And no, not through EM or SSMS
I want to interogate the catalog, so I can hae a job execute and do the grants in case a developer forgets
I mean I guess I can do the all everytime, but I don't know what the impact would be. It appears to be none, because of already done that, but in DB2 that would be bad as it would keep adding rows to the system tables
I have this so far
select *
from syspermissions p
inner join sysusers u
on u.uid = p.grantee
inner join sysobjects o
on o.id = p.id
where u.name = 'mepuser'
and o.name not like 'dt_%'
order by p.id
The M$ catalog is a royal pain

I'm using MS SQL Server 2005.
I want to simulate a table, using a Multi-statement Table-Value User-Defined Function, but I need the function build the SQL statement from scratch each time so I can dynamically define values like the table it references. The only way I know how to run the query after it has been defined in this manner is to run an EXEC command. However I'm getting an error basically saying that the EXEC command is off limits in a User Defined Function.
The Exsact Error is:
>[Error] Script lines: 1-108 ------------------------
Invalid use of side-effecting or time-dependent operator in 'EXECUTE STRING' within a function.
Is there some way to get around this limitation of User Defined Functions. Or perhaps a way to simulate the functionality of Multi-statement Table-Value User-Defined Functions in a Store Procedure, specifically the ability to run where statements, or transform the data on the fly without re-writing the Stored Procedure every time.
The code I’m trying to run is below.
(Note: The code works as a stored procedure, so I'm sure that the core of the statment is correct)

Hello, I recently view a webcast of sql injection, and at this moment I created a user, and give dbo to this user, and this same user, is the one I have in the connection string of my web application, I want to create a user to prevent sql injection attacks, I mean that user wont be able to drop or create objects, only select views, tables, exec insert,update, deletes and exec stored procedures.
Is any easy way to do this?
A database role and then assing that role to the user?

I created a new user (Joe_Reader) and gave this user the db_datareader Role.I then went and specified what tables and queries would this user see. Thisworks fine. I however keep on creating tables and views on the database andautomatically these objects are viewable by the user. I have to manually goand deny the access for each object I create. Is there a way that I canonly let Jo_Reader see the tables that I originally assigned and that noneof the other queries or views are viewable by himThanks

Hi,
I am having an issue when performing an FTP atsk to a remote site ( as opposed to internaly on a LAN )
I get the error "[Connection manager "FTP Connection Manager"] Error: An error occurred in the requested FTP operation. Detailed error description: 200 Type set to IMAGE. 200 command successful 550 permission denied . "
I can manually FTP to this site from my machine, using either a CMD window or Windows explorer. I can create folders, deposit files, delete files etc so I seem to have full control. This task works when testing on our local FTP server on the LAN. The "Test" connection works when configuring the connection to the remote site. It is just at runtime that the task fails.
Can anybody come up with any ideas why this may be ?
Thanks.

Hi all,
In my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE), I executed the following sql code suuccessfully:
--insertNewRocord.sql--
USE shcDB
GO
CREATE PROC sp_insertNewRecord @procPersonID int,
@procFirstName nvarchar(20),
@procLastName nvarchar(20),
@procAddress nvarchar(50),
@procCity nvarchar(20),
@procState nvarchar(20),
@procZipCode nvarchar(20),
@procEmail nvarchar(50)
AS INSERT INTO MyFriends
VALUES (@procPersonID, @procFirstName, @procLastName, @procAddress,
@procCity, @procState, @procZipCode, @procEmail)
GO
EXEC sp_insertNewRecord 7, 'Peter', 'Wang', '678 Old St', 'Detroit',
'Michigon', '67899', 'PeterWang@yahoo.com'
GO
=======================================================================
Now, I want to insert a new record into the dbo.Friends table of my shcDB by executing the following T-SQL and Visual Basic 2005 codes that are programmed in a VB2005 Express project "CallshcDBspWithAdoNet":
--Form1.vb--
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data.SqlTypes
Public Class Form1
Public Sub InsertNewFriend()
Dim connectionString As String = "Integrated Security-SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;" + _
"Initial Catalog=shcDB;Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS"
Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
connection.Open()
Try
Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_InsertNewRecord", connection)
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
EXEC sp_insertNewRecord 6, 'Craig', 'Utley', '5577 Baltimore Ave',
'Ellicott City', 'MD', '21045', 'CraigUtley@yahoo.com'
Console.WriteLine("Row inserted: " + _
command.ExecuteNonQuery().ToString)
Catch ex As Exception
Console.WriteLine(ex.Message)
Throw
Finally
connection.Close()
End Try
End Sub
End Class
===========================================================
I ran the above project in VB 2005 Express and I got the following 5 errors:
1. Name 'EXEC' is not declared (in Line 16 of Form1.vb)
2. Method arguments must be enclosed in parentheses (in Line 16 of Form1.vb)
3. Name 'sd-insertNewRecord' is not declared. (in Line 16 of Form1.vb)
4.Comma, ')', or a valid expression continuation expected (in Line 16 of Form1.vb)
5. Expression expected (in Line 16 of Form1.vb)
============================================================
I know that "EXEC sp_insertNewRecord 6, 'Craig', 'Utley', '5577 Baltimore Ave',
'Ellicott City', 'MD', '21045', 'CraigUtley@yahoo.com' "in Line 16 of Form1.vb is grossly in error.
But I am new in doing the programming of T-SQL in VB 2005 Express and I am not able to change it.
Please help and advise me how to correct these problems.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

I have an ASP.NET application that runs under the development server. Before deploying to my host I wanted to test it under IIS. I set up a virtual directory under IIS, but when I try to open the home page I get an error Unable to open the physical file
"E:CDiskLocalWebSitesDIWSchedulingApp_DataDIWDB.MDF". Operating
system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".and a code dump showing that the code is breaking at the open connection. A little research on the error indicates that IIS does not have permission to execute the database operation. I can not find any information on how to give IIS this permission in SQL Server 2005 Express. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I am trying to create a awkward sp, just need to know if i can do this somehow, here i piece of the code...
create procedure IM_SP_TrPreProc /*@TableName Varchar(255),*/ @SystemFileName Varchar(255)
---------------------------------------------
--Param1 = Tablename
--Param2 = Systemfilename
---------------------------------------------
as
declare @TableName Varchar(255);--Just For Testing---DELETE!!
declare @Filename varchar(255); --Store Distinct filename
declare @DSNo Varchar(255);-- Use 'set' to execute Var TableName
declare @SumUnits Varchar(255); --Use 'set' to calculate sum of units
declare @SumValue Varchar(255);
Set @TableName = 'TrDs01' -- Testing Only--DELETE!!
------------------------Set Statements using @TableName Var------------------------------------------
Set @DSNo = 'select distinct DataSupplierNo from ' + @TableName
Set @SumUnits = 'select sum(Units) from ' + @TableName
Set @SumValue = 'Select sum(Value) from ' + @TableName
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Insert into TransactionMaster([FileName],DataSupplierNo,ImportFileRecordID,FileLoadDate,
UnitsSum,ValueSum,RecordCount)
Select(@Filename),(exec(DSNo)), ................
Just the Bold and underlined bit "exec(DSNo)"..... is this doable in some way? can i use exec to retrieve the value to insert to data supplier. As far as i know i have to do it like this because im using a variable as the table name...

I need help understanding the syntax of the "exec sql" statement.
i am looking at code that build an sql string such as
sql="exec SOMETHING Session("id")"
or something like that.
then, there is
conn.execute(sql)
My question is the "SOMETHING" in the sql statement...is what? I know it is user defined (object or variable or such), but what exactly is it? i look through the rest of the code and don;'t see SOMETHING defined elsewhere.
i am not sure if i am asking the question right. i don't understand what the SOMETHING is doing, or why it is there.
in particular, the code i am examining is
sql="exec SurveyDelete "&"'" & Session("StudentID") & " ' "
conn.execute(sql)
i understand the this statement will delete a record, but how does it handle "SurveyDelete", how does it know what the is when it is not defined anywhere else in the code?

Hi,
I have a written a SP to do indexdefrag to all user table indexes in a databases...I had to use dynamic sql so I can reuse this code for any DB...
declare @strsql varchar(500)
set @strsql = ' dbcc indexdefrag('+'''DBName'''+',554556545,3)'
exec (@strsql)
When I execute the above script, I immeaditely see the results in the query analyser like below:
Pages Scanned Pages Moved Pages Removed
------------- ----------- -------------
3 0 0
Looks like the indexdefrag did not happen since the logical fragmentation is still a high number like 30%.....
Just wondering whats goin on..
Thanks.

is it possible to have a sproc with a input parm of a column name and have this column name be inserted into an exec statement that runs and provides the output as a OUTPUT parm instead of a result set?
i can get the sproc to take the column name as a parm, run the exec, but cannot figure out how to assign the "dynamic sql" output to a OUTPUT variable instead of returning the result set.
