Exporting Text Files
May 21, 2002
I would like to export SQLServer data from a table to a text file within a stored procedure that is fired from an after insert trigger. In Oracle the is a UTL_FILE Package that does this. Is there any way to do this in a SQLServer stored procedure.

I am transferring data from Oracle tables into text files, and facing these errors.
1. I have a varaible working as an expression and my query goes into that variable and onwards that variable is passed to dataflow task, which parse the query. my query is simple saying "Select * from PLS.ABC" where PLS is my schema, but the task generates error "Opening a rowset for "Select * from PLS.ABC" failed. check that the table exists in the database. and surely the table is there.
2. I have a foreach loop that iterates through all the table names and the table names are passed onwards to the varaible query, the dataflow task inside the foreach loop gets the variable query and will generate text files based on tablenames which i have supplied in another variable to the connectionstring property of the flatfile destination. Is it possible or not. all the tables have different columns and i need the output in text files.

Hi
I'm using SSIS to export views & tables in SQL 2005 to csv files. My problem is that when I select that I want to use " as a text qualifier, it also uses them to surround non-text fields such as time/date and integer fields.
In SQL 2000 I used DTS packages and they handled the data without any issues.
Can anyone help?

i have a VB project utilising SQL server Express. I need to export the database files so that the user data can be copied to a laptop and made available to other users.
My problem is this, connections are remaining open to the DB files even though I close all forms that include data access. Typically, my application takes around 6 minutes before the connections are released and the files can be copied.
Is there a way of either forcing all connections to close or of exporting the DB while it has connections?

I have scheduled an export of some DBs to mdb- files.
the problem is: everytime the DTS- packet is executing, the records are appended. eg the packet runs 4 times there are 4 records with the id 1, 4 records with id2 and so on.
But I only want a fresh copy of the database, not an incremental update.
please help

Hi everybody, i'm new to SSIS, so it's possible that mine is a very stupid question
I have to develop a simple ETL package that reads data from a csv file and writes them to an xls file; the problem is that when the number of rows exceeds the maximum number of rows allowed for an xls file i get an error.
There is a way to solve this problem? for example adding a new sheet or creating a new file?
Thanks in advance

I have text data files from a third party and they use comma as field delimiters and enclose the text for each column in double-quotes. Not a problem for most of the data files until they start sending files where there is " within the column values. SSIS package fails with the error:
The column delimiter for column "Column 1" was not found.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.Thankspcp

Hi.
I've tried to create a SSIS package to simply export a bunch of tables as flat files, and am having troubles because when the for each loop hits the second table the column mappings in the flat file destination are not synchronised with its schema.
I created a for each loop with an enumerator that returns the table names and sets a user variable.
I created a data flow task which dynamically connects to the table name variable.
In the Flat File Destination there is a column mapping property, but I don't know how to reset these mappings on each iteration.
Any ideas?

We just upgraded from SQL 2000 to 2005. Under 2000, I could export multiple stored procs to separate windows files.
Is there a way to do this under 2005 without exporting 1 proc at a time?

I am trying to find a convenient way to export parts of tables to text
files.
One way I see is BCP: Is there a way to avoid writing the command and
options into the command prompt by hand? I.e. a way to write the
commands into a text file and then to execute them?
Are there other ways? I`d like to find a way that a user who uses a web
interface can use.
Is there a way to send the text files via mail to a remote user?

I have a record set I have to export on a weekly basis into a CSV file for a customer/client. One of the fields being included in the export is a TEXT field. When I export this field, the CSV file is truncating the record significantly.
Is there a way I can get the export to pass all the data in the TEXT field, or is this a limitation on the data transformation, or is it a limitation on the CSV file (because of the size/nature of the TEXT field).

I have a button on my winform that is exporting a sql table to a text file. It works fine but I have a few fields that are date (not date/time) but when it exports it is adding a time. Is there a way to just export the date that is in the table?
This is what it looks like after it is exported.

Hi all,
I'm having an issue with data from an OLE DB source being converted from numeric [DT_R8] to text when I export it to Excel. I had the column in the spreadsheet formatted as Numeric, but when I set it up as the data destination, it is showing in SSIS as [DT_WSTR].
The SSIS job runs OK, it just converts my numeric data to text in the spreadsheet. I'm surprised that the job actually runs, since I have to do explicit data conversions for my OLE DB string data in order to convert it to unicode. From what I have read elsewhere, the decision was made in SSIS not to use implicit data conversion, but to require explicit conversion. Yet this export is converting my numeric data to text.
I would appreciate any information on how to set up the Excel Destination to properly handle numeric information.

Hi. Im new to SQL and I need to export a SQL table as a comma delimited text file which is straight forward. However two of the fields are integers and I need these to be right justified with zero's.
In Access I would use something like format(columnname, "00000000") to get it to work, but SQL Server doesn't like this.
How can I do this?

Hi gurus,
I've created a linked server (and set up the corresponding schema.ini file) in order to perform bulk-inserts from some CSV text files into SQL tables (from my standpoint the text files are just for reading purposes). The linked server works fine (I can select the data in the files without a problem).
Now the question: is possible to automatically detect when one or more of those files change in order to start the import process automatically? Something like having a trigger created on the CSV files Or there's no easy way to do that so I have, to say something, to create a Job that periodically checks if the files have changed programatically (say, recording each file's timestamp everytime is imported and comparing the recorded value with the current one, or whatever)?
Thanks a lot in advance!

I was asked at work to create an audit log to track user changes to our SQL Server 2005 database. My plans were to use a trigger to store the changes in a database table. I was just told that rather then storing these changes the database, that I should write these changes to a text file. I am having problems finding a good example of how to write to a text file in T-SQL. Does anyone have an example of how to do this? Thanks

Hello DBA's:
I want to upload 100 text files to a single table on SQL Server 2000.
Records from these text files would be selected on the basis of a where clause.
What would be the best way of accomplishing this? Using DTS, I can do only one file at a time. Is there a faster approach.
Thanks

I want to read the Contents as is from the Text files stored in the SAN Box?.
Can some one help me with this.

I have to import 18000 text files into a sql database.
Each file contains 10 fields and around 5000 records.
I am currently doing this with DTS.
What I am wondering is this: Is DTS the most efficient i.e. quickest way to import all this data. Bearing in mind there is about 90 million records to import in all.
I would appreciate the benefit of somebody elses experience when dealing with this type of thing.
Cheers,
Brookesy
