SQL Server 2012 :: Run DBCC Inside Stored Proc Using EXECUTE AS

Mar 18, 2014

I am a SysAdmin on a test/dev SQL instance. Other non-sysadmin users (developers) need the ability to execute DBCC commands like the following:

DBCC FREESYSTEMCACHE ('ALL') WITH MARK_IN_USE_FOR_REMOVAL
OR
DBCC FREEPROCCACHE

I tried creating a store proc in a user database and granting those non-sysadmin users EXECUTE permission on it as so:

CREATE PROC spFreeSystemCache
WITH EXECUTE AS 'sa'
AS
DBCC FREESYSTEMCACHE ('ALL') WITH MARK_IN_USE_FOR_REMOVAL
GO

When I try to create this proc, I get the following error:

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure spFreeSystemCache, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near 'sa'.

Ok, so I can't EXECUTE AS sa...

Execute SP On Linked Server?

Jul 24, 2006

I've created a stored procedure on several servers. All with the same name and all in a database with same names.
Now I’m trying to execute the stored procedures by executing a script.... I don’t get it to work!
I can execute it successfully by starting it manually:
exec [CIMPDB01CIMT1].zz_am.dbo.usp_SpaceMon
exec [CIMPDB01CIMT2].zz_am.dbo.usp_SpaceMon
and so on..... no problem

But when I try to execute it by using a script (and substitute the instance names with values taken from a table) it won’t:

declare @x int
declare @dbname varchar(500)
declare @SQL nvarchar(600)
set @x = 1

create table #databases
(ID int IDENTITY,name varchar(500))

insert #databases select instancelongname from instances where actief='J'

while @x <= (select max(id) from #databases)
begin
select @dbname = name from #databases where id = @x
print @dbname
select @SQL='exec ' + @dbname + '.zz_am.dbo.usp_SpaceMon'
print @SQL
execute @SQL

set @x = @x + 1
end

drop table #databases

Msg 203, Level 16, State 2, Line 17
The name 'exec [CIMPDB01CIM].zz_am.dbo.usp_SpaceMon' is not a valid identifier.

Please help....

Linked Server And EXECUTE AS

Oct 10, 2007

I setup a linked server with the following server login mapping:

Local login: db1reader
Remote login: db2reader

db2reader is granted to have read permissions in db2.
I created a stored proc p1 using WITH EXECUTE AS 'db1reader'

Inside the stored proc, I access the link server db2 by "select * from db2server.db2.dbo.table"
db1 reader is granted to have EXECUTE permission on stored proc p1. Trustworthy is on in db1.

Then, I use SQL server 2005 management studio to connect to db1 using db1reader account. Try to execute the stored proc p1. It tells me "Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists."

Then, I launched a new query in management studio, type in the following TSQL

execute as login = 'db1reader'
go
select * from db2server.db2.dbo.table
revert
go

This time, it works without any error.

Then, in the same query window. I delete all my old TSQL statements and execute my p1 stored proc again.

USE [db1]
GO
DECLARE @return_value int
EXEC @return_value = [dbo].[p1]
SELECT 'Return Value' = @return_value
GO

This time, it works.

What did I do wrong?

OPENQUERY Vs EXECUTE On A Linked Server -- What Is Better?

May 22, 2007

Can anyone tell me, if, generally, the performance or the cost of executing a pass-through command on a linked server in SQL Server 2005 would be better using OPENQUERY or the new option with EXECUTE -- whether the two servers are on the same box or not? I haven't been able to find a comparison between the two.

Have there been any tests of the difference?

What effect on performance is there with 'rpc out' set with sp_serveroption so EXECUTE can be used?

To be more specific I have a development box with SQL Server 2005 and Oracle 9.2.

The new option with EXECUTE would be something like the example in MSDN (Example J.) at:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188332.aspx

EXEC ( 'SELECT * FROM scott.emp') AT ORACLE;
GO

Remote Update Having A Linked Server Takes Forever To Execute

Oct 17, 2006

UPDATE CD SET col1=SR.col1,col2=SR.col2,col3=SR.col3,col4=SR.col4,col5=SR.col5,col6=SR.col6,col7=SR.col7,

col8=SR.col8,col9=SR.col9,col10=SR.col10

FROM LNKSQL1.db1.DBO.Table1 CD

join Table2 USRI on USRI.col00 = CD.col00

join table3 SR on USRI.col00 = SR.col00

Here, I'm trying to tun this from an instance and do a remote update. col00 is a primary key and there is a clustered index that exists on this column. When I run this query, it does a 'select * from tabl1' on the remote server and that table has about 60 million rows. I don't understand why it would do a select *... Also, we migrated to SQL 2005 a week or so back but before that everything was running smooth. I dont have the execution plan from before but this statement was fast. Right now, I can't run this statement at all. It takes about 37 secs to do one update. But if I did the update on a local server doing remote joins here, it would work fine. When I tried to show the execution plan, it took about 10 mins to show up an estimated plan and 99% of the time was spent on Remote scan. Please let me know what I can do to improve my situation. Thank you

Execute Script To Linked Oracle Server From Sql Server

Feb 26, 2008

Ok, so these are the facts:
My company wants to implement a BI, the warehousing company we used sold us panorama on sql server. Our database is on oracle.
They were proposing this method:
a) Link oracle server, copy oracle tables to sql database and then build cubes from sql database. The operation will be made only once a day at night.
I don't like it so make it like this:
b) Build cubes directly from linked oracle server. As it is not good to build directly from tables and views (because they could change between processing dimensions), I used materialized views (or snapshots) and some views on slow modifying tables.
Problem:
Oracle snapshots must be refreshed and that is done in oracle with a procedure.
My question is:
How can I run an oracle procedure directly from sql server? I want to create a job that will refresh the oracle snapshots and process analysis database after that.
I know I can use OPENQUERY to return queries from oracle but I want to execute a script.
Solutions?

Another way was by doing it in a command line.
I asume there is an special job feature that can run programs.

PS. posted in another section too

Is it possible to execute DBCC statements remotely in destination servers through stored procedures existing in source server.

I don’t want to use isql, osql, openquery, openresultset because I have to pass user id or password.

I have linked the required SQL servers using Linked servers.

If so please give some example.

Thanks in Advance,

DTS Execute SQL Task On Access Linked Table

Mar 11, 2004

Can the DTS execute SQL task recognize a table in an Access database that is linked from another Access database?

I'm attempting to use a DTS Execute SQL task connected to Access1.mdb to make a new table in Access1.mdb that is using a Subquery from a linked table in Access2.mdb . (I know it sounds convoluded..) Its giving me an error in my FROM clause as if it can't recognize the linked table from Access2.mdb.

The reason why I'm doing this is that I'm not sure how to run an Access make table query from DTS that will overwrite the existing table in Access. I get an error that the table already exists.

Any Help?

DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

Now, the bad news. I am a bit of a novice and have picked this up from someone who left my company. It appears the latch error has been around for some time and only reared up when I instituted a new back up system that runs a dbcc check befor backing up. I don't think I have any clean backups.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DBCC &<DLL Name&>(free) - MS SQL Server

Jul 13, 2007

Hi there

I'm having a problem free'ing a extended stored procedure DLL from memory, so I can delete the file/replace it and reload a new one into the DB.

DBCC <DLL Name>(free)

This statement must be run before a DLL will be replaced and the operating system will let the file be overwritten.

I'm running the command in Query Analyzer and it seems to be "working" fine, but when I try delete the dll, it tells me another program is using it.

The only way I seem to be able to free the dll is to restart the DB.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Dbcc Sqlperf In SQL Server 2005

Jul 10, 2006

In SQL Server 2005, the dbcc sqlperf requires View Server State permission. If this permission cannot be granted, how can I find out the nlogpcntused (Percentage of the log file currently occupied with transaction log information)?

By the way, is there any place that I can find out this kind of difference (required permission) between SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005?

Thanks for any help,

How Run DBCC CHECKDB On All Databases On A Server?

I can run that command easily for a single DB and then manually copy/paste that command (and change the database name each time) but does sql have a way to loop through all databses on a server?

Dbcc Shrinkfile - SQL Server 2000 - Invalidate Log?

Mar 10, 2006

Hi,I need to shrink a database file and was wondering whether it isrequired to run a full backup after the shrink operation. In SQL Server 7.0 shrinkfile was a non-logged operation so wouldinvalidate your transaction logs. Is the same true for 2000?Obviously as a matter of course I would backup before and after theoperation but going forward I may want to implement this on a regularbasis.CheersDee

Dbcc SomeDLL(free) Causes Server To Hang Out

Apr 1, 2008

Hi there.

When I try to free previously registered DLL, server is starting to execute query and it takes a number of minutes and nothing happens.

Here is an example:

sp_addextendedproc 'xp_test','test.dll' //works fine

exec master..xp_test '999' //works fine

sp_dropextendedproc 'xp_test' //works fine

dbcc test(free) //do not work

I've tested it on:

SQL MSDE SP3 //i was getting an acces violation first: spid 51 Exception 0xc0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION at 0x00000000
SQL MSDE SP4 //but on this SP I have the same behaviour as on server 2005 / infinite query execution time
SQL Server 2005 standard //infinite query execution time
SQL Server 2005 standard with SP2 //infinite query execution time

I can't understand this because this started after chaning my machine.

It worked without any problems on the previous one and I've used this metod very often on the same dll which hasn't changed.

Is there any way to solve this?

Thanks for your time.

Server Locking Up Everytime A DBCC DBREINDEX Is Issued

Apr 6, 2001

Every time I execute DBCC DBREINDEX (Table_Name, '',0)WITH NO_INFOMSGS the server hangs. No error messages in windows 2000 logs or in the SQL 7.0 logs.

The table is about 2 gig in size and the index is a clustered index on two fields.

The server has 1 gig of memory and the cache hit ratio, and cache flushes both look good. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DBCC SHRINKFILE Taking 3 Times More In SQL Server 2000 Than In 7

Mar 23, 2003

Hi Folks:

We´ve migrated from SQL Server 7.0 EE to SQL Server 2000 in a 8processors, 8 GB RAM server, using W2000.

All seems go ok, but after reorganizing indexes, when we want to recover free space in the differents files using DBCC SHRINKFILE, that recovers are taking the triple of time than with previous SQL Server 7.0.

Shrinking big files (6GB to recover 1.5 GB), previously taking 3 hours now are needing 9 hours.

Any suggestion or help will be appreciated.

Best Regards.

SQL Server 2012 :: How To Determine Metadata On DBCC Results

May 26, 2015

I can find many examples of loading DBCC results into tables. They all begin with a create table statement defining the results. My question is , other than trial and error, is there a way to determine what data types will be returned. Sure you can say that first element looks like an integer, but is it really a bigint, and that text string can be varchar(max) but will char(2) work.

I'm not looking for an answer for a specific DBCC function, but rather a generic way I can determine the characteristics of any DBCC result set.

I tried

SELECT *
INTO #tmp
FROM OPENROWSET('SQLOLEDB',
'Server=ray;Trusted_Connection=Yes;Database=Ed_sandbox',
'Set FmtOnly OFF; DBCC loginfo WITH tableresults ')

but I got back

Msg 11527, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_describe_first_result_set, Line 1

The metadata could not be determined because statement 'DBCC loginfo WITH tableresults' does not support metadata discovery.

Is It Possible To Change Permissions Of SQL Server System Stored Procedures And DBCC Commands?

May 8, 2008

Hi all,

I would like to enable users that do not belong to groups (server roles) such as sysadmin, serveradmin and don't have db permissions such as ddl_admin or db_owner to run some of the system stored procedures (such as sp_addumpdevice sp_configure sp_serveroption ...) and DBCC commands (such as DBCC CHECKFILEGROUP - requires ob_owner or sysadmin permission).

Is it possible to change permissions of SQL Server system stored procedures?

Is it possible to change permissions of SQL Server DBCC commands?

Thanks,

Help! The Transaction Log Is Full Error In SSIS Execute SQL Task When I Execute A DELETE SQL Query

Dec 6, 2006

Dear all:

I had got the below error when I execute a DELETE SQL query in SSIS Execute SQL Task :

Error: 0xC002F210 at DelAFKO, Execute SQL Task: Executing the query "DELETE FROM [CQMS_SAP].[dbo].[AFKO]" failed with the following error: "The transaction log for database 'CQMS_SAP' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

But my disk has large as more than 6 GB space, and I query the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases which return value as "NOTHING".

So this confused me, any one has any experience on this?

Many thanks,

Tomorrow
