Ok, hopefully a simple issue with a simple fix. I'm importing data from an Excel spreadsheet with values such as: 10, 20, 20 Tall, 40, 40 Tall. The column imports but is treated as numeric with values 10, 20, 20, 40, 40. I set the cells to be treated as text in Excel. Any suggestions?

Excel Destination Data Flow Component Shows No Sheet Name Or Output Column Names For Mappings

Mar 8, 2008

I have a data flow that consists of

OLE DB source which calls a stored proc that returns a result set

data conversion

Excel destination
I am in design mode in Business Intelligence studio. My excel destination (with an Excel Connection) shows no sheet name though I have an execute SQL task before the data flow to create the excel table called SHEET1. Needless to say, there are no output columns visible to do any mappings. I did go to the ExcelConnection to set the OpenRowset Property to SHEET1 but it seems to have no effect.

I can do the export in SQL Server Management studio and that works fine, but it is basic and does not meet my requirements. I have to customize the package to allow dynamic Excel filenames based on account names and have to split my result set into multiple excel sheets because excel 2003 has a max of 65536 rows per sheet. Also when I use the export wizard, I have the source as a table and eventually the source has to be a stored proc with input parms.

What am I missing or doing wrong? Thanks in advance

Problem With Retreving A Excel Data Through Excel Source Component.

Sep 18, 2007

Hello,

I have a problem with retreving a excel data through excel source component.

I have source component as Excel Source which will connect to my .xls sheet.
To retrieve the values from the sheet i am using a query as,
"SELECT F14,F3 FROM [Charac Defn & Assgnment$]"

The column F14 is not formatted so that the format of the cell is "General" I have a different type of values in the F14 column such as "PE","PES",15,20,20.00,8888.9999 etc..
While i click on preview button of Excel source it shows only the text values and not the int or decimal values, its returning NULL for those cells. I tried to use convert function, its throwing an error as

TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio

Is there any other function to change the format of the cell or i need to some thing else

Fromatting Excel Column

Oct 31, 2006

Hi,

I have an excel export with numeric values. When the SSIS package writes into the excel it treats all data types as strings and attaches an apostrophe in the beginning. I tried formatting the excel sheet with the number data type and saving it . It doesnt work.

Other strange thing is that when I go into the advanced editor for the excel destination and look into the properties of the external columns all of them have the data type as Unicode String[DT_WSTR] irrespective of what the data type is from the input. The UI allows me to change it to numeric for numeric columns without any error but the value is not saved at all which is very frustrating. I also tried changing it in the xml file of the package, it some how seems to overwrite it after validation. It would be really nice if it threw an error saying that it cannot be changed.

Anyways there seems to be no way of changing the destination data type if it s an existing file and if I create a new excel sheet there is no way of formatting data. Is there any way out?

Thanks

Data Flow Task Error To Extract Data From Sql Server To Excel

Mar 28, 2008

Hi All,

I want to export data from SQL Server2005 to an Excel spreadsheet thru "Data Flow Task". I am using OLE DB for SQL Server for the source connection and a Connection To Excel as my destination source. The Excel spreadsheet (2003) exists and has the first row with column names. I don't have any warnings before trying to execute.

The SQL datable fileds are
i) ID - Int

ii) RefID
iii) txtRemarks - nvarchar(MAX)
iv) ddlWaterLevel - nvarchar(50)

While executing the tasks, I got the error
Error: 0xC0202025 at Data Flow Task, Excel Destination [427]: Cannot create an OLE DB accessor. Verify that the column metadata is valid.
Error: 0xC004701A at Data Flow Task, DTS.Pipeline: component "Excel Destination" (427) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC0202025.

After analysing I found in the DataFlow --> Excel destination --> Advanced Editor for Excel Destination, the default data type for txtRemarks shows as "Unicode string [DT_WSTR]". But this is supposed to be "Unicode text stream [DT_NTEXT]". Even if I change the data type in the design time, It doesn't accept.

Please do help me out.

thanks

Import Data From Excel-Sheet Via OleDb In VB.Net - How To Get A Columns Data As String?

Oct 25, 2007

Hello,

i want to import data from an excel sheet into a database. While reading from the excel sheet OleDb automatically guesses the Datatype of each column. My Problem is the first A Column which contains ~240 Lines. 210 Lines are Numbers, the latter 30 do contain strings. When i use this code:

Code BlockDim sConn As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & conf_path_current & file_to_import & ";Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=NO"""
Dim oConn As New OleDb.OleDbConnection(sConn)
Dim cmd1 As New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand("Select * From [Table$]", oConn)
Dim rdr As OleDb.OleDbDataReader = cmd1.ExecuteReader
Do While rdr.Read()
Console.WriteLine(rdr.Item(0)) 'or rdr(0).ToString
Next

it will continue to read the stuff till the String-Lines are coming.
when using Item(0), it just crashes for trying to convert a DBNull to a String, when using rdr(0).ToString() it just gives me no value.

So my question is how to tell OleDB that i want that column to be completly read as String/Varchar?

Thanks for Reading

Find/Next + Excel Merge Column Issues

May 9, 2008

Two issues,
1. Even if there is no text entered in the search box of the report viewer header, the next button is clickable and returns the message "the entire report is searched'. Is this a defect in the product?

2. When report is exported to excel, the excel object tries to keep the report formatting to the closest and hence merging the columns in the excel. What is the work around to fix this issue. The end users after exporting to excel would normally do a sort by ascending/descending on required columns and this behaviour is causing an issue.

Excel: Read Column As Text (IMXE=1 Does Not Seem To Help)

Sep 8, 2006

Hi!

We currently have a problem while reading Excel files. The file has one column we want to read as DT_(W)STR which Jet delivers to us only as DT_R8 as there are plenty of numerical entries in that column before one alphanumerical appears.

We first tried with IMEX=1 but as described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/194124/en-us will only parse the first eigth characters as "TypeGuessRows" is set to 8 and can't be edited.

Is there any way to read a column in Excel in a way typed by the SSIS designer (DT_(w)STR in our case)?

With best regards,

Hauke Schlichting

PS: Designing a "decoy" Excel file with column headers and first columns set is not really considered an option ;-)
