the command line when I execute packages I created in SSIS and have run from the SQL Server Job manager. When I put these same /SET commands on the command line arguments section of the project properties page I would expect they would be passed into the executed package when it is run thru BIDS. But the variables still have their defined values when the packages executes.
Is there a trick to getting command line arguments to work in the debugger for SSIS/BIDS??

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't find how to run multiple tasks in sequence while in Visual Studio debug mode. In DTS design mode I grew accustomed to right-clicking tasks one-at-a time, but in SSIS I find the additional step of having to exit Debugging mode after every task gets old after a while.
There must be a way to start execution at a certain task and have the package continue all the way to some other specified task. It would also be nice to have every task in a Group execute in sequence and stop (even if connections continue beyond the group). I could even settle for repeatedly clicking the Continue button in Debug mode, but it's always grayed out when the current task is finished!
Can this be achieved by setting breakpoints?

Does anyone know why this happens? When I run one of the packages in my project (by hitting the play button in the designer), all of the other packages in that project open before it starts running?
Thank you.

I just had this happen twice in a row. The data flow task is showing a number of records almost twice as high as the actual data that is going into the table. This happened to me in two different DFT's with different data.
I am using an OLEDB source which uses a query something like:
select * from functiona()
In the DataFlowTask I see it had around 400,000 Rows go through the path all the way to the deastionation..
However I know that isn't right. If I do:
select count(*) from functiona() I get 200000 rows. Now the weird thing is if I check the table that it inserted to, it has the right number of rows, 200,000. (Numbers are not exact).
Anyone else had this happen?

Hi,
Can any one please tell me how to get the complete error description for example when i dont Redirect Row for Error in OLEDB Source i get a detailed error message with column name as
[RCheck [385]] Error: There was an error with input column "CHECK_STATUS" (456) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (398). The column status returned was: "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".
But when I set Redirect Row for error and use the Script component to log them into a Table with ErrorDescription based on ErrorColumnID it only gives me this.
The data value cannot be converted for reasons other than sign mismatch or data overflow.
Thanks

SSIS package "logging.dtsx" finished: Success.
This is exactly when I need when a package is running but I want to be able to see it without using Visual Studio.
I would do it in Reporting Services but I need to find out to get the information. The SSIS logging feature in a package does not provide that kind of info.
Did someone try this already?
Thanks!

This would actually be funny if I weren't under serious time constraints right now. I have an SSIS project with several script tasks in the control flow. I put breakpoints in one of them to allow me to step through and see whats going on. However, when I start the project, the IDE brings up the script editor for a different script task. The breakpoints in this task are actually on the same line numbers as the task I need to debug but the code is all wrong. I checked the task for which the code is being displayed and there are no breakpoints there.
Thanks for the assist!

So what I did was this:
LEFT (AMOUNT, LEN(AMOUNT)-7) AS AMOUNT
But i get an error saying invalid lenght parameter passed to the left or substring

Hello,
Today I ran a query from my ASP page that returned with an error message stating my command had timed out. Fine. I searched the forums (thank god for the internet), and added cmd.CommandTimeout = 120. Great! That solved my problem.
My question is that from everything I read, the command timeout is set to 30 seconds by default. Yet my query runs in 5 seconds or so with the property set, but wouldn't run at all without it. Is it possible my command timeout was set somewhere else to less than 30 seconds? It's almost as if the server THOUGHT it would take longer than 30 seconds, and gave up, before actually running the query (which has all needed indexes to make the query fast). I just don't understand why I was getting this error for what turns out to be a 5 second query. When I shorted the query to 4 seconds or so (reducing the date range for the report), it ran fine in 4 seconds without the timeout error. So basically, going to 5 seconds or more caused this error. Where are the other places that the CommandTimeout property might be set? On the SQL Express database itself? I didn't see any ASP.NET config properties addressing it. Is there somewhere else I can look?
Thanks!
Michael

Hello Folks,
I'm looking for the group's collective wisdom on the following issue, I'm sure many have been confronted with it.
I'm designing a db for a website that will utilize SQL Server 7. I have few tables that I think will grow very large row wise and that will be written to an read from frequently. I sense that I might be able to get better perfomance out of the system if I split many of these large tables up (row wise) into many smaller tables.
For example, The website that I'm working on has a "MailingAddresses" db table that contains the mailing addresses for the sites users (subscribers and other misc users - 1 record per user, anticipating 70,000+ users). Each user can update their record, and there will be frequent queries to the tables to get addresses for both internal admin use and for display on public webpages.
The website has five distinct sections that are in some sense like five distinct websites. Each user belongs to only one of these sections and they won't migrate between sections. Therefore I'm considering breaking up the one large "MailingAddresses" tables into five smaller tables, one for each section, i.e., "MAddressesSectionA", ..., "MAddressesSectionE".
These tables will have the same fields and constraints. Also of course there would be the same number of reads and writes in total with the five smaller tables as compared to that for the one big table. Also the combined size of the info in the five smaller tables would be the same as that for the one large table.
Though it's going to more of a pain to manage five tables versus one, I have a hunch it might be easier for the dbms to handle reads and writes with five smaller tables than with one large table...
...Of course this is true when queries are mainly respective to users from just one or two of the sections (as might be the case) - the big table then has the overhead of the address records for users in the other sections. BUT is there any benefit with the five smaller tables route when they are all frequently accessed??? Sure each select query has fewer records to go through, but with all five tables in play the dbms has to deal on average with the same amount of info as in the one big table.
What do you folks think, to divide or not to divide the big table(s) up row wise into smaller tables?
I guess the issue is summed up in this question: In general, can a dbms better handle in memory, and more quickly write to and query access - one BIG table with a+b+...+n records, or N smaller tables with a, b,...,n records respectively?
Thanks for the collective wisdom, - Jerry

Hello,everyone!!
There is a query which when executed in the grid mode(ctrl+d) takes approx 0.02 seconds(about 21,000
rows) But when I execute in the text mode, it takes about 0.40 seconds!!
Why is this difference?
Also, when the records from this table are read from a VB application, they are equally slow (as in the text mode!)
Why is it so slow on the text mode & relatively faster in the grid mode?
Has anyone got any idea on ‘Firehose’ style cursor ?(which may speed up access of data in the VB application)
Rgds,
Adie

Hi,
Currently, our Report Builder is running on Local Intranet mode. I'm investigating what the security implications are in changing it to Internet mode. However, I've not been able to find any documentation on this.
Does anyone know of any documentation that addresses this issue or have experience that they can share with changing Report Builder security zone from Intranet mode to Internet mode?
Thanks very much.

Hi folks,
I have a SQL 2005 OTC. CTP version running on Windows 2003 server.
I would like to find out how the SQL server option changed to Windows Authentication mode from Mixed mode over the weekend. From the SQL log, I don't see when it changed. I would like to see Date/Time and client IP. If I can see User ID (windows) that would be great. Where I can find these info in SQL server?
Thank you in advance...

Hello,
I am having trouble specifying a message body that is valid. I mean for the client to send. If I leave it as null then everything is ok but if I create a memorystream and add a line of text it reports back it did not pass validation. I do not understand this and am not sure what to do. I need to send a message based on a code and text but do not know the format of the body that is allowed. The code I am refering to comes out of HelloWord_CLR because that is what I am formating my sample after. I call it the same way it calls the return message done in ServiceProc. I need to know the message format including body since this does not seem to work. A sample of the call is bellow.
// Create an empty request message
string Msg = "Hello";
MemoryStream body = new MemoryStream(Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(Msg));
Message request = new Message("Request", body);
Thanks,
